Rasmussen polling data make Obama the favorite

I don’t know who will win the presidency come Nov. 6. I do know, however, that at this point, based on polling, Barack Obama remains the clear favorite to win an electoral-college majority.

I understand that’s a controversial statement among some. Sites such as Nate Silver’s fivethirtyeight.com have become targets of sustained attacks and critiques by supporters of Mitt Romney for making similar statements. But it’s nonetheless true.

To document that claim, let’s take a look at the race using a data source that ought to sidestep all conservative claims of “skewed polling” and “media bias,” etc. Let’s examine it using numbers generated solely by Rasmussen, using definitions of “leaning” and “tossup” states as applied by Rasmussen. And before we do, let’s take a moment to establish just how Republican-leaning the Rasmussen numbers really are by looking at state polling data.

Colorado: Rasmussen has Romney up by four points, which is a fairly large margin. Yet of the 10 polls released in that state in the last two weeks, eight have Obama up. The only only other poll showing a Romney lead in Colorado — an American Research Group poll released Oct. 28 — has Romney up by just one.

Ohio: Of the 21 polls released in the past two weeks, only one — Rasmussen — has Romney in the lead, in Rasmussen’s case a lead of two points. Most other polls give Obama a two-to-five-point lead.

Wisconsin: Rasmussen’s latest poll, released Oct. 25, puts Paul Ryan’s home state in a tie. Every other poll conducted in the state since Aug. 21 — more than two dozen in all — has put Obama ahead, the most recent ones by a margin of two to six points.

Now, it may turn out that Rasmussen is right and almost everyone else is wrong. That can’t be discounted. But for our purposes, there’s no doubt that by using Rasmussen in our analysis, we are using numbers most favorable to the Republican cause.

And what does Rasmussen tell us?

Well, if you look at its electoral college map, using Rasmussen-generated polling data, we find the following breakdown:

Obama and Obama-leaning states: 237 electoral votes
Romney and Romney-leaning states: 206 electoral votes
Tossups: 95 electoral votes

In other words, to get to the magical 270 electoral votes, Romney needs to win 64 of the 95 tossup votes available. That’s 67.4 percent, or two out of three available votes.

To get to the magical 270 votes, Obama needs to win just 33 of the 95 tossup votes, basically a little more than one out of every three tossup votes.

That’s why Obama is the favorite. Having to win one out of three is a lot easier than having to win two out of three.

It is true, of course, that favorites don’t always win. The Florida Gators were favored over the Georgia Bulldogs last week in Jacksonville, but the Gators got beat. Six turnovers will do that to you almost every time, and that’s a turn of events that the oddsmakers didn’t anticipate. Likewise, it is entirely feasible that come Tuesday — especially given a somewhat wacky polling environment — Obama will join the Gators on the long list of favorites who went down in defeat.

But using the data source most favorable to the Republican cause, that’s not the way to bet.

Lies, damn lies and statistics…

Look, this all comes down to turnout and Rasmussen clearly uses Dem leaning turnout projections because we all know the GOP has the momentum and will crush Obama in the end.

That pretty much sums up what we’ll read from the cons on this thread…

Sorry Jay:

If each of the toss-up votes was an independent variable, your analysis is correct.
But the toss-ups comes in blocks – you must look at the state polling that represents each block.

Using 270 to win, gives you a better idea of how each candidate’s chances of reaching 270.
Plug in the Rasmussen assumptions produces the following:

If u leave WI in Obama’s column (Ras has WI tied) and Romney takes OH and FL:
Obama has 12 winning combinations and Romney has 10
A slight edge for Obama but no where near a 3 to 1 advantage.

Using the election tool (Venn diagram and bubbles) on the NYTimes politic page, it’s getting harder and harder to come up with scenarios that get Romney to 270. Especially with Florida trending back into play. An Obama win in Ohio and Florida mean lights out for Mitt. Obama can lose both and still win.

I use the USMC-link method to determine who is winning, I think it’s far more accurate than Nate Silver.

Right now the USMC-link is predicting an Obama win.

The USMC-link method is really quite simple. When USMC is posting hundreds of poll links a day that show a Romney lead, Romney is winning. When the polls are favorable to Obama he is quiet.

Right now, USMC is dead silent with the poll links which means Obama is winning, (and time is running out.)

You prove my point, Look.

You are forced to GIVE both Ohio and Florida to Romney in order to make it look equal. And last I looked, Obama isn’t giving either state away.

Conversely, if I “give” both Ohio and Florida to Obama instead, what does it look like? It looks OVER.

More like a 3rd of the country.
One third will be rabidly happy and the middle 3rd will be life goes on.

Other than some wedge social issues, there is just not enough to distinguish between the two. Romney proved that with his “me too” foreign policy debate.

Romney will win because obviously, Rasmussen is oversampling democrats. Its not intentional. Its just similar to facts always having a liberal bias. The other pollsters are obviously in the bag for Obama and so their polls are meaningless. I predict 750 electoral votes for Romney, with the extras coming from the other usually discounted 7 states.

Romney currently leads Obama 52% to 46% among voters who say they have already cast their ballots

Misleading or statistically invalid at this point.

Here’s why: early voting is open in Georgia. Anyone think that’s still in play? Romney could get 100% of the votes in this state and it still wouldn’t affect the outcome… but it will affect Gallup’s nationwide summary. Gallup admits that early voting is happening more in the south and west and not much at all in the very blue east.

What would be less misleading or statistically invalid would be early voting numbers from swing states. Right now Ohio and Florida are both showing Obama’s ground game is producing better results than Romney’s.

I just don’t see corporate America going on a hiring binge regardless of who wins next week.

That’s different from what the experts are saying. They were the first to come out with the 12 million jobs statement, even before Romney announced he had a “plan”.

