Once in a while, I run across something that I did not know and it leaves me flabbergasted.
For example, I did not know that the National Football League, the colossus of professional sports, is classified as a non-profit — a tax-free non-profit, to be more specific. That’s right: The NFL has its own exemption, written into federal law, that makes it exempt from federal corporate taxes.

IT'S GOOD! ... to be a tax-exempt nonprofit
The Professional Golf Association and the National Hockey League, among others, enjoy a similar exemption although in their cases, it is not an exemption specifically written into the law.
As described in Waste Book 2012 — compiled by the staff of U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, a conservative Republican from Oklahoma:
In 2010, the registered NFL nonprofit alone received $184 million from its 32 member teams. It holds over $1 billion in assets. Together with its subsidiaries and teams – many of which are for-profit, taxed entities – the NFL generates an estimated $9 billion annually. Each of its teams are among the top 50 most expensive sports teams in the world, ranking alongside the world’s famous soccer teams. Almost half of professional football teams are valued at over $1 billion….
League commissioners and officials benefit from the nonprofit status of their organizations. Roger Goodell, commissioner of the NFL, reported $11.6 million in salary and perks in 2010 alone. Goodell’s salary will reportedly reach $20 million in 2019. Steve Bornstein, the executive vice president of media, made $12.2 million in 2010. Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue earned $8.5 million from the league in 2010. The league paid five other officials a total of $19.2 million in just one year. In comparison, the next highest salary of a traditional nonprofit CEO is $3.4 million.
The NFL’s exemption stems from a 1966 law, passed at the time of the merger with the old American Football League, specifically allowing “professional football leagues” to enjoy 501(c)(6) status as tax-exempt trade organizations. Other leagues have piggy-backed on that legislation to claim that status themselves.
Major League Baseball also used to enjoy the same tax-exempt protection, but in 2007 it chose to surrender that status in part because as the salary information above illustrates, tax-exempt, non-profit status requires you to report the salaries of your top executives. MLB decided that protecting that information from the public was more important than escaping taxes.
As the Coburn report points out, “state and local governments usually exempt these organizations from state income and sales tax as well….” As the Indiana Business Journal reported, that proved to be a nice little perk when the Super Bowl was held in Indianapolis this year, because “hotels and restaurants … won’t be taxing National Football League employees. They’re exempt from paying, according to an Indiana Department of Revenue directive. The NFL is using its tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(6) to avoid paying the taxes, in addition to fuel, auto rental and admissions taxes.”
In Atlanta’s case, a hotel-motel tax was used to build the Georgia Dome and would also be used to help finance the proposed new open-air stadium demanded by the Falcons. If Georgia tax law is like that of many states, the NFL and its employees would be exempted from paying the tax that everyone else must pay to subsidize stadiums built for a highly profitable industry.
Can you say “Scchhhwwweeeeet”?

Or maybe he wanted to ask again about the size of Obama’s pension fund and then imagine that part of it is invested in a Cayman Islands trust?
I’ll take that one back, since it’s finally been fact-checked. The funny part is it reminds everyone that Romney has put most of his money in off-shore trusts to avoid taxes.

Pension Envy: Who Has More—Obama or Romney?
In one of the debate’s lighter moments, Obama countered, “I don’t look at my pension. It’s not as big as yours so it doesn’t take as long. I don’t check it that often.”
But what about Romney?
It’s extensively documented that Romney is, well, a rich guy. He earned untold millions —though famously circumspect about releasing tax returns — while leading private equity giant Bain Capital and has a substantial retirement plan.
His Individual Retirement Account could be worth in the neighborhood of $87 million, as documented in an extensive report from the Washington Post .
But as for a strictly public pension? Zip, zero.
Romney only served one term as governor of the Bay State and did not take a salary, so he is eligible for nothing.
So while Romney appears headed for a happier retirement financially, he’ll be footing his own bill — unless, of course, he wins next month. In that case, his nest egg will be even that much bigger than Obama’s.

I’d wait for rebuttal before peddling that particular number hard…per WH data kindly supplied by my close personal friend Taxpayer…past four years:
Medicare/SS spending up 27% each
Education/Social Services up 51%
Total income security (including housing assistance and food stamps) up 58%
To be fair all of these were on an unsustainable trajectory the prior 10 years and when you factor in recession, some of the increases can be justified….the demographics play a big role..
The big problem is we can’t afford these trends to continue…no candidate has or likely can stem the flow of deficit ceiling increases…of which drive our interest expense up an estimated 147% by 2017

Hollywood too !!!!!!!!!!!!
Hollywood tax breaks extended under bill headed to Gov. Brown
A $100 million annual tax break for California motion picture companies would be extended under legislation headed to Gov. Jerry Brown.
Sylmar Democratic Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes proposed the two-year extension, Assembly Bill 2026, which cleared its final legislative hurdle late Friday night in the Assembly by a vote of 60-4.
The program of tax credits initially was signed into law by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, in 2009. Fuentes’ measure would extend the program from July 2015 to July 2017.
The tax concession targets major motion picture projects in which 75 percent of the shooting days take place in California or 75 percent of its production budget pays for services, purchases or property rental in the state.
AB 2026 is meant to encourage California’s motion picture industry, which has made Hollywood famous, not to relocate.
Forty states offer financial incentives to the industry, as do Canada, Australia and much of Europe, according to a legislative analysis of AB 2026.

