All Obama had to do was say that the consulate was attacked, the Ambassador and 3 others were killed and we are investigating the events and facts to determine who is responsible and their motivations.

They obviously didn’t want to call it a terror attack for political benefit…so instead they pushed the video card instead of saying they didn’t know all the facts yet…It’s the cover up that destroys credibility not so much the mistake/action

I think Romney is actually very intelligent. And when, during the last debate, Obama said this (emphasis mine):

think it’s important to step back and think about what happened in Libya. Keep in mind that I and Americans took leadership in organizing an international coalition that made sure that we were able to, without putting troops on the ground at the cost of less than what we spent in two weeks in Iraq, liberate a country that had been under the yoke of dictatorship for 40 years.

Got rid of a despot who had killed Americans and as a consequence, despite this tragedy, you had tens of thousands of Libyans after the events in Benghazi marching and saying America is our friend. We stand with them.

…if Romney thought there was political advantage to be made by criticizing Obama’s assessment of the situation in Libya, he could have done so. But he chose not to, and I think it’s because he is smart enough to know that there’s “no there, there.”

I still don’t understand why Obama claimed it was a terror attack in Rose Garden (although his UN speech mentioning “video” over and over) all the while his people were citing the video?

You can’t say that this has not been spun due to election year until these contradictions are cleared up…

Cheney was the commander in chief when Colin Powell addressed the UN while Osama Bin Laden slipped away, (virtually as he spoke). Now that’s some real brassy cover fire. You can’t blame a soldier for obeying orders from his commander in chief. This was the last obstacle to setting in motion all the different Islamic drumbeats that we keep hearing today. Talk about a ripple effect frog in the pond story. Our foreign policy marches to the echoes of our own shock and awe. I was embarrassed to hear Romney go full palin on foreign policy in debate 3. He kept reciting a litany of the different arab hot spots. Like being able to recite them was all you had to do to be president. Please tell me Katie Couric didn’t switch parties.

McCain’s got a conflict of interest, he has probably been promised the Secretary of Defense or some incentive.

I think ego rots the brain. It is absolute amazing to me the margin this country gives its leaders and reporters on false statements. You cannot make decisions operating on such thin reality. The mess we are in today is directly sponsored by this careless activity. We fight wars, invest money, execute criminals, marry, and report news, as seen in the CNN wrong reporting of the Supreme Court hearing, I figured FOX would get it wrong on purpose, all in a huge hurry facts be damn. American journalists have disappeared and have been replaced by ex-Entertainment Tonight .Frontmen who have NO journalistic integrity, (or probably any integrity) and who are consumed with ratings and NOT reporting and definitely NOT digging for the truth.

When CNN started following Faux News’ lead by making up invisible disasters and pandering to the illiterate all in the name of ratings — it was time to turn the channel before I threw up.

It is too late if you wait to start when the crisis begins ………… you plan for the worst ahead of time and you have assest in place ready to go to carry out that plan. In one of the most dangerous places in the world for a U.S. Ambassador this was apparently not done. Someone dropped the ball bigtime.

Everything I’ve read on the topic lately seems to indicate that diplomatic security (perimeter security, personnel security, residential security, et al) is the responsibility of the *host* nation, not of the Marines serving at diplomatic posts. It seems — again, from what I’ve read — that the Marine contingents are generally far too small for that, and that their tasks are more often *internal* security of the facility they serve, as well as ceremonial. The key task they seem to fulfill (which I did not know) would be to ensure that secure commo gear, sensitive documents and other classified material) gets removed or destroyed in the event that perimeter security is breached.

Can you perhaps comment on this? Did you ever serve as an embassy guard or did you have some Marine friends/associates who pulled that duty at some point?

if there was a lot of confusion b/c of the “fog of war”, then wouldn’t it be reasonable for Obama, Susan Rice, Hillary Clinton, Jay Carney, and the rest of his gang to tell the American people and the UN that “…we don’t really know what happened at this point, but we are conducting a full investigation…”

Do you think that our instant gratification society would tolerate such a thing? Obama’s been called almost every “in-” and “un-” word in the dictionary. Had that statement been made, all we would be hearing now is that he doesn’t know what he’s doing or he’s in over his head.