The International Monetary Fund’s latest World Economic Outlook makes for gloomy reading. Growth projections have been revised downward almost everywhere, especially in Europe and the big emerging markets such as China. And yet, when looking out over the next four years — the next presidential term — the IMF projects that the United States will be the strongest of the world’s rich economies. U.S. growth is forecast to average 3 percent, much stronger than that of Germany or France (1.2 percent) or even Canada (2.3 percent). Increasingly, the evidence suggests that the United States has come out of the financial crisis of 2008 in better shape than its peers — because of the actions of its government.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/fareed-zakaria-the-us-economy-is-recovering-well/2012/10/24/9c34df9e-1df0-11e2-ba31-3083ca97c314_story.html

I am much more happy for a slow and steady recovery based upon a solid economic foundation as opposed to having another quick, bubble fueled recovery. It seems as though we may actually have a recovery that includes job recovery for once. Our past recoveries have all been jobless, which means they were not recoveries at all.

Jay:

Your “plantive plea” is an outcropping of the logic that you are basing your conclusion.

The trends that the recent polling has shown has been an eroding of Obama’s lead. States that were formerly close are now likely to be Romney wins. States that were more solidly in Obama’s favor are moving into the toss-up category.

Independents (both in polling as well as the early voting results) have been trending to Romney and historic patterns dictate that the Undecided usually break for the challenger (if they do vote).

In addition to these, the open question of “What will 2012 look like?” introduces an underlying bias to all polls. The polling result comes as a consequence of the sampling that was used to produce it. Most polls appearing to favor Obama assume that the turnout & affiliation will match 2008. Some go so far as to assume a higher distribution of Democrats than existed even at 2008’s record numbers. Most polls appearing to favor Romney assume numbers that match 2004 (when turnout & affiliation was almost equal).

If the numbers match 2008, Obama will be re-elected. If they do not, Romney will be elected. Your expectations for the election result are governed by your assumptions of who will cast the votes.

As opposed to hiding from the press?:

It’s been nearly three weeks since Mitt Romney’s last interview (if you count sitting down with Newsmax to be an interview) and it’s been more than a month since he last answered a question from his traveling press pool.
Compare that with President Obama who in just the past two weeks has sat down for interviews with NBC’s Brian Williams, at least seven local news stations, and the Des Moines Register editorial board. The president also took a question from a White House reporter following his Hurricane Sandy statement and agreed to interviews with The Tonight Show’s Jay Leno, The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart and MTV’s Sway Calloway. And keep in mind that President Obama did all that even though he doesn’t have the luxury of being able to make campaigning his full-time job.

Given the closeness of this race, you’d think Romney would take advantage of every opportunity available to him to get his message out, especially with President Obama making himself available. Instead, Romney’s running from the media. So here’s the question: What’s Mitt afraid of?

He is done and we can finally turn the page on this joke of a POTUS amateur who is in WAYYYYY over his head over to somebody who actually knows what he is doing. 6 more days and then a couple more months of lameduck. Hopefully, this idiot cannot destroy the country any more than he has the last 4 years. I hope you are right, but corporate America has been in the “do more with less” mindset for 10 30- 40 years now.

That mindset won’t change. What will change is when the “less” can’t keep pace with the demand. That will require hiring of more, which will increase the circulation of money through the economy. Our economy works in cycles. For a while, we were in a “doom” cycle where everything was leading to us going downward. Now, we have reversed and are beginning a climb upward. It starts as a trickle and begins to pick up steam as more and more people have more money for consumption. No business will turn down the opportunity to make more money, even if that requires hiring more people.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. That doesn’t mean that the stopped clock is right at any other time.

After the 2010 midterm elections, Silver concluded that Rasmussen’s polls were the least accurate of the major pollsters in 2010, having an average error of 5.8 points and a pro-Republican bias of 3.9 points according to Silver’s model. He singled out as an example the Hawaii Senate race, in which Rasmussen, in a poll completed three weeks before the election, showed incumbent Daniel Inouye only 13 points ahead, whereas in actuality he won by a 53% margin – a difference of 40 points from Rasmussen’s poll, or “the largest error ever recorded in a general election in FiveThirtyEight’s database, which includes all polls conducted since 1998″.

As an avowed Keynesian, that fact that we added to the debt during the worst economic downturn in 80 years, is to me, a good thing.
That said, some of the spending was questionable. Would like to have seen more investment in infrastructure or at least have the states use the money handed over used for that purpose as opposed to shoring up sagging state coffers and balancing their budgets.

Legal Sea Foods was MUCH better 10-15 years ago, IMO. They used high-quality fish and seafood and prepared it simply. In short, they let the fish/seafood shine on its own. They offered a Chef’s Choice; three small (3-4 oz) portions of whatever fish the chef felt like giving you, and I *never* was served a bad one of those.

Now, IMO, they’ve tarted up the menu with some gee-whiz preparations that sometimes overwhelm the still-great quality fish and shellfish on the menu. My advice when dining at Legal: have the chowda for an appetizer, then stick with anything prepared *simply.* If they need more than a single phrase to describe how it’s prepared, stay away from it.

SAVE THE EARTH- RECYCLE JOKES

Last Thursday while walking to lunch on the corner of Market and East Bay, I passed what appeared to be a homeless man standing on the corner of Wentworth and East Bay holding a hand-made sign that read, “Vote Obama, I need the money.”, I laughed to myself and admired the man for his misplaced, albeit blatant honesty.

Once inside one of my favorite restaurants, I noticed that my waiter was wearing a bright blue ,“Obama 12” tie; again I laughed to myself as he boldly and proudly advertised his political preference for all the world, and his customers, to see — just imagine the odds of encountering two such 1st Amendment harbingers of change in less than 10-minutes.

When the check finally came I decided not to tip my waiter and explained to him that I was going to implement a practical application of Obama’s Redistribution of Wealth concept as my own personal socialistic experiment. He stood there in stoic disbelief as I explained to him that I was going to redistribute his rightfully earned $10 tip to someone who I deemed more in need…a homeless fellow standing a few blocks north in front of the Harris Teeter parking lot.

