Those who push “apology tour” owe us an apology

In the debate Monday night, Mitt Romney once again resorted to his claim that President Obama had conducted an overseas “apology tour,” in which he allegedly traveled “to various nations in the Middle East and criticizing America.” As Obama quickly noted, that claim has been debunked as a fabrication by every fact-check organization that has looked at it.

However, that clearly hasn’t dissuaded the Romney camp from continuing to use the claim. In fact, Jennifer Rubin, a conservative columnist for the Washington Post known for her very tight ties to the Romney campaign, devoted her column Tuesday to explaining why in fact the “apology tour” claim is accurate.

As she writes:

“I am hardly the first to compile lists of apologetic utterances from Obama. These include an apology in front of the Turkish Parliament: ‘Another issue that confronts all democracies as they move to the future is how we deal with the past. The United States is still working through some of our own darker periods in our history.’

That’s an “apology”? I do not see an apology, or anything resembling an apology. Just to confirm the fact, here’s the quotation with a little more context:

“The United States is still working through some of our own darker periods in our history. Facing the Washington Monument that I spoke of is a memorial of Abraham Lincoln, the man who freed those who were enslaved even after Washington led our Revolution. Our country still struggles with the legacies of slavery and segregation, the past treatment of Native Americans.”

Again, no apology, just a simple, humble acknowledgement of historical fact.

But why, you may ask, was Obama even raising those issues before a foreign parliament? In that 2009 speech, the president went on to urge Turkey, a longtime U.S. ally, to try to resolve its longstanding differences with neighboring Armenia. Those differences have at their foundation the mass genocide at Turkish hands of as many as 1.5 million ethnic Armenians beginning in 1915.

As Obama told the Turkish legislators, in words that were controversial in Turkey at the time:

“Each country must work through its past. And reckoning with the past can help us seize a better future. I know there’s strong views in this chamber about the terrible events of 1915. And while there’s been a good deal of commentary about my views, it’s really about how the Turkish and Armenian people deal with the past. And the best way forward for the Turkish and Armenian people is a process that works through the past in a way that is honest, open and constructive.”

I suppose that Obama could have tried a different approach. Instead of acknowledging that America too has made mistakes, Obama could have gone the high and mighty route, broaching the delicate issue of Armenia by telling Turkish leaders that we in the United States have demonstrated ourselves at all times to be paragons of perfection, and that they ought to at least try to follow our pristine example.

Somehow, I doubt that would go over very well.

The Turkish example is interesting for another reason. Echoing the Romney/Rubin theory that it is wrong to ever admit a national mistake, the Turks have made it a major crime under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code to even mention the Armenian genocide in public, with jail terms of as long as three years. That, I suppose, takes care of the apology tour issue, although it is not a productive way for a democracy to conduct its affairs.

Another example of a supposed apology cited by Rubin is even more telling. In 2009, in a televised speech to the American people, Obama announced that, among other steps, he had signed an executive order ending the use of “enhanced interrogation”, more plainly known as torture. As Rubin quotes him:

“Unfortunately, faced with an uncertain threat, our government made a series of hasty decisions. … I also believe that all too often our government made decisions based on fear rather than foresight; that all too often our government trimmed facts and evidence to fit ideological predispositions. Instead of strategically applying our power and our principles, too often we set those principles aside as luxuries that we could no longer afford. And during this season of fear, too many of us — Democrats and Republicans, politicians, journalists, and citizens — fell silent. In other words, we went off course.”

With those words, Obama was attempting to express his disagreement with policies that had been adopted by the Bush administration. But to Rubin, it is something much more sinister.

“Liberals don’t even see that Obama’s excoriating his predecessor is apologizing for this nation, but of course it is. George W. Bush wasn’t acting as a private citizen, and whatever he actions he took were done in the name of the United States.”

Criticizing decisions made by George Bush equates to apologizing for this nation? By trotting out such lame arguments, Rubin succeeds only in confirming just how irresponsible the “apology tour” claim really is.

Apology tour, huh? Perhaps Romney should began on. First he should apologize to all the people’s jobs he “outsourced” to China and India so that he could wear $5K shoes.

Then he needs to apologize to those same people for the way he made THEM the enemy — by calling them the 47%ers and questioning their worth.

Lastly he should apologize for selling his soul for those magic beans — he was too lazy to climb the beanstalk for himself, but he sent his gardener, Jose, to do it for him.

By trotting out such lame arguments

Calling these arguments merely “lame” understates the gravity of the slur against not only our President, but against rational people who use complete sentences and paragraphs to express their thoughts.

but otherwise, Jay, I couldn’t agree with you more. Not holding my breath waiting for that apology which, yes, is owed.

At this point it’s just too easy to pick apart Rubin’s articles. She is as shameless as Hannity or Limbaugh on their worst days, and I can’t understand why the Post continues to publish her. My guess is because she only morphed into a Romney-bot fairly recently, and to let her go at this point without question would be sensationalized in the echo chamber as yet another example of media bias.

