Colin Powell endorses Obama; Sununu, McCain go nuts

Obama Powell

Yesterday, Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama for president, explaining that he believes the incumbent has done a good job on the economy given the situation he was handed. As a former secretary of state and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell also took serious issue with the foreign policy stances of Obama’s opponent, Mitt Romney, saying that ” I’m not quite sure which Governor Romney we would be getting with respect to foreign policy”:

“One day he has a certain strong view about staying in Afghanistan, but then on Monday night he agrees with the withdrawal. Same thing in Iraq. On almost every issue that was discussed on Monday night, Governor Romney agreed with the President with some nuances. But this is quite a different set of foreign policy views than he had earlier in the campaign. And my concern, which I’ve expressed previously in a public way, is that sometimes I don’t sense that he has thought through these issues as thoroughly as he should have, and he gets advice from his campaign staff that he then has to adjust to modify as he goes along.

INTERVIEWER: Are you concerned about the people that are advising Governor Romney?

POWELL: I think there’s some very, very strong neo-conservative views that are presented by the Governor that I have some trouble with. There are other issues as well, not just the economy and foreign policy. I’m more comfortable with President Obama and his administration when it comes to issues like what are we going to do about climate, what are we going to do about immigration? What are we going to do about education? Lots of things like that. I do not want to see the new Obamacare plan thrown off the table. It has issues, you have to fix some things in that plan. But what I see when I look at that plan is 30 million of our fellow citizens will now be covered by insurance. And I think that’s good. We’re one of the few nations in the world, with our size, population and wealth, that does not have universal health care.”

To which John Sununu, top surrogate for Mitt Romney replied:

“When you take a look at Colin Powell, you have to look at whether that’s an endorsement based on issues or he’s got a slightly different reason for endorsing President Obama. I think when you have somebody of your own race that you’re proud of being president of the United States, I applaud Colin for standing with him.”

Earlier in the day, Sen. John McCain lashed out at Powell as well.

“I think one of the sad aspects of his career is going to the United Nations Security Council and telling them things about Iraq that were absolutely false,” McCain said, going on to tell Powell that “you disappoint us and you have harmed your legacy even further by defending what has clearly been the most feckless foreign policy in my lifetime.”

UPDATE: Just in case anybody thought McCain merely had a bad moment, he repeated his childish little sniping today:

“Colin Powell, interestingly enough, said that Obama got us out of Iraq,” McCain said, standing outside of an American Legion hall. “But it was Colin Powell, with his testimony before the U.N. Security Council, that got us into Iraq.”

Sununu’s statement, which he later tried to back down, is deeply troubling. No one alive today possesses Powell’s level of experience at the highest levels of military and foreign policy, yet Sununu attempts to reduce him to a one-dimensional cartoon character motivated solely by racial affinity.

But personally, as I indicated yesterday in comments, McCain’s statement is more unforgivable. For whatever reason, Powell did indeed mislead the United Nations in his presentation regarding Iraq’s alleged possession of weapons of mass destruction, and he has acknowledged that as a blot on his record. But McCain was selling the WMD angle every bit as hard if not harder than Powell. Nobody in Congress was lobbying harder for an invasion of Iraq. Here is McCain in 2002:

Given that record, McCain’s swipe at Powell for his UN presentation comes off as extremely petty, utterly without dignity or integrity. It reveals the smallness of the man who uttered it. All in all, what McCain and Sununu have said tells us much more about their own character than it does about Powell.

I really look up to Colin Powell as a strong leader who is not afraid to cross party lines to endorse the man he views as most qualified. With his amount of experience “in the trenches”, I trust his judgment and admire him for standing up to his own party. I feel sorry for those who blindly follow their party (whichever one) without asking questions. Kudos, Mr. Powell.

POWELL: ”I’m not quite sure which Governor Romney we would be getting with respect to foreign policy”

Well, I’m not quite sure which General Powell we have regarding common sense. Anyone with his amount of experience and training who cannot see Obama for what he truly is ………. is scary !

What’s even more disturbing is what does this have to do with charter schools or MARTA ?

