As part of his plan to increase defense spending by $2 trillion over the next decade, Mitt Romney has repeatedly cited the factoid that the United States has fewer ships in its Navy today than it did in 1916, suggesting that our naval power has declined since then. He is also campaigning on a pledge to boost the number of ships from 285 to 313. saying “I will restore our Navy to the size needed to fulfill our missions by building 15 ships per year, including three submarines.”
Our current ship-building rate is 9 to 10 per year.
Two points regarding that issue:
1.) As it happens, two political scientists at Florida State University recently completed a historical study that compares naval strength among the major powers from 1865 to 2011. They conclude:
“In 1916, the U.S. controlled roughly 11% of the world’s naval power. This is an impressive number that ranks the US third in naval strength behind the UK (34%) and Germany (19%), and just ahead of France (10%). What about the US navy in 2011? In 2011, the US controlled roughly 50% of the world’s naval power putting it in a comfortable lead in naval power ahead of Russia (11%).”
In Romney’s view, the fact that 4 percent of the world’s population controls a mere 50 percent of the world’s naval firepower, almost five times the amount of the second-ranked power, leaves that 4 percent dangerously vulnerable.
2.) Why is Romney stressing naval expansion in his campaign remarks? Take a look at the map of swing states. Virginia is critical to his election hopes. Virginia is also home to Newport News Shipbuilding, which with 21,000 employees is a major contractor with the U.S. Navy. The additional submarines that Romney keeps mentioning are nuclear-powered Virginia-class subs, built in part at Newport News at a cost of $2.5 billion per copy.
In other words, Romney is dangling billions of taxpayers dollars and government-financed jobs in front of Virginia voters, hoping that it wins him the presidency.

One of the great lessons the North learned during the Wah-uh was the importance of a Navy…they lost the war at sea and it was a mistake the unified nation would rectify and not repeat. The Navy is what propelled the country into the imperialistic age, what made it possible to come out of WWI as not just having pulled Britain’s and France’s chestnuts out of the fire, but established the republic as a, if not the, major world power. The Japanese recognized this and tried to destroy that asap. They failed. The mobility of the warship has continued to be of critical importance in protecting our vital interests around the globe, commercially, militarily and, subsequently, politically.
So, yes, it should be a priority. But as far as numbers are concerned, it ain’t the meat, it’s the motion.

Leftists remain in denial about the real upgrading in the Chinese Navy. There is a growing threat in the Pacific, and even the Vietnamese want a more significant American presence there.
From another view, with a fully-funded Navy, it is possible that we could have placed bodies on the ground during the seven hour al Qaeda attack in Libya on Sept 11 this year, and that those guys who died in the last hour of the fight could have been saved. Leftists prefer to scrimp on security, to distribute taxpayer cash to their donors for pie-in-the-sky green energy proposals.

1. I agree with Granny, Trump needs to be ridiculed. Elections should be about issues, not character assasinations.
2. Jay chides Romney for wanting to increase military spending and some say the DoD shouldn’t be a gov’t program to support the middle class but are completely alright w/ using the Dept. of Education, the EPA, NPR, Planned Parenthood, Dept of Agriculture, or the various “green job” investments to support the middle class and the 1%. Either you are for cutting spending or you are not. What I’m seeing here is the Democrats are completely alright with increased spending, as long as it’s on it’s “pet” projects. Before you call me a hypocrit, I completely think the DoD could use a huge cut, I mean a true cut, (not the liberal version of a cut) a definite reduction in it’s budget. But while we are at it, we can stop meddling in other foreign countries issue….Something Democrats are just as guilty as Republicans in doing!

Jay, you’re article misses the point. Comparing who controls the amount of naval power isn’t the question. It’s who has the ability to control the seas and have force projection. Not every nation needs a navy with the capability of the United States. Consider that our vital interests are overseas whereas Russia’s aren’t and China’s to a lesser extent.
Since the 1930s we’ve maintained a philosophy of a two ocean navy in order to protect those interests. To maintain those interests today we have to have at least 11 carrier battle groups. Consider that not all of these carriers will be available at one time due to upgrades, refits, training, etc.
In Desert Storm (1991) we were able to put 6 carrier battle groups in the Persian Gulf (each battle group contained around 8-12 support ships)….that was half of the carrier fleet at the time. If another conflict had occurred we would have probably been able to deploy two-three carriers at most.
China is acquiring carrier technology and they continue to upgrade their submarine fleet. However, China’s sea mission is more sea-denial than sea-control. They are primarily interested in the SW Pacific. With the development of their cruise missile technology they don’t necessarily have to have a large navy. Just one big enough to deny our navy access to the SW Pacific…or the Middle East. they can always import oil via a pipeline. We can’t.
Russia’s navy has a similar strategy….more sea denial than sea control.
We HAVE to have sea control due to the need to import oil and other natural resources to keep our economy going and to feed our population.
So yes…maintaining our navy is an important security goal and it does require a certain number of the right mix of ships.

Eisenhower warned us to be vigilant against interests of the military-industrial complex — now it has morphed to the industrial-military complex — the military understands the strategy of being light, fast, and powerful — ships cannot get to the scene of terrorism in a matter of hours (unless they happened to be stationed near by). Romney’s strategy will send tax dollars to the corporations instead of the field to support our troops, and at home to support our vets.

