The right wing is losing its last two marbles over Benghazi

Former Secretary of State Condi Rice went on Fox News Wednesday to discuss the Obama administration’s handling of the Benghazi attacks. Given her background and experience, she actually knows a thing or two about such issues, and it showed in her comments.

“When things are unfolding very very quickly, it’s not always easy to know what’s going on on the ground…,” she told Greta Van Susteren. “There’s a big picture to be examined here but we don’t have all of the pieces and I think it’s easy to try to jump to conclusions about what happened here. It’s probably better to let the relevent (investigative) bodies do their work.”

“The problem is when there is a fog of war like this, there are a lot of competing stories coming in, there’s a lot a competing information coming in, and it takes a little while to know precisely what has happened,” she went on to explain.

Even now, a month later, what Rice refers to as “the fog of war” has yet to lift. It took 10 days after the attack to even get FBI agents on the ground in Benghazi. To this day, there are still indications that the anti-Muslim video and the protests in Egypt played some role in what happened. There are still serious doubts whether the local militia group believed responsible has any ties whatsoever to al Qaida. And there is very good reason to believe that the attack was a crime of opportunity rather than some carefully planned military operation.

All in all, the tumult on the right about this story probably has the lowest content-to-noise ratio of any of the fake outrages fabricated so far by the right-wing media, and yes, I understand that’s saying a lot. Conservatives can’t even articulate what they’re mad about, only that they’re mad and somehow it’s Obama’s fault.

Michael Hirsh, a journalist with extensive overseas and warzone experience, does a good job of putting the fake scandal in context in a piece for National Journal. Take, for example, the newly released e-mails in which the State Department was notified that an Islamist group had claimed credit on Facebook for the Benghazi attacks. (The Facebook posting also called for an attack on the embassy in Tripoli, which never took place).

As Hirsh notes:

“The e-mails in question contained nothing more than “raw” intelligence, uncorroborated and unverified, that often flows in after an event. Intelligence officials typically don’t deliver their assessments until they have “finished” reports based on multiple sources, and corroborated evidence, and Obama officials such as (UN Ambassador Susan) Rice certainly would not have been out in front of the TV cameras citing raw intelligence. And as the government’s most senior officials say, the Benghazi case has taken them a long time to finish. “People forget that a Palestinian group was the first to claim credit for 9/11,” the intelligence official said. “There was no message from the field in those first hectic days that would have eliminated questions or proven who was behind the attack.”

He can believe him, or you can believe what the Sean Hannitys of the world are saying, which goes something like this:

mornin’.

They’ve been desperately wanting a scandal for 4 years, that’s why they keep making up Watergate events…

Four years? More like… lessee, Jan. 1977 was… about 36 years, let’s call it.

I’ve long held that many GOP supporters hold a very long-standing grudge–it’s actually inherited at this point, since it has been so long–over Nixon’s resignation. I realize that this is me indulging in a bit of collective mind-reading, but it’s something I’ve heard in dribs and drabs from conservatives over and over again, over the years.

I think it is only natural to feel that a score needs to be settled, and that they are entitled to take down one of “ours” after one of “theirs” had been more or less forcibly removed.

Of course the “forcible” part is part of the mythology–we are supposed to believe, from some, that Nixon’s resignation was voluntary, that he chose not to put the country through a fight he could’ve won, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that he was in fact going to be convicted in the Senate and had been told so by those GOP colleagues.

The Republican’s are voting for a tax nightmare !!!!!!!

WASHINGTON — A small nonpartisan research center operated by professed “geeks” has found itself at the center of a rancorous $5 trillion debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney.

No white paper or policy manifesto put out during the presidential campaign has proved more controversial than an August study by the Washington-based Tax Policy Center, a respected nonprofit that issues studiously detailed tax analyses.

That study found, in short, that Mr. Romney could not keep all of the promises he had made on individual tax reform: including cutting marginal tax rates by 20 percent, keeping protections for investment income, not widening the deficit and not increasing the tax burden on the poor or middle class.

It concluded that Mr. Romney’s plan, on its face, would cut taxes for rich families and raise them for everyone else.

Sorry Ken. You’re shockingly wrong, and you’ve really crossed a line talking like this.

Our executive branch is trying to blame Americans for an act of terroristic violence by others. The fact that Obama and his crew even approach this event with such a mindset is appalling. The fact that they hung their hat on this crude explanation, not once, but repeatedly, and not in the absence of facts but in spite of the facts exposes a deep and troubling propensity on the Obama’s part.

Even if the attackers were waving copies of that video, our president should have denounced them for trying to hide their actions behind such a smokescreen. He should have denounced them for trying to blame others for their actions, not joined them in doing so.

