Journalists are taught never to become part of the story. Candy Crowley of CNN, moderator of tonight’s town-hall debate, has become part of the story, but in her case, I don’t think she has been given any choice.
From Politico:
In an interview with CNN this afternoon, Candy Crowley reiterated that, like past town-hall debate moderators, she intends to do more than just hold the microphone at tonight’s debate in Hempstead, N.Y. — an intention that has caused concern for both campaigns….
Crowley’s vision of her role at tonight’s debate is in keeping with past town hall debates, but it would defy the expectations agreed to by both campaigns in the co-signed memorandum of understanding, obtained and released yesterday by Time’s Mark Halperin. From section 7, part (c), sub-part (iv):
7. Additional Rules Apllicable to the October 16 Debate…
(c) With respect to all questions…
(iv) The moderator will not ask follow-up questions or comment on either the questions asked by the audience or the answers of the candidates during the debate or otherwise intervene in the debate except to acknowledge the questioners from the audience or enforce the time limits, and invite candidate comments during the 2 minute response period.
There is hardly any gray area here. Crowley is expected to do nothing except to acknowledge questioners, enforce the time limits, and invite candidate comments. Many people — especially journalists — would and have objected to that, but that’s the agreement.
That’s the agreement between the two campaigns. The sponsoring Commission on Presidential Debates did not agree to it. Crowley did not agree to it. If the two campaigns want somebody to handle the job the way they seem to want it handled, they should hire a game-show host, not a journalist.
“The commission and the moderator are not parties to” any agreement the campaigns may have, Frank Fahrenkopf, former chairman of the Republican National Committee and a debate commission co-chair, told the Washington Post. “She agreed to abide by the rules of the commission, not the campaigns.”
Good for the commission, and good for Crowley.
We’ll be here again tonight, live-blogging the debatee. As usual, I’ll post a new thread around 8 p.m., then begin commentary as the debate starts at 9.

Seems as though the parties want to continue the status quo of staging nothing but infomercials for their talking points. Hopefully, the people asking questions will not be sheep and play along with the facade. I’m wondering when the commission will quit playing favorites and allow ALL presidential candidates a chance to debate. Georgia has 4 people on the ballot, yet there have only been two people that have debated thus far. When do we get to hear from the other two?

“In the locker room a husband asked Bubba, a young stud with an enormous member: ‘I don’t mean to be too personal, but how did you get that big?’ Bubba laughed and said, ‘Every night before bed, I bang it on the bedpost three times. Heck, it impresses the girls at school!” The husband was excited at the simplicity of this technique and could hardly wait to try it himself. Before he climbed into bed that night, he whipped it out and banged it on the bedpost three times. He was just climbing into bed with newfound confidence when his wife sits up, half-asleep and rubbing her eyes, and says, ‘Bubba, is that you?”"

He did not even know some was for scrubbers for Coal Power Plants…
That 90 billion for green energy was spread out over many years,,,and
included money for upgrades to Coal Power Plants to install exhaust
cleaners….and clean up the coal exhaust…
Remember Mitt Romney likes Coal….and another thing..
We use 75% of our oil for transportation and we currently get..from a 42
gallon barrel of black oil..
16 gallons of gasoline 40% by volume..
8 gallons diesel fuel 20% by volume..
4 gallons jet fuel 10% by volume..
We have bio-engineered versions of green algae that produce 80% diesel
by volume…and we have similar versions for gasoline and jet fuel…
Exxon is investing in Algae oil…
Obama is pushing Algae development..we can grow our own oil…less risky

Fox News is reporting that Candy Crowley’s desperate need to marginalize everyday American voters and steal the spotlight for herself during tonight’s debate has just been formalized. Altering the original agreement with the debate commission, and under intense media pressure, both Obama and Romney have agreed to answer any questions asked by Ms. Crowley and her over-sized ego.
Bottom line: When a moderator works this hard to become part of the story, something is terribly, terribly wrong.

I expect Obama to come after Mitt’s positions more tonight than the last debate (which essentially be one sentence), but he too will offer ambiguous generalities about what his plans are for the future. He will try to win points about Mitt’s so called ‘$5 trillion tax cut’, yet will be unable to answer how and why the national debt has added $5 trillion under his administration.
The person who wins tonight’s debate will be the one who doesn’t self destruct.

