Colin Powell endorses Obama; Sununu, McCain go nuts

Obama Powell

Yesterday, Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama for president, explaining that he believes the incumbent has done a good job on the economy given the situation he was handed. As a former secretary of state and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell also took serious issue with the foreign policy stances of Obama’s opponent, Mitt Romney, saying that ” I’m not quite sure which Governor Romney we would be getting with respect to foreign policy”:

“One day he has a certain strong view about staying in Afghanistan, but then on Monday night he agrees with the withdrawal. Same thing in Iraq. On almost every issue that was discussed on Monday night, Governor Romney agreed with the President with some nuances. But this is quite a different set of foreign policy views than he had earlier in the campaign. And my concern, which I’ve expressed previously in a public way, is that sometimes I don’t sense that he has thought through these issues as thoroughly as he should have, and he gets advice from his campaign staff that he then has to adjust to modify as he goes along.

INTERVIEWER: Are you concerned about the people that are advising Governor Romney?

POWELL: I think there’s some very, very strong neo-conservative views that are presented by the Governor that I have some trouble with. There are other issues as well, not just the economy and foreign policy. I’m more comfortable with President Obama and his administration when it comes to issues like what are we going to do about climate, what are we going to do about immigration? What are we going to do about education? Lots of things like that. I do not want to see the new Obamacare plan thrown off the table. It has issues, you have to fix some things in that plan. But what I see when I look at that plan is 30 million of our fellow citizens will now be covered by insurance. And I think that’s good. We’re one of the few nations in the world, with our size, population and wealth, that does not have universal health care.”

To which John Sununu, top surrogate for Mitt Romney replied:

“When you take a look at Colin Powell, you have to look at whether that’s an endorsement based on issues or he’s got a slightly different reason for endorsing President Obama. I think when you have somebody of your own race that you’re proud of being president of the United States, I applaud Colin for standing with him.”

Earlier in the day, Sen. John McCain lashed out at Powell as well.

“I think one of the sad aspects of his career is going to the United Nations Security Council and telling them things about Iraq that were absolutely false,” McCain said, going on to tell Powell that “you disappoint us and you have harmed your legacy even further by defending what has clearly been the most feckless foreign policy in my lifetime.”

UPDATE: Just in case anybody thought McCain merely had a bad moment, he repeated his childish little sniping today:

“Colin Powell, interestingly enough, said that Obama got us out of Iraq,” McCain said, standing outside of an American Legion hall. “But it was Colin Powell, with his testimony before the U.N. Security Council, that got us into Iraq.”

Sununu’s statement, which he later tried to back down, is deeply troubling. No one alive today possesses Powell’s level of experience at the highest levels of military and foreign policy, yet Sununu attempts to reduce him to a one-dimensional cartoon character motivated solely by racial affinity.

But personally, as I indicated yesterday in comments, McCain’s statement is more unforgivable. For whatever reason, Powell did indeed mislead the United Nations in his presentation regarding Iraq’s alleged possession of weapons of mass destruction, and he has acknowledged that as a blot on his record. But McCain was selling the WMD angle every bit as hard if not harder than Powell. Nobody in Congress was lobbying harder for an invasion of Iraq. Here is McCain in 2002:

Given that record, McCain’s swipe at Powell for his UN presentation comes off as extremely petty, utterly without dignity or integrity. It reveals the smallness of the man who uttered it. All in all, what McCain and Sununu have said tells us much more about their own character than it does about Powell.

More info out today about Benghazi. Getting worse for the liar-in-chief. He will not escape this one. 4 Americans dead, and Obama is busy out trying to get re-elected instead of doing the job he was elected to do. If, and that is a HUGE if, he is re-elected, how long will he stay in office? There is blood in the water, and the media that has been so kind to him for 4 years are starting to circle. Man…this is getting better and better every day. I like to watch Obama, his minions, and his supporters squirm.

What a shame. Colin Powell, a once relevant and respected voice in politics, has become a blind fool. We know exactly what we will get with another 4 years of Obama; self-serving, arrogant, and egotistical rhetoric. Obama is a campaigner in chief, not a leader. He could care less about this country’s future. He only cares about his own. It was obvious from his first day in office that Obama was in over his head and lacked any understanding of how to lead this country. Obama has failed miserably. Let’s try somebody else!

yet another hypocrital story by Jay,

in Jays world–where the libs live, the big bad wolves are all republicans. The liars are never democrats and all known bias exsist on the right.

Odd how you preach love and tolerence on the left yet you never practice it toward those who differ in thought from you. 98 % of African Americans vote for obama and its just a coencedence, 52% of white America voted for Obama yet now if they dont they are all racist, how can that truly be the case ? especially when the 98% of the blacks are not. you liberals have to be the most double standard people on the face of the planet.

must be nice to have the perfect party. no racist no liars and nothing bad.

Unfortunately for you, this will not be forgotten. The MSM is in panic mode right now trying to cover this up and hope that no one sees this. Too late, and the polls are proving me correct. I know treason is a big word for most libs. Here is the definition;

1. the offense of acting to overthrow one’s government or to harm or kill its sovereign.

2. a violation of allegiance to one’s sovereign or to one’s state.

3. the betrayal of a trust or confidence; breach of faith; treachery.

I think he is guilty of definition #2 and especially #3.