Take a hard look at Rasmussen’s electoral map. Projected for Bozo, including the leaning and probables, 237 EV. Projected for Romney, 206, including the leaning and probables. That leaves the toss ups, CO 9, FL 29, IA 6, NH 4, NV 6, OH 18, VA 13 and WI 10. These are all toss ups, according to Rasmussen, meaning that they could go either way. Romney needs 64 to win. If you count CO with 9, FL with 29, OH with 18 and VA with 13, this gives Romney additional 69 EVs putting him at 275 and he wouldn’t even have to carry NH, NV, IA or WI, all of which could be in play. All Romney needs is CO, FL, OH and VA and this is a done deal. These states are called tossups for a reason. So don’t start celebrating yet, libs. This ain’t over by a long shot.

Sure. I worked non-tipping jobs like fast food and was still pleasant to customers. But frankly men who ask anyone personal $#!^ about politics and religion are creepy. They’re also likely to get a vapid-sounding generic non-answer, especially if they’re asking a woman.

In that situation older men don’t usually reward young women for being independent minded, plenty want @$$-kissing and ego stroking so they can feel superior to the dumb bimbo clearing their table. If they’re really interested in the waitress’s political opinions they’re the exception, not the rule.

I think the National Airport location is in Concourse C where US Airways operates. I haven’t ventured that far down when in DCA as I’m usually ticketed through Delta or Airtran/Southwest. I can’t recall seeing one in Logan, but I don’t remember which terminal I went through either. About the only thing I can remember is the long assed walk from Terminal A to the Hilton right at the airport. The one good thing about that particular trip was the hotel staff gave me a corner room overlooking the 9/11 Memorial.

Nah, they can only do that so much. Just as a farmer can’t make a living by planting his crops on a neighbors farmland, Corporate America has to put money into America at some point in order to continue to have a customer base here. They are smart and shrewd business people, and I’m sure they understand that better than anybody else. It’s a game of risk, and without risks there are no rewards. You don’t risk any more than you are willing to lose though. These companies are not going to risk losing the protections of America as they would not have it as easy in other countries as they have it here. That’s why you won’t see the rich abandon ship as there are very few places they can go and live as they do here.

Getting nervous I take it Jay?

As a political scientist, it’s common knowledge that nearly every poll over samples Democrats by at least 3 to 5%. That’s why most polls aren’t taken seriously. An incumbent like Obama who’s constantly under 50% in approval rating across the country faces a steep hill for reelection. Also even ABC news even reported that the gap in Pennsylvania and Minnesota was closing in Romney’s favor so yeah…… Election day will tell the tale.

More info on the slimey Mitt relief event efforts. And to be clear, the slimey part is the false attribution of “donated” items to attendees rather than the campaign. And some conned foolishly bragged about Mitt’s $5000 donation. The deafness of Mitt and his staff to real people is simply dumbfounding and offensive:

campaign aides reportedly spent $5,000 at a local Wal-Mart on supplies that could be put on display. When supporters arrived at the rally-turned-relief event, they were treated to the 10-minute video about Romney’s life, which was first unveiled at the RNC. The event ended with supporters lined up to hand over supplies and meet Romney. But according to BuzzFeed, this donation process was also staged:

Empty-handed supporters pled for entrance, with one woman asking, “What if we dropped off our donations up front?”

The volunteer gestured toward a pile of groceries conveniently stacked near the candidate. “Just grab something,” he said.

Two teenage boys retrieved a jar of peanut butter each, and got in line. When it was their turn, they handed their “donations” to Romney. He took them, smiled, and offered an earnest “Thank you.”

A couple of the consulting companies I worked for were HQd up there, so I spent a good bit of time consulting up in that area (Maine, Mass, RI, Connecticut). I’m not sure who is “attacking” Silver’s approach as much as questioning how a guy scores well one time is now the gold standard…there are shortcomings to all polls…the problem with Silver’s is that he has only experience in a single election year and nobody has seen (as far as I know) his proprietary formula…picking the 2008 outcomes were awesome but the vast majority of states had BO up 2.5% or more..if it supported Romney, you on this forum would attack it despite a lack of understanding as well..

Plus he is in the liberal NY Times that never runs anything negative about Obama and would not have hired Silver if he had projections that didn’t favor Obama.
——————————————————
This is such a demonstrably true statement that it’s amazing there are people who don’t understand that. Nate Silver can use numbers to razzle and dazzle with the best of them, but just as Jay Bookman knows his own ability to stay employed in the shrinking news media is dependent on him being an Obama/Democratic Party hack, Nate Silver knows very well that the NYTimes would have zero interest in his being on their payroll if he was going to present data that goes against the narrative that Obama is a clear favorite and that Romney is a long-shot.

You could be 100% correct. I have no idea if his methods are grounded in good statistics and analysis or it is biased.

If Georgia is sure to go GOP, how exactly does my vote count?

If a 3rd Party candidate gets 5% of the popular vote, then that party can run for offices in future elections. As long as people continue to support the 2-party system, states like Georgia can continue to stymie the competition.

Nate Silver and other forecasters are not saying that Obama is going to win next week, but simply that the odds are in his favor.

Conservatives should look at the bright side, his current .226 chance of a Romney victory is far greater than the likelihood of Dan Uggla getting a hit in his average Atlanta Brave at bat.

TBS — “Plus he is in the liberal NY Times that never runs anything negative about Obama and would not have hired Silver if he had projections that didn’t favor Obama.”

I feel obliged to point out once again that Nate Silver does not actually *conduct* any polling of his own. He analyzes and aggregates results from many of the major (and some of the minor) pollsters out there. Quite frankly, if Romney was showing a strong lead in the polls, Silver’s results would be showing that, too.

