Yesterday, Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama for president, explaining that he believes the incumbent has done a good job on the economy given the situation he was handed. As a former secretary of state and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell also took serious issue with the foreign policy stances of Obama’s opponent, Mitt Romney, saying that ” I’m not quite sure which Governor Romney we would be getting with respect to foreign policy”:
“One day he has a certain strong view about staying in Afghanistan, but then on Monday night he agrees with the withdrawal. Same thing in Iraq. On almost every issue that was discussed on Monday night, Governor Romney agreed with the President with some nuances. But this is quite a different set of foreign policy views than he had earlier in the campaign. And my concern, which I’ve expressed previously in a public way, is that sometimes I don’t sense that he has thought through these issues as thoroughly as he should have, and he gets advice from his campaign staff that he then has to adjust to modify as he goes along.
INTERVIEWER: Are you concerned about the people that are advising Governor Romney?
POWELL: I think there’s some very, very strong neo-conservative views that are presented by the Governor that I have some trouble with. There are other issues as well, not just the economy and foreign policy. I’m more comfortable with President Obama and his administration when it comes to issues like what are we going to do about climate, what are we going to do about immigration? What are we going to do about education? Lots of things like that. I do not want to see the new Obamacare plan thrown off the table. It has issues, you have to fix some things in that plan. But what I see when I look at that plan is 30 million of our fellow citizens will now be covered by insurance. And I think that’s good. We’re one of the few nations in the world, with our size, population and wealth, that does not have universal health care.”
To which John Sununu, top surrogate for Mitt Romney replied:
“When you take a look at Colin Powell, you have to look at whether that’s an endorsement based on issues or he’s got a slightly different reason for endorsing President Obama. I think when you have somebody of your own race that you’re proud of being president of the United States, I applaud Colin for standing with him.”
Earlier in the day, Sen. John McCain lashed out at Powell as well.
“I think one of the sad aspects of his career is going to the United Nations Security Council and telling them things about Iraq that were absolutely false,” McCain said, going on to tell Powell that “you disappoint us and you have harmed your legacy even further by defending what has clearly been the most feckless foreign policy in my lifetime.”
UPDATE: Just in case anybody thought McCain merely had a bad moment, he repeated his childish little sniping today:
“Colin Powell, interestingly enough, said that Obama got us out of Iraq,” McCain said, standing outside of an American Legion hall. “But it was Colin Powell, with his testimony before the U.N. Security Council, that got us into Iraq.”
Sununu’s statement, which he later tried to back down, is deeply troubling. No one alive today possesses Powell’s level of experience at the highest levels of military and foreign policy, yet Sununu attempts to reduce him to a one-dimensional cartoon character motivated solely by racial affinity.
But personally, as I indicated yesterday in comments, McCain’s statement is more unforgivable. For whatever reason, Powell did indeed mislead the United Nations in his presentation regarding Iraq’s alleged possession of weapons of mass destruction, and he has acknowledged that as a blot on his record. But McCain was selling the WMD angle every bit as hard if not harder than Powell. Nobody in Congress was lobbying harder for an invasion of Iraq. Here is McCain in 2002:
Given that record, McCain’s swipe at Powell for his UN presentation comes off as extremely petty, utterly without dignity or integrity. It reveals the smallness of the man who uttered it. All in all, what McCain and Sununu have said tells us much more about their own character than it does about Powell.

The Benghazi scandal grows. The administration lies are ever bigger and more widening. It is now known the “Safe House” we have heard so much about only one mile away from our consuate in Benghazi was aware of the attack in real time and contacted their superiors in Washington and requested they be given permission to defend the Consulate. They were denied permission three times. WHY!!! There were among those the two Navy Seals who disobeyed orders and went to the Consulate where they were killed. Leon Pannetta yesterday claimed the military could not respond becasue it was too dangerous and they did not know what was going on. Now that is a bald face lie. Not only was the event being telecast live to the Pentagon, the White House and State Department, in addition to the live telephone call between the consulate personnel and people in Washington D.C. but they also had two hihly trained Navy Seals on the ground to inform them in detail what was going on. The administration lies continued to the point of ignorantly claiming we can’t send help because it is TOO DANGEROUS!!!! Let that sink in……our military is for the purpose of putting itself in DANGEROUS places to protect this country, its assets and its people. If the military is soooo afraid of danger it will not protect and american embassy which is our country then everyone of those SOBs should be immediately fired including SECDEF Panetta. My goodness. What are we doing in Afghanistan if we are too timid to fight in Libya? It appears the military under the leadership of the apologist Barack Hussein Obama has been reduced to the equivalent of the Welcome Wagon. The more Jay and his media liberal buddies try to hide the truth about the events in Libya the bigger the scandal grows. The truth cannot be stopped. While the white house twiddled their thumbs, while the state departent twiddled their thumbs, while our military who are swaorn to defend us twiddled their thumbs, our people were being slaughtered by a handful of muslim extremeists. Then the administartion swiftly set out to cover its incompence with the help of a traitorous media by spreading lies it knew weren’t true from its own ears and eyes. This country has court martialed people for less.

