Last week, a better-than-expected jobs report inspired scoffing among those to whom good economic news is bad political news, including suggestions that the government numbers had somehow been cooked as part of a political conspiracy.
That doesn’t seem to have been the case, as economic data continue to surprise on the upside, from government as well as private economic sources, and across economic sectors:
The economy is improving more than professional forecasters anticipated, particularly in data on employment and housing, according to the Bloomberg Economic Surprise Index, which compares 38 indicators with analysts’ predictions. The index, based on gauges compiled by private businesses and trade groups in addition to government, confirms U.S. growth is generating jobs in the face of a global slowdown and looming federal spending cuts and tax increases known as the fiscal cliff.
“The economy is improving, and the labor market is getting better,” said Robert Brusca, president of Fact & Opinion Economics and a former New York Fed economist. “These numbers are what they are, they’re not being slanted. On a scale of one to 10, the economy is at a fairly firm six and may be heading higher….”
From Reuters, on consumer sentiment:
The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan’s preliminary October reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment came in at 83.1, up from 78.3 the month before, and the highest since September 2007, the survey showed on Friday.
The new buoyancy among consumers comes shortly after the U.S. unemployment rate tumbled to its lowest in nearly four years in September as more people returned to the workforce and found jobs than economists had predicted.
“We are getting some quite interesting signals from consumer sentiment and employment data – both (the) unemployment rate and initial claims – that there has been some quite significant improvement in the economy,” said David Sloan, an economist at 4Cast in New York.
From the Census Bureau on retail sales:
WASHINGTON — Retail sales rose a larger-than-expected 1.1% in September as consumers shook off fears of looming economic problems and continued to boost their spending after pulling back earlier this year.
The new data Monday came as the Commerce Department revised August’s increase in retail sales to 1.2% from the earlier estimate of 0.9%. That meant the rise in August was the largest monthly gain since October 2010.
Economists had expected a 0.8% increase in September, according to a survey by Bloomberg. Retail sales last month were up 5.4% from a year earlier. Sales for the three-month period ending in September were up 4.8% from the same quarter in 2011.
From Business Insider, on housing:
Despite some nagging doubts that have remained over the U.S. housing market, consensus is that housing has turned the corner and is recovering.
In his latest note titled The Housing Recovery Is For Real, Deutsche Bank’s Joseph LaVorgna writes that the “residential housing market is in the very early stages of a durable recovery.”
LaVorgna says this recovery in housing is important because housing is what led the U.S. economy into a recession, and is part of the reason the recovery has been so slow. Moreover, as “a leading indicator of underlying domestic demand,” any improvement in housing suggests that underlying domestic demand should improve as well. From Lavorgna:
‘…. At minimum, the strength in residential construction suggests it is unlikely that underlying domestic demand will weaken further. This provides us with some comfort that the recent sub-par performance in the economy is not long lasting and that over time, domestic demand will strengthen, perhaps as concern over Europe fades a bit and the “fiscal cliff” is adequately dealt with.’ “
From Fitch Ratings, on housing construction:
Fitch Ratings raised its projection for single-family starts and new-home sales this year, but warned housing growth could be somewhat less robust in 2013.
The ratings company expects single-family housing starts to improve about 19% in 2012, with new-home sales and existing-home sales increasing 19.5% and 8.5%, respectively.
Fitch, last month, forecast a 12% rise in single-family housing starts, 10.5% growth in new-home sales and a 5.6% bump in existing-home sales.
Fitch said the year-over-year gains for single-family starts and new-home sales earlier this year have sustained momentum. Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted statistics for single-family starts, new homes and existing-home sales have also been advancing most months.
From Ward’s Automotive Group, the auto industry newsletter, reporting a surge in fourth-quarter auto production in North America:
Hot on the heels of an estimated 20,300-unit September production shortfall, North American car and truck assembly plants are embarking on an even more robust fourth-quarter program than the one put in place a month ago.
Although Ford has not yet revealed what revisions it has in store for October-December, the rest of the industry already has boosted production plans by some 53,900 units for the period.
The bulk of the increase is set to occur this month with 61,700 units added to the October slate, some of which likely were deferred from September and some pulled forward from December’s plan, now 16,400 units lower than it was a month ago.
But, even assuming the entire September and December downward volume adjustments are included in this month’s higher schedule, that still means an additional 16,700 vehicles in the October boost, on top of which some 8,600 units have been added to the November plan.
The largest Q4 increase comes from General Motors, up 18,500 units, mostly cars, including gains of 26,000 in October and 3,000 in November, followed by a 10,500-unit cut in its December slate…
Incorporating the revised outlook, North American plants now are in line to build some 15,692,200 cars and trucks this year, up 16.5% from 2011’s 13,471,500 completions.