Granny here ya go:
Before it was blabbed out by Trumped earlier, here are the top answers to the question, ‘What do you think Trumped’s Obama surprise is?”:
(1) During his many travels, Trump’s private investigator discovered an articulate homeless man named “The Doctor,” who wears a tinfoil hat and claims to have delivered Barack Obama at Port Reitz District Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya in 1961.
(2) Obama is gay married to a Kenyan he met on Easter Island during the filming of “Star Wars, Why The Hell Do We Care About Another Fraking Episode”. They were seen holding hands and cuddling. Close inspection of the man reveals that he looks surprisingly like Karl Rove.
(3) After being repeatedly disproven in his theory that Obama’s birth certificate is a forgery, does Trump give up? No. His private investigator unraveled a convoluted conspiracy amongst the paper and photo editing software editing industries that traces all the way back to Obama.
“Obama has his tentacles in the paper industry and the photoshopping software biz,” Trump will likely tweet. “His wife’s best friend’s uncle owns stock in both Adobe software and the company that produces paper for the ‘Hawaiian hospital’ where Obama was ‘born.’”
But it doesn’t end there. Trump’s P.I. found that the digital photography experts who debunked the “forgery” conspiracy are actually paid shills for the Chinese government and OPEC. And their orders came straight from President Obama, who called up China and said “Get OPEC in on this. I’ll go soft on you guys if you cover up my birth certificate. K thanks, bye.”
(4) Obama is actually the son of communist poet/labor activist Franklin Marshall Davis, who happened to live in Hawaii around the time Obama was born.
But Trump’s private investigator discovered something that DESTROYS this puny little conspiracy: Obama is actually a time traveler who is Frank Marshall Davis’ real father.
(5) Remember when Glenn Beck infamously said that President Obama is a “racist” and “has a deep-seated hatred for white people”?
Trump’s private investigator discovered that it’s actually true. So true that every morning when he wakes up, the president punches himself on the one side he considers his “white half.”
(6) Trump’s private investigator discovered that Bo Obama’s little collar tag says “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet.”

In my day, Sir Jackie Fisher was quite adamant about having an extrodinary navy, I must say came in quite handy for the germany blockade and they had subs!! Well they had to build the ships somewhere and since Newport News is the ONLY shipyard capable of building the new class of carriers ,somewhat makes sense they are manufactured there. The fact that the world’s largest navy base is a few nautical miles away might be important….Hmmmm.. Interesting how the facts might support SOME reality… Yes, yes, good old Jackie, a bit of a cad really, he and winston with there secret planning before the GREAT war (and thank goodness they were doing just that)..

It’s good that the president has learned a bit about aircraft carriers and submarines over the last few years. He evidently hasn’t learned about bayonets in the Army and Marine Corps or that horse soldiers have made a reappearance in our Special Forces. Romney has it right by advocating peace through strength, I haven’t heard Obama really express that same strategy, which has served us well over the years. The DOD is a huge provider of jobs and given our economic weakness with insufficient job growth we certainly need to be concerned with too much of a cut in our military.

List Of Failed Green Energy Jobs & Companies – By Obama
Update: 7/19/12: The Amonix Solar: FAIL! – manufacturing plant in North Las Vegas, subsidized by more than $20 million in federal tax credits and grants given by Obama Administration, has closed its 214,000 square foot facility a year after it opened.
Solar Trust of America: FAIL! – Filed Bankruptcy in Oakland, CA, April 3, 2012
Bright Source: FAIL! – Bright Source warned Obama’s Energy Department officials in March 2011 that delays in approving a $1.6 billion U.S. loan guarantee would embarrass the White House and force the solar-energy company to close. Bright Source lost billions of dollars but is getting more money to keep trying. Can you say, “This isn’t working Mr. President?”
Solyndra: FAIL! – Obama gave $500,000,000 (that’s a HALF BILLION!) in taxpayer money to Solyndra who shut its doors and laid off 1100 workers in August 2011 after billions in losses due to failure to make a solar product that works! Barack Obama was not vetted before being elected President and neither was Solyndra before Mr. Obama threw that taxpayer money down the drain of unproven technology.
LSP Energy: FAIL! – LSPEnergy LP filed bankruptcy protection and a sale of its assets in Feb 2012
Energy Conversion Devices: FAIL! – On February 14, 2012 Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. and its subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy
Abound Solar: FAIL! – Abound Solar received a $400 million loan guarantee from Barack Obama then announced in June, 2012 that it would file for bankruptcy. Many of these failed corporations, such as Abound, donated MILLIONS and continue to donate to Barack Obama’s campaign. Can you say, “Democrat Slush Fund”? Yes this is illegal. But Democrats are being protected from being prosecuted, for now.
SunPower: FAIL! – SunPower stopped producing solar cells in 2011 at near bankruptcy then restructured with the help of, get this, oil giant TOTAL, Inc. who owns 60% stake in SunPower. Irony? The company is still struggling.
Beacon Power: FAIL! – Beacon Power Corp filed for bankruptcy protection in October, 2011 just a year after Obama approved a $43 million Government loan guarantee. They remain barely in business, still struggling to make energy that makes sense or that works at all.
Ecotality: FAIL! – ECOtality, a San Francisco green-tech company that never earned any money and remains on the verge of bankruptcy after receiving roughly $115 million in two loan guarantees from President Obama, who wants to do some more of this kind of Democrat Slush Fund Guarantees after he is elected to a 2nd term.
A123 Solar: FAIL! – A123 Solar received $279 million from taxpayers thanks to President Obama’s Department of Energy loan guarantees even after the Solyndra bankruptcy and is getting another $500M from Obama after a loss of $400M.
UniSolar: FAIL! – Uni-Solar filed for Ch 11 bankruptcy in June 20, 2012 after laying off hundreds of workers. UniSolar received even more Obama money after showing now progress, no profits and is still failing… yet they still remain in business with Obama’s help.
Azure Dynamics: FAIL! – Azure Dynamics filed for bankruptcy in June , 2012 wasting millions in Obama “Stimulus” money and received abatement on taxes owed and and several tax credits. Azure Dynamics LLC filed for bankruptcy protection in Canada and the US. Azure laid off 120 of its 160 employees in Oak Park; Boston; Vancouver, British Columbia; and the UK.
Evergreen Solar: FAIL! – Evergreen Solar received $527 Million in Taxpayer money from Obama and filed bankruptcy in late 2011. Evergreen, which closed its taxpayer-supported Devens factory in March, 2011 cut more than 1800 jobs. Evergreen’s $450 million factory, turned out to be a colossal “waste” of taxpayer money.
Ener1: FAIL! Ener1 Inc. received a $118 million U.S. Energy Department grant from President Obama to make electric-car batteries but filed for bankruptcy protection January 2012 after defaulting on bond debt.

