Tracing the local origins of the vote-fraud myth

Those who have followed Fulton County politics for a long time will recognize the name Hans von Spakovsky. Back in the ’90s, as a local lawyer active in Republican circles, he started raising allegations of serious voting fraud that somehow never quite seemed to pan out.

Hans von Spakovsky

Hans von Spakovsky

Apparently, however, somebody somewhere recognized that the fraud allegation itself, even if merely a myth never bolstered by evidence, would be useful in justifying a push for more restrictive ballot laws that might tamp down Democratic turnout. It allowed von Spakovsky to take his schtick national, in time nailing a job in the voting rights section of the Bush Justice Department in which he tried — vainly, despite all the resources of the federal government — to establish that in-person vote fraud posed a clear and present danger to American democracy.

It might be too much to say that von Spakovsky singlehandedly created the mythology of voter fraud, but it clearly created him, serving as a hobbyhorse that he rode to prominence in conservative circles.

Jane Mayer, writing in the current New Yorker, tells his story well, along the way documenting multiple examples in which cases of in-person voting fraud cited by von Spakovsky seem to melt away like desert mirages upon closer inspection. His career is a great example of the power, and the danger, of a useful lie.

ADDENDUM: While we’re on the general topic, it might be useful to try to squelch early, fringe stirrings on the left alleging a conservative conspiracy to fix voting machines in Ohio. As the theory is spun at Truthout.org:

“Through a closely held equity fund called Solamere, Mitt Romney and his wife, son and brother are major investors in an investment firm called H.I.G. Capital. H.I.G. in turn holds a majority share and three out of five board members in Hart Intercivic, a company that owns the notoriously faulty electronic voting machines that will count the ballots in swing state Ohio November 7. Hart machines will also be used elsewhere in the United States.

In other words, a candidate for the presidency of the United States, and his brother, wife and son, have a straight-line financial interest in the voting machines that could decide this fall’s election. These machines cannot be monitored by the public. But they will help decide who “owns” the White House.

The claim is nonsense and without backing in fact. If you’re going to make charges or even raise suspicions of that grave nature, you need much more than a knee-bone-connected-to-the-thigh-bone argument of the sort offered here.

Otherwise, you’re no better than the von Spakovskys of the world.

A recent national survey sponsored by the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law reveals that millions of American citizens do not have readily available documentary proof of citizenship. Many more primarily women do not have proof of citizenship with their current name. The survey also showed that millions of American citizens do not have government-issued photo identification, such as a drivers license or passport. Finally, the survey demonstrated that certain groups primarily poor, elderly, and minority citizens are less likely to possess these forms of documentation than the general population

I always wondered why there never was a criminal prosecution of von Spakovsky for violation of Federal voting rights laws. It seems called for. As well a criminal investigation into Reince Preibus and any other high ranking Republican for possible conspiracy to violate voting rights laws through their bogus voter suppression campaign. These guys at best look upon elections as just a game to play dirty tricks with. At worst they are criminally subverting our Constitution, laws and government. Just well-dressed thugs like Nixon and his Watergate gang. Many of them went to the slammer; the same should be done now.

Eighteen percent of American citizens age 65 and above do not have current government-issued photo ID. Using 2005 census estimates, this amounts to more than 6 million senior citizens.

“It has been shown already that voter fraud occurs on a much larger scale via absentee ballots, yet the laws are NOT being changed for absentee ballots…If those making the laws were truthfully concerned about voter fraud, they would go after the larger amount of fraud. However, going after the in-person voter ID route shows that they are after one thing: making it harder to vote for a percentage of a population that may trend democratic.”

Yeah…the “conversation” on both sides of the isle is about voter IDs and not about registration fraud (which then can lead to so-called “in-person” voter fraud) and fraud related to absentee ballots. Can you point me to any Democrats pushing for legislation to prevent illegal immigrant voting?

Debates deliver favorability edge to Romney; now above 50% in rating

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Mitt Romney crossed a major threshold early this week, moving above 50 percent in his favorability rating with voters, according to the Real Clear Politics average of polls — and for the first time in the campaign he now leads President Obama on that measure.

The Republican presidential nominee has clearly benefited from the debates. He had a 44.5 percent favorability rating at the end of September, before the debates. But by Monday, when he and Mr. Obama faced off for the final debate of the campaign, Mr. Romney’s favorability average was up to 50.5 percent.

Tom Jensen, director of Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm, said Mr. Romney’s favorability surge “really has been remarkable.”

I’ve made the suggestion of switching to biometric registration. Since most places are using touch screen electronic voting, I don’t think it would be much of a stretch to add a fingerprint capture mechanism on the actual machine to verify the person voting as someone who’s registered to vote.

Uh, no! You’re familiar with those federal Smart Cards, right Brocepheus? To get one, your fingerprints have to be on file. Well, toward the end of my career, I had to get a new Smart Card password. Part of the requirements for getting a new password is to press your right index finger against the glass so that the computer can read your fingerprint. The computer didn’t recognize mine, and that triggered a prolonged nightmare.

I don’t want any voter to be subjected to that kind of screw-up. It might be just one vote, but it’s an important vote to the person who has it.