This whole fiasco is a “heads, they win.. tails, you lose” situation for Obama. Regardless to what was said or done in that time after the attack, he would have been treated the same exact way by the Right. The only thing different would be the accusations being thrown.

Whether its a scandal or not is debatable. It might be just gross incompetence. Either way it highlights a serious foreign policy deficiency in the Obama administration just weeks before a very close election.

Can you with a straight face tell me that you wouldn’t be handing it to a republican administration if the shoe was on the other foot?

In any case its up to the American people to decide for themselves whether its a big deal or not. I think they will agree that it is and Obama will pay a price for it at the polls.

They held for a long time with just a minimum of assets. Basically, the two SEALs who came to their aid ran out of ammo. Go back and read what I said. If they had had more security they could possibly have held out long enough for an evacuation plan to be put into effect.

NO ONE PLANNED for the worst contingency and the rest is history. Someone should be held to account.

1) There was a riot or a staged attack or a protest outside of the consulate on 9/11

2) Americans, AS WELL AS, the Syrians who were guarding the consulate died.

3) Pres. O tells the American people what happened.

Now, unless the president has a time machine in the basement of the white house and quickly teleported himself BACK to washington AFTER the deaths of those people, then there is NOTHING he could’ve done to stop those deaths. Let me repeat this — NOTHING.

4) Pres. O stated that those who are responsible for the deaths WILL BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE.

(In Dem talk that means — they’re as good as dead. In Repub talk that means, we have to find a way to go to war and nuke a couple of people while NEVER finding the ones who actually did the killing).

The person responsible is the one who either denied additional security (regardless of yearly budgets you can always short-term more assets for a trip to Benghazi or anywhere else) or the person who knew additional security was needed but “failed to act”.

I have posted this before but I will say it again. For many years I planned arrests, search warrants, raids, buy-busts, etc. If anyone had been seriously injured or killed under my supervision, EVERYTHING I did (or didn’t do) would have been investigated and scrutinized and I would have been held to account.

I expect no more or less of others regardless of their rank or position.

At least in this latest desperate piece by Jay he didn’t blame the ambassador for his own death as he did the other day. Within two hours (or maybe less since we had a drone up there giving somebody somewhere a live feed of the attack complete with its mortar fire and automatic weapons fire) we knew it was a terrorist attack. Jay you are badly mistaken. There is plenty here that stinks and if you weren’t in some “Must get Obama re-elected” induced coma you would acknowledge it. But you won’t. If the tables were turned and the President was a republican and this would have happened, you and the NYT’s would be calling for their head. What is truly “Hillarious” is that Hillary Clinton has destroyed both her reputation and her political career trying to protect a self-enamoured megalomaniac (Obama) who really doesn’t give a doo-diddly-damn about her. Peoples careers and reputations seem to not last long around Obama, do they? What is the reason for that?

Here’s what Panetta said today:

“(The) basic principle is that you don’t deploy forces into harm’s way without knowing what’s going on; without having some real-time information about what’s taking place,” Panetta told Pentagon reporters. “And as a result of not having that kind of information, the commander who was on the ground in that area, Gen. Ham, Gen. Dempsey and I felt very strongly that we could not put forces at risk in that situation.”

So a couple of generals working in the area didn’t have time or the intel to know enough about what was going on to send troops in…but the con line is “it’s Obama’s fault!” But then we tout “trusting” the military leaders on the ground…

Equating 9/11 and Benghazi is preposterous. While both were attacks against the U.S. the similarities (except for one, which I will get to) end there. The major differences of the scale, magnitude and complexity of the attacks themselves, the planning involved, the warning signs available to intelligence agencies, the long term effects of the attacks (physical, emotional, financial, legal/policy etc) are lightyears apart between the two.

The only similarity is that both were conceivably preventable, at least when looked at in hindsight. Bush and his administration could have done their job and focused intelligence resources where they belonged instead of on political or ideological nonsense (the war on internet porn anyone?).

Benghazi might have been prevented if the ambassador had been forced to travel with a large military escort. Whether this options was possible or even diplomatically desirable, I don’t know.

