So how much has Obama increased federal spending?

Mitt Romney has accused Barack Obama of igniting a “debt and spending inferno.” American Crossroads, the Karl Rove SuperPAC, says free spending by Obama “drove us $5 trillion deeper in debt.” Veep nominee Paul Ryan, who also chairs the House Budget Committee, this week accused Obama of stealing the next generation’s future with his spending spree.

All of that talk finally got me curious: Just how much HAS spending increased under President Obama? Put another way, what does a “debt and spending inferno” look like in numerical terms?

As the base year for this analysis, let’s take 2008, the last full year of George W. Bush’s presidency. You could make the argument for using 2009 as the base year, since the ‘09 spending bills had already been passed and fiscal 2009 was already almost four months underway by the time Obama took office. But to satisfy our conservative friends, we’ll take 2008 as a cleaner, less controversial starting point.

So, after adjusting for inflation, how much did federal spending increase from fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2012, which ended Oct. 1? Any guesses?

Just to give you some guidance in making that guess, federal spending under the sainted President Reagan grew by 9.6 percent from 1980 to 1984. (Again, all of these numbers are inflation-adjusted.) Under the second President Bush, with a largely Republican Congress, federal spending grew by 16.5 percent from 2000 to 2004.

So how much has it increased under Obama’s “spending inferno”? 25 percent? 35 percent?

The answer is 9.9 percent. Between 2008 and the recently completed fiscal 2012, total federal spending has increased by 9.9 percent, about the same amount as under Reagan and considerably less than under Bush.

fedspend

The chart above explains a lot about how we got here. On the right-hand side, you can see the impact of the Great Recession. In inflation-adjusted terms, federal spending is up less than 10 percent from 2008, but federal revenue is down substantially, falling 18 percent from fiscal ‘08 to ‘09.

In the longer term, you can see the rate of spending growth pick up under Bush in 2001. You can see revenue falter as a result of a small recession in 2001, and then continue to slide as a result of the Bush tax cuts. Those tax cuts have permanently altered the revenue trajectory, and combined with the Great Recession account for much of our debt and deficit woes.

So, to get bring us back to where we started:

Spending growth of 9.6 percent makes you a great conservative hero.

Spending growth of 9.9 percent makes you a great conservative villain.

And spending growth of 16.5 percent, combined with large tax cuts, makes you a recent two-term president whom nobody in your party wants to mention, and sets your country on a financially dangerous glide path.

TAXPAYER

Good stuff thanks..I’m trying to look at most of the tables…what I note so far is that as a percentage of GDP, receipts remain the same despite estimated doubling of tax increases by 2017…

So tax receipts both in terms of individual and corporate rates are both projected to double between 2001 and 2017….it is also important to see what assumptions they are making relative to the total number of taxpayers between the periods, timing estimates relative to how long it takes for changes in reciepts to take effect, and most importantly economic growth…

I will continue to look at these as my opinion may change or it may be reinforced or it may further suggest that nobody really knows what they are doing..

get back to you later today..good stuff..

A “spending inferno” arises from wasteful non-military spending increases. In the case of Chauncey, his waste is primarily in the realm of increased regulators, who have the double-whammy of increasing expenditures and depressing the real economy. Also, always be sure to omit the Obama “stimulus” which occurred in the last year “attributable” to President Bush when attempting to measure Obama’s “contribution” to American well-being..

The prosecution results so far have been encouraging: To date, approximately 150 investigations of offshore-banking clients have been initiated, of which 36 client cases have been charged, with 31 guilty pleas having been entered, 2 convicted after trial, and 5 awaiting trial. A number of facilitators who helped clients hide assets offshore at UBS and other banks have been indicted, resulting in 13 bankers and 2 attorneys being charged and awaiting trial, and one advisor and one banker being charged and convicted. In addition, investigations have been opened into numerous additional offshore banks across the world.

