Did you know that the NFL is a tax-exempt nonprofit?

Once in a while, I run across something that I did not know and it leaves me flabbergasted.

For example, I did not know that the National Football League, the colossus of professional sports, is classified as a non-profit — a tax-free non-profit, to be more specific. That’s right: The NFL has its own exemption, written into federal law, that makes it exempt from federal corporate taxes.

IT'S GOOD! ... to be a tax-exempt nonprofit

IT'S GOOD! ... to be a tax-exempt nonprofit

The Professional Golf Association and the National Hockey League, among others, enjoy a similar exemption although in their cases, it is not an exemption specifically written into the law.

As described in Waste Book 2012 — compiled by the staff of U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, a conservative Republican from Oklahoma:

In 2010, the registered NFL nonprofit alone received $184 million from its 32 member teams. It holds over $1 billion in assets. Together with its subsidiaries and teams – many of which are for-profit, taxed entities – the NFL generates an estimated $9 billion annually. Each of its teams are among the top 50 most expensive sports teams in the world, ranking alongside the world’s famous soccer teams. Almost half of professional football teams are valued at over $1 billion….

League commissioners and officials benefit from the nonprofit status of their organizations. Roger Goodell, commissioner of the NFL, reported $11.6 million in salary and perks in 2010 alone. Goodell’s salary will reportedly reach $20 million in 2019. Steve Bornstein, the executive vice president of media, made $12.2 million in 2010. Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue earned $8.5 million from the league in 2010. The league paid five other officials a total of $19.2 million in just one year. In comparison, the next highest salary of a traditional nonprofit CEO is $3.4 million.

The NFL’s exemption stems from a 1966 law, passed at the time of the merger with the old American Football League, specifically allowing “professional football leagues” to enjoy 501(c)(6) status as tax-exempt trade organizations. Other leagues have piggy-backed on that legislation to claim that status themselves.

Major League Baseball also used to enjoy the same tax-exempt protection, but in 2007 it chose to surrender that status in part because as the salary information above illustrates, tax-exempt, non-profit status requires you to report the salaries of your top executives. MLB decided that protecting that information from the public was more important than escaping taxes.

As the Coburn report points out, “state and local governments usually exempt these organizations from state income and sales tax as well….” As the Indiana Business Journal reported, that proved to be a nice little perk when the Super Bowl was held in Indianapolis this year, because “hotels and restaurants … won’t be taxing National Football League employees. They’re exempt from paying, according to an Indiana Department of Revenue directive. The NFL is using its tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(6) to avoid paying the taxes, in addition to fuel, auto rental and admissions taxes.”

In Atlanta’s case, a hotel-motel tax was used to build the Georgia Dome and would also be used to help finance the proposed new open-air stadium demanded by the Falcons. If Georgia tax law is like that of many states, the NFL and its employees would be exempted from paying the tax that everyone else must pay to subsidize stadiums built for a highly profitable industry.

Can you say “Scchhhwwweeeeet”?

It’s not even that. When you’re part of a state pension, you have no say in even who the trustee is going to be. With blind trusts, you pick the trustee. Mitt’s wasn’t a blind trust when he hid his money overseas, was it? And if that’s the case, did he break blind trust rules by having that money moved back so he could run for President for pete’s sake? :)

A good book to read is “Soccernomics”. As a general rule sports are unprofitable. The value of them has nothing to do with their profitablity. It is more or less a luxury good for the owner. If you really want a good understanding of sports business this book is great even though it primarily focuses on England’s Premier League.

I believe the main issue with sports teams in the US is the leagues are granted monoplies and they use the monopoly to levarage local governments to build stadiums. In Europe a soccer team can’t just up an dmove to another town because every town already has a soccer team. The leagues have teams moving in and out of the leagues based on performance. In the United States the number of teams is fairly static which means citys have to compete with each other to get a team.

Let’s not get sidetracked by the issues and the debates. Forget the party affiliation. If a candidate wants to win in a landslide then that candidate needs to adopt this simple platform:

1. Any law passed by congress will apply to the members of congress as it does to United States citizens.

2. There will be no pension or retirement pay for elected members of the federal government or their appointments.

3. No tax rate for an individual citizen or corporation can be higher than the lowest tax rate of any member of congress.