Thulsa, Jay answered your question several pages ago…
“But are you going to sit there with a straight face and say that with surety that you absolutely never made comments or posted links about Powell misrepresenting the U.S. on WMDs before the U.N.? Really???
I never made any such claim, Thulsa. I’m certain that I did write about it at the time.
However, I did not suggest or imply that Powell lacked honesty or character, as you earlier stated. Nor did I suggest or imply that Powell purposely misrepresented the facts, as you also stated earlier.
The truth is that you got caught red-handed making stuff up that you cannot substantiate and that are not true.

I’m inclined to agree with Marty and Thulsa about jay’s refusal to acknowledge Powell as part of the “evil” Bush administration. It’s kinda like Obama’s claim that he never apologized…word play…nothing more.
Anyhoo…”The President’s Real Goal in Iraq” puts jay in the kook realm as far as I’m concerned.
And why has the administration dismissed the option of containing and deterring Iraq, as we had the Soviet Union for 45 years? Because even if it worked, containment and deterrence would not allow the expansion of American power. Besides, they are beneath us as an empire. Rome did not stoop to containment; it conquered. And so should we.
We did try to contain ‘em with U.N. sanctions. Didn’t work. What did Powell have to say about THAT?
Colin Powell, MBA, US Secretary of State at the time of the quote, stated in a Mar. 16, 2003 interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s This Week:”We have had timelines, we have had deadlines, and we have had benchmarks. The problem is Iraq is not complying. Iraq is playing the United Nations and playing some of our friends in the permanent membership of the Security Council like a fiddle.
It’s a game and the problem is strictly on the shoulders of Saddam Hussein who is not complying with the simple instructions of 1441 and all the previous resolutions. And we cannot get ourselves confused about what the problem is. The problem is Iraqi noncompliance and non-cooperation with the inspectors and with the will of the United Nations.”
As an aside, anti-semites loved jay’s piece. Here’s some examples from the comment section:
Get to the root said: For many of us, all this was evident at the time of the murderous US Zionist sponcered inside job of planned explosive demolition of two World Trade Tower buildings. The buildings that had been previously twice denied permits to demolish through explosives. The only option was the super expensive job of removing asbesto’s first. Then only to take the buiildings down laborously piecemeal. Flying a couple of old military planes by remote control gave them the excuse to add the whole ficticious story about Bin Laden and his motley crew of suicidal hijackers getting well deserved revenge. The Bush war mongers wish for and ecuse for war was realized. End the madness; http://www.worldsocialism.org/
AND
Banat German said: If you check the biography of those listed on the right side of the article, you will find it interesting. You will know why some people say that Israel really controls America. Add in the Federal Reserve, the SEC, the CFTC, the FBI, and many other government agencies headed by those who are Jewish, and you will understand why America is a mess financially.

Well if you feel you have nothing to learn from us white devils, maybe you can learn from a black man, one of the greatest AMERICANS to have ever lived:
But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.
The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.
We cannot walk alone.

Speaking just as one gay man and not for the whole lot, I found that Frank comment highly offensive. I don’t hold the Log Cabin lot in the highest regard myself, but because they are Republicans, and not because they are Uncle Toms.
We keep saying we want the Republicans to change their ways, well, having to deal with their own open, up front and out there gays is one way to go there. A fifth column, if you will. Like I said, while I don’t hold them in the highest esteem, that gay people would not have other issues and that the GOP might reflect their stances on those issues, is to limit what it is we’re after in equality.

“Romney is no more a war monger than Obama or any other president in history…”
====================================
Gov. Romney wants to increases defense spending even though the military has not requested that increase, as he expressed in the last debate. He also spoke in the last debate about giving Iran a more definitive ultimatum regarding nuclear weapons. He has little, if any, understanding of Obama’s words of reflection to other nations regarding America’s role in the world as well as their own roles. Romney referred to those communicative words of Obama’s as “an apology” for American values. His party is one that believes in American exceptionalism based on America’s dominance in the world rather than as a world partner. I do think that Gov. Romney, based on his particular sensibilites and based on the ongoing penchant of the Republican Party toward war, would be more likely than President Obama to send young Americans to war, once again.