Actually, Utah was an interesting case during the Civil War.The vacating of the area by federal troops left a vacuum and the domestic politics between the Mormon majority, threatening to take the chance to go for independence, and the increasing number of non-Mormons who were mainly out to stay out of the fracas back east…there was a good deal of politicking coming out of it. Remember, the trans continental railroad was a thing at the time and the railroad interests were not real quick to “take sides…” Finally, though, when it was clear that the Union would come out on top, Young organized a militia siding with the Union…
A good read on all this is Twain’s “Roughing It…”

Who exactly were these news organizations that looked into “Obama’s magical apology tour” and proclaimed that it wasn’t that? The answer is the same ones that are still protecting him and his failure right now. You know them Jay. you are one of them. Obama bowed, he apologized and he basically sold out his own country to a world full of socialist and dictatorial nations (UN members) that want us to either be destroyed or to be brought down to their level of desperation. Obama wants so badly for America to be a nation modeled after the socialist pansies in Europe. Europe knows it has “screwed the pooch” with its socialist policies and many of them are bordering on going far, far right because of their leaders socialist stupidity in the past years. And Obama? To this day he just wants to make everybody the same and the cruel reality is that everybody are not the same. Some people try harder than others and some people are smarter than others and as a result some people are wealthier than others. And, some people are just plain lucky. No amount of Government will ever be able to change these things. For Obama and you libs to think that you can change this through Big Government is incredibly arrogant. When the working folks think that they cannot get ahead even if the work hard because their only reward is for the government to give their hard earned money to those that don’t want to work, revolution will occur. The US is headed for revolution now.

Recon, the Army no longer teaches bayonet tactics, at least if you define bayonet in its classic sense as a knife attached to a rifle. The days of bayonet charges in particular are long long long gone, because the increase in firepower makes such massed charges foolhardy in the extreme. A squad of 10 soldiers with modern weaponry could mow down a massed bayonet charge of several hundred.

Okay…so Obama thought 1) Auschwitz-Birkenau was in Poland 2) that there were Polish “death camps 3) that Kansas was Texas 4) that Hawaii is a part of Asia 5) that North America is comprised of more than one continent (”We’re the country that built the Intercontinental Railroad.”) 6) that FedEx and the UPS are federal agencies like the Post Office (”"UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? Nah, the honest, well sometimes honest, well maybe seldom honest Obama wouldn’t do that now would he? As the “Commander in Chief” of our armed forces, I would think he would know the difference between a ship and a boat but once again his ignorance was on display during the debate. Jay, last I heard the Army still issues bayonets and other sharp bladed weapons. Crew served belt fed weapons i.e. machine guns, along with automatic rifles date back even before WWI. The fire power capability then while greatly improved in today’s similar weapons were none the less capable of inflicting the same casualties that you described. Wave assaults can and have in wars past as well as even today can penetrate defensive positions where bayonets or other bladed weapons can be employed and that’s why they’re still issued.

Fred — “Holy crap on a stick JHM, did Ragsie REALLY post that stuff you quoted? Please tell me it isn’t so. NO ONE is THAT stupid are they? The Chinese Navy is only a slightly larger threat than the Swiss navy…………..”
Rags styles himself as a hardcore libertarian and tries to argue that he’s not partisan, but he’s nothing but a big-government conservative statist. He’s said a number of things recently that clearly illuminate him as such.
I’ll give you an example. Rags said to me back in the spring that when Congress met on a weekend to pass that bill forcing Michael Schiavo to stick the feeding tube back in his wife (and President Bush flew back to Washington from vacation to sign it), that was an ‘appropriate use of governmental power.’
Now, I don’t know where you stand on the Terri Schiavo issue, but that’s not the point. Rags, who’s supposedly a *Libertarian,* said that Congress passing a law that affected only ONE SINGLE AMERICAN was an ‘appropriate use of governmental power.’ Uh, sorry, but laws that only affect or enjoin a SINGLE American are, IMO, the absolute worst kind of abusive, corrosive state power.
I pressed Rags on the point, and he said that it was appropriate because ‘the means served a just end.’ IOW, since the law enforced something that he was personally in favor of, he supported it.
That’s not Libertarianism. That’s some kind of really effed-up totalitarian or monarchy bullspit right there.

Now, perhaps you watch a lot of TV cop shows, but reality is you don’t put the “evidence” out there when you are still investigating and have not made an arrest. Just because it does not fit with your jump to conclusions without evidence does not mean that there is a “conspiracy” or that it will help the investigation to counter your perceptions based on FTDs.

Jay, I think your price tag for the subs is a little high; the Navy’s been making adjustments to get the cost below $2 billion each. And it’s worth mentioning that Romney’s call for three new subs a year is an increase of only one per year above the current plan. But those are minor points (as, in response to other posters, are the facts that we don’t need much oil to run our nuclear-powered fleet and that subs are, in fact, boats, not ships).
More important is that historical comparisons to numbers of ships and percentages of global naval power don’t mean anything. We need the candidates to explain their strategy for using naval power, then propose naval forces to carry out that strategy. Romney’s call for a 313-ship Navy doesn’t tell us anything, nor does Obama’s dismissive response about aircraft carriers and subs. A Navy focused strictly on protecting our home waters and the shipping lanes serving us is far different from a Navy that projects power in the eastern Med, the Indian Ocean, East Asia, etc.
I wish we’d gotten that kind of Navy discussion Monday night instead silly comparisons by both candidates to the military a century ago.

It has now come to light that the white house knew while the Benghazi Consulate was under attack that it was, one and attack by organiazed terrorists and two that the terrorists were most likely affiliated with Al Qaeda. One hour away, we had jet fighters with rockets, and laser guided munitions. While the attack raged for more than six hours our government (most likely with the knowledge of the president) observed, watched, talked to the victims, and did nothing. Our government did nothing! Nothing! Sunsequently, Obama knowing full well what had happened, went to a campagn event and began the lies his administration would repeat over and over for the next wo weeks. The only action taken by the administration was to have the poor boob who had made an obscure film, arrested, to draw attention away from the “political damaging” truth of what really happened in Benghazi. Four american died while our government watched and lied about what they saw. Either our president lied about doing nothing, or his adfministration is so incompetent that he didn’t even know what was going on for more than six hours. Take your pick.