It has also (as this column shows) “inspired” the making of mountains out of molehills among those to whom good economic news is good political news for those who wish to spin it for political advantage (like Jay).

Interesting how politicians and all of us typically suggest the government has material control over this…this of course is not the case.
Jay, do you suppose the average unemployed person or underemployed give a flip about data that is not remotely related to their well being….if we assume the unemployment including underemployment is around 15%, that’s a lot of discouraged folks who could care less about these fancy, often partisan measures..What about the 14% unemployment number among african americans?
Good signs but these will not resonate with those currently facing difficulty..

As good as it sounds, and I do believe certain parts of the economy are doing better, but considering we have been in the bottom for the past four or five years, it is not surprising. sooner are later a car / vehicle has to be replaced, the washer or dryer gives out, the HVAC system needs reparing or replacing..but the question remains, is this truly a trend or a blimp on the screen. another question not addressed by this data at what cost is the economic forecost…are the purchasers going back into debt they cannot afford nor pay for, has medium income for all increased, will the continued national debt eating away at the GDP have a future affect…ahhh..a little data and we are now all driving lexus’s and vacationing in the tropics…hang on the cliff is only five more miles!!

Because 1) getting part-time or even full time work at a fraction of what you used to make in a totally different field – just to get by – is nothing to feel positive about 2) people need career jobs and for that to happen the economy is going to have to improve DRAMATICALLY more than the month or two “bounce” we see from time to time 3) for anyone that reads the news, the larger picture is pretty bleak and anyone who suggests otherwise without a clean and viable plan for recovery is smoking weed.

“3.5M private sector jobs created over the last two years”? But, as usual, you are leaving out the best part. For every private sector job that Bozo “created”, someone left the jobs hunt. Those people that left are conveniently left out of the unemployment figures. And “those improving jobs numbers” are related to part time workers, many due to the holiday season, and government jobs. Nothing substantial. Cooked numbers? Possibly not but a good through look at jobs picture? Not on your life. Just leave out the parts that don’t fit with your scenario and make it look as good as possible for your candidate. That’s called being a hack.

Both parties joined together didn’t make as much difference as market forces, and some markets taking advantage of limited regulation. (that both parties were paid to ignore).
The story would have been the same under McCain (sorry, no link available for my opinion there).

If I may take that question in another direction. News like this can make people feel more comfortable about shopping in the Holiday season. The better the shopping is the the more hope the economy has to gain solid momentum.
However if after the election the next big saturation story is all negative about the fiscal cliff people might be more unlikely to make some feel good purchases.

I just hope that Gov. Romney is not elected President because if he is, he will most certainly try to take credit for the economic turnaround, unfairly.
Last week Paul Krugman wrote that – if Republicans had not opposed President Obama’s Jobs Bill last year – the unemployment rate would now be under 7%.
Citizens should consider what Obama inherited and what he has accomplished, without any Republican support, to turn our economy around before they cast their votes in November.