As for the Presidents themselves? When Al Qaeda attacked the United States from Afghanistan (or from Saudi Arabia ?) Bush invaded Afghanistan, and then Iraq. Brilliant. Nary a peep in protest from the right wing. Where was the right wing outrage over the official Bush Admin reports that the air quality in Manhattan was fine after the collapse of the towers, i.e. an actual lie that had actual consequences to the American people?

When persons unknown attacked a backwater third-world diplomatic outpost, and the administration responds by releasing information thought to be true at the time, and is slow to release further updated but unconfirmed information as it comes in, this is a cause for a big scandal?

The wing nuts are holding this administration to a heads we win, tails you lose standard. If any information the administration releases immediately, without first thoroughly investigating it, turns out to be inaccurate, “they lied”. If they withhold information until it all can be thoroughly investigated, “they are stonewalling”, or “aren’t transparent”.

Losing their last two marbles is correct Jay.

Great article Jay. Several things worth mentioning that are above and beyond the cons ability to understand Middle East politics:
1. Furor over the movie created by some right wing religious nuts in the US dissipated quickly due to Obama’s actions;
2.This week the following countries countries collaborated to capture or kill the assassins of our ambassador: Turkey, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.
3. Obama has unlike the neocons avoided every temptation to put boots on the ground in Libya or elsewhere in the region;
4. Contrary to that fake boogeyman routine in the debate by Romney that we all need to hide because Al Quaida is back hunting Americans, it should be noted that we have successfully chased them out of Afghanistan, Yemen and now Somalia.
5. A combined US, Kenyan, French and Israeli military effort wiped out Al Quaida in Somalia a few weeks ago.
6. Fundamentalists have been hunted down by Egypt and Israel in the Sinai and Egypt has taken a hard line on Hamas.
7. Thousands of Libyans took to the streets condemning the assassination of our Ambassador.
8. Israel wiped out Iranian long range missiles this week being manufactured or stored in Sudan on a long range bombing mission with no protests from other Arab countries.

So tell me cons and Mr. Romney how Obama’s policies are failing in the Muslim world and how Bush/Cheney did more to prevent terrorism??????????????.

Earth to Jay: no one has a problem with people being uncertain as to who was responsible for the attack. Indeed, most of the statements issued by the Obama administration were very guarded and expressed uncertainty. That changed a few days after the attack, however.

Jay Carney said on September 14th that “We have no information to suggest that it was a preplanned attack.”

That is patently false. The e-mails we have just learned about indicating that terrorists were taking credit for that attack is, IN FACT, information suggestive of a “preplanned attack”.

On September 16th, Susan Rice declared that

“There was a hateful video that was disseminated on the Internet. It had nothing to do with the United States government, and it’s one that we find disgusting and reprehensible. It’s been offensive to many, many people around the world. That sparked violence in various parts of the world, including violence directed against Western facilities including our embassies and consulates.”

and about the attack in Benghazi that:

“Our current best assessment, based on the information that we have at present, is that, in fact, what this began as, it was a spontaneous — not a premeditated — response to what had transpired in Cairo.”

and:

“But putting together the best information that we have available to us today our current assessment is that what happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of– of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, which were prompted, of course, by the video.”

These are definitive statements, which are to this day – given even generous Jay’s stance – are not unequivocally substantiated by the evidence. They were CERTAINLY not “facts”.

Jay Carney said on September 18th that:

“Our belief, based on the information we have, is it was the video that caused the unrest in Cairo, and the video and the unrest in Cairo that helped — that precipitated some of the unrest in Benghazi and elsewhere. What other factors were involved is a matter of investigation.”

Again, another definitive statement when none was really warranted.

Then Obama himself on September 20th said that:

“What we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests.”

Yet another definitive statement when none was really warranted.

What people have a problem with is Obama and his administration giving people the STRONG impression that it was the result of a spontaneous uprising in response to an anti-Islamic film when what should have been continually said is that we are unclear as to the cause. Why would anyone do that when the evidence was not conclusive and that there was clearly a strong military component to the attack?

I think it is clear to the objective observer that there is something fishy about Obama and his administration’s attempt to color the attack more as mob violence than anything else. And then there are people like Jay who want to cover over this problem by culling out a few quotes from a characteristically politic and restrained Condalezza Rice. Obama has shown his cruder side lately by calling Romney a ***********. Maybe it’s a case of the pot (and liberals like Jay) calling the kettle black.