But the outcome cannot be measured in litigation results alone. This enforcement effort has dealt fabled Swiss bank secrecy a devastating blow and provided tools that should yield information on thousands of additional U.S. offshore account holders who have undisclosed accounts at UBS and other banks. Moreover, the publicity surrounding the Tax Division’s enforcement action and the subsequent settlement has already produced dramatic behavior changes. The IRS credits these two agreements with prompting an unprecedented number of taxpayers – nearly 18,000 in the 18-month period concluding in February 2011, in contrast to the fewer than 100 typical in previous years – to “come in from the cold” and voluntarily disclose to the IRS their previously hidden foreign accounts and also to agree to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to the U.S. Treasury. The continuing prosecutions of foreign-account holders and their facilitators created a favorable atmosphere for the IRS to roll out a second voluntary disclosure program on February 8, 2011. Also, buoyed by our success in the United States, a number of European countries have pressed Switzerland to provide similar account information for their nationals.

I wonder if such efforts may have some bearing on some people’s desires to see an end to the Obama administration.

It’s just bad analysis and faulty logic to draw the conclusions I’m reading from the graph above. “All things being equal” that might be valid, but all the other things effecting spending and revenue were not equal. Did revenues grow faster than spending in 1995-200 leading to a surplus because of the tax increases during the Clinton administration? Partly yes. But probably even bigger factors were; 1) the dot.com bubble was expanding and business was booming increasing revenues 2) Clinton only got us in one relatively cheap war instead of two expensive ones and, 3) he didn’t need to do any porkulus bills or otherwise deal with recovering from recessions.

The definition in my 10:35 link points out that neoconservatives ARE moderate conservatives. If you want to call out a particular person on a bad decision or bad policy, by all means do so. But your stated preference for moderate conservatives, as opposed to more hard-core conservatives, means that–hard as this may be to believe–YOU PREFER NEOCONSERVATIVES. You undoubtedly know of some bad decision makers, whom you and others have labeled “neocons.” But consider what a neoconservative really is, and you will likely find that most of the people to whom you object don’t fit the description.

Couple of great lines in Dr. Sowell’s column today:

Not since the days of slavery have so many people believed themselves entitled to the fruit of the labor of another, without compensation, on either side of the Atlantic.

During entire Obama administration there has not been a single day in which the total number of people in private employment equaled that of the last day of the Bush administration.

(As to the latter, the leftists have yet to appreciate the reasons: (1) ObamaCare, with its pending employer mandates, (2) Dodd-Frank, with its uncontrolled roving regulators about to be unleased on the business world, and (3) the pending largest tax increase in the history of the world, now set to occur Jan 1, 2013. Or maybe they are just in denial.)

I think the Rude Pundit sometimes goes a bit too far when criticizing conservative politicians.

His expectations of what ostensibly liberal politicians ought to say and do are a tad unrealistic.

That said–enjoy this, his latest: “What Obama Should Say 2012, Part 2 (Rude Version)”

If at tonight’s town hall presidential debate on CNN, some undecided voter in the audience asks Barack Obama to explain why the economy hasn’t improved quickly and he doesn’t say, “Well, that’s because you and many of your fellow voters were such pathetic pussies back in 2010. Let me explain this to you in simple terms since you are obviously brain-damaged or just plain dumb, or you just don’t give flying [fornication] about things like recent history or how the government actually works.

“See, in 2010, you voters decided that you were a bunch of cowards and you either stayed home or actually helped put Republicans into the majority in the House. This was on top of the mother[fornicators] in the Senate GOP who decided once Scott Brown was elected in January 2010 to filibuster pretty much everything that would actually help the economy. You did that, America. You decided that you were scared of the things I had campaigned on just back in 2008. the very things you voted me in to do. You believed the convenient lies of the Republicans, of the Tea Party, of Fox ‘news.’ Own that [excrement]. Own your mistakes.

It’s amusing to watch the discussion on this forum which inevitably reduces the political world to the back-and-forth of partisanship in the narrowest sense. Meanwhile the ruling elite continue to manipulate and steer the two-party system to suit its needs, secure in the knowledge that the masses will be either satisfied or frustrated depending on whether their ’side’ in the conflict prevails or loses.

It’s a brilliant means of social control, this two-party system, and one almost has to grudgingly admire it, even while lamenting its terrible effects.

Cons could care less what the facts are. All they know is what Karl Rove, Romney, Ryan and the media mouthpieces tell them. JM cites a GOP article that states Obama increased spending more than last five presidents Problem is it is based on percentage of GDP not actual spending with a down economy.. Cons will believe any garbage so you are wasting your time Jay. What really matters is Bain Capital which has Romney as an investor is still shipping jobs overseas and Romney is profiting off of this. His taxes will come down under his tax plan so that disqualifies him to be president- and if we had all his tax returns we could see how badly he has
screwed the government over with aggressive tax planning. There is nothing in this man’s background that would lead a rational person to believe he or his entire family would put US interests above there personal gain and safety.

