From the Royal Oak (Mich.) Daily Tribune:
Chrysler Group LLC’s top executive said any statements by presidential candidate Mitt Romney suggesting the company was moving Jeep production from its assembly complex in Toledo, Ohio was simply not true.
“Chrysler Group’s production plans for the Jeep brand have become the focus of public debate,” Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said in a statement on Tuesday.
“I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position: Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China,” he continued. “Jeep assembly lines will remain in operation in the United States and will constitute the backbone of the brand. … It is inaccurate to suggest anything different.”
Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has begun running ads in Ohio, stating Chrysler planned to move Jeep production to China. Analysts described the ads as part of Romney’s efforts to pry the state’s pivotal 18 electoral votes from President Barack Obama.
The letter from Marchionne, published first in the Detroit News, went on to explain:
“North American production is critical to achieving our goal of selling 800,000 Jeep vehicles by 2014. In fact, U.S. production of our Jeep models has nearly tripled (it is expected to be up 185%) since 2009 in order to keep up with global demand.
We also are investing to improve and expand our entire U.S. operations, including our Jeep facilities. The numbers tell the story:
– We will invest more than $1.7 billion to develop and produce the next generation Jeep SUV, the successor of the Jeep Liberty — including $500 million directly to tool and expand our Toledo Assembly Complex and will be adding about 1,100 jobs on a second shift by 2013.
– At our Jefferson North Assembly Plant, where we build the Jeep Grand Cherokee, we have created 2,000 jobs since June 2009 and have invested more than $1.8 billion.
– In Belvidere, where we build two Jeep models, we have added two shifts since 2009 resulting in an additional 2,600 jobs.
With the increase in demand for our vehicles, especially Jeep branded vehicles, we have added more than 11,200 U.S. jobs since 2009. Plants producing Jeep branded vehicles alone have seen the number of people invested in the success of the Jeep brand grow to more than 9,300 hourly jobs from 4,700. This will increase by an additional 1,100 as the Liberty successor, which will be produced in Toledo, is introduced for global distribution in the second quarter of 2013.”
It’s hard to predict the impact of such events, especially in the media shadow of Hurricane Sandy coverage. But you would think that the Romney campaign’s blatant willingness to mislead and to frighten thousands of Americans unnecessarily about their job security at Jeep would have a serious effect on public opinion and would lead at least some voters to question his credibility on a range of other issues as well. It demonstrates a fundamental lack of respect for those to whom the truth about such matters is critically important.

This is classic Karl Rove politics, attack your opponents greatest strength. Romney was challenged with working class white voters in Ohio due to the auto bailout and even after Denver was struggling to pull even. He felt more of the same was not going to work in the final days so this is a Hail Mary.
It reminds me of the tactic Rove used to great success when he saw his conflict avoiding President up against a Purple Heart winning volunteer. Before we knew it, Kerry was less honorable than a guy who made sure he was trained on a plane absent from the Vietnam theater. The results were to rally his base and confuse enough others to neutralize the weakness.

I’ll take Obama’s job creation record over Bush’s any day. It’s not great, but if you’re claiming that Obama’s economic record is disastrous, then Bush’s was an unmitigated apocalypse.

http://www.freep.com/article/20121030/BUSINESS01/121030036/1205/business01/Romney-implies-GM-used-U-S-aid-create-jobs-China
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has broadened his attack on President Barack Obama’s auto industry restructuring, implying that General Motors used the aid to hire more workers in China than in the U.S.
“Barack Obama says he saved the auto industry. But for who? Ohio or China?” says the narrator in a radio spot running in Ohio. “Under President Obama, GM cut 15,000 American jobs, but they are planning to double the number of cars built in China, which means 15,000 more jobs for China. And now comes word that Chrysler plans to start making Jeeps in, you guessed it, China.”
GM quickly defended its performance.
“We’ve clearly entered some parallel universe during these last few days,” GM spokesman Greg Martin said. “No amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the U.S. and repatriating profits back to this country.”
First, Chrysler had to set the record straight, and now GM does the same. I thought Romney was supposed to be the business leader, but it seems like he’s the business anger generator.