I have read the e-mails, I’ve watched as much as possible of the hearings, and read up to and including today’s statements from Panetta, a link to which I posted above. The “facts” are still being learned, and the caution many are taking to find out as much as possible before assigning blame is exactly what needs to happen. This isn’t an Old West film, and John Wayne isn’t going to swagger in and kill some injuns to make everyone feel better. Perhaps Mr. Romney should have taken the time to learn “facts” before he tried in vain to score some political points in his hasty commentary. It will be some time before we get what unclassified information we can, and I for one choose NOT to jump to judgment and blame. At this point, do you think it wise to send troops into an unknown situation as General Ham, the commander on the ground in the region, has clearly stated could not safely be done?

What exactly is the motive for this “something fishy”? Please be objective when you explain what political gains the Obama administration will have made if they “get away with pulling a fast one” over this.

Wouldn’t an objective observer consider that the administration (and likely Congress) will be investigating the incident thoroughly? And that any intentional telling of untruths would inevitably come to light?

Its time for an Occam’s razor moment here.
Which is the simplest, most likely explanation?
1)That Obama is trying to “hide something”, and if so what? If this is the simplest most likely explanation, the motive should be clearly evident.

1)Or that the facts leading up to the incident are still unclear and being investigated, resulting in inaccurate information being released in an effort to try and keep people informed?

So why didn’t the Obama administration just say we are gathering intelligence on what happened and can’t comment right now? Instead they tried to assign blame on someone else like they have on every single issue. We all watched Obama blame the inflamatory Youtube video and then deny it in debate number 2. Of course, the Candy defense and then later correction should be mentioned as well. FDR used to have fireside chats to discuss difficult issues on the radio. Over the course of six weeks, Obama got caught fabricating the truth in order to shift blame to someone else as usual. The never ending spin has created a credibility gap for Obama where the public simply does not believe him.The interesting thing to watch in my opinion is the behind the scenes deal cut with the Clintons. Bill has been distancing himself from Obama for the past few weeks. Hillary’s acceptance of responsibility for the Benghazi incident comes with a price. The Clintons will be head of the Democratic party and kick the Chicago crowd out once Obama loses. Bill wants to be the power behind the throne and has been hedging his bets. I loved the quote from Cleveland where Clinton said that he thought Obama was going to cry after not being able to answer the fellow who had lost confidence after supporting him in 2008. The fellow wanted to know what Obama was going to do about the rising cost of every day living and all he got was the standard bucket of killing bin Laden, ending Iraq, etc. A more appropriate Monty Python video describing Obama and the Benghazi situation would have been “Spam, Spam, Spam….”

It’s obvious none of us will change the mind of the other’s. Since I voted 2 weeks ago it doesn’t matter to me, except for the truth. I’ve read at least two articles the Ambassador Stevens was extremely gifted and thrived on “individual” contact to convert to our side. He knew the risks he was taking. Benghazi was not the Embassy and did not have the security. He knew the danger but had calculated the risk/reward value. Since he’s we’ll never know what he thought. But he was representing his Country.

The victims of 9/11 were innocent civilians murdered by extremists. The Bush administration’s attempts to spin it as anything other than the second Pearl Harbor were laughable. Saddam had nothing to do with it. All our brave men and women sacrificed for Bush agenda in Iraq should have been in pursuit of OBL. Bad Republican.

Any attempt to make Benghazi another 9/11 is desperate Republicans.

For all you Republicans supporting Willard, you don’t support the Military. He’s a draft dodger. USMC, since you use the letters, I assume you served. Any Vietnam vet supporting the Republican ticket has forgotten what we fought for and 58,000 of our comrades died for. At least I served and didn’t weasel my way out.

If that were to be proven, then as a liberal I would fully support his impeachment. As much as I liked Clinton, I didn’t support his lying under oath, and he got what he deserved. BUT, that said, I don’t think at this early point we can determine what the WH knew as it put out those early statements. That’s the problem with the instant nature of news reporting in the media today- you don’t have time to do much more than speak to what information you have at hand, and everyone, including Leon Panetta and Gen Ham have stated clearly they didn’t know enough even as it was hitting the news channels and papers. It also doesn’t excuse Mr. Romney’s hasty response that was clearly a case of playing politics from someone even further removed from the situation that the news media.

