Joe Biden, one helluva happy warrior

I’m sorry I missed this yesterday, but as Ed Kilgore points out, it’s one of those rare bits of political prediction that reads even better after the event. You might say it’s like day-old jambalaya in that regard.

From Charles P. Pierce at Esquire, anticipating Joe Biden’s debate performance:

ap-vice-presidential-debate-4_3_rx512_c680x510

“Joe Biden is not riven with self-doubt. Joe Biden is not exhausted by the hurly-burly of politics. Joe Biden is not burdened by the weight of events and laid low by the constant battle against know-nothing obstructionism. Joe Biden is not going to take the stage tonight and find himself wishing he were anywhere else. I mean, god be good to him, as my gran’ used to say, but Joe Biden actually likes all these silly performance pieces in which we insist he be engaged in order to stay vice-president. He revels in them. He would do ten of them a day, if he could. When I consider Joe Biden, and I look at the enthusiasm with which he throws himself into the various cataracts and torrents of hogwash that constitute our politics these days, I find myself looking at him the way I look at people who sky-dive or drive in demolition derbies. I have no idea why they do what they do, and I have absolutely no intention of doing it myself, ever, but, goddamn, do those people look like they’re having fun.

So tonight, when Biden takes the stage to debate Paul Ryan, the zombie-eyed granny-starver from the state of Wisconsin, it is very unlikely that the debate will hinge on whether either man really wants to be there. Biden eats these kinds of things on toast, and Ryan is as ambitious as Satan.”

All I can say is … Yup.

One further point, though. A lot of Democrats were heartened by Biden’s performance last night and eager to see President Obama equally engaged and passionate in the second presidential debate, coming next week.

Well, be careful what you wish for.

Last night, Joe Biden was just being Joe Biden. He pulled it off because like him or hate him, that’s who he truly is. On the other hand, Obama trying to pull a Joe Biden would be disastrous. A performance like that just isn’t in Obama’s nature, and he has to find his own way of reasserting himself. The second debate will be almost as important to Obama as the first debate was to Romney.

I find it laughable that Ryan tap danced again around the direct question of what loopholes would be closed to offset the 5 trillion in across the board tax rate cuts. After the first dance he was asked a second time and still danced, then finally had to be asked if there were any that were off the table as far as being taken away and he still could not bring himself to answer the question. He and Mitt Romney know the details and they also know if they come clean it is game over.

If Obama did a “Joe Biden” he’d be eagerly labeled by the cons as an “Angry Black Man”. Anytime a black person disagrees with the status quo, they must do so in a very sedate manner so as not to scare the weak kneed who, deep down, are frightened to death of anyone, (male, female, black or white), who has the balls to stand up and say something.

Biden was labeled as “impolite” by a couple of bloggers today. Obama will be labeled as “arrogant” and “uppity”. He can’t do a Joe Biden; he has to be seen as a mild mannered Black Man at all times.

When he gets into that phone booth, then he can take off his glasses, change his costume, and slap that “S” on his chest.

What you missed was an arrogant, ignorant jerk known as your vice-president childishly attacking a man of integrity, concern, intelligence and creativity known as the honorable Rep. Paul D. Ryan. Rep. Ryan wishes to save the once-free nation from fiscal irresponsibility and a end a general disregard for the values that made this once-free nation great.

I was appalled and disgusted with how that old jerk laughed at the problems that plague us. Iran and worldwide jihadists wish to kill us and push Israel into the sea. If you oppose a *stimulus* package that the democrats eventually pass, your constituents will bear the burden of additional taxes to repay the debt, so of course you will request some of the money for your district. Think Joey Giggles doesn’t know that?
The *debate* confirms what Bob Woodward’s book revealed. The Obama administration is responsible for the failure to pass any meaningful legislation to solve any of the fiscal cliff, entitlement reform, tax reform problems. Biden refused to listen to any of Ryan’s responses and tried to distract the audience in an effort to prevent people from even hearing Ryan’s side. The consequences of this administration’s antics will be disastrous not only for my family–yours just might have a longer wait.