Apples to apples is the best comparison. If you are willing to compare The unadjusted numbers from last September and this September and tell us that they indicate things are getting better then by all means do so.
You do not know what seasonal adjustments are being made and neither do I.
Tell us what things in your everyday life are seasonally adjusted. The groceries you buy? What about the gas? Your paycheck?
Do you think there is a proven list of seasonal adjustments? If so we would not have all the major revisions in numbers each time we turn around would we?
So as I stated, before you swallow the bait, look at some other data.
If the economy was doing well, do you really think you would need to tell anyone? Do you really think you would need to rely on seasonally adjusted numbers to confirm things?
Rational individuals would say no.
Seasonal adjustments are easily tweaked to come to the desired results.
Can’t do that with the non-seasonally adjusted data.

Coincidence that all this “positive” economic data comes from the gub’ment just in time for early voting? I would argue that this data is supporting an economy that is flat at best. There will be month to month fluctuations based on the time of year. Summer months are always slower than say October.
And December (Christmas) should be better than October. How much better is this October compared to October a year ago? Up slightly is just not good enough when the Fed debt has been increased by $6,000,000,000,000 during the Obama regime.

In related news the Nobel committee has awarded the Nobel prize in economics to the democratic presidents who served since 1928. This award recognizes the increase in the value of Publicly traded companies during that period as measured by the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The individual contributions were: Roosevelt/Truman – +230; Kennedy/Johnson – +280; Carter – 0; Clinton – +7,600; Obama – +5,400. Total – +13,510. The techniques employed by these presidents included reasonable financial regulations and use of Keynesian economics to stimulate growth during times of weak private demand.
The comparison was drawn to the changes in the value of publicly traded companies during the terms of republican presidents since 1928. Hoover – -260; Eisenhower – +370; Nixon/Ford – +20; Reagan/Bush1 – +2,350; Bush2 – -2,900. Total – -160. The techniques employed by these presidents included financial deregulation, and supply side economics.
In view of the final score of +13,510 to -160 the committee awarded this prize by acclamation.

When Krugman stated – before any others had done so – WHY Republicans deliberately ran up the deficit in the 2000s and his ideas coincided with the very same reasons I had been thinking but had been reticent to post because they were controversial, I knew I could trust his thinking. And, I certainly would never trust anything the “Daily Caller” puts forth. I see that media outlet as a “propaganda machine” for the unsuspecting and unaware.

But your “touchy” response suggests either my moniker or post (or both) touched a nerve.
As for the WSJ article to which you linked, are you suggesting that Klugman plagiarized it? In any event, even the HP has enough sense to recognize the disclaimer in the article:
To be sure, playing the numbers game with jobs data is a tricky business. If the government hadn’t cut jobs, the WSJ points out, then fewer people would’ve left the workforce, pushing up the share of people actively searching for work. So maybe the rate wouldn’t have dropped.

I have no doubt that that is your opinion, Stevie Ray.
You may not know this, but I have been reading the New York Times and agreeing with most of its opinions since I lived in NYC as a young woman from 1963 -1970. (I had my liberal leaning views, btw, before I ever moved to NYC from Georgia. About checking out other economists: Like Paul Newman said of JoAnne Woodward, his wife and fellow thespian, “Why should I look around for hamburger when I have steak at home?!” (I don’t think Woodward was especially fond of Newman’s musings where she was compared to cuts of meat!
I have limited time in my day. I have seen much BS spin over the years, so I don’t need to “balance” Krugman’s thoughts in economics with many others. If I earned my living as a journalist I would of course need to read extensively in these areas, but since I don’t, I know what I think and have thought over the years. I think for myself. Krugman views just happen to mirror most of my own thinking. And, of course, I try to learn from his more extensive knowledge in the area or economics. The fact that he is a Nobel Prize winner in economics doesn’t hurt, either.

There Is No Nobel Prize in Economics
The award’s real name is the “Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.” It was not established by Nobel, but supposedly in memory of Nobel. It’s a ruse and a PR trick, and I mean that literally. And it was done completely against the wishes of the Nobel family.

