Did you know that the NFL is a tax-exempt nonprofit?

Once in a while, I run across something that I did not know and it leaves me flabbergasted.

For example, I did not know that the National Football League, the colossus of professional sports, is classified as a non-profit — a tax-free non-profit, to be more specific. That’s right: The NFL has its own exemption, written into federal law, that makes it exempt from federal corporate taxes.

IT'S GOOD! ... to be a tax-exempt nonprofit

IT'S GOOD! ... to be a tax-exempt nonprofit

The Professional Golf Association and the National Hockey League, among others, enjoy a similar exemption although in their cases, it is not an exemption specifically written into the law.

As described in Waste Book 2012 — compiled by the staff of U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, a conservative Republican from Oklahoma:

In 2010, the registered NFL nonprofit alone received $184 million from its 32 member teams. It holds over $1 billion in assets. Together with its subsidiaries and teams – many of which are for-profit, taxed entities – the NFL generates an estimated $9 billion annually. Each of its teams are among the top 50 most expensive sports teams in the world, ranking alongside the world’s famous soccer teams. Almost half of professional football teams are valued at over $1 billion….

League commissioners and officials benefit from the nonprofit status of their organizations. Roger Goodell, commissioner of the NFL, reported $11.6 million in salary and perks in 2010 alone. Goodell’s salary will reportedly reach $20 million in 2019. Steve Bornstein, the executive vice president of media, made $12.2 million in 2010. Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue earned $8.5 million from the league in 2010. The league paid five other officials a total of $19.2 million in just one year. In comparison, the next highest salary of a traditional nonprofit CEO is $3.4 million.

The NFL’s exemption stems from a 1966 law, passed at the time of the merger with the old American Football League, specifically allowing “professional football leagues” to enjoy 501(c)(6) status as tax-exempt trade organizations. Other leagues have piggy-backed on that legislation to claim that status themselves.

Major League Baseball also used to enjoy the same tax-exempt protection, but in 2007 it chose to surrender that status in part because as the salary information above illustrates, tax-exempt, non-profit status requires you to report the salaries of your top executives. MLB decided that protecting that information from the public was more important than escaping taxes.

As the Coburn report points out, “state and local governments usually exempt these organizations from state income and sales tax as well….” As the Indiana Business Journal reported, that proved to be a nice little perk when the Super Bowl was held in Indianapolis this year, because “hotels and restaurants … won’t be taxing National Football League employees. They’re exempt from paying, according to an Indiana Department of Revenue directive. The NFL is using its tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(6) to avoid paying the taxes, in addition to fuel, auto rental and admissions taxes.”

In Atlanta’s case, a hotel-motel tax was used to build the Georgia Dome and would also be used to help finance the proposed new open-air stadium demanded by the Falcons. If Georgia tax law is like that of many states, the NFL and its employees would be exempted from paying the tax that everyone else must pay to subsidize stadiums built for a highly profitable industry.

Can you say “Scchhhwwweeeeet”?

BYTME & KEEPS

Ok so I went to Obama site and Romney site (glad I didn’t eat breakfast)..I’m still not coming up with any more specifics…just goals and alledged accomplishments..

Both: Champion Small Business/Promise to Build a Stronger Middle Class/Getting Deficit and Debt Under Control/Reform Tax Code (I must be missing the specifics here…other than raising 80 billion a year from top 3% or whatever..when you divided 80 billion by 1.2 tillion deficit, you still have 93% left to cover)/Creating jobs for tomorrow per education (we seem to keep spending more on education with no results)…

I really don’t see any more specifics from either although I also think its Congress’ job to cover that…how is Romney going to create 12 million jobs? I dunno..How is BO going to address the deficit when his focus will only address 7-8% of problem…which won’t alleviate the demonization of the rich..

Also, why on earth do you toss insults my way relative to my intelligence? You realize, if not only from the presidential debates, that is an instinctual defense response…what exactly frightens you two mental giants?

Here’s – 9:58 “demand for talent and current supply”

This problem is far more serious than most people realize.

More and more of today’s jobs are requiring apptitudes in science and math. Unfortunately, most people don’t have these necessary apptitude leves. This is an inate human thing and cannot be changed. So, more and more jobs will go unfilled.

Point 1) how is Romney going to create 12 million jobs? I dunno..
Point 2) How is BO going to address the deficit when his focus will only address 7-8% of problem

If you can’t see the difference between specifics on these two I am not sure how to help you get it.

I wonder how much in cumulative tax load the individual team owners; players; stadium personnel; team support personnel; and directly associated entities and individuals contribute to the treasury.

And I also wonder if sales of all the licensed (logo) wares are taxed and what revenue is generated from said sales.

And then juxtapose those figures with contributions by other 501(c)6 tax exempt entities, and then we might actually have a story (and a graph or chart, too).

ADAM,

I can’t disagree with your rebuttal…I could have provided a better debate point to be sure.

I’m trying to point out that the odds of either plan being pulled off and accomplishing any meaningful improvements for us are slim to none.