The election is not a race election. It’s the “gimmie thats” versus “let me keep thats”. If you live on govt programs or you’re sooooo enlightened that socialism just makes sense…you’ll vote one way. If you care about YOUR family first and simply want to keep the money you’ve earned…you’ll vote the other. People voting because of a SINGLE issue are misguided. If you have MONEY, you can overcome almost anything. So work hard and fight to keep it. If you don’t make alot of money OR feel guilty about making good money, I can’t help you. Adopt a poor family and support them. Just don’t make me do it. I’m happy and content with my life and I just don’t want what I’ve earned going to someone else. Someone I don’t have a say if they DESERVE help. It’s about control…not race.

Jay, to open up the race dialogue in voting, one only has to look at the cluster that is APS. Good Lord. Putting many of those incompetants in power to “keep the power” has made APS a laughing stock, and like it or not made Sununu’s remark (wrongly) irrelevant. So, it works both ways. By the way, although he is NOT in my district I support Sanford Bishop. Also, I was in Cain’s camp. Great business mind. Lets not bring up the “affair” info…..(Kennedy, Clinton, Roosevelt…….)

Suck, 10:13,

A sh*t load of two stars don’t make it to four unless someone is looking out for them. Powell served as National Security Chief under Reagan and retained his three star rank. He rose to prominence under George HW Bush who promoted him the Chair of the Joint Chiefs. where he served from 1989 to 1993 when Clinton got rid of him. Then 43 appointed him to Sec of State in 2000. Looks like a lot of those “racist” evil, vile Republicans took pretty good care of this guy.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Consumer sentiment rose to its highest level in five years in October as Americans were more upbeat about prospects for the economy and their own finances, a survey released on Friday showed.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan’s final reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment rose to 82.6 from 78.3 in September. It was at its highest level since September 2007 on a final reading basis.

Personally, I am very disappointed in McCain. He was that one guy (R) that I always said I would vote for, then his picks Palin as his running mate.

Stop kidding yourself. A prime reason that McCain picked Palin was to spite all his primary opponents. This is not the same McCain some of you like to think of when you consider his naval service.

Like I said Powell endorsed Obama the 1st time he ran and he stated that being the 1st “black” President was part of the reason for him voting for Obama. Jay…Sununu’s premise is hardly difficult to accept. Plenty of people have made it very clear that their vote for Obama is based primarily because they share the same reason. Second, no one who can claim to agree with the GOP could possibly vote for Obama based upon his record. This is the clearest political choice in modern American history. And finally, while John McCain can be, at times, petty…I think we can all agree that based upon his service and suffering in Vietnam, he has earned some right to it. Powell has always been a sell-out and a desk jockey. While McCain suffered in a POW camp, Powell was in an air-conditioned office. Powell took a completely false case before the UN, and had he been a true, exemplary leader who disagreed with the Bush doctrine, he would have resigned before doing so. But he didn’t. Powell has zero credibility.

Jay: “Racism can be found in human beings of every background.”

That’s conflating different issues really and a bit misleading.

Of course there is a natural tendency among ALL groups towards tribalism and rejection of the other, especially the ethno-/racial other. But modern racism, the systematic suppression and exploitation of people of color by primarily the European peoples is of a different order altogether.

The irony about America is that minorities have been complaining about post-Civil Rights Movement racism and the general response from the “mainstream” has been that racism doesn’t exist anymore. That is often followed with the “people are entitled to their opinions and just because they don’t agree with you doesn’t make them racists” or the “pick yourself up and do something” line. As soon as Obama got in office, many members of the “mainstream” started crying racism about everything under the sun.

Powell served in an air-conditioned office in Vietnam, Mr. Cochran?

How odd, then, that he earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service there, plus the Soldier’s Medal. As the commendation reads:

“Major Powell distinguished himself by valorous actions on 16 November 1968, while serving as G-3 Americal Division. On that date, the helicopter in which Major Powell was being transported with the Commanding General, Americal Division, crashed. With complete disregard for his own safety and while injured himself, Major Powell returned several times to the smoldering aircraft which was in danger of bursting into flames. In one instance he had to break away part of the wreckage in order to get to a trapped individual. Through his efforts all personnel were saved. Major Powell’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.”

So now what? Are you gonna call out the Swiftboaters on Powell, to try to denigrate his service and bravery?

Really. That’s just low.

Complete BS…If Powell endorsed Romney, the right wing would be touting it as loud and frequently as they could. I bet you know this, but choose to play stupid…

“WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy expanded at a slightly faster 2 percent annual rate from July through September, buoyed by an uptick in consumer spending and a burst of government spending. The Commerce Department says growth improved from the 1.3 percent rate in the April-June quarter”

Boom goes the economy. Four more years!.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“Growth came in a little higher than we had feared, largely because of the big jump in federal spending,” said Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics. “But the economy is still not growing rapidly enough to create sufficient jobs to reduce the unemployment rate.”.