Elementary poll analysis is easy to do at home. Take a sheet of graph paper and mark a horizontal X axis on it (that will represent dates). Mark a vertical Y axis above and below it, with percentages; 1%, 2%, 3% and so on. Above the X axis is one candidate and below it is the other guy. Marks on Obama’s side of the X axis will represent polls in which he leads and marks on Romney’s side will represent polls in which Romney is leading.

Each day, mark the day’s various poll results. If RCP shows Romney up by 3 nationally, then find the date on your X axis and put a mark 3 units into Romney’s side of the graph. If Obama’s up by 3, then find the date and put a mark 3 units into his territory. You can use different colored pens to help distinguish each poll.

Do this for several different polls each day. Watch the results over time. What starts out as broadly-fanned-out results will get more and more tightly clustered as Election Day approaches. See if your final day’s polling results aren’t all within 2-3 points of where the actual vote winds up.

Of course, if you’ve got the computer skills, you can do your analysis that way, too.

Fred, that’s my point. Your interaction with strangers is usually good, and it sounds like you’ve never had an encounter where you actually feared for your physical safety. My interactions with strangers are usually the same, but if you’re a woman you’re simply more likely to encounter frightening nutbags and predators, or simply unwanted attention. It’s not our imagination, there’s good reason for women to be more on guard.

Decent men think women are paranoid because they’re not doing anything aggressive and women back up or get defensive when you’re just being friendly and normal. However creepy nutbags don’t wear signs or announce their presence. They’ll be perfectly nice and not set off any alarms…until they do.

Like I said, it’s just life and for women it’s kind of background noise. Men are usually mystified when you try to explain this to them. It’s not normal at all for them.

If Georgia is sure to go GOP, how exactly does my vote count? I heard the line was two hours long today at local early voting site…

I keep reading about 2 hour waits at early voting sites. I thought the reason to vote early was to avoid the long waits on election day. I’ve never had to stand in line 2 hours to vote on election day. This year is going to be great because lots of peeps are going to have already voted before election day.

I look forward to voting on election day, whether or not my vote “counts”. It is one of my responsibilities as a citizen, like paying taxes and griping about it.

And no matter how the election comes out, I won’t be distraught or overly gleeful. I’ll just get up the next day and keep on making a living and being happy to live in the greatest country on earth.

I just voted early. I was in line for 1 hour and 15 minutes. I want to alert readers to the fact that all candidates who were Republicans were placed first on the ballot (unless, of course, only a Democrat was running for office). Incumbents were placed sometimes first, and sometimes second or third. However, the Republican candidate, incumbent or not, was ALWAYS placed first and that occurrence was not contingent upon alphabetical order.

That means that the name of the President of the U.S. – the incumbent – was placed after the name of Gov. Romney on the ballot because Gov. Romney is the Republican candidate. It was obvious to me that the ballot was designed for Republicans always to be positioned first on the ballot. This is no insignificant point. The reason it is significant should be obvious to all, and all should be concerned about the stealthy manipulation of the public through this means.

I mentioned this when I was at the government building and I was given the following number to call. The fellow citizens to whom I mentioned this were also disturbed by this, whether they were Republicans or Democrats. This is not a partisan issue. It is a matter politicians not being allowed to manipulate an unaware public.

I urge all readers to call as I have just done – after you also have observed what I have just pointed out – to register your knowledge of how the ballot in Georgia was designed and to register your disapproval of the manipulation of the public

(404) 612-7020 – Fulton Elections Office Number

If you live outside of Fulton County, perhaps the personnel at this office number given above will give you the telephone number to call for your county. It was also suggested to me by personnel at the voting area that I call Georgia’s Secretary of State’s Office to register my complaint, which I have also done. Both telephone numbers were busy, but I left a message and my telephone number for a return call. I will keep calling until I am able to know in more detail why this occurred and to register my disapproval of this.

No, Constitution states Congress sets the date of the election and all states have to vote on the same day. Congress would have to change the date and it would apply everywhere. Not likely to happen.

E. Cat — “seriously…could they post pone or extend the election if they cant get power and clear roads to the polling places in the NE”

I’ve been trying to figure this out for the last few days, and the best answer I’ve come up with is ‘I don’t think so.’

Seems like states are free to *conduct* elections pretty much however they want, with certain Federal restrictions (can’t impose a poll tax or literacy test to vote, eligible to vote at 18, etc), but that Election Day is the drop-dead date. From what I can find, there are *extremely few* exceptions to the ‘all votes received or postmarked by Election Day’ rule.

I suppose Congress could do something, but given its intransigence in recent years, I think that’s pretty unlikely.

So even though I’m not absolutely certain, I’m going to go with ‘don’t think so.’

The electoral college is more than just an antiquated system of electing the president related to the logistics of a national election 200 years ago. The all-or-none rules in most states is also a way that such states can exert the maximum political clout and for that reason it isn’t likely to go away. I would be in favor of abolishing it because the all or none rule magnifies the temptation for voter fraud in a close state and limits the campaign to just a few ‘battlegrounds’.

As an insight into his predictive skill, in the 2010 midterm election Morris predicted that the GOP would see massive gains retaking both the senate and the house. House prediction was dead on and significant gains made in senate although short of taking majority by 4 seats.

Sorry you saw my snark as deflection.
It was meant to illustrate the exact point that Washington was trying to make.

Rush and those like him (on both sides of the aisle) offer nothing of substance. His sole mission is to attract sponsors and fatten his wallet. And in and of itself, that is capitalism at its best. He has a product and he sells it and makes a handsome profit doing so. Unfortunately, his product is intellectual dishonesty taken to a terrifying level. Same thing can be said about the campaigns being waged now as well.

It takes a lot of effort to weed through the chaff – and at the end of the day there isn’t enough wheat to be found to justify the work it seems.