But the terrorists weren’t waving copies of that video, either. You can pretend they were in order to keep that false narrative going. This is clearly your choice. So let’s be very clear about the choice you’re making here, which is a choice even Obama is now hiding from because it didn’t work this time. You’re choosing to defend people who staged a terrorist attack on our country on the grounds that our society’s alleged acceptance of Islamophobic speech by one individual legitimates killing our ambassador.

That’s a sickening attitude for a newspaper columnist to hold. But it’s even more sickening when the story itself is fabricated to begin with, because it reveals a very ingrained and reflexive desire to blame Americans despite the facts.

And that is what the “right wing” is objecting to.

One more thing, regarding marbles: at the bare minimum, you ought to show you political opponents at least as much respect as you do, say, terrorists you think have murdered people because they’re mad about a video. In other words, when you address the political revulsion to Obama’s scapegoating of Americans for the Benghazi attack, at the very least acknowledge your opponents’ real complaint. If you can peer into the heart of a mob half way around the world and empathize with what you see there, surely you can perceive and engage a simple argument being made about foreign policy in American editorial pages. To pretend that there is no such complaint and that irrationality is all you’re seeing is pretty ironic, considering the subject.

There was some reaction to a way-upthread post of mine where I boldly asserted that I don’t think Mitt Romney is a stupid person, generally from those of my general ideological ilk who said they didn’t think that GW Bush was stupid, either.

For what it’s worth, I agree with them. I never bought into the somewhat-popular-at-the-time notion that Bush 43 was merely a literal fortunate (grand) son; obviously he had political chops and could think on his feet when called upon to do so, as anyone who viewed his debate performance with Ann Richards can attest. My knock against GW Bush was that he was intellectually lazy–he did what he had to do but (AFAIK) never much more, and as President it often showed.

Yes. And that is a symptom of the overarching flaw I’d just identified. When you are intellectually lazy, you don’t bother to seek out opposing views and, as President Obama likes to say, “take yourself out of your comfort zone.”

A public official does not choose not to seek out alternative views out of ideological rigidity, I think, so much out of laziness. So let’s call that what it is.

Again–if you read “Audacity of Hope” you find many examples of Obama trying (overly hard, IMHO) to see the merit in an opposing argument.

And to state the bleedin’ obvious, had Bush shared some of that curiosity (another word some people like to use, with merit) we may well have been spared the tragedy of the Iraq invasion and occupation.

And, I would ask if anyone remembers the Reagan response to that tragedy? What dramatic and retalitory actions he took in response to the bombing and great loss of young American blood?

You don’t remember his response? Well, it’s probably because there wasn’t one.

Only banter.

We regret the loss of these lives and the tragedy just demonstrates the complexity of the conflict and the difficulty is accessing risks in these volatile regions.

From a real civil liberty champion——-Greenwald———

“The Post’s Miller recognizes the watershed moment this represents: “The creation of the matrix and the institutionalization of kill/capture lists reflect a shift that is as psychological as it is strategic.” As he explains, extra-judicial assassination was once deemed so extremist that very extensive deliberations were required before Bill Clinton could target even Osama bin Laden for death by lobbing cruise missiles in East Africa. But:

Targeted killing is now so routine that the Obama administration has spent much of the past year codifying and streamlining the processes that sustain it.

To understand the Obama legacy, please re-read that sentence. As Murtaza Hussain put it when reacting to the Post story: “The US agonized over the targeted killing Bin Laden at Tarnak Farms in 1998; now it kills people it barely suspects of anything on a regular basis.”

From the father of one of the dead Americans “Hillary Clinton’s comments to Woods raise even more questions about the White House’s official story on the Benghazi attack, which has already been extremely inconsistent. After apologizing for his loss, Woods said Clinton told him that the U.S. would “make sure that the person who made that film is arrested and prosecuted.” Yes, people, it was the video, move on because you are not owed the truth. And why should anyone be arrested for a video, isn’t free speech practiced anymore ? The beef against W is not that he’s such a squirrel. No, it’s that he split the executive branch into two parts: cheney became defacto commander in chief and W handled the shopping. In the late summer of 2002, the CIA had finally located OBL. W ordered Rummy to attack Osama Bin Laden after the CIA tree’d him. Rummy flat refused to attack in the face of the enemy in a time of war. Cheney literally belayed the order and instead began to move forward on Iraq. W is a lilly-livered coward who caved into their demands. It’s the most shameful moment in our history. Nixon said that if the president breaks the law, then its legal because the president did it. W must have thought the same about treason. I think Nixon and W mixed up the Papacy with the Presidency.