What about “you didn’t build that”?
I’ll defend that statement any day of the week and twice on Sundays. It was an accurate statement about government’s crucial role in building infrastructure for a prosperous country, in a speech that included praise for America’s entrepreneurs.
So, is the notion that Mitt would seize upon a foreign policy crisis to work to his advantage, a distortion of what he actually meant? Here it is, in context, you tell me:
——————
Audience member: If you get the call as president, and you had hostages…Ronald Reagan was able to make a statement, even before he became, was actually sworn in—
Romney: Yeah—
Audience member: the hostages were released—
Romney: on the day of his inauguration, yeah.
Audience member: So my question is, really, how can you sort of duplicate that scenario?
Romney: Ohhhh. [A few chuckles in audience.] I’m gonna ask you, how do I duplicate that scenario.
Audience member: I think that had to do with the fact that the Iranians perceived Reagan would do something to really get them out. In other words [unintelligible]…and that’s why I’m suggesting that something that you say over the next few months gets the Iranians to understand that their pursuit of the bomb is something that you would predict and I think that’s something that could possibly resonate very well with American Republican voters.
Romney: I appreciate the idea. I can’t—one of the other things that’s frustrating to me is that at a typical day like this, when I do three or four events like this, the number of foreign policy questions that I get are between zero and one. And the American people are not concentrated at all on China, on Russia, Iran, Iraq. This president’s failure to put in place a status forces agreement allowing 10-20,000 troops to stay in Iraq? Unthinkable! And yet, in that election, in the Jimmy Carter election, the fact that we have hostages in Iran, I mean, that was all we talked about. And we had the two helicopters crash in the desert, I mean that’s—that was—that was the focus, and so him solving that made all the difference in the world. I’m afraid today if you said, “We got Iran to agree to stand down a nuclear weapon,” they’d go hold on. It’s really a, but…by the way, if something of that nature presents itself, I will work to find a way to take advantage of the opportunity.

I believe Romney will win this one, unless there’s someone to call him out on when he contradicts a prior statement of his (i.e., lies). It’s really hard to beat someone who doesn’t seem to have any consistent position on any issue for more than a few hours and will say whatever it takes to win. Is he for access to birth control or not? Does he think the the other 49 states aren’t good enough for the health plan, Romneycare, HE sponsored in Mass.? Is he going to cut taxes or is he going to get rid of deductions that affect the middle class, such as mortgage interest, and, in effect, raise taxes? Is he going to cut spending or is he going to raise spending on the military and leave Medicare alone? He is truly a slippery one, that Willard Mitt Romney, and there are a lot of people, like those who think wrasslin’ is real and buying gold coins from Glenn Beck will make them rich, who buy it hook, line and sinker.

It is a tough questions for Obama to answer, because it requires him to admit that he failed to deliver a key promise to the American people he made on the campaign trail 4 years ago. He also promised to reduce the deficit in half in his first term (4 straight years of $1 trillion deficits).

“It is a tough questions for Obama to answer, because it requires him to admit that he failed to deliver a key promise to the American people he made on the campaign trail 4 years ago. He also promised to reduce the deficit in half in his first term (4 straight years of $1 trillion deficits). ”
Seems to me brouhahas like this are why politicians avoid giving straight answers or stating goals or making promises. Because the opponent will count on people not remembering context or being willfully ignorant of the fact there must might be another branch of government required to make it happen.
For the record, I’ve been critical of the early Pres Obama for being too slow out of the gate, too much punting to Congress to flesh out the specifics of his visions. But…. something like ‘but he promised to cut the deficit in half!!” strikes me as a pretty nonsensical thing to fixate upon. It’s about in the same league as “but he PROMISED he’d close GITMO!!!”

Mr. Shockley asserts: “It’s like if a judge in a civil trial over a legal contract said he/she would not be bound by the terms of the contract.”
Actually, it’s nothing like that. The purpose of a legal contract between two entities is to designate the responsibilities of each entity.
The purpose of this so-called “debate” is to elucidate — for the American people — our choices for President. Without a moderator to hold them accountable for their answers, they need only spew any old nonsense they think we want to hear with as much enthusiasm as they can. We have Super PACS purchasing ad time to give us that already.

My first impression of Crowley is, she needs to go on a diet (that should rev up a Moonbat or two). Next, if both campaigns want her to basically keep her mouth shut, she should do just that or step aside.
The debate is for the people; not what a journalist thinks the people want. As has been seen time and time again in the campaign, almost all the so-called journalists don’t have a clue. They just know they want Obama.

Stevie Ray: In terms of non-roads an bridges the top 5 percent paid 37 % of income taxes in 1980 and 57 percent now..the top 20% pay 87% or more of total tax revenue.
And you fall for the GOP talking point hook, line, and sinker. You give up any right to truth when you start trying to split up the different taxes. When looking ONLY at federal income taxes, it seems that the wealthy are getting screwed. However, when you look at the ENTIRE picture, the story changes.
This entire conversation is the result of a (largely successful) effort to redefine the debate over taxes from “how much in taxes do you pay” to “how much in federal income taxes do you pay?” This is good framing if you want to cut taxes on the rich. It’s bad framing if you want to have even a basic understanding of who pays how much in taxes.
There’s a reason some would prefer that more limited conversation. For most Americans, payroll and state and local taxes make up the majority of their tax bill. The federal income tax, by contrast, is our most progressive tax — it’s the tax we’ve designed to place the heaviest burden on the rich while bypassing the poor. And we’ve done that, again, because the working class is already paying a fairly high tax bill through payroll and state and local taxes.
….
Which is why, if you want to understand who’s paying what in taxes, you don’t want to just look at federal income taxes, or federal payroll taxes, or state sales taxes — you want to look at total taxes.
…. the poorer you are, the more state and local taxes bite into your income. As you get richer, those taxes recede, and you’re mainly getting hit be federal taxes. So that’s another lesson: When you omit state and local taxes from your analysis, you’re omitting the taxes that hit lower-income taxpayers hardest.
Here’s what the tax burden actually looks like when you account for ALL taxes.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/files/2012/09/total-tax-bill-income.jpg