Unfortunately, he was pushed aside and now we have a President that has failed because of his lack of experience and ability! It is sad to read the comments on here by democrats desperate for anything positive to reverse the momentum the republicans have going as they and the American people look for new hope and change to move forward and strengthen our country by making a change in the presidency! If someone who acts like Biden did last night has the qualities you desire in a VP, congrats. Me, I can’t wait for January. Thanks Biden. Your petulant, rude behavior last night turned a lot of indies off, and definitely was not an example of how Obama promised 4 years ago to build coalitions and work across parties. There was nothing he said that would really give any confidence to the middle class that they would be a priority. We already know that the repubs are the protectors of the upper class, now they want to move to the middle in the last weeks? I don’t think so…

As unhappy as I was with President Obama’s performance in his debate, I was ecstatic with Biden’s performance last night. He was knowledgeable, assertive and stated the administration’s positions quite clearly. All I remember from Ryan (well, other than the lies) was reference to the “5-point plan” (with no specifics) and how comfortable he was asserting his religious views on the entire US population — the exact issue American’s were afraid of with JFK.

RIghty — “Joe did you cheer when old Joe smiled and smirked at people being unemployed in this country and at the deaths of our citizens in Libya?”

I cheered because Ryan and Romney won’t do anything about it and are just using those things to get elected. Romney’s plan won’t create jobs (but it will make the already-rich even richer) and will likely start an unnecessary war with Iran.

I’m glad Joe laughed at Ryan then. Ryan’s an ignoramus and a liar.

“Did you cheer at Joe’s lies about Obamacare confiscating 700 billion dollars from medicare?”

I cheered because Joe exposed Ryan for the liar he is — Obama’s plan SAVES $700B and plows it right back into more medical care for Americans, while Ryan’s plan just cuts the $700B and gives it away to rich people in the form of tax cuts.

It’s true. Read up on it.

If it weren’t so easy and so obvious to point out the myths, then maybe noone would. probably my favorite bit of the debate started with Ryan’s Evil Stimulus bit:

They passed a stimulus, the idea that we could borrow $831 billion, spend it on all these special interest groups and that it would work out just fine, that unemployment would never get to 8 percent. It went up above 8 percent for 43 months. They said that right now, if we just pass this stimulus, the economy would grow at 4 percent. It’s growing at 1.3 (percent).

Now, there are all kinds of wonky ways I would’ve gone after that. I could’ve chipped away at the edges, saying that the estimates he’s talking about were from January 2009, before the worst of the economic reports were in. I could’ve gone another way and said “so your approach would be to let most of our state economies collapse in a heap, say ’sorry lads, you’re on your own, can’t help you!’ is that your idea of leadership?”

But what does Biden do?

I love my friend here. I — I’m not allowed to show letters, but go on our website: He sent me two letters saying, by the way, can you send me some stimulus money for companies here in the state of Wisconsin? We sent millions of dollars. You know why he said he needed –

MS. RADDATZ: You did ask for stimulus money, correct?

VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN: Sure he did. By the way — (inaudible) –

REP. RYAN: On two occasions, we — we — we advocated for constituents who were applying for grants.

VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN: (Chuckles.)

REP. RYAN: That’s what we do. We do that for all constituents who are — (inaudible) — for grants.

VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN: I love that. I love that. This is such a bad program, and he writes me a letter saying — writes the Department of Energy a letter saying, the reason we need this stimulus — it will create growth and jobs.

Good stuff.

