Candy Crowley right to stick to her debate guns
Journalists are taught never to become part of the story. Candy Crowley of CNN, moderator of tonight’s town-hall debate, has become part of the story, but in her case, I don’t think she has been given any choice.
From Politico:
In an interview with CNN this afternoon, Candy Crowley reiterated that, like past town-hall debate moderators, she intends to do more than just hold the microphone at tonight’s debate in Hempstead, N.Y. — an intention that has caused concern for both campaigns….
Crowley’s vision of her role at tonight’s debate is in keeping with past town hall debates, but it would defy the expectations agreed to by both campaigns in the co-signed memorandum of understanding, obtained and released yesterday by Time’s Mark Halperin. From section 7, part (c), sub-part (iv):
7. Additional Rules Apllicable to the October 16 Debate…
(c) With respect to all questions…
(iv) The moderator will not ask follow-up questions or comment on either the questions asked by the audience or the answers of the candidates during the debate or otherwise intervene in the debate except to acknowledge the questioners from the audience or enforce the time limits, and invite candidate comments during the 2 minute response period.
There is hardly any gray area here. Crowley is expected to do nothing except to acknowledge questioners, enforce the time limits, and invite candidate comments. Many people — especially journalists — would and have objected to that, but that’s the agreement.
That’s the agreement between the two campaigns. The sponsoring Commission on Presidential Debates did not agree to it. Crowley did not agree to it. If the two campaigns want somebody to handle the job the way they seem to want it handled, they should hire a game-show host, not a journalist.
“The commission and the moderator are not parties to” any agreement the campaigns may have, Frank Fahrenkopf, former chairman of the Republican National Committee and a debate commission co-chair, told the Washington Post. “She agreed to abide by the rules of the commission, not the campaigns.”
Good for the commission, and good for Crowley.
We’ll be here again tonight, live-blogging the debatee. As usual, I’ll post a new thread around 8 p.m., then begin commentary as the debate starts at 9.

As I’ve listened to all the general criticisms over ‘denial of additional security” and “Repubs cut $300 million” I’ve wondered
- what was that $300 mil designated for? Worldwide? Regional? One or two specific sites?
- what additional security did the security teams in Benghazi request?
- most importantly, IF the requests had been implemented, would it have prevented or repulsed the attack?
Here’s the crux of the issue.
“But Nordstrom partially shot holes in the GOP argument on Wednesday by acknowledging to the panel’s chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), that even with the additional security forces, the attack wouldn’t have been prevented.
“The ferocity and intensity of the attack was nothing that we had seen in Libya, or that I had seen in my time in the Diplomatic Security Service,” Nordstrom said.
“Having an extra foot of wall, or an extra-half dozen guards or agents would not have enabled us to respond to that kind of assault,” Nordstrom said at Wednesday’s hearing.”

If Candy was conservative, Jay would be crowing about the injustice and the potential bias of her intervention as a moderator. But as Candy is far left, he has no problem with her intervening in what he thinks will be Obama’s behalf. One thing is for sure; Bidens immature and sad performance last week turned this country off on him and tonights debate will have no impact at all on this election as there are no undecided voters out there now. Obama’s sorry record has caught up with him and he can’t run and hide behind Bush or Bain or Romney’s wealth or anything else. The first debate nailed the coffin shut for what is left of the Obama campaign but in reality this country was turning on Obama way before the first debate. Even the most politically un-involved people in this country, in some rudimentary way, understand that we cannot continue to spend money as Obama is doing and expect to have a shelter over our heads and to have food on our table. His promises are built upon nothing but spending money we don’t have and even the dullest of the electorate understand that cannot last.
On another note, why does Georgia still have a “blue law” against alcohol sales on Election day when we now have early voting? If strictly applied shouldn’t alcohol sales be restricted from the beginning day of early voting to after election day? Yep, that would go over well.

I would certainly go for that as an opening…this whole last four years has been stymied by a begin all-end all stance by the GOP and its nut fringe toadies of getting him out of office…I didn’t go dancing in the streets when he was elected, either and you and others will recall, and it took me nearly four years to quit spitting nearly every time I heard his name, but the last thing I wanted was for him to fail…and, again just my unlettered and uninformed opinion, but he’s done a pretty good job, all things considered…

On certain things, yes I would say leaning. Others probably further left and yet other things probably a centrists. Overall left of center.
When you start your narrative from the far right or far left corner of the universe, it can become difficult to think anything that isn’t remotely close isn’t the other extreme.
Where one is standing, regardless of how they classify themselves, plays a huge part in how they view right, center and left.

Because, by that example, the accountant was not knowledgeable about situations that would generate deductions. But his accountant was knowledgeable and Romney knew there was not a deduction available for shipping jobs overseas, so on that basis there was not advantage.

Candy Crowley is very good at what she does and she is a good choice to moderate the debate. However I hope her decision to embellish the questions doesn’t mean she’ll change the questions, or add another question (hers) to the question.
If she starts that the candidates need to call her on it immediately, like “Candy that actually was not the question from the audience”.

Crowley is kind of a beefy heifer, probably with a temper to match and all of this talk about feminist freedom takes away from the real purpose of the evening…. to look at the prospective candidates. This whole event is not about Ms. Crowley and her journalistic abilities nor her freedom to “express herself” We are electing a president here, not running a popularity contest on the best female “journalist of the debates”. The candidates don’t stop at the lights anyway. You ask Romney any question and he will start speaking on his talking points. When is your birthday? And he says I am so glad you ask that question and I too am unset at the death of an American diplomat. The GOP would love to have JL back. Romney starts cranking up an Obama sounding position, uses all his time and then some and JL does not allow Obama to respond to this new subject matter or this new candidate that has walked into the ring. Candy will not allow these misrepresentations of Romney’s positions to go unchallenged. (O has not tried to change his position once in this election so there is no credibility problem with O) O could actually still be polite and call Romney a liar; there will be plenty of air time for that. You shouldn’t be able to win a presidential debate lying, no matter how good they think you sound or look. You now figure you have your base so you now become Obama to get his. You somewhere have to lose your monetary support or admit you pray to that god instead of the one you are selling tonight.

They are starting on Crowley because they know she won’t be the substitute teacher Jim Leah was. I think O kept thinking someone was going to cut Romney off when he was singing like a socialist and say get a grip of yourself cowboy, but it didn’t happen. It would have worked a lot better is the moderator didn’t force Obama down into the mud, the only other route to equally Romney. Hell that man lied so much that night I not even sure his name was Romney. It was like the body snatchers where the guy looked like Romney, but the Benson line would have played well. Bookman does something Rush doesn’t, he uses facts and challenges you to prove him wrong.
Romney and Rush use lies and challenge you to have enough guts to call them out on it. It is like a bunch of drunks surrounding you in a bar. The early voting exit polling is very telling. Not one voter has said they voted for Obama. Not one. My neighbor just got back from her early voting trip. I asked her. She said that she voted for Romney and that everyone waiting in line were carrying signs and shouting for Romney. She didn’t see anyone who said they voted for Obama. Not one stinking vote. It’s going to be a total landslide like the Mondale campaign.
A television reporter just reported that Candy is gargling, and using extra hair spray, makeup, and she’s having trouble deciding on which outfit to wear. Nerves, Candy. Nerves.

Coulter was right. When the liberal mob has nothing to offer, they insult, demean, vilify and shout louder than the competition. It never ends. Why do we think it ever will?
So when the right has something can we expect to see a lack of insults, demeaning, villifying and shouting louder. Then again, the right would first need to have something so never mind.