In a 2003 article, The Economist noted that Krugman’s critics argue that “his relentless partisanship is getting in the way of his argument”. Promises broken that meant the most to me: “the days of lobbyist controlling the DC agenda are over…” and if you recall he was going to prosecute Wall Street and Telecom….the outcome was the former ended up being one of his biggests contributors and the latter, despite his promise to push a filibuster to make sure telecom paid for its illegal wire tapping, he got cash from them and then pushed a bill through that actually granted telecom immunity for the eavedropping…

Krugman has made his share of horrible predictions, generally in effort to continue as BO’s economic champion…he projected 4% growth (its around 1.7 % and holding steady), he suggested that the 911 NYC attacks would do some economic good, he said in 2010 that every single thing the right said about why Obamanomics would fail was wrong. A country that is 16 trillion in debt has no economic good news. Our debt has now surpassed our GDP which is a barrier that, once broken, means that the nation is in really, really bad shape and there is practically no way to go back. But your real goal is only to delay the bad news until after the election, isn’t it Jay? There are 47 million people in this country on foodstamps and the able bodied working population who actually have a job is at a low we haven’t seen in decades. It seems that you and the leftists want nothing but Obama to be re-elected and in your minds, after that happens, the daisies will bloom and the unicorns will fly and everything will be alright again. If he is re-elected, the jubilation won’t last long as the reality of where we are at as a nation will come crashing down on all of us. He will do nothing but exacerbate the problem by enacting un-ending expansion of government (and destruction of personnal freedom) and more and more deficit spending to maintain this government control because these are all he knows to do. Obama and the liberals use entitlements as a means to enslave those people who don’t want to work and that don’t have any personnal pride or dignity and who are fine with getting everything they have from someone else. It is an age old liberal tactic that hasn’t changed since the sixties and apparently it is working. In a few days we will know which way this country will go. Four more years of Obama will finish this country off and Orwell’s prediction of no personnal freedom because of “Big Brother” will finally prove to accurate.

After the good news of the unemployment rate dropping to 7.8%, the talking heads at CNBC screamed about people dropping out of the work force. They want you to think that they dropped out because they gave up looking for work. I think that some of the drop in the work force might be due to a number of baby boomers that had been laid off and looking for work because their retirement accounts were so decimated after the crash in 2008. My 401K is up 12% for the year and I still have about 30% in cash and bonds. So, yes there may be a number of retirement aged folks that have dropped out because they now have a retirement account again.

To me, such a question is a bit of a red herring. The central fact is that we have been operating a a serious deficit the past four years and, as a result, our debt is now over 16 trillion. I am not at all convinced that Obama understands what it means to operate in the red year after year. A business man surely does. Which brings us to the economic level. The deficits that Bush ran up in the years in which the country was teetering on the verge of a serious recession had the beneficial effect of righting the economy. In that sense, deficits not only didn’t matter, but were a force for economic good.

Half Truths Half Lies
The great American taxpayer is a victim of politicians and media who are held to no standards. A broker lies- fines and prison a doctor screws up- massive law suit Journalist lie and tell half truths- crickets chirp because that is what is expected. Here a major person at the AJC cuts and paste to “prove” himself without any thought to demonstrate the good and the bad and use his two brain cells to then convince the reader. If it weren’t so sad it would be funny.
From Forbes
In the latest, much celebrated, unemployment report, the labor force participation rate had plummeted to 63.7%, the most rapid decline in U.S. history. That means that under President Obama nearly 5 million Americans have fled the workforce in hopeless despair
From Bloomberg
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s general economic index missed analysts’ expectations. It was minus 6.2 in October. The median forecast of 46 economists in a Bloombergsurvey called for a gain to minus 4. The figure was minus 10.4 in September, the lowest level since April 2009. The index covers New York, northern New Jersey and southern Connecticut.
“The economic outlook is worrying and that has hit the demand side of the equation,” said Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at the Price Futures Group in Chicago.
From Reuters
Investors are wondering just how high – and for how long -
the Fed may allow inflation to rise to encourage borrowing,
investment and hiring. In theory, more people working means
higher output, which should narrow the gap between what American
workers are currently producing and their potential.
“The Fed’s body language clearly says they think the output
gap is huge and that they’re willing to take risks on
inflation,” said Bluford Putnam, chief economist at futures