Ryan has the cold dead eyes of a person who would enjoy putting nursing home patients in the streets if he gets his 1/3 reduction in Medicaid! In addition, most doctors who take Medicaid patients now (usually the people who are severely ill or disabled), would stop taking them if they got even less for their care than they are already getting. Do you think the doctors are going to treat all those people for free? What about cancer patients? Radiation therapy alone (for just one cancer)
can run over $20,000! Where are these poor sick people going to get the money from?
ERs do not provide radiation therapy and chemo!!!!! If Paul Ryan gets cancer, do you really think he is going to have any worries about where and how to obtain and pay for treatment? I despise people who have all the money and comfort they could ever need, yet can’t wait to crush the ill, disabled, and elderly in our society! This is pure evil. All you people asking about the Romney Ryan plan, why weren’t you so willing to see Obama’s healthcare plan last election. What was his plan? I believe it was to have an open debate in front of everybody on CSPAN blah blah blah and create a healthcare reform bill that cost less than a trillion dollars. What did we get? A closed door meeting that rammed through legislation that most people in the country do not want. The bill wasn’t even close to $1 trillion and the number continues to grow by the day. Oh but, we had to pass to see all of the good things in it. Give me a break. What good does it do to give details of a plan when it is only as good as the legislation that will work with you to pass it? That is the problem with you libs. scott: get the rest of the facts. The House refused to pass a bill to increase embassy security, instead insisting on hundreds of millions in cuts. Now, I’m no math whiz, but if you CUT funds, you can’t really INCREASE security, not unless you have a few mall cops out of work with a bad attitude and a desire to carry a real gun.

Also, the Benghazi compound was inadvertently revealed to be a CIA post. So the CIA evidently shared responsibility for security there. Where were they and why didnt’ the explosion of intel supposedly created by all the money poured in post-911 not give them a clue that a group was organizing an attack? There are a lot of failures here, and a lot of folks who need to answer for it whose responsibility it is to know and inform the WH.

long as I’m sharing, here’s my LEAST favorite Biden moment, although I’m sure it played well:

MS. RADDATZ: Vice President Biden, let me ask you, if it could help solve the problem, why not very slowly raise the Medicare eligibility age by two years, as Congressman Ryan suggests?

VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN: Look, I was there when we did that with Social Security, in 1983. I was one of eight people sitting in the room that included Tip O’Neill negotiating with President Reagan. We all got together, and everybody said, as long as everybody’s in the deal, everybody’s in the deal, and everybody is making some sacrifice, we can find a way. We made the system solvent to 2033.

We will not, though, be part of any voucher plan eliminating — the voucher says, Mom, when you’re — when you’re 65, go out there, shop for the best insurance you can get; you’re out of Medicare. You can buy back in, if you want, with this voucher, which will not keep pace — will not keep pace with health care costs, because if it did keep pace with health care costs, there would be no savings. That’s why they go the voucher — they — we will be no part of a voucher program or the privatization of Social Security.

And that’s an absolutely pussified response, Mister Vice President. The correct answer is, “we are NOT going to raise the eligibility age, that’s a f-cking stupid thing to even ask. Do you have any idea how expensive it would be for the private market to take on those older Americans? What are you, nuts? Do you know anyone outside of the Village who has to pay for this stuff on their own?

Keep up the good fight. I just do not believe these guys. Obama appointed Stevens as ambassador. A success in Libya would be a focal point of his reelection campaign. You don’t think he had any communication with him? Seriously? It has been noted that Stevens was concerned about the security. He wrote it in his own words. I can picture how this interaction must have gone.
Obama: So Chris, how are things going over there. You know this is an important issue for my foreign policy. Let’s make it quick though. I have 3 other guys waiting for me on the course.
Stevens: Well…..there is a little bit of concern here. I know we have done a decent job fortifying it, but I am a little bit concerned about whether we have enough people to keep it secure. Surely, it was mentioned in the national security briefing.
Obama: National Security…..what? Oh that thing. Man….I haven’t been to one of those in months. I think I stopped going to those things about the same time I stopped going to that boring jobs council. Okay….so everything sounds good. Thanks for letting me know that Libya is okay.
Stevens: Uh……not exactly what I said

Yes regarding Bob Woodwards book Price of Politics…highly unlikely that many, if any liberals on this forum read that book as they were tipped off that it was critical of the poor, if non-existent leadership skills of President Spineless.. The discussion about BO turning away GOP before inauguration when approached with a proposal that cut bottom two tax rates and eliminated taxes on unemployment benefits his response was “we won, you lost get over it…as president I think i trump you..” This was the first stone casted in the stalemate.

