Sandy raises the odds of major election-night surprises
This election season already had many of the ingredients of a pollster’s nightmare. Millions of Americans are abandoning land-line telephones, and thanks to caller ID and obnoxious telemarketing, millions of others refuse to answer those landlines unless they know who the caller is. The increased use of cellphones — many young people use them as text machines or for Internet access, seldom taking calls on their phones — have made it difficult to be confident that you’re getting your demographics right.
Throw in the growing use of early voting and the difficulty of predicting what the 2012 electorate will look like, and you have a real potential for polling mistakes.
And then, of course, there’s Hurricane Sandy. Millions of Americans are without power, hundreds of thousands have evacuated, thousands have seen their homes destroyed or seriously damaged and at last count roughly 30 people have been killed. According to weather forecasters, the storm is far from over as it moves inland.
That kind of devastation and dislocation makes the presidential race and Senate races impossible to poll. Gallup has announced that it has suspended its national tracking poll for that very reason. There are other questions as well: How will the storm affect turnout next week? It will undoubtedly affect some groups and some regions more than others, but which ones? And will government’s response to the storm, either effective or ineffective, alter how people vote?
At this point in the race, political professionals are usually trying to eliminate as many variables as possible. They want no surprises, and they want data they can rely upon. This time, they’ll have none of those things. Campaigns, pundits, pollsters and voters will be going into next week’s election with a degree of uncertainty that we haven’t seen in decades, particularly in the regions most affected by the storm.
And an already considerable potential for major election-night surprises becomes even more significant.

I would be inclined to predict this is not going to affect the Democrat vote negatively all that much, unless there are procrastinators that were waiting until now to vote. Republicans tend to vote ON election day. This probably won’t affect them either, but they were going to vote reliably anyway. It’s what they do.
As far as the impact on swing voters, I would say the fact that Obama has responded very well to this crisis and emphasized just what the government can and does do when there’s a big storm will go a long way toward reinforcing his already strong LEADERSHIP. Chris Christie agrees.

Tracking polls are only as good as the sample selected. I think that Jay is correctly pointing out that we are in unknown territory here. We don’t know how many people have dumped regular phones for cell phones, and we therefore don’t know whether the sample selected is indeed reliable. History points out the problem. The tracking poll selected Dewey to trounce Truman because the sample polled consisted of people who could afford telephones at that time, and those people were overwhelmingly conservative.
We could be in for a major surprise on election night, regardless of what Nate Silver or Gallup says. And you need to keep in mind that even the 2010 exit polls were inaccurate as predictors of results.

Goldie, it’s worse than that. Romney is expanding his false ad about Jeep closing an American factory to manufacture in China. When the GOP said they were not going to let fact checking stand in the way, they meant it. Does not say much for the credibility or integrity of Romney but all but the conned knew that. All that matters to them is Anybody But Obama no matter how lacking they are in all the things that they falsely claim Obama does not have.

I wonder if some of the hardest hit states would consider postponing their official election day. Although I cannot think of a time that has happened, states do have procedures for doing so in extreme cases which this could qualify. Just because the storm has passed, it is not all back to normal the next day. I can only imagine the chaos of a few states delaying election day would only be surpassed by the damages caused by Sandy.

There will be no surprises for Republicans. Democrats will claim to be surprised but the polls show the race is over. Romney will win by a large margin, probably as many by 53% to 46%. Republicans will not only retain control of the house but will gain a few seats. They will gain control of the Senate although by a narrow margin and will add to their already majority of State Governorships. I also expect the Republicans will gain control of several new state legislatures adding to their already commanding lead in this important category. The people are fed up with the “progressive” policies which have bankrupted nearly every state and the entire nation. Hope and change is in the air.

As part of their decision in 2000 the Supreme Court said that election day was set by the constitution and could not be changed by the state. Florida could not have a revote, etc. on a later day.
Don’t think they would let Congress change or delay the vote either.

Coming hot on the heels of speculation that some Jeep production may be moved to China comes a bombshell from a Bloomberg report. Fiat is now considering moving Chrysler and Jeep production to Italy.
According to the piece, “To counter the severe slump in European sales, (Fiat CEO Sergio) Marchionne is considering building Chrysler models in Italy, including Jeeps, for export to North America. The Italian government is evaluating tax rebates on export goods to help Fiat. Marchionne may announce details of his plan as soon as Oct. 30, the people said.”
So, let’s be real clear here, we are talking about vehicles that will be built in Italy and exported to America. The evidence is clear that Fiat is looking at ways to move production of vehicles from the US to elsewhere, whether it be China or Italy, costing American jobs. This is becoming indisputable, despite outcries from certain parties to the contrary.
I know you Democrats feel much better knowing the jobs will go to Italy.

