A civil rights icon does it Gangnam style

A brief note of introduction:

“Gangnam” is a district of Seoul, South Korea. PSY is a South Korean rapper/video star — think of a cross of MC Hammer with Pee Wee Herman — from the Gangnam district. “Gangnam Style” is PSY’s worldwide viral dance video hit, viewed more than 500 million times on Youtube so far. (Original here.)

With that as background, here’s a video put together by the Asian American Legal Advocacy Center here in Atlanta, urging people to register and vote. You may recognize some of the settings — the state Capitol, the MLK silhouette on Freedom Parkway. You may also recognize the older voting-rights champion who gamely dances Gangnam-style to get his message across.

Whatever you think of his politics, you have to admire a politician who doesn’t take himself too seriously. Personally, I would pay a lot to see Barack Obama and Mitt Romney in a dance-off, Gangnam-style.

You forget about Juan Williams…

Yep I sure did.

Was watching a documentary online about Emmit Till — what the narrator briefly touched on and what’s been bothering me ever since I’ve heard the story, is “Who Told?”

There were only a bunch of black kids in the store when the infamous whistle took place and the two white ladies. The two white ladies, in the store, decided NOT to tell because they knew their husbands and they knew he was just a kid showing off and meant no harm.

So it stands to reason that the black kids went home and told someone at their house.

Who in turn went and told Bryant and Milam which resulted in the boy’s horrific death, (also there is reportedly a black man who was WITH THEM during the time of the child’s murder).

I bring this up because Juan Williams reminds me of that mysterious guy from the Till tragedy.

He’ll do anything to ingratiate himself towards insane, bullying people.

Juan Williams’ PERFORMANCE at the South CArolina Republican Debates. He’s NEVER been interested in race relations, yet all of a sudden he asked two very leading questions to Newt Gingrich concerning race.

Its almost as if Gingrich PAID Williams to “go there”.

The Democratic National Convention released a full transcript of Rep. John Lewis’s (D-Ga.) speech to the 2012 Democratic National Convention (as prepared for delivery). Read the full text below:

I first came to this city in 1961, the year Barack Obama was born. I was one of the 13 original “Freedom Riders.” We were on a bus ride from Washington to New Orleans trying to test a recent Supreme Court ruling that banned racial discrimination on buses crossing state lines and in the stations that served them. Here in Charlotte, a young African-American rider got off the bus and tried to get a shoe shine in a so-called white waiting room. He was arrested and taken to jail.

On that same day, we continued on to Rock Hill, South Carolina, about 25 miles. From here, when my seatmate, Albert Bigelow, and I tried to enter a white waiting room, we were met by an angry mob that beat us and left us lying in a pool of blood. Some police officers came up and asked us whether we wanted to press charges. We said, “No, we come in peace, love and nonviolence.” We said our struggle was not against individuals, but against unjust laws and customs. Our goal was true freedom for every American.

Since then, America has made a lot of progress. We are a different society than we were in 1961. And in 2008, we showed the world the true promise of America when we elected President Barack Obama. A few years ago, a man from Rock Hill, inspired by President Obama’s election, decided to come forward. He came to my office in Washington and said, “I am one of the people who beat you. I want to apologize. Will you forgive me?” I said, “I accept your apology.” He started crying. He gave me a hug. I hugged him back, and we both started crying. This man and I don’t want to go back; we want to move forward.

Brothers and sisters, do you want to go back? Or do you want to keep America moving forward? My dear friends, your vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful, nonviolent tool we have to create a more perfect union. Not too long ago, people stood in unmovable lines. They had to pass a so-called literacy test, pay a poll tax. On one occasion, a man was asked to count the number of bubbles in a bar of soap. On another occasion, one was asked to count the jelly beans in a jar—all to keep them from casting their ballots.

Today it is unbelievable that there are Republican officials still trying to stop some people from voting. They are changing the rules, cutting polling hours and imposing requirements intended to suppress the vote. The Republican leader in the Pennsylvania House even bragged that his state’s new voter ID law is “gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state.” That’s not right. That’s not fair. That’s not just.