Joe Biden certainly provided some entertainment last night. Agree with Jay that he was just being Joe but after awhile the theatrics detracted somewhat.

Biden’s most important comment all evening imho was reiterating the commitment to exit Afghanistan and turn that debacle over to the Afghans in 2014. I heard Ryan say that the U.S. should never go to war unless it’s in our national interest, but ‘national interest’ covers a lot of territory. Hopefully he doesn’t believe that we should continue to be the World Policeman.

And frankly, what made it good, rather than painful, was that Ryan wasn’t helpless, he was a decent adversary and put up a good fight. It wasn’t a blowout by any means. But I was pleased with what I saw, which was vintage Biden, the guy I saw in the 2007-2008 primary debates, not the subdued, better-not-come-off-like-a-sexist-jerk guy who went up against Sarah Palin.

Ryan’s answer to the last question about what he would tell a serviceman about the tone of the campaign rhetoric was astonishing. The first sentence was something about “Thank you for your service.” He never mentioned the serviceman again. He just kept spewing the anti-Obama vitriol that he has been spewing for months. I suppose that what we can infer from Ryan’s answer is that he is darned proud of the tone of the campaign, and to expect the same if his ticket is elected.

One viewers take I find humorous..

Biden’s doddering old uncle routine — you could almost smell Aqua Velva through the television screen — was no doubt meant to rattle the less experienced debater, but it became a sideshow in itself. Maybe that was done on purpose, too.

Rep. Paul Ryan is a bright guy, but I can’t remember a word he said because of that split screen. Ryan could have explained how to divide the atom, but I, and millions of other Americans, couldn’t stop watching Biden’s “SNL” act. I submit that you will be wildly disappointed…

I watched part of the end last night before bed, and I was actually quite surprised more by the moderator than anything else. Instead of letting Ryan skate by on their tax/budget issue, she kept digging at him to actually answer the question and show some leadership. I guess you can’t bust somebody’s chops about not being a leader when your grand tax plan requires you to abdicate to Congress, huh?

That was hilarious, liberal. Joe Biden knew what he was talking about and he demonstrated it. Paul Ryan has spent the last 20 years of his life in Washington and he couldn’t offer anything but political talking points. I am sure that there is a reason for that. His record as a Congressman is so extremely right wing that he wouldn’t dare talk about it during a national debate.

Oh that speech wasn’t random, that’s for sure. It was made in the heat of campaign season to a very specific group of supporters. Knowing Mitt, he was probably just saying what he knew they wanted to hear. But you have to admit he did it very convincingly. This was an audience of like-minded folks Romney is used to being around. And it was, as he admitted, just plain wrong. But he said it, and it will keep on churning. Even Ryan gave a number of 30% in one of his speeches. If you put it out there as a politician, you have to figure somebody, somewhere has a camera, or at least a notepad and you WILL have to answer for it sooner or later.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued the following statement, October 12. Full text follows:

Last night, the following statement was made during the Vice Presidential debate regarding the decision of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to force virtually all employers to include sterilization and contraception, including drugs that may cause abortion, in the health insurance coverage they provide their employees:

“With regard to the assault on the Catholic Church, let me make it absolutely clear. No religious institution—Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital—none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact. That is a fact.”

This is not a fact. The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain “religious employers.” That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to “Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital,” or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served.