Throw in SEIU and the usual union thug intimidators and you have the Dem strategy to victory. They simply can’t get there by extolling their socialist principles.

Just look at O’bozo’s home town of Chicago. Cemeteries are precincts.

Walking around money? Dems pay bums a pack of cigs and a pint of vodka to vote for their pinko of their choice. See Florida, 2000.

“A new advertisement featuring Christian evangelist Billy Graham began running in newspapers across the country today, encouraging voters to cast their ballots this November for candidates who “support the biblical definition of marriage between a man and a woman.”

The full-page ad, which ran in USA Today and The Wall Street Journal today and will run in other publications prior to Election Day, is signed by Graham and reads:

‘The legacy we leave behind for our children, grandchildren and this great nation is critical. As I approach my 94th birthday, I realize this election could be my last. I believe it is vitally important that we cast our ballots for candidates who base their decisions on biblical principles and support the nation of Israel. I urge you to vote for those who protect the sanctity of life and support the biblical definition of marriage between a man and a woman. Vote for biblical values this November 6, and pray with me that America will remain one nation under God.’ ”

The Graham family has done a lot of good things for a lot of people around the world for many years. For that they should be commended and recognized.

With that said, I find it strange that last week, just one week after meeting with Romney, Billy and Franklin took the Mormons of of their “cult” list.

If their faith leads them to believe that Mormonism is a cult, why would that change now? Because a Mormon won the Republican primary and could possibly be the next President? Is that faith or political maneuvering?

From what I have read and observed, Billy still meets with and prays with all the Presidential candidates and Presidents (if I am not mistaken). Billy seemed to back off on the outward political affiliations and endorsements after being caught talking about the “Jewish owned and run media” during the Nixon days.

Seems Franklin is more into the political arena, at least in an outward sense.

Again they have done some great things. On one hand, it is a good thing they no longer view Mormonism as a cult. On the other, the timing is dubious at best that they just recently “saw the light”.

Maybe they met with leaders of the Mormon Church and it wasn’t advertised. I would hope that is the case and their mind wasn’t just changed because of Romney. That would lead me to think it was more political than faith driven.

To each their own, but I find it a strange.

Jesus and politics:

“31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. (King) Herod wants to kill you.”

32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’ 33 In any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day — for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!”

I may wind up doing third party or just leave it blank…since the electoral vote for Georgia is already in the bag…but, I must admit, Obama’s finally coming around on gay marriage is a good reason to vote FOR him…

” Can you point me to any Democrats pushing for legislation to prevent illegal immigrant voting?”

If you can point me to any evidence that “Illegal” immigrants are voting.

Even one of O’bozo’s house organs has to face issues…

Mitt Romney eked out bragging rights in the latest ABC News/Washington Post tracking poll, claiming 49 percent support among likely voters vs. Barack Obama’s 48 percent – Romney’s first numerical edge, however slight, since before the party conventions.”

They BOTH suck

As I have stated before. I think Obama overall is mediocre. Even being dealt a bad had, he certainly has made his share of mistakes.

Romney on the other hand imo, would be the Republican House’s whipping boy.

Wish we had better choices, but we don’t. At least in terms of the two major parties.

“A new advertisement featuring Christian evangelist Billy Graham began running in newspapers across the country today, encouraging voters to cast their ballots this November for candidates who “support the biblical definition of marriage between a man and a woman.”

Well yeah, that would be Mitt for sure. Abraham had one wife and one concubine, Jacob had two wives, Moses three, David multiples and who can forget about Solomon?

BADA BING (imagine an umlaut above the i, I'm trying to class this place up a little)

Every system can be beat, paper ballots, electronic voting, etc. If Man designed it, Man can defeat it. Your comp can be hacked, Atms can be fooled. People do it for money and just because they like to beat the system. Someone said on here that cheaters never win, like Lance. But he did win, he won 7 times, and now he has been disgraced. But what did he gain? Years of celebrity, famous friends and girlfriends, endorsements, money, travel. Would you trade a little disgrace for all that? Anyone would.

Votes “values” over economics, foreign policy or politics and in the end the country will be better off.

To a great extent, it’s the known versus the unknown…the Republicans have been unable to rein in their lunatics…and in a choice between the two, I’ll go for centrist mediocrity over rightist virulent antagonim…

They BOTH suck

As George Will said last election, Republicans think they have some monopoly on values. People do vote “values”, their own………….

And George Will is no Obama man

“GIVE ‘EM COLD STEEL !”

“British forces in Afghanistan have used bayonets on numerous occasions. In 2009, Lieutenant James Adamson, aged 24, of the Royal Regiment of Scotland was awarded the Military Cross for a bayonet charge whilst on a tour of duty in Afghanistan: after shooting one Taliban fighter dead Adamson had run out of ammunition when another enemy appeared. Adamson immediately charged the second Taliban fighter and bayoneted him.[37] In September 2012, Lance Corporal Sean Jones of The Princess of Wales’s Regiment was awarded the Military Cross for his role in a bayonet charge which took place in October 2011.[38]”
