Joe Biden, one helluva happy warrior

I’m sorry I missed this yesterday, but as Ed Kilgore points out, it’s one of those rare bits of political prediction that reads even better after the event. You might say it’s like day-old jambalaya in that regard.

From Charles P. Pierce at Esquire, anticipating Joe Biden’s debate performance:

ap-vice-presidential-debate-4_3_rx512_c680x510

“Joe Biden is not riven with self-doubt. Joe Biden is not exhausted by the hurly-burly of politics. Joe Biden is not burdened by the weight of events and laid low by the constant battle against know-nothing obstructionism. Joe Biden is not going to take the stage tonight and find himself wishing he were anywhere else. I mean, god be good to him, as my gran’ used to say, but Joe Biden actually likes all these silly performance pieces in which we insist he be engaged in order to stay vice-president. He revels in them. He would do ten of them a day, if he could. When I consider Joe Biden, and I look at the enthusiasm with which he throws himself into the various cataracts and torrents of hogwash that constitute our politics these days, I find myself looking at him the way I look at people who sky-dive or drive in demolition derbies. I have no idea why they do what they do, and I have absolutely no intention of doing it myself, ever, but, goddamn, do those people look like they’re having fun.

So tonight, when Biden takes the stage to debate Paul Ryan, the zombie-eyed granny-starver from the state of Wisconsin, it is very unlikely that the debate will hinge on whether either man really wants to be there. Biden eats these kinds of things on toast, and Ryan is as ambitious as Satan.”

All I can say is … Yup.

One further point, though. A lot of Democrats were heartened by Biden’s performance last night and eager to see President Obama equally engaged and passionate in the second presidential debate, coming next week.

Well, be careful what you wish for.

Last night, Joe Biden was just being Joe Biden. He pulled it off because like him or hate him, that’s who he truly is. On the other hand, Obama trying to pull a Joe Biden would be disastrous. A performance like that just isn’t in Obama’s nature, and he has to find his own way of reasserting himself. The second debate will be almost as important to Obama as the first debate was to Romney.

Not me. I cheered as Six-Gun Joe paddled that youngster’s behind and sent him running home crying to Mama.

Joe did you cheer when old Joe smiled and smirked at people being unemployed in this country and at the deaths of our citizens in Libya? Did you cheer at Joe’s lies about Obamacare confiscating 700 billion dollars from medicare? Boy that ole Joe is a fun guy. I hope you are sitting down because the olls almost without exsception said ole Joe got his butt whipped by the youngster.

The Bidens and the Ryans met after the debate and had a good time.

I did get a chuckle when I saw Ryan’s kid slumped in one of the chairs, looking like that might be a good place to get some shut-eye. The campaigning has to get old after awhile for the family, I imagine.

Mick, Ryan doesn’t have to. Obama is still reeling from last week. And to honest, no, the right is not that fired up about Romney , for a host of reasons I won’t go into, But Obama is being graded by the American public the last few weeks…like ALL Presidents have been…..And the stats ain’t there for him. Being black, cool, Left. Likeable, hip is coming in second at the end of the game. As in baseball, it’s the 8th inning, two outs, man on 2nd and 3rd, 2 to 1 ball game…..and the manager just sent Obama to the showers and called in Romney. Just watch.

Unreal how many people just disregard everything Republicans are saying as myth, as a means to deter from the fact that they are DOMINATING these debates. Ignorantly ignoring the myths of the democrats, to only recognize the myths of the republicans, just to somehow make it seem like the democrats are winning these debates in any sort of way. Pathetic, get a hobby, vote for a real president

Still two debates left; the public is fickle in the middle, what to do, what to do? Well, if you are working right now, you’ll usually stick with the incumbent even if it hurts. If you’re unemployed, what have you got to lose going for the new guy? Roughly 90% are currently employed, a high hurdle for romney indeed…

RIghty — “Joe did you cheer when old Joe smiled and smirked at people being unemployed in this country and at the deaths of our citizens in Libya?”