CNN has spent the better part of the last month (since the first debate) throwing feces at their news wall waiting to see if any of it sticks to Mitt Romney.

Most of it has a war-against-women theme, so you see assorted female news readers and correspondents and pundits rolling their eyes and sighing with Al Gore-like hyperbole at what a Neanderthal Mitt Romney is. What’s Mitt’s offense? Well, for starters, he stored data about female job candidates in binders (soon to be referred to as the “b” word to avoid understandable offense taken at this heinous slur).

I think Soledad O’Bama has to get her facial muscles massaged during commercial breaks to prevent cramping while she feigns outrage and incredulity during her breathless segments.

So reports on intemperate remarks about abortion made by marginal GOP Senatorial candidates in Missouri and Indiana remain in an endless CNN loop. All in the name of the peoples right to know?

Nonsense. Try agenda-driven reportage.

Given all this, you, Mr Bookman are in a tizzy because of right wing hysteria over Benghazi? Talk about cherry-picking your outrage.

We lost an ambassador a month ago. That hasn’t happened in 40 years. Ambassador Stevens was extracted from the “sanctuary” of the U.S. embassy after a prolonged attack by terrorists and murdered in the streets.

You’d think CNN might spend a significant segment of their airtime on this matter – breaking news still. Particularly given the conflicting and confused messages – some of it clearly self-serving – emanating from the State Department, White House and our UN Ambassador.

You’d be thinking wrong.

Well, if you do any reading on Ambassador Stevens, you’d understand he was known for risk-taking and had spent quite a bit of time in Benghazi. His decision to travel there, from what we know, was his decision, in spite of the potential threat level on that day. He was known for being effective in what would clearly be dangerous situations and had risked his life numerous times. I’ve read of nothing saying he was “sent” to Benghazi or of his concern for his, or others, safety at the time of the attack. If so, he would not have traveled with such a small security force.

Carl: that was based on statements issued from the consulate itself based on what personnel there knew. It seems now that may have been a carefully staged ruse to allow the actual attack force to form unnoticed, giving them the element of surprise.

Oh please, it’s obvious what the GOP was upset about because they said it over and over again. Can’t help it if you decide to ignore them and put your own words in their mouths.

1. That the staff requested additional security, which was denied. And according to the State Department, the denial had nothing to do with a lower budget allotted by Congress.
2. That Obama continued pushing the video story for two weeks, despite knowing that this was a pre-planned attack by an organized group less than a day afterwards.

Of course there is a fog of war. So why was Obama so quick to blame this on a video, have the creator of the video brought in by government officials who still hold him, and thus show the rest of the world that our free speech principles are very thin indeed? If there was truly a fog of war and they didn’t know what was going on, why are there statements from them blaming the video? Shouldn’t they have said “We don’t know yet and are still gathering intelligence?” They said that eventually, but only after knowingly pushing a lie.

But it doesn’t matter. Obama could kill someone in cold blood live on national television, and Jay will make excuses for him. Probably something like, “It’s ok, the dead guy made an offensive video and votes Republican, plus Bush made Obama do it.”

double-edged sword. You get attacked by the media if you don’t give an answer, and you get attacked if you change it. When you look at how long it was uncertain whether or not it was safe to send in the FBI, and when you consider Panetta’s statements today, clearly it was a long time before even the military had any credible intelligence. To stand by that would have been media suicide in my opinion. It’s never okay to say “we don’t know for sure” for long, and that’s regrettable for anyone in the position of having to make the call, regardless of political party. I don’t support the continued emphasis on the video, but the information out of the consulate as the crowd built outside was all anyone knew for sure that could be released until classification of information could be done.

After OCS he had a choice to go to Germany or Thailand to be an adviser. He chose Thailand.

He has told me of how the US government would rent cruise ships off the off the coast of Thailand. The generals would fly in on Friday afternoon from Vietnam and fly back on Sunday as if they were going back to the office.

You sir, are no gent. That was based on reports from the CIA station chief in Libya that stated that the “protests” were used as a cover for the militants to gather and initiate the attack. Even the CIA believes the “crowd” gathering outside the consulate wanted to give the impression of a protests as cover.