As I’ve listened to all the general criticisms over ‘denial of additional security” and “Repubs cut $300 million” I’ve wondered
- what was that $300 mil designated for? Worldwide? Regional? One or two specific sites?
- what additional security did the security teams in Benghazi request?
- most importantly, IF the requests had been implemented, would it have prevented or repulsed the attack?
Here’s the crux of the issue.
“But Nordstrom partially shot holes in the GOP argument on Wednesday by acknowledging to the panel’s chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), that even with the additional security forces, the attack wouldn’t have been prevented.
“The ferocity and intensity of the attack was nothing that we had seen in Libya, or that I had seen in my time in the Diplomatic Security Service,” Nordstrom said.
“Having an extra foot of wall, or an extra-half dozen guards or agents would not have enabled us to respond to that kind of assault,” Nordstrom said at Wednesday’s hearing.”

If Candy was conservative, Jay would be crowing about the injustice and the potential bias of her intervention as a moderator. But as Candy is far left, he has no problem with her intervening in what he thinks will be Obama’s behalf. One thing is for sure; Bidens immature and sad performance last week turned this country off on him and tonights debate will have no impact at all on this election as there are no undecided voters out there now. Obama’s sorry record has caught up with him and he can’t run and hide behind Bush or Bain or Romney’s wealth or anything else. The first debate nailed the coffin shut for what is left of the Obama campaign but in reality this country was turning on Obama way before the first debate. Even the most politically un-involved people in this country, in some rudimentary way, understand that we cannot continue to spend money as Obama is doing and expect to have a shelter over our heads and to have food on our table. His promises are built upon nothing but spending money we don’t have and even the dullest of the electorate understand that cannot last.
On another note, why does Georgia still have a “blue law” against alcohol sales on Election day when we now have early voting? If strictly applied shouldn’t alcohol sales be restricted from the beginning day of early voting to after election day? Yep, that would go over well.

The candidates don’t stop at the lights anyway. You ask Romney any question and he will start speaking on his talking points. When is your birthday? And he says I am so glad you ask that question and I too am unset at the death of an American diplomat. The GOP would love to have JL back. Romney starts cranking up an Obama sounding position, uses all his time and then some and JL does not allow Obama to respond to this new subject matter or this new candidate that has walked into the ring. Candy will not allow these misrepresentations of Romney’s positions to go unchallenged. (O has not tried to change his position once in this election so there is no credibility problem with O) O could actually still be polite and call Romney a liar; there will be plenty of air time for that. You shouldn’t be able to win a presidential debate lying, no matter how good they think you sound or look. You now figure you have your base so you now become Obama to get his. The darkest year in the history of Penn State University has served to bring the campus together like never before. And now it’s united for another tragic reason: a life-threatening injury to one of its students.
On Saturday night, sophomore cheerleader Paige Raque fell 39 feet out of a fifth-story window in the apartment building where she lives. She is now in critical condition at a local hospital. There is no short-term or long-term prognosis yet.
“This morning she did show some signs of movement,” Randy Jepson told Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday. Jepson, who is acting as the Raque family spokesman, coaches Paige’s older brother, Parker, on the Penn State gymnastics team. He is also the father of Paige’s freshman year roommate.
“She did open her eyes a bit,” Jepson said. “It is a very slow recovery process.”

Conservatives – Crowley is a fat, fat, fat liberal woman who “worked very hard” to create this controversy according to her own leftist agenda. And she’s fat.
Nonconservatives – What’s the big deal? Who cares? In fact, why should campaigns be allowed to control the terms of a debate where we want to hear how they respond and react? What’s wrong with follow-up questions? Again, what’s the big deal?

Just a guess, but what made Everybody’s and Jaggers special was that they were essentially college hangouts and Emory, being a draw for aspiring docs and lawyers was a magnet for those from the NE so they had to do pizza right. The Va. Highlands area had The Silver Grill, and who could compete with that?

I had just come off a project in Austin and I was kind of burnt out on ‘cue, and since KC is known for steaks, I’d have an early steak supper every Friday before catching my plane back home. I interrogated the waiters a LOT because I wanted to smarten up about steaks; if they didn’t know the answer, they’d ask the kitchen the question and then come back and tell me the answer.
I had never heard of “blue rare” until my steak-sploration in KC.