Romney Is Attacked by His Father’s Longtime Aide
By MICHAEL BARBARO
A longtime aide to George W. Romney issued a harshly worded critique of Mitt Romney, accusing him of shifting political positions in “erratic and startling ways” and failing to live up to the distinguished record of his father, the former governor of Michigan.
Walter De Vries, who worked for the senior Mr. Romney throughout the 1960s, wrote that Mitt Romney’s bid for the White House was “a far cry from the kind of campaign and conduct, as a public servant, I saw during the seven years I worked in George Romney’s campaigns and served him as governor.”
“While it seems that Mitt would say and do anything to close a deal – or an election,” he wrote, “George Romney’s strength as a politician and public officeholder was his ability and determination to develop and hold consistent policy positions over his life.”
Mr. De Vries’s stinging assessment was contained in a nearly 700-word essay that he distributed to a small group of journalists with whom he has spoken over the past year. He said it was an outline for a book that may or may not be published. A spokeswoman for the Romney campaign declined to comment.
A registered independent, who said he voted for Barack Obama in 2008, Mr. De Vries has previously expressed reservations about Mr. Romney’s political postures in interviews, but never with such sweep.

“Syria is a mess”
And the best we can do is to stay the hell out of it as much as possible…what could Obama do? Other than be prepared for perhaps millions of refugees. He has drawn his red line if the Assad regime uses WMDs on its own people…
“Egypt is a mess”
It’s a mess of their own making and, again, non-intervention seems the most pragmatic. What should /could he have done?
“Iran is a mess”
And has been for some time. He let Netanyahu literally draw the red line. Meanwhile, he’s stepped up the sanctions which, it appears, are having an effect on the domestic front inside Iran…
“Taliban will be back in power in Afghanistan soon, Al Queda growth is significant”
My jury is out with Obama on Afghanistan…
” Israeli relations a problem,”
Barack and Bibi are as thick as thieves on this one…same page, same line…
“Turkey is now shooting weapons into Syria”
The Obama foreign policy, more or less it seems, was to pass the ball to Turkey and follow their lead…what else could/should he have done?
“..and Libya is soon to be controlled by al queda…”
The President of Libya as a pro American moderate. The new Prime Minister now forming the government is a pro-French secular liberal. The Libyans turned out in the tens of thousands to make the point that they were grateful to the West for what it had done for them and that this was NOT the direction they were willing to let their revolution go. The fundamentalists have been unsuccessful at the polls and the Libyan people outspoken in their rejection of the theocrats “telling us how to be ‘good Muslims.’
“..it appears BO and his appointees bungled ambassador situation and prematurely postulated on reason of attack…”
I;m not so sure of that…but that is a bungle of the state department CAREER diplomats, not the administration’s policies…this one has been politicized for our own domestic campaigning…
“…oh and our guys are getting shot by those who we trained in Iraq.”
And what has Obama’s foreign policy got to do with that? He pulled out as per the plan already in place. What should/could he have done differently?

It appears that some on the Left are now willing to “riot” if Obama loses. In saying such a thing they are basically stating that they are willing to throw democracy to the wayside in their persuit of whatever it is they want. It’s kind of like Greece isn’t it? Most blacks want Obama to win and they will vote for him no matter what. Even when faced with evidence to the contrary they are still willing to support one of the most destructive and divisive leaders this country has ever known because he is black, not because he has done anything in particular to help them as a group (other than giving them free taxpayer funded entitlement programs). The entitlement crowd (which consists of both large numbers of white and black people) want their free money to continue to come in no matter the damage it does to our country and they are ready to riot also. Yep. It is a fine state we find ourselves in now and liberal politics is the reason for it. Jay, do you support anarchy if Obama loses? I understand what you’re saying about “on the surface.” Here’s my take on the Obama non-interventionist policy in the ME, for what it’s worth. By stepping back and staying out of their internal squabbles while they held free, yes, free, elections, we now have a much clearer view of what their people think about where they want to go. Now we have a clearer picture of where to put our support, who, how many and how strong are those who share our values. There’s a great deal of hope in Libya, Tunisia can still be “courted.” Egypt may well be a lost cause. Turkey and Israel are in our corner. Afghanistan is Afghanistan. Iraq? Kurdistan has been a success story. Iran? It looks like it’s about to lose its surrogate in Syria. it has its own internal pot boiling….not the best of times to go nuclear on THEM…

