Fox New anchors, right-wing websites and talk-radio hosts around the country are ginning up a wave of mass hysteria about the decision by the Obama administration not to attempt a military rescue of Ambassador Chris Stevens in Libya. (Glenn Beck is even telling listeners that the treason is more widespread, and that Stevens was acting as a gunrunner for al Qaida in Libya and Syria. I kid you not.)
Obama’s crime is said to be so heinous that mere impeachment for refusing to intervene would be insufficient. If you Google the words “Benghazi” and “traitor,” you get some 518,000 hits, almost all of which cast President Obama as that traitor. The criticism extends as well to the mainstream media, which as my email informs me, is being accused of covering up a scandal of such dimensions that it would supposedly dwarf Watergate.
But I have a question.
According to NBC News, Mitt Romney hasn’t mentioned Libya in his campaign appearances around the country since Oct. 12, which is more than two weeks ago. Now why do you think that is?
Option one: Mitt has joined the mainstream media as part of the pro-Obama conspiracy of silence to protect the president.
Option two. Romney’s military and foreign affairs advisers have told him that not even a minimally responsible case can be made that Obama should have intervened militarily at Benghazi, and that Romney would deeply embarrass himself by suggesting such a step.
Let’s be clear: There is no indication — none — that U.S military officials advised the president or anyone in the administration that a rescue operation was possible, and that the administration ignored that offer. The evidence is entirely to the contrary.
As Defense Secretary Leon Panetta explained, “(The) basic principle is that you don’t deploy forces into harm’s way without knowing what’s going on; without having some real-time information about what’s taking place. And as a result of not having that kind of information, the commander who was on the ground in that area, Gen. Ham, Gen. Dempsey and I felt very strongly that we could not put forces at risk in that situation.”
That would be Gen. Carter Ham, the head of U.S. Africa Command, and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. They are men of training and experience; they know where our military assets are located; they know their capabilities, and they know the difficulties involved in inserting and extracting an armed force into an uncertain situation in another country.
It is of course frustrating and heartbreaking to learn that CIA officers stationed near the Benghazi consulate had asked three times for military assistance and that those requests had been denied. But that is real life. This is not a Hollywood movie.
Here’s how Fox News reported the news above:
The most provocative piece of that report is the claim that a Special Forces team stationed at an air base in Signonella, Italy, two hours from Benghazi, was ready to intervene but orders were never given. But here’s how such mass hysteria gets fed by partial information, in both senses of the word “partial”. As it turned out, the Special Forces team in question was not based in Sigonella but had to be assembled and transported there from elsewhere in Europe.
“U.S. officials say (the team) did not arrive in Sicily until after the attack was over,” CBS reports. “Even if the team had been ready in time, confusion about what was happening on the ground in Benghazi — and State Department concerns about violating Libyan sovereignty — made a military rescue mission impractical, the officials say.”
Arguing against mass and willful hysteria using facts, logic and expert professional opinion is a losing battle, of course. It doesn’t matter that our top military people believed a rescue effort would be impractical and would probably end in the loss of even more American lives. What matters is that talk-show hosts and others can stir up millions of Americans raised on Rambo movies to believe that their leaders could have helped to rescue a well-respected U.S. diplomat and his team, but simply decided it wasn’t worth the effort. Because the president is a traitor.
That makes no sense. It is such a ridiculous notion that in most eras it would never even be broached in public debate. But this is an era in which many are predisposed to believe the most ridiculous things if it justifies their hatred of Obama, and a time in which when emotions are heightened by a hard-fought presidential campaign. So nonsense reigns.

Well, given that appropriations bills begin in the House, why didn’t the GOP controlled House simply give him spending bills to cut those deficits in half just as he said he would? Is it because of the fact that even the GOP numpties understand that cutting spending would cripple our economy?

Hysteria? Jay, you are not an individual who’s grounded in reality. Now that we are getting information about the actual events that took place, it is inconceivable that the administration would have sent Susan Rice out and other surrogates to try to deceive us into believing that this was spawned by a protest. It may soothe your insecurities to have like-minded folks on this board tell you how talented you are and pat you on the back no matter how false your drivel gets, but it doesn’t change reality. The reality is this: the adminstration screwed up, then panic set in, and now there’s no where to hide. Four people died needlessly and you have the gall to label those trying to find answers as hysterical. Maybe you’re the one with balls the size of cue balls.

