A civil rights icon does it Gangnam style

A brief note of introduction:

“Gangnam” is a district of Seoul, South Korea. PSY is a South Korean rapper/video star — think of a cross of MC Hammer with Pee Wee Herman — from the Gangnam district. “Gangnam Style” is PSY’s worldwide viral dance video hit, viewed more than 500 million times on Youtube so far. (Original here.)

With that as background, here’s a video put together by the Asian American Legal Advocacy Center here in Atlanta, urging people to register and vote. You may recognize some of the settings — the state Capitol, the MLK silhouette on Freedom Parkway. You may also recognize the older voting-rights champion who gamely dances Gangnam-style to get his message across.

Whatever you think of his politics, you have to admire a politician who doesn’t take himself too seriously. Personally, I would pay a lot to see Barack Obama and Mitt Romney in a dance-off, Gangnam-style.

I must be missing something is this Libyan attack question. Exactly why does it matter so much whether this was a street demonstration out of control or a planned terrorist attack? In this part of the world, there isn’t much difference between one and the other.

Maybe this is just Republican desperation politics since they can only play on the negative and can offer little or nothing positive.

All of the above. If pressed, they would say “the embassy (it’s a consulate, not an embassy) should have had more security”, but then not be able to defend why Paul Ryan voted to cut $330 million from the embassy security budget. Nor can they say that Obama’s response to the violence was wrong. All they seem to focus on is the word “terror” and when it was used. That’s sad.

As for John Lewis: COOL! Should we have a vote Jay about which politician would be more willing to do a video like this first, Obama The Cool or Romney The Stiff?

The true issues just for starters are:

1) Since the ambassador and others had requested additional security why wasn’t that implemented or why weren’t they withdrawn until it could be implemented?

2) Why did our intelligence fail us?

3) Once an attack was imminent/undertaken, why wasn’t a rescue force launched?

4) Why did the Obama administration try to cover up the true nature of the attack?

So are you suggesting that we didn’t have the money to provide for security requests…did we not have the money to make sure the WH got the 24 scoop from STATE? The half truth being spun from the LIBS on this issue is absurdly contextually blown out of proportion…In fact only 5% of the reduction from what Obama requested..and BO’s budget proposals are simply a beginning negotiation posture…they are always compromised

Why did Obama sign it?

But this approach has problems as well. For starters, Biden glosses over the fact that the president did ultimately sign the bill with the new lower funding amount, meaning he shares some responsibility for the lower level. (All presidential budget requests are opening offers that inevitably become subject to negotiation.)

CBS NEWS: “Could U.S. military have helped during Libya attack?”

“CBS News has been told that, hours after the attack began, an unmanned Predator drone was sent over the U.S. mission in Benghazi, and that the drone and other reconnaissance aircraft apparently observed the final hours of the protracted battle.

Retired CIA officer Gary Berntsen believes help could have come much sooner. He commanded CIA counter-terrorism missions targeting Osama bin Laden and led the team that responded after bombings of the U.S. Embassy in East Africa.

“You find a way to make this happen,” Berntsen says. “There isn’t a plan for every single engagement. Sometimes you have to be able to make adjustments. They made zero adjustments in this. They stood and they watched and our people died.”

In Beirut Friday, the head of the Lebanese military’s intelligence operation, Maj. Gen Wissam al-Hassan, was killed in a car-bombing along with seven others, including his security detail. When the Lebanese military can’t protect one of its top intelligence leaders in its own country, a country that is considerably more stable than Libya at the moment, the notion that the assassination of a U.S. ambassador in Benghazi represents some terrible security failure looks pretty silly. It is simply a dangerous place

As Congress was told last week, none of the additional security folks requested but denied for Libya would have accompanied Ambassador Stevens to Benghazi anyway. They were to be posted at the embassy in Tripoli.

This whole thing reeks of the type of political opportunism that we did not see in the wake of the bombing of the Marine barracks that killed 241, the bombing of our Beirut embassy that killed more than 60, the downing of a Korean airliner by the Soviets that killed a Georgia congressman or, more recently, the attacks of 9/11, the destruction of a U.S. consulate in Pakistan that killed 12 in 2002, the two subsequent attacks on that same consulate that killed five, including a U.S. diplomat, the two attacks in 2008 on our embassy in Yemen, etc.

I have to say that I have become increasingly tired of all the continued noise regarding the attack in Benghazi. I of course am saddened by the deaths that occured but I am not sure if they could have been prevented at this time since all of the information has not had time to be properly assessed. There were protests regarding the video in other areas of the ME at that time and in fact recent information suggests that protest of this video could have been used as an excuse for or bit of cover for the terrorist who planned this attack. There is nothing I have seen or read in any Presidental or Administration statement that makes me feel that any coverup is afoot. I suppose I should be relieved to know that if Mitt had been in charge during this incident, we would have been privy to all of the details instantly and in real time as they occured, since apparently the Republican party has some abilty to just “know”, rather than have to wait for investigation like the Democrats do.