Now that is good news.
So let’s fast forward to a possible Romney inauguration.
There’s a parallel with Pres Obama and the Bush administration. Obama took over right at the time we experienced the culmination of years of Republican policies that led to an economic collapse. Democrats pointed that out and all we heard was ‘you’re just blaming Bush!”
So we then would have a Pres Romney taking over shortly after four years of Pres Obama’s efforts came to fruition. Which means the trends were well underway. In very positive ways, as the article showed.
Question is, will we hear Republicans say ‘well, it really did begin under Obama…”?

Romney’s outsourcing activities (conducted via Bain and its properties) meant that Romney *directly and personally profited* from choosing to screw Americans out of their jobs and send them to China. That’s what he — and you — are missing.

JAY,
All good stuff but what concerns me is the use of a poll to ascertain unemployment..seems to me we should be comparing apples to apples (BLS)…my other concern and as evidenced by the graphs is that most of those categories are uber-sensitive…..it wouldn’t take much for the banks to stop whatever lending (a minscule amount compared to what capacity they are sitting on) they are providing…
Increase in domestic car sales is awesome…I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
Consumer confidence and stock gains are also great trends but again, any slight reverse economic news could change these in a heartbeat..
At least we can enjoy these for today…I’m more convinced the economy will dip into recession again in the next couple years..of course I’m paid to be cynical..

stands: This will get approximately 0.000001% of the play in the corporate media as we had with Bill Ayers having sat on a board with Obama and hosting a fundraiser for him.
And 0.000000000001% of that afforded to “Scary Colored Minister Who Said Gee Dee ‘Merka when Obama wasn’t around”-gate.
And the Cons are always talking about how the “liberal media” this and the “liberal media” that, are sooo against them! Right! They’re HELPING them.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) — “The head (Senator Feinstein) of the U.S. Senate’s Intelligence Committee said Wednesday that it appeared an intelligence mistake along with inadequate security were to blame for the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the American Embassy in Benghazi, Libya that claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens, a Bay Area native, and three others.
“I can tell you this, I think we do know what happened now. There’s no question but THAT IT WAS A TERRORIST ATTACK (emphasis added), there is no question but that the security was inadequate and I think that there is no question that we need to work on our intelligence,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) during an exclusive interview with CBS 5.”

Didn’t need all the past speeches. Benghazi was pretty likely to come up because to Republicans, the most important foreign policy issue is the latest issue they heard about.

Adam, unlike many others, I don’t care what he called it or when, I want to know why he fed the BS about the video to the people for 2 weeks when he knew the attack had nothing to do with it.
What is your opinion of why he would do that?

Democrats enacted $1.803 billion for embassy security, construction and maintenance for fiscal 2010, when they still controlled the Senate and House. After Republicans took control of the House and picked up six Senate seats, Congress reduced the enacted budget to $1.616 billion in fiscal 2011, and to $1.537 billion for 2012.
The administration requested $1.801 billion for security, construction and maintenance for fiscal 2012; House Republicans countered with a proposal to cut spending to $1.425 billion. The House agreed to increase it to $1.537 billion after negotiations with the Senate.
The administration requested $1.654 billion for the State Department’s Worldwide Security Protection program for fiscal 2012. House Republicans proposed funding the program at $1.557 billion. Congress eventually enacted $1.591 billion after the Senate weighed in.
For fiscal 2013, the administration requested $2.15 billion in funding for the worldwide security protection program, a larger increase from the previous year. The House countered with a proposal to increase the program to $1.934 billion.

Just goes to show that our tax policy is in need of a HUGE overhaul. It is time to dump the vast majority of exemptions, and lower tax rates on businesses and individuals across the board.

You are a lazy commentator who is a reliable repeater of the DNC talking points. In 1966, LBJ was president and Senate was controlled by Democrats 64-36 and the House 248-187. By the way, the AFL-CIO is tax exempt under code section 501(c)(5) and that evil Chamber of Commerce is tax exempt under code section 501(c)(6).
And to prove my point about your laziness, your comment “If Georgia tax law is like that of many states, the NFL and its employees would be exempted from paying the tax that everyone else must pay to subsidize stadiums built for a highly profitable industry,” you could have found out the answer to that one with minimum research.

Are people ever going to get around to discussing the difference between an act of terror, a terrorist attack, an attack by terrorists, a military attack by terrorists, a terror attack by military?
Seems to me they base their… analysis… solely on ‘the groups a group we have labeled a terrorist group; therefore, anything they do is a terrorist attack.
So if Hezbollah joins forces with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in conducting classical military operations against Israel, we’re going to hear how Israel is responding to military and terror attacks. In the same battle.
Ah yes, simplicity does have a certain attractiveness for some -

His Illinois pension — over which he has no control — has an investment that includes a cayman trust. Not quite the same as hiding your money off-shore to avoid paying taxes, is it numbers guy?