When revenues fall in a business, the business must make reductions in spending or fail! And no, YOU CANNOT CONTINUE TO RAISE TAXES TO COVER THE COST OF FEEL GOOD USELESS SOCIALIST AGENDA PROGRAMS! And everyone should pay some income tax whether earning a million per year or 15 thousand per year. You can tell when people are really out of touch with reality when they do something like ummm….. scrub clean dishes for the sake of getting an action photo shot of doing manual labor.

er, did you happen to see that squiggly red line in the chart?

I don’t think anyone here is denying that a deficit exists.

Remember the Jessica Lynch story the Bush administration tried to spin. Remember when she came out and said “Wow when did that happen? I would have liked to have seen that movie”. Or the administrations hero building of Pat Tillman who it turned out had been killed by friendly fire.

You con’s need to stop all the nit picking of everything this administration does because you’ve got an 8 year cluster ***k that can be called up in an instant.

Didn’t the #2 & #3 AQ guy in Iraq get killed 8 times each?

….

Well, that #2 AQ guy always gets it. He’s got a crappier life expectancy than an ST redshirt.

The only person with worse life expectancy is the single Black character in a slasher movie. :)

Over at Kyle’s, I think about how I regard those who come in *here* heaping scorn upon the blog-host and insulting regulars, and try my best not to act in a similar fashion. I adopted a similar approach to Jim Wooten’s column, years back.

Then he has already used that page. Those dudes have been killed 10 or 12 times each.

Joking aside, I’m sure that the US military has actually killed their #2 & #3 guy numerous times, however I do wonder how many times the public was told that and it was speculation or bs.

That goes for Obama as well. Hate to be that cynical but it is good p.r. when it hits the news.

It amazes me that despite the evidence that is displayed for folks, Republicans continue to say Obama is on a spending spree, in fact over 90% of Obamas increase in spending was to stop the free fall in the economy. I worked on Wall Street and everyone knows that this recession that Bush put us in would be at best the slowest recovery since the Depression, bc Bush left us falling off a cliff and almost into economic abyss. If McCain was elected, there would have been no economy to even discuss. Obama is everyones savior that stopped the free fall and turned the economy around and on a recovery, the facts are there. Believe the facts, not the nonsense proproganda that Rommney and Ryan are putting out. If they are elected, watch us fall into abyss and you guys will get what you asked for smh.

Let’s not forget the trillion dollar tax cuts and medicare part d which was unfunded. There’s a whole laundry list of the previous administrations backward policy leading toward more debt. The biggest blunder? Iraq war, hands down a trillion dollar plus misadventure that vaults iran into the regional power, way to go george…

Ok, lets all look at the chart! I have money so my spending goes up and up. I said I have money and I did not say how I got it. Now as I spend the money I have becomes less so the spending levels out or tapers off. I dont have as much money now! I keep spending for whatever reason but fewer pricy things becaus I have less money but the spending continues. Look, at the line now its spiraling downward. My money is about gone! Liberals love charts because they are so visual and pretty.

WHAT JAY DOESNT SAY

OBAMA used the fact to increase spending with stimulus $ and supplemental budgets and ADDED them to the 2009 BUDGET which they attribute to BUSH

so he increases spending to high levels but because he adds it to 2009 budget he can BLAME BUSH

then for 2010 Budget………. Obama’s first…………. you keep spending at the 2009 LEVELS and say you are holding spending

Oh and somebody mentioned Hiliary Clinton! Lets have a few moments of silence for the four she had murdered and tried to cover it up with a video with Obama’s help. Now the guy who just made a video is in jail and the murderer continues to have a federal position. Yep that guy who made the video was not supposed to be on the internet. That deserves jail time but murdering four Americans is not worth the discusion. Liberals, arent they such a sweet bunch!

CORRECT

and no where did I say that $1.1 trillion was added to the 2009 budget………. the amount they added to the 2009 budget raised spending levels and they attrributed it to BUSH

once they RAISED the spending……. they then used 2009 as a BASELINE to spending for 2010 etc……

you can’t run from the fact that both parties use accounting tricks