HHS has proposed an additional “accommodation” for religious organizations like these, which HHS itself describes as “non-exempt.” That proposal does not even potentially relieve these organizations from the obligation “to pay for contraception” and “to be a vehicle to get contraception.” They will have to serve as a vehicle, because they will still be forced to provide their employees with health coverage, and that coverage will still have to include sterilization, contraception, and abortifacients. They will have to pay for these things, because the premiums that the organizations (and their employees) are required to pay will still be applied, along with other funds, to cover the cost of these drugs and surgeries.

USCCB continues to urge HHS, in the strongest possible terms, actually to eliminate the various infringements on religious freedom imposed by the mandate.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued the following statement, October 12. Full text follows:

The USCCB should advocate for single payer healthcare then. That way, they don’t have to provide anything. If they choose to step out into the secular world and operate as others do, then they fall under the laws governing the secular world.

I don’t know why y’all b*tch and complain about things and then don’t offer a viable solution. Damn unhappy folks.

http://old.nationalreview.com/daily/nr080999.html

In the week before [Karla Faye Tucker's] execution, Bush says, Bianca Jagger and a number of other protesters came to Austin to demand clemency for Tucker. “Did you meet with any of them?” I ask.

Bush whips around and stares at me. “No, I didn’t meet with any of them,” he snaps, as though I’ve just asked the dumbest, most offensive question ever posed. “I didn’t meet with Larry King either when he came down for it. I watched his interview with [Tucker], though. He asked her real difficult questions, like ‘What would you say to Governor Bush?’ ”

“What was her answer?” I wonder.

“Please,” Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, “don’t kill me.”

I voted Democratic in 2008 and may do so again, but there is no way anyone with a thinking mind can say Biden’s behavior was anywhere near respectable. He reminded me of that guy at the company Christmas party who has way too much to drink and runs his mouth constantly while wearing a lampshade on his head. The term “buffoon” comes to mind. vince, here’s some background.

Biden laughed at Ryan constantly, and it pissed a lot of people off. [Fornicate] them. It was the laugh of an old man who has heard enough bull[poop] to last ten lifetimes. Biden used to argue with Jesse Helms, one of the most craven, vile [legitimates] to ever set foot in DC. He went toe-to-toe with Bob Dole. He was locked in a death match with Orrin Hatch for years. You think that Ryan was gonna throw anything at him that he hasn’t heard before? It was the laugh of someone who sees through the con and wants everyone to know that he gets the joke. Biden laughed because he wanted to degrade the lies and half-answers that Ryan gave, because he wanted to turn Ryan into a laughingstock.

It seems we’ll elect the best debator in the upcomming election. Therefore, I would suggest we begain, after the election, a national debating contest. Anyone qualified to become president is elligible. These debates will be held in every state and, using the process of elemination, we’ll eventually be down to two people. These two will then engage in 4 nationally televised debates. The media will decide the winner and he/she will be our next president.

It’s the new dumbed down American way.

Biden wasn’t laughing at serious subjects. He was laughing at the ridiculous talking points that Ryan was reduced to repeating. Biden and Ryan have been living and working together in the same town for 20 years. It’s not like they just met. Biden was prepared for a serious debate on the issues. The only time that Ryan talked about his record in congress was when he was forced to defend his plea for stimulus money. To make the charge that Biden was laughing at serious subjects is like making the charge that democrats think that they can eliminate the budget deficit by raising taxes on the rich.

The truth is that Biden was laughing at a not so serious subject, Paul Ryan. The truth is that democrats think that raising taxes on the rich is a starting point for negotiating a bipartisan plan for reducing the budget deficit.