Remember when Reagan repeated the populist notion that Panama was a part of the U.S. and was willing to fight to hold on to it. Here’s a refresher course:
“Basically the idea was that Panama was an American state, and that the canal in Panama was an American canal and that there was this massive challenge to American sovereignty represented by the idea that the canal might go back to Panamanian control. And it does – it seems cockamamie when we look back at it. And you know what? Panama’s fine.”
“A lot of people who were even to Reagan’s right – you would have thought they were to Reagan’s right – people like John Wayne, people like William F. Buckley told Reagan that he was nuts for doing this,” she said. With his “fellow travelers,” his ideological peers, “He’s [Reagan] sticking to his guns and making this a hugely combative partisan issue,” said Rachel Maddow in her new book “Drift.” Reagan continued to repeat that the Panama Canal was a U.S. possession and territory — in effect a U.S. canal simply located in Panama. He got a lot of political mileage out of it, repeating it often even knowing it was untrue. Seems Mittens is using tactics from Reagan’s play book.

Before WW II building the biggest and mightiest battleships was where most of the money was spent by the major powers. Luckily our Navy invested in aircraft carriers and someone who knew what was coming down the road put them all out to sea before Pearl Harbor. .Pentagon Defends Buying From Russia Trader Aiding Assad
By Tony Capaccio and David Lerman -
May 9, 2012 The Pentagon says it’s in a bind, with nowhere to turn for helicopters needed by Afghanistan’s air force except Russia, a top arms supplier to Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad.
The U.S. Army has a $375 million contract to buy 21 Russian-made MI-17 helicopters for the Afghans from Rosoboronexport, Russia’s state-run arms trader, Pentagon Undersecretary for Policy James Miller said in a previously undisclosed March 30 letter to a lawmaker opposed to the deal.

Rapid reaction force deployment to Benghazi was within our capability, however, the order would have had to come down from the CnC. Given what we’ve been learning over the last several days that the attack in real time was being reported back to Washington, it’s hard to believe the president wasn’t informed. I’m guessing that he was informed and declined to give a go order for a reaction force in fear there could have been collateral damage that could have produced an issue just before the election. The administration is trying to cover up its failures to provide adequate security and that Obama withheld an order to deploy a reaction force.

Righty — “it was, one and attack by organiazed terrorists and two that the terrorists were most likely affiliated with Al Qaeda. One hour away, we had jet fighters with rockets, and laser guided munitions. While the attack raged for more than six hours our government (most likely with the knowledge of the president) observed, watched, talked to the victims, and did nothing. Our government did nothing! Nothing!”
Let me get this straight.
You’re absolutely convinced that we knew, DURING the attack, that the assault was being conducted by identifiable, known terrorists, possibly al-Qaeda members. Is that right?
You’re also convinced that we should have attacked ASAP with air assets and air-to-ground weaponry. Is that right?
Assuming your answers to both questions are ‘yes,’ did it ever occur to you that an armed incursion into foreign territory was what Congressional Republicans *rebuked* President Obama for in 2011 — when we took part in the NATO operation in Libya? And now you *want* him to do *exactly* what the GOP got upset about?
And did it ever occur to you that the current government of Libya might get upset about us unilaterally invading and conducting an armed assault in a metropolitan area?
Furthermore, do you think that *bombs* are an appropriate weapon to use in a city, where businesses and residences may be in close proximity to the target zone?
I don’t think you’ve thought this through very far, Righty.

Regarding the navy – there was a famous comment by an admiral toward the end of the cold war, “The navy has two kinds of vessels – submarines and targets.” Romney’s plan has no support in the military.
It reminds me of Reagan. By the way why didn’t we just use his Star Wars program to defend Benghazi. Surely, there are some space based lazers that could have done the trick.
When the cons here show the same concern for the Pat Tillman cover up, which lasted two years, they will have some credibility regarding Benghazi. And don’t use a terrorist email claiming credit as your proof that the administration absolutely knew the events at Benghazi.

I’m not applying a “purity test” to him, for one. I have no idea how he conducts his life and/or personal affairs.
For two, *advocating* the coercive use of state power against a *single individual* via the passage of legislation that affects *only* that individual (particularly when that individual is neither guilty or accused of any crime) is demonstrably antithetical to the expressed position of the Libertarian Party, and to libertarian thought and philosophy. I can’t see how anyone claiming to be a libertarian would be in favor of *any* law that affected only a single individual, regardless of what behavior or activity that law compelled or enjoined.
Is that clearer?

Republicans larned in their faith-based science class that a bayonet is better than a hand grenade because the bayonet is sharp and it will cut you. Republicans have earned the right to carry sharp weapons so long as they keep them covered so they don’t poke their buddies with them while crouching in their foxholes. It would not be wise to give them hand grenades since they would likely pull the pin and use it to poke the enemy while discarding the dull round part that has no sharp edge.

Two points Jay,
When will you blog about Obamas putright lie when he said that he never supported a use of force agreement with Iraq ? when in fact it was he who sent Biden to negotiate one. It was also Biden who said that he wasn’t worried about a use of force agreement with Iraq because he was so sure of one that he would bet his vice Presidency on it. so if Obama did not want one why was Biden assuring us that one was coming ?
Why don’t you tell us what a use of force agreement would have accomplished Jay ? Wasn’t it at least 20,000 troops in Iraq after the draw down ? The very thing Obama attacked Romney for wanting ?
Second, now that Obama has educated us on aircraft carriers and subs, wonder where they were when our ambassador and marines were killed in Lybia, as the State Department watched.
Oh and one more point, what exactly is Obama doing when he tells the voters in Michigan and Ohio that he supports keeping the car industry alive and Romney dosent ? Could that be monetary pandering to the tune of major money ?