And similar efforts have been made in Texas, Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia and South Carolina. I’ve seen this before. I’ve lived this before. Too many people struggled, suffered and died to make it possible for every American to exercise their right to vote.

And we have come too far together to ever turn back. So we must not be silent. We must stand up, speak up and speak out. We must march to the polls like never before. We must come together and exercise our sacred right. And together, on November 6, we will re-elect the man who will lead America forward: President Barack Obama.

Matti: Thanks. The recipe I found was pretty much what you said (lol even down to the andouille sausage). Think I’ll get down to Kroger and get the “scrimp.” I have everything else I need. It will take about 2 hours though to get the shrimp both ready, I have to peel them first. Shame they don’t sell them with the heads on at Kroger.

Bman: How is celebrating the progress we as a Country have made in the last 40 years race baiting? In the last three paragraphs (the ones that were cut from the video) Lewis says nothing about race, he’s talking about EVERYONE.

Is he (John Lewis) a far left political hack? In my opinion yes. I got a copy of his book for him to sign, yet when I tried to read it I just couldn’t. The first chapter was just too much left wing propaganda. I was hoping to hear more of the story of his LIFE and less the story of his politics………

Mystery meat: The problem I have with people like Lewis is the fact that their districts are still poor

The poorest districts in America are in Appalachia — predominantly white AND lots of violence and drugs.

For decades, African-Americans have voted for Dems and they are still poor.

For decades there have been people who voted for Repubs and THEY are still poor — no mega millionaires have suddenly been reported coming out of a single district yet.

The family structure is almost non-existent and there are NO leaders.

That’s happening ALL over America, with the rate of divorce, not just in black communities. anything else?

Until folks take personal responsibility there will continue to be massive problems.

So, what are YOU doing to help? I mean besides talking about it on this blog? You talk “personal responsibility” ( a repiblican catch phrase), tell that to the people of Appalachia — who have faced poverty at the generational level too. Your faux sympathy really touches my heart, really it does.

Okay, I know what you’re saying about how all Black folks are supposed to think alike, and act in lockstep. I’m a Jew, I’m gay, and I’m a Southerner, so I am not immune to being target of that charge. But, let’s be honest. We “those people” do do our own share in enforcing that orthodoxy intra nostra, whether or not we want to admit it. Step off the plantation, off the rez or out of the shtettl or any of the other names for the ghettoes in which we retreat psychologically and culturally if not so much enforced by “them,” and get ready for our own grand inquisitors.

Of course, when you come right down to it, it’s nothing more nor less than any “bucking the system.” The three of us would like to pride ourselves on not being afraid to do that, but I think when we really look at it, we will come rallying to the defense of “our people” when under attack from one of “them,” even when we know they may have a point. It’s just we want to be the ones to say it.

Consider that 50 years ago, there were politicians who kept their power by disenfranchising part of our society. Fast forward to today, and you have what appears to be the same power grab going on. I don’t think Lewis’ words are about race as much as it is about society as a whole. One constant thing about American history is that, there is always a scapegoat. Whether it’s different immigrant groups, Blacks, Latinos, Gays, or whatever other group you wish to target, there has always been a subset of our society that has been treated like sh*t on the soles of our shoes.

The current swath of voter ID laws, in my opinion, is an attempt to recreate the atmosphere of 40-50 years ago. The targeted group may be the same, or it may be different, but the manner in which the laws have been written and directed leaves no clue as to who’s trying to grab power.

When the stats started predicting White Americans losing their majority status, I joked with a few of my White friends about them pushing apartheid type laws to keep control. It was all done in jest, but I’m seeing a different power grab taking shape.