“DannyX, how many white people hold office in Dekalb, Fulton, and Clayton counties? City of Atlanta? School boards in those counties?”

Btw RB, in fact there are a lot of whites elected to office in DeKalb, Fulton and Atlanta. In fact many whites have been appointed to Dept head and other positions by blacks in those areas also.

Now back to Gwinnett. How many minority department heads have been appointed there? How many minorities have been elected there?

Right now America’s wingnuts are asking Mittens:

Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife?
Do you love me!?
Will you love me forever!?
Do you need me!?
Will you never leave me!?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life!?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife!?
I gotta know right now
Before we go any further
Do you love me!!!?
Will you love me forever!!!?

And Mittens is answering:

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I’ll give you my answer in the morning

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I’ll give you my answer in the morning

@peter, when did the “economic indicators” include sentiment..grasping are we…

Most important, given the intellect of this blog: meatloaf has come out in support of Romney: he will now be called a racist and labelled a chicken sandwich. My guess is that taco mac will support Obama and his supporters will cause a run on enchiladas in Atlanta, leading to an uptick on the sale of tums, which will then improve consumer sentiment for which we ALL can feel better about the direction of the country..Rap your burrito around that one, JAY….

Moderate, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, etc, etc, do not represent most of the country. Like it or not, racism is still pretty rampant in the south. That’s particularly true in the more rural areas.
++++
Where did I say racism did not exist? However, you can’t claim it is one sided. Obama received a higher percentage of black vote than Kerry or Gore while also receiving more white votes.

Racism rampant in the south. (Opinion)
Obama wins higher percentage of white votes than Kerry or Gore. (Fact)

Is this the same Colin Powell that Jay roundly criticized awhile back for a misrepresentation before the U.N. on whether or not Iraq had WMDs? Well if Mr. Powell lacked honesty and character back then as Jay suggested then why is his word or opinion good as gold today?

Kinda strange not only that a Republican would endorse a Democrat but that he would endorse a Democrat with such a horrendous record on the economy and who is now embroiled in a foreign policy scandal. Can’t imagine the reason why Powell would be endorsing him. Hmmm.

General Powell is an honorable man, plain and simple. Almost no person in the world can dispute that fact. He spoke from the heart and knows what he’s talking about. Foreign policy is something he knows. Chairman of the Joint Cheifs, former Sec. of State. I think that qualifies him to judge bot Romneyand Omama. John Sununu is nothing more than a bully. If you have watched him throughout the Presidential race, he has been nothing but mean and devisive. There is not much open thought to the things he has said. He is a man who is cut from the same cloth as Dick Cheny. America is much better since Caeny is gone.
John McCain is still angry he lost the 2008 election. Get over it.

Anita

If Obama can’t turn this economy around in four years he certain ly won’t be able to do it in eight. He has admitted by his own words that he can’t change Washington from the inside. So let’s put him on the outside where he might be useful. We simply can’t afford four more yaers of his excessive spending and economic incompetence. His experience as president is useless since it amounts to nothing more than four years of failure and his “forward” plan is more of the same. Those who continue to do the same things over and over expecting different results are truly insane and those who approve of that madness are certifiable.

WMD. We all know that Iraq didn’t have them. But there are two things here that people seem to forget:
1) The UN Security council and their associates for years were confirming WMD. So not only was Bush “wrong”, the UN was wrong? The same UN that Obama wants us to lean heavily on? If I’m not mistaken, we leaned heavily on the UN’s findings and research and they were very concerned about WMD

2) I’ve read several times that part of Sadam Hussein’s overall defense of his country was having everyone in the Middle East believe he had WMD so that they wouldn’t invade. When in all actuallity, he didn’t have any at all, or a small amount, but he had everyone believing he did, so they left him alone. Pretty smart if you ask me, but it got him in the end.

I don’t believe Powell or any one else in the US intentionally pushed the WMD theory w/o having as many facts as possible. Our country plods along way to slowly on this stuff for us to make a knee jerk reaction. The US is also the country that had NO clue that the Soviet Union collapsed or the Berlin Wall was falling until the day of/before and they saw it on CNN.