Response top Bill Orvis White: Bill, what you fail to realize is the reason why Joe was laughing. It was the alternative to getting angry from sitting there watching and listening to all the lies that kept flowing from Ryan. He followed the same footsteps as Romney in the first debate. Unlike the president, VP Biden decided to halt Ryan in his tracks and not let him jump to another lie before he provided truth to the previous one. If there was a truth meter at the table it would have been pegging the needle to the false end every time Ryan open his mouth. Joe is serious about the issues that confront our country and get your numbers straight, what debate were you listening to? The amount that was saved through efficiencies gained by working with the providers and actually improved the service to the elderly was $716 billion, not trillion.
President Obama did get to do some of the things he promised. He got healthcare passed, he got Bin Laden, decimated most of the leadership of Al Qaeda, passed the Lilly Ledbetter fair pay act, killed don’t ask don’t tell in the military, pulled the country up from a sinking ship into a more promising future, shifted away from losing 800 thousand jobs a month to 42 months of positive job growth, ended the war in Iraq, ending the war in Afghanistan, appointed two exemplary women to the supreme court, extended many olive branches out to the Republican party only to get back a pledge they made to Rehnquist to just say no to any and everything he tried to do. In spite of this pack against him by the GOP, something that has been unprecedented in modern times, he still got things done. I applaud his effort and cannot wait to get my vote in so I can do everything in my power to ensure he gets elected to another term. Eat your heart out: OBAMA WINS AGAIN!!!

Mitt Romney is going to be our next President. Since the debate, his poll numbers have skyrocketed both nationally and in every key swing state. Colorado Romney is leading by 4%, North Carolina by 9%, Virginia by 4%, Florida by 3%, Ohio by 1%, and Missouri by 6%. Those are the swing states, but Romney is also close to leading in several states that no one thought he would have a chance in. Nevada is tied, Wisconsin Obama is only ahead 2%, Michigan 3%, Pennsylvania by 2%, and New Hampshire is tied. Some of those States have not been won by a Republican since Ronald Reagan. The Obama campaign spent $300 Million on negative Ads trying to paint Romney as something that hes not, and after the American people had a chance to see Romney in person, those Ads became ineffective. Romney started Bain Capital from his own hard work and started or turned around companies such as Staples, Sports Authority, Burlington Coat Factory, AMC Entertainment, Toys R Us, Warner Music, Dominos Pizza, and hundreds of others. His investors saw an average annual rate of return of 113%. The 2002 Winter Olympics were $379 Million in debt when he took over and he turned the games around and ended up erasing all of the debt and making $100 Million profit. As Governor of Massachusetts unemployment was 6.3% when he took office and 4.6% when he left. Mitt Romney is the world’s most successful turnaround artist and he will do the exact same thing to the American economy.

Folks if we all don’t wise up and stop putting up with the B.S. from ALL politicans our country is doomed.

Ole Joe is the closest thing we got to Harry Truman. If Harry was listening to all that crap from Ryan , he would have laughed and called him a lyin SOB cameras or no cameras.

Thousands of civilians and thousands of military die under Bush due to Al- Quaida and the administrations gross incompetence.. Four Americans unfortunately die under Obama from a sneak attack by an Al Quaida wannabee group when our Ambassador wanders from the embassy in Tripoli to a private residence in Benghazi and the cons are catawauling like Obama cannot be trusted to deal with terrorists, What a bunch of malarkey, horse BS and a few other names.

Romey was photographer and recorded telling what he really thinks about most Americans, and certainly about most disabled, sick, hard-working poor, elderly, and non-rich retired people. Your true colors come out when you speak to those you think are your real peers–other super rich people!
Romney and his ilk don’t live in the everyday world. They don’t do their own grocery shopping, clean their own houses, and don’t usually take care of their own children alone. The children almost always have nannies (read poorly paid domestic employees, sometimes “illegals”) or are sent away to select and very expensive boarding schools. As a well-educated, but disabled person on a very small fixed income, I’d love to see Romney, but especially Ryan, live on my monthly income for even one day, or perhaps even two hours!! They’d be crying for mercy!

This Election Is not child’s play, but we have two wanna be’s who think this country is a joke. Romney ran to another country with his company’s when things got tough, he gave the jobs to other poor country’s and left us to starve but now he’s back talking about he want to be our president. If I vote for a dead head I’ll starve for real.