Matter of fact it was when he was trying to say that Romney supported wanting more troops in country, which is exactly what the Obama administration was negotiating. Like I said Obama lied. He got on Romney about the troops in Iraq. He stated Romney would have them there now. When asked he never admitted that he attempted to negotiate the exact same thing that he accused Romney of supporting.
You and I both know that he tried to get a status of forces agreement that would have kept our troops there. Now he is acting like he didn’t.
Here is your transcript and what Obama tried to do. Bottom line is he accused and then deflected Romneys response. He wanted the exact same thing he said Romney wanted
Point of conversation in which its spoken of,
ROMNEY: Excuse me. It’s a geopolitical foe, and I said in the same — in the same paragraph I said, and Iran is the greatest national security threat we face. Russia does continue to battle us in the U.N. time and time again. I have clear eyes on this. I’m not going to wear rose-colored glasses when it comes to Russia, or Mr. Putin. And I’m certainly not going to say to him, I’ll give you more flexibility after the election. After the election, he’ll get more backbone. Number two, with regards to Iraq, you and I agreed I believe that there should be a status of forces agreement.
(CROSSTALK)
ROMNEY: Oh you didn’t? You didn’t want a status of…
OBAMA: What I would not have had done was left 10,000 troops in Iraq that would tie us down. And that certainly would not help us in the Middle East.
ROMNEY: I’m sorry, you actually — there was a — there was an effort on the part of the president to have a status of forces agreement, and I concurred in that, and said that we should have some number of troops that stayed on. That was something I concurred with…
(CROSSTALK)
OBAMA: Governor…
(CROSSTALK)
ROMNEY: …that your posture. That was my posture as well. You thought it should have been 5,000 troops…
(CROSSTALK)
OBAMA: Governor?
ROMNEY: … I thought there should have been more troops, but you know what? The answer was we got…
(CROSSTALK)
ROMNEY: … no troops through whatsoever.
OBAMA: This was just a few weeks ago that you indicated that we should still have troops in Iraq.
ROMNEY: No, I…
(CROSSTALK)
ROMNEY: …I’m sorry that’s a…
(CROSSTALK)
OBAMA: You — you…
ROMNEY: …that’s a — I indicated…
(CROSSTALK)
OBAMA: …major speech.
(CROSSTALK)
ROMNEY: …I indicated that you failed to put in place a status…
(CROSSTALK)
OBAMA: Governor?
(CROSSTALK)
ROMNEY: …of forces agreement at the end of the conflict that existed.
OBAMA: Governor — here — here’s — here’s one thing…
(CROSSTALK)
OBAMA: …here’s one thing I’ve learned as commander in chief.
(CROSSTALK)
SCHIEFFER: Let him answer…
OBAMA: You’ve got to be clear, both to our allies and our enemies, about where you stand and what you mean. You just gave a speech a few weeks ago in which you said we should still have troops in Iraq. That is not a recipe for making sure that we are taking advantage of the opportunities and meeting the challenges of the Middle East.
Now, it is absolutely true that we cannot just meet these challenges militarily. And so what I’ve done throughout my presidency and will continue to do is, number one, make sure that these countries are supporting our counterterrorism efforts.

It is not my responsibiliity to provide you with a transcript that says what you want it to say. As I said, my recollection is that Obama made no such denial, and the transcript substantiates my recollection. I think what happened is that Obama wanted to talk about Romney’s recent speech, and Romney wanted to talk about the status of forces agreement, and neither man addressed the other’s argument. That’s what happened in “crosstalk.”
But again, Obama did not say what you claim. If you can provide evidence otherwise, then we’ll talk about that.

We all know what Obama wanted, what he sent Biden to negotiate and what he would have agreed to, on troop presence in Iraq had Iraq agreed to drop the jurisdictional issue over our troops.
He turned against the entire plan when Romney came out in support of it.
The fact should also be apparent that if there was crosstalk Obama was talking. Which means Obamas responses were audible on TV if you paid attention.

Since Kam wasn’t looking too hot in his speedos he was then beset by a pack of killer whales who mistook him for a bloated old nonsperm whale. I had to pull him outta that too. In the end he was ok but quite distraught. He hired keep up the sorry fight to file suit against the orca pod as well as the frenzied sharks. He is also suing me since he says I didn’t get there in time and he suffered a bite out of his old fat ass. Since the incident occurred 4700 nautical miles off the coast of wealthy Malibu, CA. he is also suing that municipality for not properly protecting its share of beachfront which Kam says in his suit should extend to the trench. In anticipation of generous winnings kam plans to match Joe Biden’s generous $1,000 a year in charitable givings. He is going to donate to the woman who got set on fire by the kkk relief fund.

BAGHDAD — Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. arrived here on Tuesday for a visit meant to inaugurate a new relationship between the United States and Iraq, just weeks before the last American troops are scheduled to leave the country.

Landing after nightfall in a military transport plane, a mode of arrival that American officials hope will soon seem like a relic of a distant era, Mr. Biden came with an agenda that included new areas of cooperation in trade and diplomacy, as well as traditional security concerns.
Mr. Biden’s unannounced trip to Iraq is laden with symbolism — a farewell to arms, but also a call for two countries linked by bloodshed to begin dealing with each other in the normal language of diplomacy.
His agenda includes obligatory meetings with Iraqi officials and the U.S.-Iraq Higher Coordinating Committee, a panel set up to steer the relationship; Mr. Biden will lead the committee meeting on Wednesday, along with Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki.
But it is the pageantry of the visit that will capture the most attention. On behalf of President Obama, Mr. Biden is scheduled to take part in a solemn ceremony thanking American service members for their sacrifices and saluting the Iraqi troops now responsible for safeguarding their nation’s security.
“It’s good to be back for this purpose,” Mr. Biden said to reporters before a briefing from the American ambassador, James F. Jeffrey, and the military commander, Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III. The visit is Mr. Biden’s seventh as vice president and 16th over all; he said General Austin had told him that by now he was eligible for Iraqi citizenship.
It is also a personal coda of sorts. Mr. Biden has staked out a position as an influential voice on Iraq policy, cultivating close relationships with Iraqi political leaders. He developed a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of Iraq’s tribal politics and speaks with relish about its tangled feuds and rivalries.
Mr. Obama handed Mr. Biden the Iraq portfolio in early 2009, a move that raised eyebrows because Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton seemed the more obvious candidate for the assignment. At that time, Mr. Biden’s son Joseph R. Biden III, known as Beau, was serving in Iraq with the Delaware National Guard.
Mr. Biden will confront a number of politically volatile issues while he is here. Exxon recently signed an oil-exploration deal with the Kurdish authorities in northern Iraq that enraged the central government, which has threatened to impose sanctions against it. Officials said the Obama administration was irritated by Exxon’s haste in making the deal, but did not interfere with the negotiations.
There are also renewed worries that Iran will try to destabilize Iraq after the Americans leave — a threat that administration officials acknowledge, though they argue that few Iraqis, Sunni or Shiite, have any desire to be dominated by their neighbor.
Fears about security have risen in recent days after a series of insurgent attacks left about 50 people dead in Baghdad, Basra and elsewhere. On Monday, a taxi loaded with explosives blew up in front of a prison here, killing at least 13 people. Ambassador Jeffrey said on Sunday that there was a “good possibility” that two other recent bombings had been carried out by Al Qaeda in Iraq.
Mr. Biden’s itinerary is cloaked in heavy security. Only his later stops in Turkey and Greece were announced ahead of time. In Turkey, the vice president is expected to discuss Iraq, officials said, and the upheaval in neighboring Syria. In Greece, he is likely to offer solidarity, if not any fresh American aid, to help the Greeks stabilize their public finances.
After the final troop withdrawals announced by the president last month are complete, only a vestigial presence of American military liaison officers, embassy guards and security contractors will be left, most of them working at the embassy complex on the banks of the Tigris River.
It is not quite the fade-out the administration had planned for: the Pentagon wanted to leave a residual force of 3,000 to 5,000 troops after 2011 to help train Iraqi soldiers. But when the two sides were unable to work out an agreement to guarantee American troops legal immunity in Iraq, the administration refused to commit to an extended deployment.
For Mr. Maliki, the political imperative of ending what many view as an American occupation apparently outweighed any security benefits of leaving a residual force in place. For Mr. Obama, the image of soldiers leaving Iraq is politically resonant, fulfilling a pledge he made as a candidate in 2008 to end the war.
Next year, after the withdrawal is complete, officials said, the United States and Iraq are likely to resume negotiations for a small American force that would train Iraqi officers, manage border tensions with the Kurds and help with counterterrorism.
Indeed, the basic theme of Mr. Biden’s visit is that the United States is not leaving Iraq behind. In addition to a diplomatic presence here, America will maintain a military footprint throughout the Persian Gulf region.
This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:
Correction: November 29, 2011
An earlier version of this article incorrectly described remarks by Ambassador James F. Jeffrey, the American ambassador to Iraq. Mr. Jeffrey said on Sunday that there was a “good possibility” that two recent bombings had been carried out by Al Qaeda in Iraq. He was not referring to a bomb that exploded outside a prison on Monday.