Speaking of that, have you all noticed that Fox now has a permanent feature on its homepage called the “Bias Alert?” I don’t watch Fox News Channel too much, but I do go to the website pretty often. Of course it was always Fox, but in the last month or two it’s turned into a such a drunken orgy of self-victimization and paranoia, it would make Nero proud. There’s hardly a shortage, however, of examples of Obama chastising past U.S. foreign policy, so many so that just five months into Obama’s term the Heritage Foundation was able to produce a “Top 10 Apologies” list, starting with the speech in France which Berman quoted.

Among the instances cited by Heritage’s Nile Gardiner and Morgan Lorraine Roach:

- At a Summit of the Americas: “Too often, the United States has not pursued and sustained engagement with our neighbors.”

- Speaking to the Turkish parliament: “The United States is still working through some of our own darker periods in our history.”

- Addressing CIA employees: “Don’t be discouraged that we have to acknowledge potentially we’ve made some mistakes.”

- In a speech at the National Archives: “Instead of strategically applying our power and our principles, too often we set those principles aside as luxuries that we could no longer afford. And during this season of fear, too many of us – Democrats and Republicans, politicians, journalists, and citizens – fell silent.”

- In that same address at the National Archives: “There is also no question that Guantanamo set back the moral authority that is America’s strongest currency in the world. Instead of building a durable framework for the struggle against Al Qaeda that drew upon our deeply held values and traditions, our government was defending positions that undermined the rule of law.”

Headquarters (Axlerod-Plouffe) determined that Benghazi was a firestorm and sent out the daily memo instructing bloggers to whip up anything that could draw attention off Benghazi. If the chosen topic could cast some attention on Romney, then all the better. You see, normally a presidential candidate wants attention, but in the case of Oblunda, just the opposite is true, at least until the Fires of Benghazi are tamed.

Look, we all know what Obama said overseas; and we all know they screwed up in Libya; and we all know that things are not well in the Obama/Biden 2012 effort. And in case you have forgotten the economy: it still stinks. Come November 6th, it will indeed be about the economy.

I’m amazed no on in the media has taken issue with Romney’s remarks in his apology tour salvo at the debate:

“You said that on occasion America had dictated to other nations.

Mr. President, America has not dictated to other nations. We have freed other nations from dictators.”

Can anyone with any knowledge of history or that region say America has not dictated to other nations? We have a history in that region of doing so, and funny thing is, the people over there know it! I can only imagine the reaction if a President Romney had gone there and said “We face troubled times and I know we can work together and improve our relationship, keeping in mind we have never, ever dictated to you what you should do, who your leaders should be, what your culture or institutions should be. America just has never done that and you should be grateful to us.”

Of course, the most likely response from the Right would be ‘why do you hate America?”

Good grief Jay, grow a pair and quit whining. If there is an apology to be issued, it should come from you emotionally led liberals for putting this incompetent in office. Again, when there is an actual newsworthy story, you pivot to non news or just plain nonsense because the truth hightlights more incompetence from this administration. Let’s just say that I’m not at all surprised that you have avoided the biggest news story of the day. On a lighter note, yes, Trump is a self absorbed nutball but how about that offer to obama? Do you think your caring president will withhold 5 million from a worthy charity?

So what some of you are saying is that we need Romney bumbling along on the world stage like he did last summer????

The vast majority of people from almost every single country in the world prefer Obama over Romney.

I said it several days ago, and I will mention it again. The attack in Benghazi will be the down fall of this administration, and it is not right wing propaganda. It is over, Obama is toast, and as more of this story comes out, heads are going to roll. I just hope President Romney continues the investigation. 4 Americans were killed because of the incompetence of this administration.

GW Bush, Senegal, 2003:

“One of the largest migrations of history was also one of the greatest crimes of history. Below the decks, the middle passage was a hot, narrow, sunless nightmare; weeks and months of confinement and abuse and confusion on a strange and lonely sea. The stolen sons and daughters of Africa helped to awaken the conscience of America. The very people traded into slavery helped to set America free. My nation’s journey toward justice has not been easy and it is not over.”

If Obama had said that?

So the cons did everything possible in the last 4 years to wreck the economy in order to blame Obama to kill his chances of reelection. However, as things stand now, he will be reelected.

So when will the cons catch on and realize that wrecking the economy is only hurting our citizens, not Obama.

I guarantee the dems and the indies have already come to this conclusion, and it’s going to be a sad day for the GOP on Nov 6.

I suppose the idea of apologizing for anything this country has done is cause for revulsion to modern American conservatives. Remember how conservatives recoiled, then attacked liberals, when it was suggested that just maybe Pres Bush should apologize for the miscalculations that led to Iraq? So it would seem the vitriol is not just directed at Pres Obama, it’s against anybody who would dare suggest a public acknowledgement by an elected official that our country had, at any time, done something less than honorable towards another country.

That strikes me as a pretty insecure way to think.

Could? You mean “has”, I think.

On the other hand, there was the senior Bush, who as vice president said the following after the U.S. Navy had accidentally shot down an Iranian civilian airliner, killing all 290 aboard:

“I’ll never apologize for the United States of America. Ever. I don’t care what the facts are.”