Huh, the Arab Spring is an absolutely necessary and overdue development, if also a dangerous development. The longer it is delayed, the more dangerous it will be once it occurs.

And while it has its roots in the Arab world, inspiring such a movement was one of the primary foreign-policy goals of the Bush administration. In fact, it constituted one of the administration’s favorite arguments in favor of using force to remove Saddam Hussein and installing a democratic form of government there.

When I and others questioned at the time whether such a thing could be accomplished by force, rather than by the Arabs themselves, I was lectured by conservatives for being racist and “prejudiced” against the Arab world for thinking they were incapable of democracy.

The peoples of the Islamic nations want and deserve the same freedoms and opportunities as people in every nation. And their governments should listen to their hopes.

A truly strong nation will permit legal avenues of dissent for all groups that pursue their aspirations without violence. An advancing nation will pursue economic reform, to unleash the great entrepreneurial energy of its people. A thriving nation will respect the rights of women, because no society can prosper while denying opportunity to half its citizens. Mothers and fathers and children across the Islamic world, and all the world, share the same fears and aspirations. In poverty, they struggle. In tyranny, they suffer. “John Lewis is the guy who nearly got beat to death in Selma. Far more man than your chicken-**** butt.”

Yep, he rode MLK all the way to congress. The guy hasn’t done squat for his district and the folks that vote for him are still poor as ever after all these years. Far more than me? Sorry pal, but you don’t know me or anything I’ve ever done.

I don’t take race baiting congressmen seriously.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Your lack of knowledge of the accomplishments of John Lewis would be sad if it were not so typical of you hard right wingers. He rode MLK’s coat tails to the House? Really?

He was one of the ORIGINAL freedom riders in 1961, MLK wasn’t.

John Lewis did not become a member of Congress until 1986, almost 20 years AFTER the death of MLK.

I could write an essay on the accomplishments of John Lewis, who by the way told my then 8 year old daughter that “Marty” was one of his closest and dearest friends, when she “interviewed” him 2 years ago, but then you wouldn’t read it anyway. You merely want to spout ignorant sound bites. And given your statement your ignorance of the life and accomplishments of Congressman John Lewis is virtually complete. I would say that your entire knowledge of him is that he’s black, a democrat, and once knew MLK.

You really should educate yourself on this outstanding American. He IS a true hero and an embodiment of all that is good about the US and our experiment in Government. His courage as he walked unarmed into hostile mobs is unquestioned. His patriotism as he stood up for the right of ALL people to vote is boundless. His compassion for ALL people, especially Americans, is admirable. The depth of his character and moral fiber as displayed in his actions towards Elwin Wilson is astounding. I WISH I was half the man that John Lewis, all 5′2” (he may be a little taller lol) is.

HE Pennypacker,
“Today the Washington Post indicates that CIA talking points the day Susan Rice referenced the video indicated the video as their cause of the violence.”

Then why is Obama suggesting in the last debate (verified by CNN moderator) that he called it an “act of terror” the day after the attack? Was he “shooting first and aiming later”, or is he just lying on top of lies?

Huh,

Interesting article, thanks for the post. I assume you read the end where it stated that although some analysts have suspicions of an organized attack, they have not been able to establish proof.

Please proceed, Governor……

Based on the comments from some of our con bloggers, I’d say they’ve been on one too many high altitude airplane rides on a Mitt Romney designed commercial airliner. Hanging their heads out the windows with their tongues flopping in the wind too, no doubt.

Georgia supposedly hasn’t beaten a ranked team since 2008. I haven’t done the research to support or refute the claim, but it sounds plausible.

“The doctrine notes that fighting an insurgency requires a lot of manpower. Last fall, in an interview with Petraeus at his office in Leavenworth, I asked whether the counterinsurgency doctrine could be successful in Iraq, given our manpower problems.

“It would be difficult,” Petraeus conceded. “It would be very, very difficult.”

Byteme: It’s worse than that. We haven’t beaten a top ten team in like 10 years and only 2 top 25 teams in that time period, GaTech, when they were 23 or something, and some other scrubby team that was barely in the top 25.

It’s really sad, but typical of a Mark Richt team.

Ken,

In a messy part of the world with conflicting intelligence coming in my the day, you find your evidence in the parsing of words? Show me evidence of a coverup.

Perhaps you would feel better if he took the conflicting intelligence and used it as a justification for a war that would cost us the lives of over 4,000 soldiers and more than a $1,000,000,000,000. Given the magnitude of this mistake you must have been a thousand times angrier about Iraq.

Jay, I know that you are a shill for the president. You have too much time invested in him and you can’t take the blinders off to see how much of a disaster he and his policies are. I’m still waiting for anyone on the left to show me what his plans for the next four years are. You can attack Romney all you want but it won’t change the fact that there is a fiscal disaster coming in January.