So my point here is that BO’s primary objective of raising an additional 80 billion a year to reduce deficit by less than 10% is real? For that to even be possible he would need economic growth that is unrealistic and he would have to actually produce the spending cuts that were already on the table before he hit the scene..if he actually gets growth and cuts he puts out (not remotely likely) there, our interest spending alone will increase by 147% between now and 2017…

Romney’s claim of 12 million jobs is equally absurd as many of those jobs are already projected but again, the odds of them happening or the WH having any real impact are slim to none as well…

Keep Up the Good Fight!

Solyndra presses for bankruptcy plan OK over US objection

WILMINGTON, Del, Oct 17 (Reuters) – Failed solar panel maker Solyndra pressed a federal judge on Wednesday to approve its plan to end its politically charged bankruptcy over objections by the U.S. government, which argued the plan was being used by investors to dodge taxes.

Critics say government involvement in the company has cost taxpayers twice: for a $528 million government loan, and for tax breaks potentially worth $340 million that will go to venture capitalists.

Global capitalism cannot hack it. It struggles more and more every day to shore itself up, to re-stabilize itself, but with each lunge it sets off new crises. If Marx were around today, how he would nod knowingly at the spectacle of it.

But of course, collapse never comes. Global capitalism as always merely uses its own crises as more fuel to regenerate itself anew.

I know the answers with Obama (good with crisis, bad with opposition party). With Romney, not positive. He might have been wonderful with the opposition in MA, but they were looking to work with him and could over-ride his vetoes. Venture capitalists like Bain and Mitt? So are you outraged now at Bain and Mitt or your little Obama poutrage rabbithole without comprehension of why programs like the one Solyndra participated in exist? IOKIYA Mitt?

I had to a words or two to your comment. Sorry.

Joe: I think our own D. DoRight, Aquagirl, Matti, USinUK and Doggone would collectively kick the azz of anyone who dared try putting them in a binder.

Aquagirl: Which is why tweeting about “hump day” means she should make less money than a man.
Stuff her back in that binder, cons.

Hiya Aquagirl!!

Since he didn’t give the total tweet string (like what someone said before her and if she responded to them or not), she could’ve been talking about WEDNESDAY. But, of course, dirty old Boortz mind went straight to his little pecker for the answer.

Given Mr. Boortz’s bemoaning his lack of access to sluts in his youth, he should STFU. Guys who gleefully admit they’d “hit that” while complaining about the objects of their wishful hits are creepy. They need therapy, not talkie radio shows.

Yeah, he’s the creepy uncle / grandfather that your mother tells you to NEVER sit in his lap or pull ANYTHING he tells you to pull.

Oscar, I agree overall but that also presumes that there are consequences for lying and for not answering questions. Perhaps a debate where the “facts” which can be used are reviewed in advance and checked, and then the candidates can debate using actual facts? Until then, I guess Mitt will try to appear the bully rather than Presidential.

So according to the conservatives who think She handed the debate to Obama, that must mean she wanted to go out with Romney? :D

Goodbye to Ms. Fenton, the flat bellied little honey, and on to something of importance:

Romney says Obama also has investments in Chinese companies and through a Cayman Islands trust

Romney told Obama: “You also have investments in Chinese companies. You also have investments outside the United States. You also have investments through a Caymans trust.”

It’s an accurate set of statements when you consider investments made by managers of the Illinois pension fund in which Obama has an account.

As we noted in reviewing previous claims about Romney’s investments in China, the investments involved are indirect and — as far as anybody has said — made without the knowledge of the account holder.

With that clarification, we rate Romney’s statement Mostly True.

I sincerely believe that these “somalia” cracks are a form of progressive latent racsism.
Everybody makes fun of them.
Why?

I’m offended in that I know many good Somaliacs.
.
In actuality Somalia is a thriving Stateless society despite US.gov’s random drone inflicted violence.
Massive amounts of wealth is beiing created, a free-market hub of activity, and
free-market telecommunication projects/inventions will soon work their way to the USSA…………….if allowed.
We will all benefit..

Granted…………..it isn’t such a cool place if you expect politicians to protect you from walking marijuana cigarettes, gun owners, evil rich people, manage your pay check, manage your medical care, manage your uterus, . and manage your retirement.

______

Fact checks in advance would be hard. They have rules now in advance that the candidates ignore once the debate starts. They would never stay with the facts presented in advance. Too much temptation to add facts as they go. Some kind of instant fact check provided to the moderator might be an idea. With a buzzer system.

Also, the moderator should be able to turn off the microphones of the candidates which he wants, if they go over time or need to be corrected on their facts.

A good bully or debater never lets things like facts stand in the way of winning a point, especially if he can’t be proved wrong on the spot.

And you think Romney would have done better had he talked MORE? Figures.

Maybe he had more binders full of women that he wanted to share with us? Or maybe he wanted to ask again about the size of Obama’s pension fund and then imagine that part of it is invested in a Cayman Islands trust? Or maybe he wants to remind us again about some percentage of people that he doesn’t care about?

Be glad he got off the stage before he did more damage.

Says the guy who just yesterday wanted to argue about whether or not 4 dead Americans qualifies as a terror attack instead of discussing why the POTUS fed us this BS story about a video for 2 weeks.

“No ACTS OF TERROR will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for THIS TERRIBLE ACT.” (emphasis mine)

Just so we’re clear, look that over and tell me he wasn’t talking about the Benghazi attack. Further, explain to me how thinking the video had something to do with the reason for a terrorist attack excludes calling it a terrorist attack?