I don’t want to see the country go through with a hanging, after a fair trial, of those three sellouts. So I just let it go. Benedict Arnold sold the plans to the fort. Cheney sold the fort. But I just let it go. I tell myself, this is the government I chose. I’ll take the good with the bad. When we slaughter Islamic populations, and declare total perpetual war on millions of people, I don’t ask questions. I just let it go.

These five have had their constitutional rights snatched away ie. life and liberty by the vile lies and intentional cover ups of this severly flawed administration.

“Thanks, USMC, for proving my point so d*** eloquently.”

How professional of you Jay. Someone from your background shouldn’t have to use such language. If you really believe in what you believe in, then maybe it’s time you take a deep look at yourself.

Prove me wrong Jay, I dare you.

“They don’t know what happened in Libya and I’d suggest that they don’t really even care. They have a political agenda steeped in hatred. ”

Do you know what happened in Libya? Most do care but not for the reasons you do–protecting Obama. There is no political agenda like the progressive liberal/communist objectives. Are you one of those who think this is a democratic government and not a representative government?

TAXPAYER,

I can hear the desperation in you post re 911…I’m certainly not in favor of Bush but it is curious all fringe lefties are not hammering some ridiculous comparison of 9.11.01 to 9.11.12..please help me understand why Bush remains relevant and please help me understand how this Benghazi incident (anyone comparing this to Watergate is equally idiotic) compares and contrasts to our shores being attacked…neither case did DC have adequate intelligence to see either coming…just be good if BO would admit he made a communication mistake and leave it at that…if he can..

So what was Hillary doing when she fell on her sword? What would make her step forward like that? You can figure it out. What is so sensitive? How about a middle east where the sectarian and ethnic intersects are suddenly seizing power . In the wash after the video, the cooler heads in that rioting mob may have hired one of many hit-cells. The mob was multi-ethnic and multi-sectarian. The hit cell was one of many multi-ethnic, multisectarian mercenaries available anywhere anytime. And they’re all using the repeater rifles our crooked bankers sold them. The ancient liasons between the tribes in the middle east respect no borders. We don’t know who to arm in the civil wars because the alliances and rivalries are so old and complicated, with double-crossing Kurds mixed in here and there, that the warring factions don’t even know who to shoot at. Imagine an exit strategy for the pro-Persian, anti Kurd, pro Iraqi Shia faction in Libya. I mean. Who do ya trust?

This is the Cheney and the Saudi Royal Family that Ike warned us about. Even if we didn’t need their oil, we’d be drawn in. I wonder how much time we really have left.

Fantastic moniker “sheeple”…mindless followers of 100% of repective party dogma…a comparision to religiosity suggests both are quite evangelical in their tactics…you do gotta admit that the idea that God intended rape is akin to the Taliban prohibiting women from education..

@ georgia, you had me until you thru in Cheney and the Royal Family…But your point is made, to a degree, only that there are NO lasting village liasons….As for repeating rifles, I guess we have to bring in lawrence and the brits, after all they brought weapons too, perhaps not, we’lll stick with bankers and Cheney-they are easier and more contemporary targets..

Garth is a perfect example of the illogical hatred being spouted by those who would pretend to be objective and reasonable. There’s very little chance that Garth has any inside information, yet he, she, it, states with absolute confidence that the situation in Libya is a direct result ofthe incompetence of the President. No one is fooled by this garbage. I suspect the source of all the hatred is pretty simple and it’s very ugly. No need for me to spell it out. You know what it is.

["The deaths in Libya are tragic. The U.S. averages 10 drownings per day. Maybe the republicans will attack water next."] ……………..Is this how you and yours think? Then a serial killer is no different than a police officer. A swimming pool is no different than a terrorist with RPG’s, and other weapons. I mean both cause “death” and who “should worry over that”. And a car accident that results in a death (where the driver had no culpability) is the same as someone “mowing their wife or daughter down with their own car”. I get it….it is moral relativism and to you and those who think like you all deaths are without sin, without guilt and without accountability. Therefore, based on your thinking, prisons should be done away with…..after all those people were only guilty of causing deaths and didn’t “mean it”.

The so-called CIC abandoned his post, cowardly pissant, and good men died, no matter how you slice it. Shame on him forever; he is finished, either way, as are those who support and cover up for him. Why don’t you smirking liberals try your luck on a legitimate news outlet, with a columnist who has a shred of integrity left? Make that a “sincere” shred of integrity.

Fake conspiracy and still blaming the video. You are a joke. Now add sitting on their fanny for 7 hours while watching it live and refusing to send in support. I’m sorry, watching it live is a mistake. Obama went to bed and then jumped on a plane to Vegas, baby!

I have officially told all employees that voted for Obama will be replaced!

It is with great pleasure to let employees go if I find out they voted for Obama. As a private company, I am a “at will” employer. Rupublicans run businesses, democrats are employees.