The far right is losing their grip on power, as evidenced by the repeated RINO or moderate candidates that have led the GOP recently. I don’t think they are targeting anybody because of race, sexual preference, or anything else more than they are simply targeting “the enemy” in order to maintain their power grip. That’s why you hear so much about “race baiting” and other things in conversations. All one has to do is yell loud enough and people begin to believe things even when the evidence to disprove the yelling slaps them in the face.

How IS it implying that to not vote for Obama is taking us back 40 years? I don’t see a correlation between the two anywhere in that speech. I like John Lewis for his character and his civil right past (and present). I despise his politics. Me saying I like (almost worship lol) John Lewis as a man doesn’t mean I would VOTE for him.

Showing where we were in 1961 where a black man could get beaten near to death for trying to vote and where we ARE in 2008 when a Black man can get elected President doesn’t imply that not voting for a Black man takes us back 50 years. It is just a comparison of how things have changed for the better.

Truthfully? Had the Republicans chosen a decent candidate, or the Libertarians, I would for for him and NOT Barack Obama. I didn’t like President Bush at ALL, didn’t vote for him the first time (vote Harry Brown), but when they Dems picked John Kerry I felt HE (Kerry) was so bad that I voted for Bush to be sure Kerry didn’t win. It’s the same this time. I’m not so much voting for Obama as I’m voting AGAINST Mr. Entitled, send all the jobs to China so I can stay rich,Romney.

No, the ridiculous arguments are the straw arguments trying to tie voting (a right protected by the Constitution) to other things that no citizen or resident have a protected “right”. When any of those things have their protections enshrined into the Constitution, you’ll have a valid argument.

The way the voter ID laws are written do absolutely nothing about fighting actual fraud. If you want to combat voter fraud, why would you purposefully leave the two largest doors, absentee ballots and registration, wide open for fraud to continue?

Maybe it’s just me, but this voter fraud thingie is, imeoiauo, a red herring. I’m not saying that it doesn’t exist. It always has and always will anytime you have votes being cast. The issue is a matter of degree and on that count this country has a pretty good record especially in the latter 20th Century. The right to vote and access to the ballot are a separate issue.

Pretty good actually. Mitt is in the lead in most polls. Calling someone a dumbass is childish. Akin is in the lead and Mcaskill’s husband is in big trouble as is she. Scrott Brown is schooling Pow Wow Chow. I have no idea about Allen. Virginia went red in 2010 and will remain red.

Where in the Constitution does it say that you have a right to vote?

The Constitution contains many phrases, clauses, and amendments detailing ways people cannot be denied the right to vote. You cannot deny the right to vote because of race or gender. Citizens of Washington DC can vote for President; 18-year-olds can vote; you can vote even if you fail to pay a poll tax. The Constitution also requires that anyone who can vote for the “most numerous branch” of their state legislature can vote for House members and Senate members.

Note that in all of this, though, the Constitution never explicitly ensures the right to vote, as it does the right to speech, for example. It does require that Representatives be chosen and Senators be elected by “the People,” and who comprises “the People” has been expanded by the aforementioned amendments several times. Aside from these requirements, though, the qualifications for voters are left to the states. And as long as the qualifications do not conflict with anything in the Constitution, that right can be withheld. For example, in Texas, persons declared mentally incompetent and felons currently in prison or on probation are denied the right to vote. It is interesting to note that though the 26th Amendment requires that 18-year-olds must be able to vote, states can allow persons younger than 18 to vote, if they chose to.

Where in the Constitution does it give any rights? The Constitution protects rights that are considered given by our creator. There are explicit protections enshrined into the Constitution, and other protections have been added by amending the Constitution.

The 19th Ammendment gave women the right to vote.

Riddle me this — An Ammendment to the constitution means that a law or “right” was previously given in the Constitution, correct? Then if there isn’t ANY “right to vote” in the constitution originally, then why should there be any ammendments giving certain groups the right to vote?

As I said earlier, the Constitution does not give or express rights. It simply protects rights that are given by our creator. I guess we’ll have to make an Amendment for those who are reading impaired to simplify the wording so that it’s easy enough that you don’t need an easy button to figure it out.