The GOP continues to reveal its true nature, and we should be thankful for that in the days leading up to the election so we can all make an informed decision at the ballot box. Whether it’s comments on “legitimate rape” or God’s will that a woman was raped, Paul Ryan’s grossly misleading if not outright lies about President Obama, Mitt Romney’s flip flops and international gaffs or now attacks on General Powell, who is a very honorable man, we see the ugliness that many of us suspected but could not confirm. To reduce General Powell to a person who endorses candidates on the basis of their race is an insult to Powell and an indictment of the mentality of those who lead the GOP. Senator McCain always struck me as a heroic, patriotic figure, but his attack on Powell after his own complicity in the Weapons of Mass Destruction fiasco and his choice of an ignorant and self serving fool to be his running mate makes me question whether he was ever the man I thought he was. “Feckless” foreign policy? Could he recognize it if he saw it? This is the man who wanted to place Gov. Palin first in line to succeed to the presidency! Can someone with such obviously flawed judgment be counted on to comment on a matter of such importance? I fault President Obama for not having a plan for the next four years, and from what I have read he can be arrogant to the point of not listening to either his supporters or those who represent the GOP’s leadership. Hubris is contagious and it appears the virus has consumed “leaders” of both parties in Washington even more than it did in decades past. Where are the men and women who can agree to disagree in a civil way? Are those in leadership positions within the GOP and Democratic Party so convinced of their own superiority that it must always be “my way or the highway?” Have we forgotten how much might be gained by listening to those who see things differently than we do, regardless of party? I respect General Powell for trying to work within the Republican Party and Democratic Party and saying what he thinks in an honest and fearless way. I feel sure he was not surprised by the pettiness of Sununu and the duplicity of McCain given his experience assisting both gentlemen, but surely he must have been disappointed. I think the Governor and the Senator should be diminished in our sight for their actions and their statements, and I think President Obama should be held accountable for his lack of a plan for the next four years. There’s no excuse for that; it implies he thinks we non-academics can’t think critically or see the emptiness behind his powerful rhetoric. I do agree with General Powell that the President has done something about health care, a subject the GOP would never touch, and while Obamacare can be improved it is a step in the direction of saving all of us money by providing insurance for those who could not be covered earlier. I also believe he has restored respect for America among leaders throughout the world, rebuilding what President Bush destroyed through his “feckless” foreign policy. I also credit the President with doing what he could to rebuild our economy after his incompetent predecessor curried favor with the elite, his “base,” by cutting taxes for the wealthy and ultimately transferring more and more of the tax burden onto the middle class. The current president inherited a mess on virtually all fronts and now the people who brought us eight years of GWB and who would in a self righteous frenzy reduce women to vessels who cannot be trusted with their own bodies and who would further widen the gap between the haves and have nots (read 49 percent) want to get their country back. If they can all fit into Crawford, Texas and limit their influence to the confines of Bush Country, I am all for it. Perhaps that would contain at least one strain of the hubris virus that has obviously infected the Republican Party. I’m not sure where those carrying the Democratic strain need to go, but I don’t want it in my neighborhood.

The last election he endorsed Obama, as did MANY MANY people of all races, backgrounds. Heck, when he won I was OK with it, as he was charming, articulate, & seemingly had a plan for the betterment of this country…

However, to vote for the worse Prez since, (He!! he’s worse than Jimmy Carter!) before anyone in my lifetime (Eisenhower) and be a man that knows the facts. He’s doing so on skin color alone.. Oh but OBummer is not even a full Black man… He’s a half breed…

Fox News has learned from sources who were on the ground in Benghazi that an urgent request from the CIA annex for military back-up during the attack on the U.S. consulate and subsequent attack several hours later on the annex itself was denied by the CIA chain of command — who also told the CIA operators twice to “stand down” rather than help the ambassador’s team when shots were heard at approximately 9:40 p.m. in Benghazi on Sept. 11.

One, their was a predator with live intelligence feeds on the scene and email trails indicating a terrorist attack. Now, today we have sources on the ground stating someone(CIA?), we dont know telling our soldiers to stand down. Someone made that order, and because committing our military into Libya could violate their territory, only the President could make this decision. In addition, we know four days later when the body bags came home, that Clinton blamed the video in a ceremony for the deaths. Now, we know she said the same thing to the father of one of our dead. And, then for fourteen days all we heard was video, video video. I guess you just think we are all stupid to not think that this was all political.

Regarding Colin Powell, I could care less who he supports in this election. I lost all respect for this man who stood by during the Valarie Plame incident knowing full well his confidant the assistant secretary of state was the one who leaked the information. Months and months went by in an expensive federal investigation and the man says nothing. It’s a crime of the highest order in my opinion, and resulted in a man going to jail. I repeat Colin Powell knew the truth and said nothing. I don’t care what your politics are this is a disgrace. He is as dishonorable as they come…..Oh, but you get back to being balanced Jay.

An ideological assault from the right has started to undermine the vital health reform law passed in 2010. Those forces are eroding women’s access to health care, and their right to control their lives. Nearly 50 years after passage of the Civil Rights Act, all Americans’ rights are cheapened by the right wing’s determination to deny marriage benefits to a selected group of us. Astonishingly, even the very right to vote is being challenged.”

Any one who doesn’t think that race didn’t have a major part of Obama being elected is living in LALA Land. So very many blacks who bragged that they had never, ever voted for President before, were very clear is stating that they were proud and honored to be voting for one of their own. I heard it in interviews time after time. They didn’t have a clue as to the Democratic platform, they didn’t know Obama’s views but they were going to vote for A Black man.!!!! So, this race remark by Sunumu is nothing new, it’s been going on since Obama first declared his candidacy for the 2008 election. Remember? Only those who are concerned that Obama won’t be re-elected are ready, willing and able to bring this up.

More people of color are voting early now. A very good friend who is black is so disappointed with all the chatter he is getting from friends of color. He said that he was amazed that people were voting purely based on Zobama is black. NO real understanding of what he stands for. He believes that they will be in further decline economically if Obama wins.