If you want to discuss the NFL and transition to cover ups, you should review the Pat Tillman story. He was killed in April of 2004, and the actual cause of death – friendly fire was not disclosed until 2007. This was despite the fact that investigators knew within days that there was no evidence of hostile fire, and Tillman had been killed by rounds likely from US forces. There are some reports that soldiers were ordered to lie to Tillman’s family at the funeral. The Actual CID investigation was opened in March 2006 and the report was issued in March 2007.
This sequence of events is consistent with the history of coverups. Watergate occurred in 1972, and the investigations and hearings took two years to reveal the extent of wrong doing. Reagan’s sale of weapons to Iran was being investigated, when Oliver North was shredding documents in the basement of the White House.
That is how cover ups works USMC. If you are angry about cover ups, talk to the Tillman family about the Bush administration and cover ups. You are spending a lot of energy on faux outrage on an incident that was clarified within two weeks.

“Funny how fast the cons decided that the polls weren’t “skewed” any more, isn’t it?”

It is funny but they always have to blame something else for their failures.

cons never take personal responsibility for anything.

“It will show if the Right is, as they say, only about defending marriage, or if their real agenda is to deny protections to same-sex couples.”

Any two people of any persuasion can have wills, powers of attorney (medical/legal/financial), etc. that will allow them those protections. The sanctity of one man/one woman should be protected. If the marriage of two people of the same sex is eventually upheld by the Surpeme Court then there is no “legal basis” to deny anything else including three people.

” Same everything as marriage, different noun.”

No, it’s not. Some states, some counties and the Federal Government treat them as different. In addition, there are still plenty of employers who won’t treat a civil union the same way.”

We’ve had extensive discussions on this. I think I’ve been pretty consistent in saying laws would be updated to correct the situations to which you refer.

Just FYI, I was looking over some recent polls last evening, and I stumbled across one that . . . GASP . . . OVERSAMPLES REPUBLICANS. And as we all know (because the cons told us so) that never happens and oversampling automatically leads to invalid survey results, right?

FWIW, I wasn’t *looking* for such a poll; I just happened to notice that cons were oversampled in the poll. And I bet if someone did some research, I bet they’d find out that cons get oversampled quite a bit more than cons are actually willing to admit.

Here’s the poll in question:

http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/2011/PPP_Release_CO_1016.pdf

You will, of course, notice that the MOE is +/-4.7% in that poll. IMO, that’s a horrible MOE and not in any way reliable.

I’d like to hold that thought until josef shows up. He can provide a real-world example, not just a theoretical one.

Part of my basis for posting that was California before Prop 8. What those on the Left sought to disregard was what you described was, in fact, the case. What they did not like was one group having a different label than they had.

As a wife and mother, I LOVE this binder. It keeps me in my place, allows me to get dinner ready on time, AND only costs 72% of the more masculine version. Some people might think it’s sexist, but sheesh, I’m not binding my feet, just my brain. Extra bonus, if you sit on it just right, it can act as an effective method of birth control! Full disclosure: I submitted this under my husband’s account, with his full permission. He is the head of our household, and the owner of the binder.

As I’ve said many times, I have no problem with requiring ID to vote. The problem with the GOP approaches is that they’re half-azzed, insecure, rushed to completion and always happen right before an election (so they wind up suppressing the vote whether they mean to or not).

If y’all were serious, you’d come up with a serious proposal for a voter ID program that addresses all those problems. But I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for one.

Here’s some reporting(from CNN of all places) that pretty much cancels out the elation you lib-tards had over the fake U3 job numbers.

“Along with the official unemployment rate, the Department of Labor also calculates something called the employment-population ratio, which measures the percent of the U.S. adult population that has a job.
The rate currently stands at 58.7%. While it jumps around slightly from month to month, it has essentially been stuck there for three years — close to the lowest level since the 1980s.
That paints a much bleaker picture of the job market than the unemployment rate, which has fallen considerably in the last year. “

Then go to the other option that’s been discussed. All couples who want the rights and responsibilities get the ceremony by the civil authorities. Anyone who wants something churches call ‘marriage’ then go to a church and have the ceremony. No legal effects. Just ecclesiastical.

I have a different take on it. I do not think religious aurthorities should be deputized to perform a legal function. I think everyone should be married by a legal authority. If they want a church blessing on their marriage, there should be 2 presiding authorities: the religious one to bless the wedding, and a legal one to pronounce the marriage legal and to sign the marriage license.