I cheered because Ryan and Romney won’t do anything about it and are just using those things to get elected. Romney’s plan won’t create jobs (but it will make the already-rich even richer) and will likely start an unnecessary war with Iran.

I’m glad Joe laughed at Ryan then. Ryan’s an ignoramus and a liar.

“Did you cheer at Joe’s lies about Obamacare confiscating 700 billion dollars from medicare?”

I cheered because Joe exposed Ryan for the liar he is — Obama’s plan SAVES $700B and plows it right back into more medical care for Americans, while Ryan’s plan just cuts the $700B and gives it away to rich people in the form of tax cuts.

It’s true. Read up on it.

If it weren’t so easy and so obvious to point out the myths, then maybe noone would. If they gave specifics and actually answered questions with more than “well all I can tell you is THEY are doing it wrong now…” then maybe we’d have something to debate other than the lies and missteps and fabrications. probably my favorite bit of the debate started with Ryan’s Evil Stimulus bit:

They passed a stimulus, the idea that we could borrow $831 billion, spend it on all these special interest groups and that it would work out just fine, that unemployment would never get to 8 percent. It went up above 8 percent for 43 months. They said that right now, if we just pass this stimulus, the economy would grow at 4 percent. It’s growing at 1.3 (percent).

Now, there are all kinds of wonky ways I would’ve gone after that. I could’ve chipped away at the edges, saying that the estimates he’s talking about were from January 2009, before the worst of the economic reports were in. I could’ve gone another way and said “so your approach would be to let most of our state economies collapse in a heap, say ’sorry lads, you’re on your own, can’t help you!’ is that your idea of leadership?”

But what does Biden do?

I love my friend here. I — I’m not allowed to show letters, but go on our website: He sent me two letters saying, by the way, can you send me some stimulus money for companies here in the state of Wisconsin? We sent millions of dollars. You know why he said he needed –

MS. RADDATZ: You did ask for stimulus money, correct?

VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN: Sure he did. By the way — (inaudible) –

REP. RYAN: On two occasions, we — we — we advocated for constituents who were applying for grants.

VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN: (Chuckles.)

REP. RYAN: That’s what we do. We do that for all constituents who are — (inaudible) — for grants.

VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN: I love that. I love that. This is such a bad program, and he writes me a letter saying — writes the Department of Energy a letter saying, the reason we need this stimulus — it will create growth and jobs.

Good stuff.

Valerie Jarret has a bigger security detail than the consulate had. We just were involved in war in Libya. The anniversary of 9-11 was coming around. It never occurred to them that perhaps maybe we should beef up security at our embassies, especially the ones in the Middle East. This lack of prep or not even asking the question is negligence. Ryan has the cold dead eyes of a person who would enjoy putting nursing home patients in the streets if he gets his 1/3 reduction in Medicaid! In addition, most doctors who take Medicaid patients now (usually the people who are severely ill or disabled), would stop taking them if they got even less for their care than they are already getting. Do you think the doctors are going to treat all those people for free? What about cancer patients? Radiation therapy alone (for just one cancer)
can run over $20,000! Where are these poor sick people going to get the money from?
ERs do not provide radiation therapy and chemo!!!!! If Paul Ryan gets cancer, do you really think he is going to have any worries about where and how to obtain and pay for treatment? I despise people who have all the money and comfort they could ever need, yet can’t wait to crush the ill, disabled, and elderly in our society! This is pure evil. The Nuns On The Bus are absolutely right about Ryan and his proposed budget.