Mitt Romney has a former Navy chief on his advisory staff, a relic from the Reagan administration. The plan is to retire and replace seven nuclear aircraft carriers. Warfare and National security have changed dramatically since Reagan’s term in office. Maybe Mitt needs to rethink his position.

Romney issued the ship strength position statement 6 days before the debate, giving the high school led Obama campaign ample time to generate a “zinger.” Romney held Obama’s hand as the former community organizer cut his own throat in the debate, plunging it mortally deep in tune with Barry’s condescending retort. Virginia, oh how we LOVE YA! Note to Barry: Don’t challenge a chess master when all you’ve accomplished to date is winning neighborhood checkers matches. Interestingly enough, Mr. President has directed Defense Contractors (required by the WARN act to tell their employees that the current budget requires them to layoff employees Jan. 1) to illegally ignore the law, and assured these companies that Taxpayers will pickup the tab for any resulting litigation. Carney: ‘Everyone’ Knew About Terrorist Claims ‘Instantaneously’
Today, at the White House press gaggle, Jay Carney was asked one – really, just one – question about the emails regarding the terrorist attack in Benghazi. Those emails, to refresh, showed that within two hours of the attacks, the White House had been informed that the action on the ground was a terrorist attack. There was no mention of a YouTube video or a spontaneous demonstration in the emails.
Carney acknowledged today not only that the White House knew, but that it knew “instantaneously”:
The email you’re referring to was an open-source, unclassified email referring to an assertion made on a social media site that everyone in this room had access to and knew about instantaneously.
Instantaneously. Yet the Obama administration claimed for weeks that they were giving Americans the best available information.

The 20-year-old Brazilian woman has been auctioning off her virginity online for the past few weeks and a man from Japan known as “Natsu” came out on top with the winning bid. Natsu beat out five other bidders after a feverish final day where the price of Migliorini’s virtue jumped from $190,000 on Oct. 23 to the final $780,000 price tag. The news wasn’t so good for her male counterpart, Alex Stepanov, whose virginity only racked up $3,000 from a woman in Brazil named “Nene B.”

“I was persuaded by feminist attorneys to lie; to say that I was raped, and needed an abortion. It was all a lie.

Doomy, I remember those days! As for now, Ryan said he wanted to outlaw birth control! He is a radical Catholic. And I can say that because I WAS a Catholic. Romney has been quoted saying he would defund Planned Parenthood & sign a law overturning Roe v Wade. And I REMEMBER coming up against laws which ruled that I could not get a bank account or a credit card without my husband’s “permission.” I also remember, very vividly, being sexually harassed at a bus stop in Seattle. I was young & cute, wearing my flight attendant uniform. Some young men pulled up to the light & started making really nasty comments. A couple of older women were waiting with me. To this day, some 50 years later, I cannot forgive those women for not sticking up for me, for not protecting me. Nor can I forgive & forget that those young men considered me fair game. Doomy, do you really want your wife/daughters to experience that? My greatest fear is that Romney/Ryan will take women back to that.

Mitt doesn’t have a clue. To hell with his Navy expansion. The next war is not going to be with ground forces or navy vessels. Obama is smart enough to see that is not where we need to be spending money and putting our efforts into. Obama just sends the unmanned drones to do the battles. And the next major conflict will be when the internet is taken down by some of the foreign hackers. Once the internet goes down, the crippling effect will make the planes that hit the world trade center not seem so devastating.

Read an interesting take on Romney’s ‘performance’ in Monday’s debate. The point being made is that Romney’s essentially agreeing to become a Trojan Horse in order to get into the White House. Come across now as a reasonable, thoughtful candidate – even though it’s about as last minute as you can get, but given the attention span of most voters, it may not matter. Fact is the neocons are still running foreign policy for the Republican Party and those SOBs won’t rest until they’ve used American soldiers to effect regime change throughout the Middle East. The chicken hawks seem to have a sadistic streak that they can’t satiate. If Romney gets in there we’ll be sending our men and women into battle – to be killed and/or maimed – all in the name of American Exceptionalism…at least their definition of it.