There is probably not a precedent here but I could see where legal challenges would be made to the validity of the election if enough people who want to vote are unable to vote through no fault of their own. Government offices are closed so they cannot get absentee ballots and they have been evacuated and cannot return to their homes and the voting place has been rendered unusable. How is somebody going to be able to exercise their constitutional right to vote? Oh I remember now, I hear you can vote by phone. Nevermind.

I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position: Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China.
North American production is critical to achieving our goal of selling 800,000 Jeep vehicles by 2014. In fact, U.S. production of our Jeep models has nearly tripled (it is expected to be up 185%) since 2009 in order to keep up with global demand.
We also are investing to improve and expand our entire U.S. operations, including our Jeep facilities. The numbers tell the story:
• We will invest more than $1.7 billion to develop and produce the next generation Jeep SUV, the successor of the Jeep Liberty — including $500 million directly to tool and expand our Toledo Assembly Complex and will be adding about 1,100 jobs on a second shift by 2013.
• At our Jefferson North Assembly Plant, where we build the Jeep Grand Cherokee, we have created 2,000 jobs since June 2009 and have invested more than $1.8 billion.
• In Belvidere, where we build two Jeep models, we have added two shifts since 2009 resulting in an additional 2,600 jobs.
With the increase in demand for our vehicles, especially Jeep branded vehicles, we have added more than 11,200 U.S. jobs since 2009. Plants producing Jeep branded vehicles alone have seen the number of people invested in the success of the Jeep brand grow to more than 9,300 hourly jobs from 4,700. This will increase by an additional 1,100 as the Liberty successor, which will be produced in Toledo, is introduced for global distribution in the second quarter of 2013.
Together, we are working to establish a global enterprise and previously announced our intent to return Jeep production to China, the world’s largest auto market, in order to satisfy local market demand, which would not otherwise be accessible. Chrysler Group is interested in expanding the customer base for our award-winning Jeep vehicles, which can only be done by establishing local production. This will ultimately help bolster the Jeep brand, and solidify the resilience of U.S. jobs.
Jeep is one of our truly global brands with uniquely American roots. This will never change. So much so that we committed that the iconic Wrangler nameplate, currently produced in our Toledo, Ohio plant, will never see full production outside the United States.
Jeep assembly lines will remain in operation in the United States and will constitute the backbone of the brand.
It is inaccurate to suggest anything different.

Democrats tend to vote early so many, many of them have already voted. I always vote absentee so my ballot went in several weeks ago.
Based on the storm’s path I don’t see any states that can have an actual impact on the presidential election outcome being much affected except for Pennsylvania.

@Oscar…..based on the news reports I haven’t heard much about the areas south of say Philadelphia. There obviously was damage along the Virginia coastline but don’t know how much actual residual damage there may be inland.
I have seen nothing about damage inland further north such as N.H. They may be taking a soaking and high winds but they don’t have the storm surge to deal with.

“We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids,” Romney continued, when asked specifically about disaster relief. “It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we’ll all be dead and gone before it’s paid off. It makes no sense at all.”

Now, you and I both know the Secretary of Defense cannot make a decision to send or not send our troops into a foregin country. That order can only come from the president. So the cowardly order to stand down came from Obama. It cannot come from another person. But, the the excuse, the lie came from Panetta. An honest man would have refused the presidents order and told the president he would have to make it himself.

The most affected areas, NY, CT, NJ, RI, are all solidly blue states. There will possibly be fewer people voting, but Obama should win these states easily, just as was predicted pre storm.
That does nothing to take away from the fact that most people are fed up with the economy, and are smart enough to know that things will not change for the better with 4 more years of Obama. The trend is clear, Romney wins the popular vote by 5%, or more, and the EC with 300.

Let me refresh your memory. The Romney comments were in aanswer to a specifc question about the toronado damge in Joplin. Mo. That tornado as powerfil as it was for the most part damaged homes and busineses which are covered by home owners or business insurance. Damage to power lines, telephones etc. are handled by utility companies. There was little infrstructure damage. So the comments were directed at the insane notion that the todays tax payers of the United States should borrow money from China mortgaging our children’s future to pay back the borrowed money because a few present day idiots don’t have enough foresight to plan for their own emergencies. Romney never said the state government first then the federal government shouldn’t try to help with repairing infrstructure. I would be in favor of You, Me and everyone, no exception for poverty, reach in our own pockets to pay for disasters as they occur and leave our children alone. If we wnat to spend money fine lets increase our taxes. Everyones taxes increased on a pay as we go, not put it off on someone else If we don’t want to pay, then don’t ask to play.

Gallup has had Romney up 51-46 for a while. Most other polls have all been trending towards Romney. Only Bookman and his blind cronies can talk “surprise” or blame Sandy.