Why didn’t Jack Cousteau hand feed great white sharks near Seal Island in South Africa?
As far as I can tell, the president did try to work with Congress as a whole to fix things. What he got in return was outright stonewalling by the GOP. While you and others try to blame the president for the failure of Congress to do anything worthwhile, people like me laugh. People like me, who actually know how the Constitution set up our government, realize that the president doesn’t have a friggin’ thing to do with Congress other than to spew words.
Legislation from Congress has to come from Congress, has to be written by Congress, and has to pass votes by Congress before the president can do anything to them. A Republican healthcare bill passed without a single Republican vote. The supply side idea of tax cuts to stimulate the economy was used in the stimulus AND with the payroll tax cut. Free trade agreements were signed with three different countries by the president. Every bill that passed Congress has been signed into law by the president. So you tell me how you’ve come to the conclusion that the president has not worked with the GOP in Congress?

My problem with the whole thing Jay is that we have the best military on the planet. It’s inexcusable that a rescue mission would not be feasable. I don’t watch opinion news programs because they are as worthless as two party presidential debates where any of us could answer for the “candidates”.
It’s inexcusable that our people, military and civilian diplomats would be in such danger. I’m not blaming it politically on Obama or Panetta or anyone personally. Obviously they didn’t want this to happen, but it’s inexcusable that any US Embassy on this planet, but especially those in war torn areas would not have such sufficient defense meaures that an attack on it or the people within it’s sphere of protection would be suicide.
I would hope personally that whomever is leading the state department going forward, would absolutely never let this happen again.

Why are people less upset that Cheney and Bush would not go before the 9/11 Commission without the other being in the room and without being under oath? We should never discount human life but there were 3000+ people killed on 9/11 and the president and vice president didn’t want to be sworn to tell the truth on record. Where’s the outrage? From Thomas Sowell:
The belated release of State Department e-mails shows that the Obama administration knew, while the attack on the American consulate was still underway, that it was a coordinated, armed terrorist attack. They were getting reports from those inside the consulate who were under attack, as well as surveillance pictures from a camera on an American drone overhead.
About an hour before the attack, the scene outside was calm enough for the American ambassador to accompany a Turkish official to the gates of the consulate to say goodbye. This could hardly have happened if there were protesting mobs there.
Why then did both President Obama and U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice keep repeating the story that this was a spontaneous protest riot against an anti-Islamic video in America?
The White House knew the facts — but they knew that the voting public did not. And it mattered hugely whether the facts became known to the public before or after the election. What the White House needed was a process of “cooling out” the voters, keeping them distracted or in uncertainty as long as possible.
Not only did the Obama administration keep repeating the false story about an anti-Islamic video being the cause of a riot that turned violent, the man who produced that video was tracked down and arrested, creating a media distraction.
All this kept the video story front and center, with the actions and inactions of the Obama administration kept in the background.
The White House had to know that it was only a matter of time before the truth would come out. But time was what mattered, with an election close at hand. The longer they could stretch out the period of distraction and uncertainty — “cooling out” the voters — the better. Once the confidence man in the White House was reelected, it would be politically irrelevant what facts came out.
As the Obama administration’s video story began to slowly unravel, their earlier misstatements were blamed on “the fog of war” that initially obscures many events. But there was no such “fog of war” in this case. The Obama administration knew what was happening while it was happening.
They didn’t know all the details — and we may never know all the details — but they knew enough to know that this was no protest demonstration that got out of hand.
From the time it took office, the Obama administration has sought to suppress the very concept of a “war on terror” or the terrorists’ war on us. The painful farce of calling the Fort Hood murders “workplace violence,” instead of a terrorist attack in our midst, shows how far the Obama administration would go to downplay the dangers of Islamic extremist terrorism.

Here is a question I have. The administration continues to claim that they gave out the best information they had at the time, which was that the attack was due to reaction over an american made film. Then exactly where did that information come from. There is no answer to that question. All of the information that has been found or put out by either side does not suggest that they had any information linking the attacks to the film. Why can’t the administration explain where they received the information linking the attacks to the film. If they would explain that it would clear a lot of this up. My guess is that they have a very poor source and they know that that would only lead to further problems. To me this is the start of the problems the administration has. The American people have a lack of trust with the current aministration as they should.

Nope. The obstructionism has been steadily escalating since the 1980’s. We’re just witnessing a continued escalation of the confirmation skirmishes, legislative battles, and other crap. Obama’s, Boehner’, Cantor’s, Pelosi’s, Reid’s, nor McConnell’s actions in the 2000’s have anything to do with it other than simply adding fuel to the already raging fire.