Considering that Colin Powell voted for Obama in 2007, it would have been a bigger story if he had endorsed Mitt Romney.
As far as the Middle East is concerned, demographics are on the side of more and more violence. Youths under the age of 24 now make up 50-65 percent of the population of the Middle East. They are young, unemployed and hungry. There was a time when the US oil interests picked the dictators over there. Those days are over. Get used to a bumpy ride.

But of course, there’s been very little substantive change in America’s “role in the world” – or more to the point, of America’s understanding of its role — since Obama took over. Hence the great disappointment among many, esp in places like the Middle East and South America where it’s been just more business as usual under Obama.

Careful there, I never said such a thing. I am for equality but discriminationg against me is not the preferred path. Using a particular group of people in constant poverty just to get their vote is simple slavery. The DNC has done a great job with that.
“I listened to log cabin republicans endorsing romney and all I heard was partisan crap that they will vote gop no matter what mitt said.”
Since the progressive/communist liberals control the DNC the conservatives have no choice to maintain America as our forefathers created. The liberals/communist want a Marxist country with a few in charge that will have everything leaving the remainder with enough (hopefully) to exist.

“Such an outcome could mean only one of two things: Either our intelligence apparatus is more incompetent than we had dreamed possible, or we were lied to on a massive scale by our own government to lure us into war.”- Jay
“or we were lied to by our own govt o a massive scale”. Colin Powell was the lead man in the speech to the U.N. on WMDs. So explain again how you didn’t suggest that Powell was dishonest?
Colin Powell pledged to the United Nations that “our conservative estimate is that Iraq today has a stockpile of between 100 and 500 tons of chemical-weapons agent.”- Jay
You sure seem to be mentioning Powell in your article questioning the W administration, honesty, and whether or not we were being “lied to on a massive scale”.
“And that better bother us. If informed self-government means anything to us, if we intend to rely on the work product of our intelligence agencies to guide future decisions, if competence and honesty at the top levels of leadership are still important, then it matters.”
You questioned the honesty of the administration including Powell right here Jay. Your own words sir. Your words.
“In that case, who cares if the sham perpetrated by our government turns out to be more of a sham than our leaders even knew?”
A sham??? So you still gonna claim that you’re not questioning the honesty of Powell or the administration which Powell was the lead man on in the question of WMDs? Your own words.

I cherish living in a Democratic country; one in which I am allowed to think and speak and publish freely. However, it makes me profoundly sad that we citizens of this democracy do not cherish – as MLK used to say – our ability and need to “agreeably disagree.” I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican, but only a soul who happened to have been born into the Negro Newborn Nursery, over fifty years ago. And one day soon, I shall leave this shell which was bequeathed to me…and when we meet on the ‘other side’ – when we have all left these shells and habits and positions and adjectives (like gay, straight, bi, liberal, conservative, Italian, Black, Polish, Democrat, Republican, Iraqi, American, etc.)- what shall we call ourselves? We are all sisters and brothers of the same Spirit. Can we sit down to the same table and respectfully and kindly beg to differ with each other, without such venom pouring from our lips and hearts…?

Sorry but this is about one thing…I am going to vote for him because he is like me as are most blacks. The white people who are voting for him still have a bad case of White Guilt. Barry is in so far over his head he cannot see daylight and was exposed as the empty chair by the debates. The Messiah wasnt and he has no clothes.

Monroe…
And as your great poet laureate put it…
“In `65 tension was running high at my high school
There was a lot of fights between the black and white
There was nothing you could do
Two cars at a light on a saturday night in the back seat there was a gun
Words were passed in a shotgun blast
Troubled times had come to my hometown
My hometown, my hometown, my hometown”

Most presidents don’t have in depth foreign policy experience but they surround themselves with capable people. That’s why this president hasn’t started any wars in his time in office.
What are the results you need? All indicators show our economy coming back. what is your reference for how long this should take?
Does the president set gas prices?

Anyone who doesn’t think Colin Powel supports President Obama because of race, I’ve got some good land in Cuba I’ll sell you. Colin Powel is a disgrace to the Republican Party and should resign and become a Democrat. As a military man, he should know what the word loyalty means. He apparently does not. He is a liar and a hypocrite!!