This is a bizarre election. On the one hand, the data based arguments concerning the critical independent vote, estimates of the white vote, estimates of the likely return of 1.7M white voters who did not vote in 08, plus the notion that the democrats target their hard core base for early voting, while the republicans target the less reliable voters of their base, would all seem to suggest that Romney should win fairly easily. And in particular, the much vaunted democratic ground game in Ohio is not really that impressive when you look at the data carefully. For example, it is my understanding that while the democrats have upped the number of early voters, the actually percentage has dropped significantly as compared to 08, suggesting a less potent ground game, and considerably less motivation by democratic voters. Nation wide, in almost every poll, the republicans are seen as far more motivated than the democrats, which cant be good for Obama. So I dont see how Romney loses. And then we have Silver, from FiveThirtyEight. He usually gets it right. And right now, he is calling it for Obama. I guess it will become pretty obvious when returns start coming in from NC, VA, and FL. If they come in at better percentages than expected, it probably spells doom for Obama in Ohio, and elsewhere.

TBS,

I still think Romney will edge Obama out and will win the popular vote as well. A few weeks ago I felt Obama would be reelected but too much has slipped away from him in a very short time. The first debate took a heavy toll. In the last debate Obama won the battle but lost the war. Romney closed the gap with women, Independents are up about 10 pts for Romney, Romney’s up 8 pts. with men, I saw just yesterday that Christian Hispanics are turning from Obama and that might mean Romney could maybe capture 28% of the Hispanic vote, Also, Rasmussen’s recent polling shows 16% of White Democrats breaking for Romney.

As I see it, there is a bright side to Obama being re-elected. When inflation spirals out of control within the next two or three years because of his money printing monetary policy and when the medicaire cuts and the inavailability of healthcare brought about by Obamacare comes into full bloom, the people are going to be pissed off. Severely pissed off. And the entitlement crowd are really going to be pissed when the money runs out for them and their cards aren’t worth crap.

The bad part is, if Romney is elected, he will also be blamed because of his being the president at the time these things occurred even though he had nothing to do with what brought these things upon us.

So Jay, if Obama is elected, celebrate on the 7th because it won’t be long at all before you and the media will no longer be able to cover for him and what he has done to this country. It will be a very short lived victory dance for you and your followers. Because of our deficit, this country is literally at the “end of its rope” and we are now in the position that nobody can “save” us. NOBODY. Sad to think about isn’t it?

http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/04/rasmussen-polls-were-biased-and-inaccurate-quinnipiac-surveyusa-performed-strongly/

“The 105 polls released in Senate and gubernatorial races by Rasmussen Reports and its subsidiary, Pulse Opinion Research, missed the final margin between the candidates by 5.8 points, a considerably higher figure than that achieved by most other pollsters. Some 13 of its polls missed by 10 or more points, including one in the Hawaii Senate race that missed the final margin between the candidates by 40 points, the largest error ever recorded in a general election in FiveThirtyEight’s database, which includes all polls conducted since 1998.

Moreover, Rasmussen’s polls were quite biased, overestimating the standing of the Republican candidate by almost 4 points on average. In just 12 cases, Rasmussen’s polls overestimated the margin for the Democrat by 3 or more points. But it did so for the Republican candidate in 55 cases — that is, in more than half of the polls that it issued.”

New Projection of Election Results: Romney 52, Obama 47

“The bipartisan Battleground Poll, in its “vote election model,” is projecting that Mitt Romney will defeat President Obama 52 percent to 47 percent. The poll also found that Romney has an even greater advantage among middle class voters, 52 percent to 45 percent.

The poll’s election model takes into account variables including voter intensity, age, and education, and voters who are certain in their vote. The race “remains very close in the surface,” Goeas said, “but the political environment and the composition of the likely electorate favor Governor Romney.”

Mr. Billings, that is an article written to deceive, and in your case it clearly succeeded.

In the actual Battleground Poll, Obama is up 49-48. The little “election model” referred to in your link is some kind of thing that has nothing to do with the Battleground Poll, which is conducted jointly by a Democratic and Republican pollsters.

The Republican pollster took the Battleground results, ran them through his own little “model,” and spun the results to produce the 52-47 outcome that you and others now trot out.

Again, that “model” has nothing to do with the Battleground poll, and was created as partisan spin.

The con arguement for this is that they can’t make a profit and stay in business unless these jobs and factories go to China, etc. This is not true. They can keep the jobs and factories here in America and make a good profit. Or, they can go overseas and make a great profit. Needless to say, they go for the maximun profit and don’t mind, in the slightest, turning their backs on the American worker.

Well, I’m sorry you missed out on a great Southren tradition. Us boys would get together with bars of soap to soap the windows of people that never had treats. And if we really didn’t like somebody, we’d turn over their outhouse and laugh about them wandering about looking for a place to go in the morning. “A Republican, in a wheelchair, entered a restaurant one afternoon and asked the waitress for a cup of coffee. The Republican looked across the restaurant and asked, “Is that Jesus sitting over there?”
The waitress nodded “yes,” so the Republican requested that she give Jesus a cup of coffee, on him.

The next patron to come in was a Libertarian, with a hunched back. He shuffled over to a booth, painfully sat down, and asked the waitress for a cup of hot tea. He also glanced across the restaurant and asked, “Is that Jesus, over there?” The waitress nodded, so the Libertarian asked her to give Jesus a cup of hot tea, “My treat.”

The third patron to come into the restaurant was a Democrat on crutches. He hobbled over to a booth, sat down and hollered, “Hey there honey! How’s about getting me a cold mug of Miller Light?” He too looked across the restaurant and asked, “Isn’t that God’s boy over there?”
The waitress nodded, so the Democrat directed her to give Jesus a cold beer. “On my bill,” he said loudly.

As Jesus got up to leave, he passed by the Republican, touched him and said, “For your kindness, you are healed.” The Republican felt the strength come back into his legs, got up, and danced a jig out the door.

Jesus passed by the Libertarian, touched him and said, “For your kindness, you are healed.” The Libertarian felt his back straightening up and he raised his hands, praised the Lord, and did a series of back flips out the door.