Republicans are politicizing this entire Benghazi event, but they were very silent when men and women were being killed by the thousands in Iraq. Death in Iraq is ok…death in Benghazi not ok.

Tom Price was given one simple job–say “I Object” to everything that President Obama wanted–and Tom could not even handle that. Blame Tom Price for his failure to say “I Object” in a sufficiently whiny voice often enough to block passage of ACA. That one is on Tom Price’s shoulders. He’s a failure.

tc the answer to your question lies in reading. The information obtained from a lawyer who was in the area said that as the terrorists were closing off the streets to the embassy he saw them instructing groups of students to lead the advance on the gates shouting their revulsion to the video. It was to distract from their intention to then attack with heavy weapons-it was felt the security staff would not attack the students and would be distracted by their demonstration…thus the intitial confusion.

Sure starting to sound like “Black Hawk Down” to me, There was gunships within an hour that could have destroyed the terrorist.. But the main question is this, Why on the eve of the aniversary of 9/11 was there not a much stronger detachment of security on at these locations.. When you project weaknes then you get attacked..

Why doesn’t Trump join in the fray? Where is the potted plant with the flip flopping empty hair? I’d say he’s gone full Stalin and is executing every single member of his staff who should have known he was stepping in a big pile of poo. Trump is a queer deer. He once sang, “Green Acres” on television. It was a disaster, but it only made you love him more. Remember when he tore into Rosie O’donnell when she mimed his hair flip flop on the View? He overkilled her. You can’t attack an comic like that. The little old ladies in Peoria won’t understand. But, then he created one of the most entertaining shows ever. If he said, “you’re fired” to a wannabe loser that we hated, boy did we cheer!!!! Television doesn’t get any better than that.
But Trump proves that luck is a fickle angel. how unlucky it was that he wasn’t saved from that big reveal. How to rehab? If he gives five million to the poor kids in chicago, it might begin the rehab. Naw. He’s is never to command respect again. Every single new yorker who meets Trump can out debate trump. Even the homeless. Debating Trump is like debating an empty hair. Would you listen to Trumps braying ever again? After the Veep debate, Eric Erickson said that Biden acted so poorly that Mary could ride him into Bethlehem. He should have saved that one.

After the illegal invasion of Iraq, justified through bald faced lies, Halliburton was given exclusives to contracts for the rebuilding of that country. In carrying out these contracts Halliburton stole billions, some consisting of pallets stacked 6 feet high with hundred dollar bills just disappearing. The fraud and abuse was blatant to the extreme.
Appearing before a Congressional Committee in 2004, Cheney was asked by Senator Patrick Leahy to produce the documentation showing where the missing billions in Iraq had gone to. Cheney told Leahy “Go f$%k yourself” and hence telling the American people the same thing as it was our money that was stolen.

Thanks Mitt!
The fatal meningitis epidemic sweeping the United States can now be traced to the failure of then-Gov. Mitt Romney to adequately regulate the Massachusetts pharmaceutical company that is being blamed for the deaths.
At least 344 people in 18 states have been infected by the growing public health crisis and 25 have died so far.
But the epidemic may also play a role in the presidential campaign, now that state records reveal that a Massachusetts regulatory agency found that the New England Compounding Co., the pharmaceutical company tied to the epidemic, repeatedly failed to meet accepted standards in 2004 — but a reprimand was withdrawn by the Romney administration in apparent deference to the company’s business interests.

Did Bush know about 9/11 prior to the attack? Did Bush know there were no WMD in Iraq prior to the invasion?
Your answer to these two will tell you whether you can look at the Benghazi incident with any sense of objectivity….
As a final consideration. . . if the parties were reversed (especially if Bush were still President), would your questions/explanations be the same?

“Way to go Brownie” or “Christie told reporters yesterday that he’d spoken to Obama, “and he told me that if, at any point over the next 48 hours, I was not getting something from the federal government that I should call him directly at the White House and that he was going to be there. And I should just not worry about dealing with anybody else, call him. So I appreciate that call from the president. It was very proactive. And I appreciate that type of leadership.”
But I am sure that the clown car of posters who are posting silly lies about “Obama lied, people died” fail to comprehend real leadership skills from our President.

Jay- your continuing idiocy is very entertaining. The issue clearly was not whether PrezBO should do a rescue mission but that PrezBO lied to the American people about the entire event and attempted to cover up the fact that the embassy had previously requested additional security. The fact that someone died in this mess does not bother you??!?!?!? You are defending PrezBO by attempting to change the subject. Get real.