All you people asking about the Romney Ryan plan, why weren’t you so willing to see Obama’s healthcare plan last election. What was his plan? I believe it was to have an open debate in front of everybody on CSPAN blah blah blah and create a healthcare reform bill that cost less than a trillion dollars. What did we get? A closed door meeting that rammed through legislation that most people in the country do not want. The bill wasn’t even close to $1 trillion and the number continues to grow by the day. Oh but, we had to pass to see all of the good things in it. Give me a break. What good does it do to give details of a plan when it is only as good as the legislation that will work with you to pass it? That is the problem with you libs. You believed Obama when he gave his details of his plan last election. Why weren’t you as curious about his details back then? Why are you not hammering him on all of his broken promises from the last election?

scott: get the rest of the facts. The House refused to pass a bill to increase embassy security, instead insisting on hundreds of millions in cuts. Now, I’m no math whiz, but if you CUT funds, you can’t really INCREASE security, not unless you have a few mall cops out of work with a bad attitude and a desire to carry a real gun.

Also, the Benghazi compound was inadvertently revealed to be a CIA post. So the CIA evidently shared responsibility for security there. Where were they and why didnt’ the explosion of intel supposedly created by all the money poured in post-911 not give them a clue that a group was organizing an attack? There are a lot of failures here, and a lot of folks who need to answer for it whose responsibility it is to know and inform the WH.

long as I’m sharing, here’s my LEAST favorite Biden moment, although I’m sure it played well:

MS. RADDATZ: Vice President Biden, let me ask you, if it could help solve the problem, why not very slowly raise the Medicare eligibility age by two years, as Congressman Ryan suggests?

VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN: Look, I was there when we did that with Social Security, in 1983. I was one of eight people sitting in the room that included Tip O’Neill negotiating with President Reagan. We all got together, and everybody said, as long as everybody’s in the deal, everybody’s in the deal, and everybody is making some sacrifice, we can find a way. We made the system solvent to 2033.

We will not, though, be part of any voucher plan eliminating — the voucher says, Mom, when you’re — when you’re 65, go out there, shop for the best insurance you can get; you’re out of Medicare. You can buy back in, if you want, with this voucher, which will not keep pace — will not keep pace with health care costs, because if it did keep pace with health care costs, there would be no savings. That’s why they go the voucher — they — we will be no part of a voucher program or the privatization of Social Security.

And that’s an absolutely pussified response, Mister Vice President. The correct answer is, “we are NOT going to raise the eligibility age, that’s a f-cking stupid thing to even ask. Do you have any idea how expensive it would be for the private market to take on those older Americans? What are you, nuts? Do you know anyone outside of the Village who has to pay for this stuff on their own?

“Both did a good job. Biden is an old hand at this and Ryan held his own with the more experienced debater. Both were predictable. Neither screwed up. If you’re partisan you think your candidate won. If you’re objective, Biden won by a nose. It won’t change the polls, or the outcome of the election.”

Agreed.
Biden’s performance was crucial because it restored democratic morale. Ryan did well considering his experience.

Keep up the good fight. I just do not believe these guys. Obama appointed Stevens as ambassador. A success in Libya would be a focal point of his reelection campaign. You don’t think he had any communication with him? Seriously? It has been noted that Stevens was concerned about the security. He wrote it in his own words. I can picture how this interaction must have gone.
Obama: So Chris, how are things going over there. You know this is an important issue for my foreign policy. Let’s make it quick though. I have 3 other guys waiting for me on the course.
Stevens: Well…..there is a little bit of concern here. I know we have done a decent job fortifying it, but I am a little bit concerned about whether we have enough people to keep it secure. Surely, it was mentioned in the national security briefing.
Obama: National Security…..what? Oh that thing. Man….I haven’t been to one of those in months. I think I stopped going to those things about the same time I stopped going to that boring jobs council. Okay….so everything sounds good. Thanks for letting me know that Libya is okay.
Stevens: Uh……not exactly what I said
Obama: I hear you. I have to get out to the golf course. Bye. Good luck. Make sure I look good for this year’s election.

however, Biden did redeem himself almost immediately after:

Yes regarding Bob Woodwards book Price of Politics…highly unlikely that many, if any liberals on this forum read that book as they were tipped off that it was critical of the poor, if non-existent leadership skills of President Spineless.. The discussion about BO turning away GOP before inauguration when approached with a proposal that cut bottom two tax rates and eliminated taxes on unemployment benefits his response was “we won, you lost get over it…as president I think i trump you..” This was the first stone casted in the stalemate.