Then, Jesus walked towards the Democrat, just smiling. The Democrat jumped up and yelled, “Don’t touch me …. I’m on disability.”

10 Reasons to Vote for Obama
1. You believe that Government is the solution to all problems and the bigger the government is the more robust the economy.
2. You believe that people who want to keep most of what they have worked to earn are greedy and shouldbe criticized and people who use the Government to take from others are deserving and are the foundation of our country.
3.You believe in equal reward for unequal effort and risk.
4.You want to find out what Obama promised the Russian Premier when he said he would have more flexibility after the election.
5.You enjoy watching the news weasels fawn all over Obama and lose all ability at objective reporting.
6. You believe that never holding a private job and being a community organizer is ample experience to be president but a life time of succesfully running businesses and being a Governor are not.
7. You believe that heathcare, food, clothing ,education , and housing are a right and that someone should provide you with these.
8. You actually believe in centrally managed socialist economy and dispite all the evidence that it has failled miserable everywhere it has been tried you cling to the notion that it just needs one more chance.
9. You believe slogans like “hope and change” and “moving forward” have deep and clear meaning but when one outlines their agenda they are not providing enough details.
10. You want to enjoy a whole week where you are not accused of being a racist!

4)I want to see if he’s going to give more Alaskan Islands to Russia, yes.
5)it is fun to watch grown people go ga-ga over someone.
6)well, of course, I’ve said before, I coach youth league sports, so I know I could qualify to be President.
7)those things are a right. duh.
8)when one fails, try and try again. surely someday it will work. plus, all those other countries just aren’t doing it right.
9)moving forward, of course, after I had to take a pay cut to keep my job, that is exactly the direction I want to keep striving for.

In a way it’s kinda funny you used that phraseology.
I just finished watching the History Channel’s series, “The Men Who Built America”
Fascinating stuff – and while some of the details get muddled in “dramatic license”, the stories are reasonably accurate.

My only issue was the title of the series. It would be more accurate to title it as:
“The men who saw opportunity, seized it, ruthlessly quashed all competition and made personal fortunes in the tens and hundreds of billion dollars”

Now I am not anti-capitalist, nor am I against someone seeing and cashing in on opportunity.
But I would never think to paint any of them as ‘patriots’ who were on a mission to make life better for Americans. That what they accomplished did provide for some measure of benefit was incidental, not causitive.

The issue is not simply that someone might mark a ballot by order of appearance of the candidates, but that order of appearance implies justifiable dominance when one party or the other is always positioned first. The study of psychology reveals more than the average person is aware – especially knowledge of corporate and industrial psychological tactics. Knowledge is power. The people cannot have the power unless they are first aware of subtle manipulation of their perceptions. As I have often advised on this blog – look deeper than the surface.

I guess I’d forgotten that the NYC Marathon was this weekend. Not really sure how I feel about the plans to run it even though the city’s still pretty much a shambles.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/01/sports/new-york-city-marathon-may-cancel-opening-ceremony-and-5k.html?_r=0

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and marathon organizers have said the race will go on as scheduled, as it has every year since 1970, as a symbol of the city’s ability to rally after hard times.

“It’s a great event for New York, and I think for those who were lost, you know, you’ve got to believe they would want us to have an economy and have a city go on for those that they left behind,” Bloomberg said.

But that plan has been met with a backlash from area residents and even many runners registered for the marathon who believe it is in poor taste to hold a road race through the five boroughs as hundreds of thousands of people in nearby areas continue to suffer the damage wrought by the storm.

Critics of the plan to hold the marathon also say that diverting the police and fire crews to perform marathon duties is a misuse of precious public services.

Greenspan underestimated the effect of personal greed.

But his point was that he did not think the kingpins would allow that kind of profiteering to occur that would threaten the very basis of the system. And who can blame him.

Here’s what you need to know! In the 2008 elections Rassmussen had a 92% accuracy on the outcome of the election. All other polls were as low as 30%-65% . So it doesn’t matter what other polls say, they are not as accurate as rasmussen.

I guess Gallup having Romney leading the President for the last ten days is also in the tank for Romney along with Rasmussen. Both of these polling organization are reputable and have a history for accuracy going back many years. This is the first election I have seen Rasmussen and Gallup come under attack for their collective polling. They where both just fine until they started the President falling behind, then they are both in the tank for Romney??

“The local mayor, who attended the rally, rejected that statement from Lowery. “The Bible doesn’t say anything about white or black to go to heaven,” Mayor John Howard said. “I have great number of black and white friends. However, we are nowhere near that point and you may be certain jobs will continue to go overseas for as long it’s profitable.

I think we’re very close to that point, much closer due to the nature of the recession of 2007-2008.

Prior to the recession, people were borderline reckless with credit purchases. When credit froze, that snapped many people back to the reality that they can’t spend what they don’t have. As a result, consumption took a big hit as the rate of savings increased. It will be a while before people get the urge to go all gung ho on credit. I think it will take a long time before we see credit standards get as loose as they were in the early 2000’s.

Because of that, the only way companies will survive here is by putting money into the hands of people they want to become consumers. Given the entrenched ideology of austerity type measurements from the government, there is only one other group that can push consumption enough to keep our economy going. The 1% don’t consume enough on a daily basis to run the economy on their own. It takes consumption from the other 99% as well.

Very close 2nd:
Obama 290
Romney 248

Obama takes OH

Not too distant 3rd:

Obama 285
Romney 253

Romney takes OH and loses VA

Only 3 out of 17 runs gave Romney an outright win:
All of which includes Romney takes OH and VA and CO

So I either crow or eat crow next week.