I have never, ever seen a President behave as Obama – rude, crass, not Presidential at all during these debates. He might wish to learn a bit more about the military himself – bayonets are still used today – hah!! And yes, those “aircraft” carriers are indeed “ships.” Most importantly, I am thoroughly ashamed of the fact that our Ambassador and other Americans asked for MORE SECURITY prior to the 9/11/2012 Benghazi situation – were turned down. IT DOESN’t take a rocket scientist to figure out we needed to immensely beef up Benghazi embassy due to the fact that a) we helped to overturn the government b) Libyans who guard the outside of the embassy can be (and were infiltrated), and c) we were approaching 9/11. Sound like Hillary & Obama were doing their jobs enough to protect our Americans there??? I don’t want anyone this stupid running our country. Further, their intentional/deceitful lies are enough – DO WE REALLY WANT THESE LIARS TO CONTINUE ANOTHER 4 YEARS??? THEY DROPPED THE BALL ON THIS BIG TIME AND THEN TRIED TO COVER IT UP!!!! Four Americans are dead for absolutely no reason…….except our Leaders’ stupidity…..
Further – why do you believe OBAMADRAMA is being so crass, and extremely brazen? He just keeps talking bad about Romney in truly crass, hateful ways and what he will do for our country…WELL WHY HASN’T HE DONE IT???????????????????????

Most of America says that it makes perfect sense to do what it takes to protect our soil, interest abroad while expanding freedom throughout the world. This is why we will thankfully have a President Romney come this January. You libs just need to give it up and accept the fact that King Hussein Obama’s socialistic expansion experiment has failed; will become a blip in world history (thankfully be forgotten) and will be quickly erased in late January 2013 by President Romney and Vice President Ryan.
I think the larger question will be: How should President Romney prosecute Hussein Obama and his administration. I suggest that they all be escorted to Gitmo, be quickly tried for their crimes including and not limited to Ca$h for Clunkers, Fannie/Freddie & Solyndra failures, Fast & Furious and now the Benghazi debacle (that is the Grand Poobah of all of this fool’s incompetence). I’m serious that this “administration” needs to be held accountable for destroying so many lives.

Morning all –
A while back the topic was whether or not the Catholic Church had to provide birth control under health care to employees of businesses. I made the point to those who said ‘no’ that that would lead to any business owner who objected to anything having to do with health care under Obamacare from having an exemption.
I was pretty much told that wouldn’t be possible (well, that’s for the cons who disagreed and didn’t divert or ignore).
Well, guess what? “Hobby Lobby, an arts and crafts retailer founded by evangelical Christians, sued the Obama administration on Wednesday to stop a mandate under the federal healthcare reform law to provide drugs such as the morning-after pill to employees through their health insurance.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in the Western District of Oklahoma, seeks a permanent injunction against the government on behalf of Hobby Lobby and other companies that have religious convictions against abortion.
“These abortion-causing drugs go against our faith,” said David Green, founder and chief executive officer of Hobby Lobby Stores Inc, in a call with reporters. “We simply cannot abandon our religious beliefs to comply with this mandate.”
http://www.newsmax.com/US/hobby-lobby-sues-obamacare/2012/09/13/id/451695
The owners also object to related education and counseling.
I’d also noted if that occurred, why not expect the owners of businesses who objected to, say, cancer treatment or other fatal-disease treatment, hospice care, etc to seek relief because their personal religious belief is that such things intefere with God’s will? After all, it’s a personal religious belief so no one has the right to judge if it’s valid or not -

Just before Reagan espoused his 600 ship Navy, my shipmates and I were working our tails off to meet sailing commitments and regular ship maintenance. For example, I was stationed on a destroyer that had a crew requirement of 265 souls. We were doing the job with 155 crew members. It meant wearing many different hats and 21 hour days on the average. We wondered if all those extra ships were going to be automated. I’m wondering the same thing now. I’m also wondering how this is going to fix the deficit? Will all of us old folks taken off of Medicare and Social Security be allowed to crew Romney’s Navy? I bet we would be glad to sail for just food and meds. I bet that’s his plan…yeah, that’s the ticket…

Pentagon spending is out of control when compared to the rest of the world. I did a little research when Rick Perry was talking about the Texas Miracle and found that in addition to being an energy rich state Texas is home to 15,500 defense contractor who received over $350,000,000 in government contracts from 2001-2011. This makes the Texas Miracle a little more understandable.
If the U.S. debt/deficit issue is to be intelligently addressed, everything has to be on the table — including defense cuts and increased revenues. To do otherwise is to perpetrate an additional fraud on the American peoiple. But since the vandals that took office with the Tea Party onslaught of 2010 signed the Grover Norquist pledge, we know how this story is going to turn out regardless of who wins the election.

Someone called Obama disingenuous last night on an interview representing Romney, think it was Trump. I started thinking they must do polls in that GOP camps and find out what bad things people are hanging on Romney and then send their missionaries out into the campaign describing Obama as the very same negative the polls hang on Romney, as if they can rub their smell off on him. And it seems to sick sometimes. You see an army of young lady spokesmen representing the Romney camp very aggressively with the exact same rhythm of conversation and talking points, never breathing as they machine gun it out.
Disingenuous is the word women better be thinking of Romney in this election. He is not a moderate he is a mouthpiece of whatever wind is blowing that day. He does not have the backbone to stand up against the tea party for women’s rights, it is too easy to join the men’s club he now plays in. He has no dog in the women’s hunt, he has sons, his wife is a kept woman who tries to intimidate you into not calling her that. He and a common waitress have nothing in common. The economy is going to get better no matter who is president next term, it is heading that way now like it was heading down at the end of the Bush administration. No one could save it then and no one can stop it from recovery now, it is the women that will be irrevocably harmed if Republicans are elected, they have done it before, have a track record for it, so be fairly warn.

GT: I started thinking they must do polls in that GOP camps and find out what bad things people are hanging on Romney and then send their missionaries out into the campaign describing Obama as the very same negative the polls hang on Romney, as if they can rub their smell off on him.

Disingenuous is the word women better be thinking of Romney in this election.
Another example of the extreme telling/preaching/demanding how folks should think and act. When you cannot articulate and build consensus around a strategy- simply (try to) demand.

No problem. I did say that I am not a very religious person but I am spiritual. I grew up in a praying family with several ministers and women that were devoted to God. Their prayers and God’s grace is probably why I have survived over the years. I can not quote scripture, feel bad that I do not have a regular place of worship; just know what is morally right and wrong. I can say that Psalms 24 keeps me grounded!