Funny how Liberals including Jay are jumping for joy over a tie…I guess they were most concerned he would say another idiotic thing…his BS about Afghanistan and other emotional diatribes are complete crap..if any liberals are proud of his absurd demeanor …that speaks volumes..

Jumping for joy for a tie or simply because he got thru the 90 minutes without gaff…

What did ryan say about assessing Afghanistan to stay?

It is the same neocon words to stay in Iraq.

The neocons took over mitt’s foreign policy and they are dangerous failures.

I’m asking because I honestly don’t know. Does Obama’s timeline for 2014 in Afghanistan leave the option for American forces to still be Afghanistan after 2014 or not? Does that mean ALL American forces will be out of the country in 2014?

Joe Biden certainly provided some entertainment last night. Agree with Jay that he was just being Joe but after awhile the theatrics detracted somewhat.

Biden’s most important comment all evening imho was reiterating the commitment to exit Afghanistan and turn that debacle over to the Afghans in 2014. I heard Ryan say that the U.S. should never go to war unless it’s in our national interest, but ‘national interest’ covers a lot of territory. Hopefully he doesn’t believe that we should continue to be the World Policeman.

KIMBERGER,

I guess it doesn’t matter if Bidens answers, if correct as you suggest, aren’t based on flawed policy that also lacks the specifics you keep bringing up against GOP…I loved his “get out of Afghanistan at all peril” commentary…at the rate we are going there with the influx of the very Taliban we tossed out, and the probability that the new Afghan army is not our freinds and more allegiant to the Taliban than us…everything our guys died for will be forgotten…\

Alright liberal losers. Enjoy the rest of the day. It is just one day closer to the clown being thrown out of office. Hopefully, he doesn’t do much more damage to this country. If I was the new ambassador to Libya Laurence Pope, I certainly would be worried. We know that security in that country isn’t a priority.

Now, I wish I had watched it

I really was prepared to flip back to the Orioles-Yankees matchup (it was a great game) but I couldn’t; I said at the time to Mrs. sfd,of Biden: “He’s really having a good time. He loves this stuff, doesn’t he?”

And frankly, what made it good, rather than painful, was that Ryan wasn’t helpless, he was a decent adversary and put up a good fight. It wasn’t a blowout by any means. But I was pleased with what I saw, which was vintage Biden, the guy I saw in the 2007-2008 primary debates, not the subdued, better-not-come-off-like-a-sexist-jerk guy who went up against Sarah Palin.

And again scottie-boy: why wasn’t the CIA protecting this joint since it’s been clearly revealed to have been a base for them? Why was the ambassador in a clearly insecure area in a consulate that was cover for a CIA base? Why wasn’t he in Tripoli in the secure embassy? Lots of questions about CIA involvement, or lack thereof in securing a location that they clearly were using. It seems the whole “consulate” was just that- a title to cover up what was really going on there.

Mick, I know you’ll call me naive.. I’ve been called much worse on here…..but i read Obama’s books. I just have to take him at his word because I see it being played out the last four years. And Capitalism has many warts, but it ain’t bad. This country has a pretty high standard of living. Most really poor have Ac/heat, cable Tv, cell phones, and emergency rooms for any pain. No, not perfect….But trying to ” even the playing field” by taxing the hell out of good people who have done all the right things so someone ( not physically challenged or mental types) so someone young and healthy screams ” where’s my S___” is not a good plan.

One thing that I’ve noticed is that Romney/Ryan are saying that they would work with Congress to get everything done. But when Obama did that with healthcare or jobs or the deficit or anything else he was put down as not being a leader. Yet here they are saying they’ll do the exact same thing and somehow that is now ‘leadership’. WTF!