The standard defense of Romney’s lying from the right is that Obama is a liar, too. I wish that cured something, I got cancer and then you say well I got cancer too, and that had some positive effect on my cancer, it doesn’t. The only thing you need to concern yourself with is that you are a liar, me lying or not has nothing to do with your character.
Obama miscalculated the stubbornness of the right. Unlike Romney who personally vetoes everything that comes out of his own mouth when he finds it does get him where he wants to go, Obama has been stopped by the right not by himself. Obama hasn’t made his whole political career about shutting out the right or taken a pledge to stiffen his flexible incase he wakes up one day feeling a sudden case of common sense.
Obama was handicapped by having to move into Bush’s and his cronies’ car right before they dove out and it was heading over a cliff. Now as he is trying to climb back up that cliff they are on top throwing rocks at him and anything else they can find and complaining because he can’t climb any faster. And then they claim they have not done any of this and Obama bloody head came from another source and he is a liar. And he being a liar somehow makes you being a liar not matter.

It is amazing how the progressive/communist liberals use those words bigotry, hate, suppression in every speech but they own the democratic slave plantation.

Absolutely Powell endorses Obama because of race. Just like Al, Jessie, Oprah…or do you believe they all voted for Obama in 2004 because Obama had a legacy of experience in foreign affairs, economics, leadership ability? Or keeping his word? Of course not. It’s still about race but possibly more from the black side than the white. And I’m an fifth generation Georgian and a third generation Atlantan black. What I really want to know is today’s new Libyan news is coming out and showing that the White House was following right along and denying the help the deceased Navy Seals were requesting, Wonder what the next WH story will be? Or does anyone in Atlanta care?

I would like to see the national unemployment rate at 6% for a start. I think a President should be able to make differences within 4 years such as President Reagan did after Carter. I would like to see our foreign interests protected. The last time a US Ambassador was killed was under Carter. Interesting the similarities between Carter & Obama. Hopefully, we will see the rise of America under Romney like we did under Reagan. I guess you have to have a Obama/Carter to have a Reagan/ Romney.

Now, for all you racists screaming racism, ponder this. Prior to Obama, 100% of blacks have voted for all white candidates. Care to explain why?

“Fox News has learned from sources who were on the ground in Benghazi that an urgent request from the CIA annex for military back-up during the attack on the U.S. consulate and subsequent attack several hours later on the annex itself was denied by the CIA chain of command — who also told the CIA operators twice to “stand down” rather than help the ambassador’s team when shots were heard at approximately 9:40 p.m. in Benghazi on Sept. 11.”

Would someone please define racism? I having a hard time figuring out if Sununu’s statement was racist, or if the people who vote for the President are racists, or if the people who vote for Romney are racists.
Is it racist to say that a black man voted for a black man because of racial pride? Is it racist to say a black person is racist to vote for the President because the President is black? Is it racist to be black and vote for a black person based on racial pride? Is it racist for a white person to vote for a white person based on racial pride? If white people vote for the President because he is black, is that racist? If white people vote for Romney because he’s white is that racist? If black people vote for Romney because he’s white is that racist? If you don’t vote for your own race are you some kind of traitor to your race? Does race even exist, i.e., can it be scientifically proved or disproved? If race doesn’t exist, can anyone be a racist?

Take heart ……….. this is making the rounds:
“More than 1,000 American soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan in the last 27 months. This is more than the combined total of the nine years before. Thirty have died in August. The commander in chief is AWOL. Not a peep, although he ordered the White House flag flown at half-mast for the Sikhs that were killed.
There is a deep disgust, a fury, growing in the ranks of the military against the indifferent incompetence of this president. It has taken on a dangerous tone. No one knows what to do about him, but the anger runs deep as the deaths continue with no strategic end in sight to the idiocy of this war. Obama has had 4 years to end this futile insanity, during which time he has vacationed, golfed, campaigned, and generally ignored the plight of our men and women in uniform.
But, there is now a movement afoot in the armed services to launch a massive get out the vote drive against this president. Not just current active duty types, but the National Guard, Reserves, the retired, and all other prior service members. This is no small special interest group, but many millions of veterans who can have an enormous impact on the outcome of the November election if they all respond. The million military retirees in Florida alone could mean an overwhelming victory in that state if they all show up at the polls.
It might not keep another one hundred U.S. troops from dying between now and November, but a turn out to vote by the military against this heart breaking lack of leadership can make a powerful statement that hastens a change to the indifference of this shallow little man who just lets our soldiers die.”