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are both decent men… make your choice, shut up, and go cast your vote on Nov. 6th. There aren’t any undecided voters to convince and no one on this board is going to be swayed from their positions… that has been made abundantly clear.
Obama came in with a less-than-stellar economy and has turned it around far slower than people predicted. That doesn’t necessarily make him Satan incarnate.
Mitt Romney is not some evil rich guy that wants to give you cancer and provide tax breaks to himself. The man took no salary as the governor of Mass. or as the President of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Both of these men demonstrate integrity on a daily basis and personal attacks or questions of their caring/patriotism/etc. are simply facile arguments that betray an underlying lack of substance on the part of the attacker.

I have some friends who live in the country. They have five dogs, Aussies and Border Collies, and their next-door neighbors have Daschunds and Chihuahuas. Every morning those dogs get together at the fence line and run up and down as fast as they can, barking at the top of their lungs, over and over and over.
I guess you would deny them that pleasure, too.

I am afraid that was NOT consistently the Obama administration’s modus operandi. Indeed, it now appears that the Syrian rebels are intensely resentful of the lack of support from western nations (who might have expected more after Gaddafi was targeted). And Libya, where we intervened, is a mess (if the attack on the consulate is any indication)

Biden proves liberals wrong. Here is a former lawyer who doesn’t seem to know that guffawing, rolling your eyes and constantly interrupting you opponent (82 times in all) does NOT logically win arguments. That’s works on a school playground (with pre-logically minded children), but no where else. It especially doesn’t work when you are trying, by that behavior, to create the impression that your opponent is a liar when you yourself are misrepresenting the truth.

Yes I will agree for now it was not a “fund raiser”. Think there will be riots if Bozo wins? Think that all of those Tea Party brown shirts will take to the streets? Nope. The only segment that promotes violence as part of their platform are liberals. If they don’t get their way then they think that it is perfectly alright to demonstrate in a violent manner to make their point. Let a Tea Party contingent do that and the media world implodes. Actually, many in the “media” thought it was a draw.
Actually, when even powerline calls it for Biden “draw” doesn’t even enter into it.
Frankly, I expected much more from Ryan, and he let us down. A disengaged viewer would have seen Joe Biden as the much more forceful, much more knowledgeable candidate. Worse, Biden’s victory gives the Democratic media exactly what they were looking for: an opportunity to declare the beginning of the Obama comeback. This was a needless defeat; I could easily come up with more than 100 individuals who do not hold public office but would have done a better job than Ryan did tonight. It was a big disappointment. Let’s just hope that Biden overplayed his hand and TV viewers thought he was a weirdo. And let’s hope that no one votes based on the VP candidate. Advantage, Democrats.
FURTHER UPDATE: One more thing–for what it is worth, Sarah Palin did a much better job against Joe Biden in 2008 than Paul Ryan did tonight. Bizarre, but true.
And, as the SNL skit joked, the debate was inconsequential anyway (except for, perhaps, the bad taste Biden’s childishness left in people’s mouth).