While I agree that blaming it on a protest over a video may seem ridiculous in hindsight, that was about all anyone knew for sure until the CIA could analyze all the information coming in and determine what really happened. It would have been foolish and could have caused much more trouble to have gone any further in making statements until all the information coming in could be verified. As we’ve learned all too well in our history, careful, measured responses that develop as verifiable facts come in are what we should wait for instead of flying off half-cocked into a response that would have only made the situation worse.

There is a serious problem with your reasoning or Democrat supplied talking points or what ever you want to call your summary.

Even now, a month later, what Rice refers to as “the fog of war” has yet to lift. It took 10 days after the attack to even get FBI agents on the ground in Benghazi. To this day, there are still indications that the anti-Muslim video and the protests in Egypt played some role in what happened.

This is disputed by the Obama administration actions of quickly sending out their apologists to spread the anti-Muslim video tail The president himself, his secretary of state, and his UN ambassador quickly pulled the trigger using the video within a matter of hours in spite of the “fog of war”. To this day I do not recall anyone in the administration mentioning “war”. To date what evidence is there that the so called anti-Muslim video palyed any part what so ever? I have seen no evidence of the video while there is ample evidence of it being a planned attack even to the point of the ambassador himself predicting it days in advance. It was indeed a strange spontaneous demonstration by a group who happened to show up simultaneously while armed with “war” making weapons. I guess the media line is that it was a coincidence that it happened on 9/11! Our ambassador was a fortune teller then according to his requests for help in andvance of knowing about the video. Today, a father of one of the murdered seals reported on a Portland radio station that at the ceremony for the dead held by the white house, Hillary Clinton told him,”We are going to arrest the film maker and put him in jail.” Forget freedom of speech with these clowns. The poor man is still in Jail. This abuse of power was planned by the administration while the “fog of war” was still lingered obscuring all facts except the self serving convenient myth being used by the white house.

This is not a minor thing. Serious crimes were committed that may include high crimes and misdemeanors. It is likely, the weapons used by the terrorists were supplied by this Administration possibly in violation of International law.

My question is this Jay: Just what in the H was the president doing while our people were under attack for six hours? For six hours our fearless leader, the killer of Bin Laden, did what? Did he have his sleeves rolled up while watching the attack take place Was he in the situation room? Were Panetta, the Joint Chiefs breathlessly waiting for his tough decision to protect american citizens and property? Was Valerie Jarrett there to give political advice? Or, was he too busy planning his political trip to Las Vegas? Each new revelation, each new excuse by the media, sheds more light on the incompetence of this administration.

Righty: read the comments from Panetta today. The military were well aware of what was going on and the general in charge of forces in the region was hesitant to launch a military response, even as it became evident that this was no ordinary protest and was, in fact, an attack. When the general on the ground can’t clearly determine what’s going on and what should be done, how can you expect the WH to know anything more than he does? He was the closest commanding officer to the situation with any ability to do anything about it, and even he (General Ham) didn’t have enough information to engage military forces without hesitation.

Even General Ham, who as I’ve posted several times this evening was the general on the ground in the region, didn’t have enough reliable intel to launch a military response at the time. He didn’t feel it was safe to go in with the military, and he should know if anyone would have at that point. The attackers used the element of surprise brilliantly and there wasn’t time for anyone, even the CIA apparently, to know what was coming and respond in time.

As much as I like Condi Rice she’s never been in combat. There’s no fog of war when your people are under attack. I’ll defer to some better military minds than my own that said there wasn’t time to deploy an effective reaction force to Benghazi timely enough to make a difference. However, given the documented risk why was there not a fast team close by? That question is on the White House.

WHAT WOULD

First off, it wasn’t a “muslim country” that attacked the embassy…it was a pack of terrorists bent, like so many of our good rightists hereabouts, on doing in the efforts of the political factions elected by the people of Libya to bring to them a stable, western values democratic state.

Turn Libya into a “sandbox?” Well, if you know anything about its geography, it’s pretty much that already a few miles off the coast…

Kowtowing to the Muslim King of Saudi Arabia? Hmmm. seems to me that was Bush more than Barack…

And the midget of Iran…ask that two-toed turkey about Barack and Bibi’s redline…