I believe you’re referring to the “Report Card” found here: http://electoralmap.net/2012/2008_election.php#reportcard

That Report Card is outdated and invalid. Notice that the data used is from November 12th, before all ballots had been tallied. It uses an incorrect spread of a 6.5 win for Obama, when he in fact won by 7.2 percent. Notice it says Rasmussen’s 6-point spread was off by 0.5. Wrong again. Rasmussen was actually off by 1.2 percent. Notice how it says CNN & Ipsos were both off by 0.5. Wrong again. They were in fact more accurate than Rasmussen with their 7-point spread, being off by only 0.2 percent.

Rasmussen was not the most accurate pollster in 2008.

Sorry man.
In terms of GDP:
In 1929 when the great depression hit, the US GDP halved over 4 years. It did not reach its pre-crash levels until 1940, a full 11 years later.

In terms of the recession of 2008, the US GDP dropped by about 3% and we reached pre-recession levels by the end of 2010.

We can throw economic stats back forth all day and the unemployment rate (which some use as a recession marker) remains stubbornly high. The recovery is tepid but it IS a recovery and if you have specific factors to discuss regarding what could have been done to accelerate the recovery I am all ears.

Need to cut The Incredibly Reverend Joseph Lowery some slack. At 91 he can’t see the teleprompter and his hearing aid is tuned to Snoop Dog Dump. But I do hope he has misread the scriptures. I would hate to spend eternity with Bookman. The man has horrible judgement when it comes to politics, music, and movies. Plus based on what I know about him he cheats at cards.

Back in 2005 the left wing intelligentsia claimed that Dubya had a Weather Machine and could dial up an earthquake, tornado, or hurricane anytime he wanted. Even for a group not renowned for even rudimentary cognitive skills, that was just too bizarre. Even more puzzling is why Dubya would want to create Hurricane Katrina. But they might be on to something. Maybe it was left in the Oval Office and used by Jug Ears to create Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy has certainly helped to draw the attention of the American people from the fact that Zippy is the most inept, incompetent, corrupt, mendacious, murdering, evil tyrant to ever illegally seize power in the history of civilization and the greatest disaster to befall the human race since Bubonic Plague. He has destroyed our economy and developed a foreign policy that makes North Korea look like Switzerland. But the hurricane has provided cover and now he can go on free tv: This is Your pResident Bampøt Hussein Høøver ØDumbø, the Killer of Osama bin Biden and your wallet, with an important public service announcement: It’s raining out there. Put your rubbers on before going outdoors. Or if you are Sandra Fluke before going to the Shriners Convention.

Only one politician in history has ever claimed to be able to control the weather: ØDumbø. Not even Caligula who declared himself to be a living god stated he could alter the weather. But Zippy did when he said that he was going to lower the sea levels and heal the planet. But the flooding on the east coast illustrates his perfidy.

Truly The Indonesian Imbecile is the most evil excuse for a human being to walk the North American continent since Blackbeard the Pirate. Oh well, next Tuesday will spend however long it takes to cancel Bookman’s vote.

Watch all the right wing zealots vanish as the winner bias starts to take hold. As the clock runs down, states will want to be on the winning side to be more favorably looked upon. Suddenly, two out of three voters on the street will swear he or she voted for Obama. And if government is to work, voters had better return a House and Senate more cooperative than before, or America will sink as a nation.

I love how libs like to spin things. I am not ignorant of the fact that this is a tight race. However, I am also not ignorant of the fact that in many past elections Rasmussen has been one of the most accurate predictor of the actual election results.

Now, since you are using Rasmussen to “prove” that Obama is the clear favorite because Romney on has only 206 solid electoral votes, you must hope that the these polls are wrong. Based on current results on the site, Romney leads in Colarado, Florida, New Hampshire, Ohio and Virginia which would put 73 additional electoral votes in Romney’s camp. Do the math!

Again, I am only focusing on Rasmussen because it’s the one used in this article to “prove” Obama is going to win, but conveniently, the finer details of the poll are left out.

What is wrong with the media?!?! Good lord this is despicable. I have been following Rasmussen polls because they are the only ones even trying to present an accurate picture (if you want to debate that go back to polling data in 08 to verify my claim. Most had Obama winning by 9-13% Rasmussen had him by 7%. He won by 7%) and they are not predicting an Obama victory. They do have him leading in the # of secured electoral votes… AND the number of leaning states. In the toss up states Romney is shown cleaning up. By narrow margins granted but winning Fl, Ohio, and Col among others. If you want to site another poll that shows Obama as a clear favorite that’s fine there are several to chose from but stop twisting the truth. You can argue your headline doesnt lie but it clearly misleads and misrepresents reality.

Numeros

@Bill,

Most did not have Obama winning by 9-13% in 2008. A sampling of 20 top pollsters shows
Three had Obama by 5.
Three had him by 6.
Four had him by 7.
Four had him by 8.
Three had him by 9.
Three had him by 11.

And Rasmussen did not have Obama winning by 7. He had Obama by 6: 52/46.
CNN & Ipsos were the two who nailed it with 7: 53/46.

Reality Check

November 1st, 2012
9:55 am

Jym Allyn, when the facts aren’t on your side, resort to name calling, innuendo, and bad analogies. IF, you are going to site a source and use it as proof positive of a given outcome, then you must use ALL the facts, from that source; not just the ones convenient to your desired result.

As Bill pointed out, Rasmussen was the only one in 2008 that had the actual outcome right in the polls. That is a verifiable fact, maybe inconvenient to you, but it is fact. Again, I am not saying anything about the election being a lock for Romney, but if you are going to site sources, be honest in your facts. Based on the Rasmussen poll that Mr. Bookman sited to prove Obama’s going to win, the current results show 273 electoral votes either locked for, leaning toward, or slightly favoring Romney.

Numeros

November 1st, 2012

@Reality Check

Rasmussen did NOT have the actual outcome right in 2008. Even Rasmussen admits that. I quote from the Rasmussen website: “Barack Obama won 53%-46%, and our final poll showed him winning 52% to 46%”

Two pollsters DID nail the final outcome however. They were CNN and Ipsos, who both showed Obama winning 53% to 46%. This information is easily verifiable on sites such as Real Clear Politics.