Doug — “Sorry Joe you sound like good guy but I can’t vote for Obama again.”
You do what you have to do, Doug, but I’m going to leave you with this.
I spent over 20 years of my adult life voting for Republicans. I even enlisted in the Army during the Reagan Administration. But I left the GOP behind in late 2003/early 2004. I’d had enough of the ‘don’t question us’ attitude from party leaders and ‘our way is the only way that works’ argument when the GOP’s economic policies clearly weren’t working. And the straw that broke the camel’s back for me was Iraq. I’d been in uniform during the first dance with Saddam Hussein, and even though I didn’t like that President Bush (the elder) stopped short of Baghdad, I respected him for doing the right thing and stopping when the Iraqi government said ‘we give.’
And when we went back into Iraq. saying ‘we know where the WMD are’ but they didn’t start falling out of warehouses and trucks within about a day, I knew we’d been lied to by President Bush (the younger).
I might go back to the GOP one day. But I don’t see it happening anytime soon. So ask yourself this: if the GOP can disillusion and run off a gun-owning disabled veteran who was raised up in the South and who comes from good hillbilly stock — then do you think it matters to them whether you stick with them or not?
I volunteered for the GOP for several years. And in the end, they just didn’t care if I stuck with them or not. All they care about it power, and the GOP leaders today will say and do anything to get and keep it.
So you go ahead and hang with them if you think it’s the right thing to do. But bear in mind that I spent many years supporting them, volunteering for them and voting for them — but in the final analysis, they don’t really care what *you* as a voter want. It’s all about what *they* want.

In the year following Obama’s inauguration, the U.S. economy lost about 4.3 million jobs. 4.5 million jobs have been added back since then, a number that would be a lot higher if so many government jobs had not been lost.
Again Doug, just how fast was the recovery supposed to fully recover after the Bush Great Recession?

Here we go. I’m always in search for the “man behind the curtain” so to speak. With the vigor that’s being shown behind this whole auto bailout/Jeep/Chrysler/Fiat issue, it seems quite possible that there’s big money somewhere pulling the strings on this one..
Per Wiki:
In 2007, Cerberus and about 100 other investors purchased an 80% stake in Chrysler for $7.4 billion[35] seeking to bolster the auto maker’s performance by operating as an independent company. In 2008, the plan collapsed due to an unprecedented slowdown in the U.S. auto industry and a lack of capital…
On March 30, 2009, it was announced that Cerberus Capital Management would voluntarily give up its equity stake in the Chrysler auto company as a condition of the U.S. Treasury Department’s bailout deal, but would retain its stake in Chrysler’s financing arm, Chrysler Financial. Cerberus agreed to provide $2 billion to backstop a $4 billion December 2008 U.S. Treasury Department loan given to Chrysler. In exchange for obtaining that loan, it promised many concessions including surrendering equity, foregoing profits, and giving up board seats. U.S. Treasury and the Obama administration recognized the “sacrifices by key stakeholders” in an effort to give Chrysler the “opportunity to thrive as a long-term viable 21st century company.”
When you look at who founded Cerberus, one of the co-founders is Steve Feinberg. A peek at his wiki page shows:
The 2007 Cerberus purchase of Chrysler Corp. from Germany’s Daimler Benz became a major and, as of 2009, unsuccessful initiative by Feinberg into a higher-profile investment. Feinberg and others at the firm explicitly presented the investment as patriotic, but many critics ultimately questioned that characterization, especially after Chrysler had to seek and take federal aid. (Chrysler now, with federal help, has been sold to Fiat.) As of 2009, Cerberus was facing major calls from its investors for redemptions, and had written down its investment in Chrysler to 19 cents on the dollar. Had there not been the federal bailout, the investment could have been worth nothing.
Without the bailout, they would have drawn a fat goose egg. But, in order to get the bailout, they had to forego profits, and you know how private equity is all about profits. Not to mention that Mr. Feinberg’s politics lean right…
Steve and Gisela Feinberg are prolific donors to the Republican Party and related organizations. Former Republican Vice President of the United States Dan Quayle works for Cerberus as Chairman of Global Investments, and former United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was a client.
I’m sure there are many deep-pocketed people angry at the loss of profits from the Chrysler bailout. I’m not going to say they are behind this whole fiasco, but given how big money operates, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they were.

You can;t make this up– From O “This is a tough time for a lot of people; millions of folks all across the Eastern Seaboard, but America’s tougher. And we’re tougher because we pull together, we leave nobody behind, we make sure we respond as a nation and remind ourselves that whenever an American is in need, all of stand together to make sure we’re providing the help that’s necessary.” ——-Except if your in Benghazi

USMC. …….. I think Romney will take woman’s rights back 30 years…… I think he is not a job creator, since he was a pioneer in out sourcing.
I think his comments on the 47% was heartless. I think his statement about FEMA was wrong, yet he did change his mind today.
I don’t think he really cars about the poor, but his buddies in the TOP of the 1 %. and I think his comment about 2 Trillion more spending for new ships was only a campaign promise to win a state.
I can answer more of you ask.

Doug: What a crappy job the last few years. I applaud you for your success in it during that time. Might I offer a suggestion? Tune your radio AWAY from WSB while you are riding around. Research things a little more.
To use JHM’s analogy, DON’T let your ex wife and her free loading new boyfriend send you to the couch in your own house. Free your mind and become an independent. Vote for this guy: Gary Johnson.
Make a DIFFERENCE this election. A republican vote or a Democratic vote here in Georgia is wasted. Romeny sweeps the state hands down. Make a difference though by trying to get a REAL third party to the 5 % margin where they can compete.