Jay Bookman writes: “We have 500,000 plus more private sector jobs today than when Obama took office.”
———————————————————————————————————————————————
Considering the population of the country has grown by about 10 million or so since Obama took office, nominal private sector job growth of 500,000 is really a relative decrease in private sector jobs of several million. Let’s remember that we’re about 8,000,000 fewer employed than what Obama Administration predicted would be the case at this moment in time when they were pushing their stimulus. That 8 million additional jobs projection incorporated both population growth as well as a recovery of the jobs lost during the recession. As well, median family income has decreased by about $4,000 since Obama took office. It’s been an abysmal record. But to many Obama apologists on the left, the fact that the recovery has been so abysmal is evidence of just how rough Obama had it. When reality it that the abysmal strength of the recovery is evidence of nothing more than how ineffective Obama’s policies have been in facilitating recovery.

I have a neighbor who’s been out of work for some time, and he’s very discouraged. To cheer him up, this is what I told him:
“The new data Monday came as the Commerce Department revised August’s increase in retail sales to 1.2% from the earlier estimate of 0.9%. That meant the rise in August was the largest monthly gain since October 2010.”
I couldn’t believe the size of the smile that appeared on his face. He actually started doing cartwheels across his front lawn! The joy he showed at this economic news was orgasmic.

Bloomberg – wholly-owned subsidiary of the DNC.
Reuters – pure, unadulterated Democrat shill 24/7
Census Bureau – controlled by supreme leader, numbers will be revised downward within a week or two
Housing – are you kidding me? I know numerous former house builders – none of them have gotten back in this business. Most find employment helping banks deal with their blown-up portfolios (who by the way will not loan for new construction without tremendous, IRR-killing collateral).
GM – what percent of these sales went to government fleets? Guarantee you its huge. I read somewhere the State Dept. is outfitting everybody with Volts (only people that will buy one).
Going to have to work alot harder than this over the next few weeks, Jay.

Rush had a rather insightful commentary on Hillary the other day, certainly not all of it bad. At the time, he urged her to come forth and help shoulder the blame for events in Libya. He was of the opinion that she hooked her star onto Bill by going to Arkansas, of all places, to pursue his political career. Once she was there, and working for a bunch of hicks at the Rose Law Firm, it became painfully obvious to her that she had made a very big mistake, especially with all of Bills extra curricular activities on the side. By then, she had Chelsea which no doubt added to the dilemma of whether to stay or go. But like any other political figure with ambitions, she decided to stick around despite the downside. I kind of wonder if she would have ever achieved the accomplishments in her career alone and without Bill. Guess we’ll never know.

http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/10/15/1015701/tea-party-group-launches-racist-obamaphone-ad/
Late last month, conservative media lit up with a video of an African-American woman excitedly praising President Barack Obama because he supposedly gave racial minorities in Cleveland free telephones. The video received prominent placement on the pro-Romney Drudge Report and spawned a popular #Obamaphone hashtag on Twitter. Although there is indeed a federal program which provides low-income people with free or reduced-cost cell phones, it began in 2008 under President George W. Bush. The idea of providing subsidized phone service to low-income individuals originated with a program started under President Ronald Reagan.
Now, the “Obamaphone” woman is the star of an ad sponsored by the Tea Party Victory Fund suggesting President Obama’s policies have “enslaved Americans“:
It’s difficult to view this ad as anything other that an appeal to the visceral reaction its very enthusiastic star is likely to inspire in a certain kind of voter. The ad will run in three Ohio counties — Lucas, Summit, and Mahoning — all of which are predominantly white.
Calling these Teapers “pond scum” is an insult to scum.

I lean toward the latter, simply because I’ve heard entirely too many GOP partisans inform me that they think Hillary is fabulous, they think she’s strong and intelligent, yadda yadda yadda.
And I know that these same people would be so easily swayed by a couple of Drudgey/Limbaughian swipes that would be part and parcel of any general election campaign; I also know, as I’ve pointed out many times, that casual sexism is MUCH more socially acceptable in 21st century America than casual racism, and that a Hillary Clinton aspiring to the nation’s highest office would’ve had to withstand a level of brutal misogyny that would make the nastiest jokes leveled against Sarah Palin seem tame.
So in short, no, I don’t buy it.
However, I will allow this much. I suspect those left-leaners who constantly weigh in about what a great candidate a Jon Huntsman would’ve made go way too far when they claim “I would seriously consider voting for him!” Come on. Huntsman, like any prominant GOPer, has to carry idiotic anti-choice and anti-tax baggage around to get *anywhere*–Jon would have to completely bury his comments about how (for example) the ‘09 Recovery Act stimulus probably wasn’t big enough to get the job done.
Let’s be honest–at best, a Candidate Huntsman would be regarded as potentially not horrible, by us on the left.