Four years ago the US was losing 159,000 jobs per month. December of
2008 the US actually lost 524,000 jobs for the month. Now we are creating an
average 120,000 jobs per month. The unemployment rate has gone down under this
administration, to 7.8%. Not ideal, but we are moving in the right direction.
You don’t have to take it from me. We have the Bureau
of Labor Statistics. You can Google them and go to their website. The
Institute for Supply Management’s Manufacturing Business Survey
Committee reports that manufacturing is growing at the highest level since
2007. Again don’t take it from me. Google them for their website. Please
do not let others trick you into believing things are worse. We are getting
better, America. Let’s stay the course and vote for Obama.

You can check this data at the Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS) site.
Or just do a search for jobs report December 2008. Do the same for September 2012 and you’ll find that 120,000 jobs were
created.

What this guy fails to tell you is that of the 9 swing states Romney is leading in 6 of them, tied in 2 and the only one Obama leads in is Nevada. If a state is tied its going to go red because the undecided vote always overwhelmingly 70-80% goes for the challenger. So according to rasmussen Romney will win 8 of the 9 toss up states. That’s 89 more electorial votes to add to Romneys 206 and 6 more electorial votes to add to Obamas 237. That makes it Romney 295- Obama 243. Romney will win the popular vote 52-48.

Recently, (now that my friend thinks romney is going to win), my friend has kindly said that i will now be allowed to jist rub my hands in feces instead of ingesting it if romney were to win.

All bets aside, in this election i am voting for the 3rd choice. Yes, the 3rd choice…. The libertarian partys, GARY JOHNSON.

If gary johnson were to get a minimum of 5% of the popular vote, it would also allow the libertarian party (the fastest growing party in america), equal ballot acces, participation in debates, and additional federal funding. There are many americans that dont generally vote due to the electoral college system. Realistically, in the past 20+ years, when voting for repub or dem in states such as texas, california, new york, etc….. your vote just doesnt count!! It is my hope that some day, we will have better choices than these 2 parties that most feel they have to choose from. Remember – this year…… there is another choice. Even if you dont believe in the liberitarian party belief system, your vote would be for a 3rd party in the future. It would keep the beurocrats in washington on their toes….and just 5% of the popular vote could change this perminantly!! The libertarian party is closer to my belief system than either of these 2 parties, although i do disagree with some of their beliefs. I do believe we need a federal government who is relied upon for services (dissimilar to what the libertarian party currently claims to stand for). Libertarian party also believes in the legalization of drugs. (I dont believe in this). However, when listening to gary johnson speak (on youtube), he is a realist and knows and agrees with all of this. Mainly, I just want another choice in the future than these 2 beurocrats running for president this year. Now, things are bad in this country, dont get me wrong. But im no more sure of who romney is and what he stands for then i was 6 months ago. Like many, i was surprised to see how rommey came out strong at the first debate. But i was also surprised at how bad he was in the 3rd debate. This was romneys chance to shine! Obamas foreign policy has been horrible! Romney could have pointed out egypt, lybia, syria, iran…..whats next? He barely pointed out our horrible stance in isreal. (our only ally and most important ally in this region). Gary johnson pointed out what romney said regarding our aid to pakistan and weather we shuld continue aid….Romneys response (paraphrased) “of course we should continue aid. they have nuclear weapons, so we habe to be their friend and continue aid”. Gary johnson pointed this out and rightly asks…what kind of message this sends? Get nukes and we will be your friend? Ridiculous statement for someone who is so close to the whitehouse door. I understand romney had to play it safe, agreeing with obamas foreign policy….(since he nor his running mate have zero foreign policy experience), but that comment is ludicrous. If you are unsure because you hate them both, vote Gary Johnson 2012. You are voting for a future where there will be another choice! Thanks for reading.

If this analysis were presented in a corporate setting to senior management, you’d be tossed out before you even began. Their standards of analysis and decision-making are so much higher than the press because the future of the company could be at stake. What believable analysis says that polls taken 2 months before the election should be given equal or greater weight to polls taken 1 week before the election. Isn’t it logical that at least some of the undecideds 2 months ago have become committed voters in the polling one week before the election? There are more glaring holes in the analysis, but I’m too tired to go into it all. I hope most readers have smarter analysitical minds than this author.

LOL @ making the big bucks. This guy is a nobody. I agree with his conclusion that Obama will win. Yes his is also right in teaching us all the idea that 2 is in fact easier to win than 1. What a deep thinking this silly clown is… A nobody in a world where you make money based on being a somebody. Back to jerking off to a picture or Mitch Album for this hack. Perhaps if he grows his hair past his ears we will have heard of him?

Rasmussen only polls landlines, and the social media is connected through cell phones. A whole demographic is missing — therefore, their polling is suspect. I think Obama — perhaps a squeaker, but Obama. He took over this country on the brink of financial collapse, then had only two years to get anything done. What do Americans expect to repair the damage of the Bush-Cheney incompetence?

The horror. Eastwood on Hannity. He’s been one of my screen idols for almost 50 years. Shades of Zell. I know Clint’s been a Republican a long time, but I had him pegged as a centrist. No centrist I know would share the camera with Hannity

I can’t believe that anyone would vote for Obama after the whole benghazi situation. Four americans died because their request for more security was denied. The 2 Navy Seals may have lived had the request for help been granted when the attack began. (Those Navy Seals are heros because they believed no man should be left behind) Too bad Obama would not help the men in Benghazi. And now everyone wants to applaud because he is “helping” during the huricaine? Where has he been the last 4 years? How crazy is it that anyone thinks Obama cares about anything but winning the election? But I guess those out there crazy enough to vote for Obama again do not want to know the truth. Obama has done nothing for the economy. My health insurance premiums have gone up and are going up again this year. The price of gas is crazy yet he blocked the Keystone Pipeline.