“The economy is going to get better no matter who is president next term, it is heading that way now like it was heading down at the end of the Bush administration”
The Democrats are already setting the stage to take credit for the Romney recovery that is sure to take place. The economy is beginning to slightly improve as the business community begins to believe Romney will replace the economicly challeneged Obama just as the economy began to worsen when it was apparent Obama was to be the next president. Less than two weeks from now, the stench we have suffered with over the last four years is removed once and for all. Marxism, Communism, Socialism, Nazism, Obamaism all piled on the ash heap of historical economic failures.

Going from Powell’s statement, “I think there are some very, very strong neo-conservative views that are presented by the governor that I have some trouble with,”, I think most anybody should question Romney’s foreign policy advisors. Powell’s had personal dealing with the neo-conservatives, and has the battle scars to prove it. If he has trouble with it, I would think there’s something bad underneath the surface.

Adam totally dead on. The right all sound like union organizers, thugs daring you to think anything but what they think. They spin the augment with “what America does not want” leading into every thing they the GOP do want. They are telling you what you should think and if you don’t you are out of touch. Then they will tell you even after a tape of the exact quote, that is not what he was saying, when they are caught with their pants down. It’s you with a hearing problem not Romney being a flip flopper, he never flip flopped, he never wrote that Detroit should go bankrupt, you misread it. That’s the man I want protected me in Washington, he doesn’t even know his own mind more less little me. That is the straight talk of a teenager coming in late facing his parents not the character of a man this country is seriously thinking about for its president. It is like the Alex Hawkins story on steroids,” that is my story and I am sticking with it”.

Here is a friendly piece of advice. If you want to get ahead in your work place, don’t let people known you are a Democrat or that you did or will vote for Obama. Your superiors will think you are stupid and it will limit your future. The exceptions would be tort attorneys, labor union members and certain whose political affiliations are well known.

Why doesn’t he just give the five million anyway, why does it have to come with strings. What else is he going to do with it may sex films, with those floozies they runs for Miss America? “quote, that is not what he was saying, when they are caught with their pants down. It’s you with a hearing problem not Romney being a flip flopper, he never flip flopped, he never wrote that Detroit should go bankrupt, you misread it”
As usual, mis quoted, out of context, mis leading and ignorant of the facts. One Obama forced GM and Chrysler to file bankruptcy which they did. That was not a bad thing. It had to be done to save some of the thousands of jobs that would have been lost had they gone out of business. In the process thousnds of jobs were lost, sacrificed if you will to save the ones which were left. In fact, far more jobs were lost as a result of the Obama imposed bankruptcy than Bain Capital ever lost. So when Romney said to let them file bankruptcy, it was what exactly what Obama did that Obama now brags about with out mentioning the word Bankruptcy. When Romney called him on it during the debate. Obama then lied that Romney had never said the government should step in and help. When called on it he continued to lie. Since then the Obama lies have been exposed mnumerous times. The bankruptcy of both GM and Chysler cost thousands of jobs which Obama ignores when he takes credit for saving the auto companies for example more than 1000 Chrysler Dealerships were closed costing tens of thousands of those workers to lose their jobs, health insurance, etc. Funny how Obama wants credit for the few jobs he saved while ignoring the jobs his action lost. Then his supporter come along with their own lies repeating the BS put out by the Obama campaign thinking they are being witty. Wrong! While we are on this subject it is insructive to mention that thestate of Michigan is now a toss up moving from soid Obma to even in the latest poll. Speaking of flip flops, Obama has flip flopped more times in the last month just on Benghazi than Romney has since he was governor of Massachusetts.

As a protestant I have never seen a list of cults. Can you please cite your information source. I have heard that the Obama administration has lists of potential terorists which includes evangelicals and other scary right wing groups like tea party members, but I have never heard of a list of cults. He even has a list of terrorists he personaly wants to kill and checks them off as he bombs them and their neighbors. He then checks off his kills. I don’t know if he keeps a list of their dead neighbors.

David testifies, The earth is the Lord’s and the fulness thereof, he who has clean hands and a pure heart will ascend unto the hill of the Lord, and the Lord of Hosts is the King of Glory.
A Psalm of David. 1 The aearth is the bLord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.
3 Who shall aascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his bholy place?
4 He that hath aclean bhands, and a cpure dheart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto evanity, nor fsworn gdeceitfully.
5 He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, aO Jacob. Selah.
7 aLift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall bcome in.
8 Who is this aKing of bglory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

So rightwingextreme wants our country to be thalassocratic. That is a good word for what he is advising, but he actually has no idea what it means, so he can look it up if he can find it in a dictionary.
Our present Navy has the power in one ship to out gun the whole fleet in 1916.
rightwingextreme says that the Chinese are not acquiring carrier technology. That is absolutely correct, the have ONE carrier and it is a left over, a ship dumped by the Russian Navy, that was old and outdated. It probably is not as large as our LHAs or or LPHs, neither much larger than a WWII carrier like Yorktown and those ships are not in the list of carriers, they are in the list of amphibious ships, the LHA carries jets, the LPH carry assault helicopters, both of the carry a myriad of Marines and their equipment and both have large hospital capacity to take care of wounded.
If we need ships, we can build them pretty quickly without the cost overruns and the delays in getting the ships on line today. In the early 1940s we built over 6000 ships in only four years. Necessity is the mother of invention. Some of those ships are still in use somewhere.
Ships sitting in port awaiting the money to man them and to supply them are worthless. That was a problem with the Cold War Russian fleet, they could nto afford to put them to sea. A full blown carrier has 4000+ men aboard and the amphibious assault carriers have about 3000. That means a large payroll and a lot of food and other supplies to keep them afloat. This would mean a massive buildup in both the Marine Corp and the Navy. Where in the devil is that money to come from, the top 1% income group certainly does not want to pay for it.
There is a very valid argument today that we don’t even need carriers. They, like the battleships of old, are about to be burdensom behemoths that can be destroyed with one missile of a type that even Iran has.
I have been on a ship for a year that was underway virtually all the time. We had precious little liberty and could seldom even get off the ship. That ain’t fun. But if you want a Navy big enough to cover the entire globe within 24 hours, that is what the life of those sailors will be.