And a draw favors the challenger
not really. Romney, by any honest reckoning of the current polling, still has significant ground to make up to win this election, and if there’s a draw, it means the status quo continues another week, which sucks for him.
Obama has a tough night ahead; yes, he’s done townhalls recently, and faced some tough questions, but they’re still events that his team manages. He can’t give some questioner the stinkeye and they’re disappeared.
That said, all he really has to do, is to be a lot less sucky than he was last week, and frankly that I don’t think that should be all that hard for him to do.
I think, by the way, that Kyle was on to something with his post-VP debate analysis:
This was a trial run for the second presidential debate, especially in light of President Obama’s comment this week that he was “too polite” the first time around. I don’t think Obama will follow Biden’s lead exactly — in fact, I assume part of the strategy was for Biden to be so over the top with his laughs, smirks and interruptions that Obama can be fairly rude toward Mitt Romney next week but look gentlemanly by comparison.
In fact, I *hope* Kyle’s got that right, because that would be my encouragement–be somewhat nasty, Mr. President, but don’t play this quite like you play basketball.

In any debate with Romney, only one of him can win. All the others will lose.

“…You don’t want that black man in your whitehouse.”–AU Liberal in ATL
Well, it seems the desperation from the Left is reaching new levels.
And who said the Debates would have minimal effect on the election.
Even the gullible Liberals didn’t like what they say during the first Debate.
Obama must be in bigger trouble than we think.

stands, 7:42,
I never thought that I would be stepping up to defend Hillary. However, she has the balls to accept responsibility for this Libya fiasco while her boss tosses her under the bus to protect his election chances. She did, in at least two speeches prior to admitting fault, profess that some ridiculous video was the cause of this cluster, thinking that she, Rice, Carney and others could spin this in their own way. Even her own State Dept insiders wouldn’t fall on their sword for her or for Bozo. However, for whatever reason, she has stepped up and taken the blame. Her political future is certainly in doubt because of this and well should be. She and her security staff screwed up…. big time. So, spin this any way you please. The end result will no doubt not change.

5 unmet promises of President Obama…
What USMC fails to mention is that he wouldn’t support Obama on fullfilling *any* of those promises mentioned in the Politico piece.
anyway, spendy SHEETZ, headin’ upstairs for a bit.

oh, one other thing:
However, she has the balls to accept responsibility for this Libya fiasco
She’s doing the job she’s supposed to do as a loyal team member. And by the way, merely using the term “balls”, as you and others *constantly* do in place of the word “courage”–mostly to belittle our President, I think, rather than to praise his Secretary of State–indicates that you’re stuck in a rather stupid last-century gender paradigm that seems pretty out of touch.
and what happened in Libya? it’s only a “fiasco” because our corporate media have determined that it needs to be called that. Under an Godly War Preznit like Bush, they’d be telling us how we have to pull together in a time of need.
The corporate media can’t allow Obama to get too uppity. Bad for their bottom line.

Increase in spending first year in office: Bush 33%; Obama 27%
Increase Bush second term: 20%
Estimated increase in Obama’s second term: 7%
What I don’t know if how much of this reduction is a result of decreased war spending in Iraq and Afghanistan..

Stevie Ray – Correct me if I am wrong, I did not know Bush was in the race. I sure hear you libs calling his name every day. I will bet you that if Romney wins(?), he will not blame Obama for the past four years, like you libs choose to do daily!

If Obama and Romney were to swap skin color at lunch, tomorrow’s media coverage of the debate would be about Cool Hand Luke and Don King.
