Liveblog: Biden, Ryan ready to rumble

UPDATE: 9:05 On a question about the Libyan attack, Biden does well, diverting it into the larger security question. Ryan handles his part ably as well, although this “weakness.”

Whoa… the malarkey card: “Everything he said is a bunch of malarkey,” says Biden. And then backs it up. A good, strong exchange, although Ryan comes across as a bit unseasoned.

UPDATE: 9:15 Ryan takes a hard, but unrealistic, line on Iran. He sounds like he’s repeating rehearsed lines, Biden sounds like he comprehends the issue.

Biden’s forcefulness working for him very well.

I wonder if President Obama is taking notes.

9:26: “We’re going in the wrong direction,” says Ryan. I don’t think that’s going to sell. “It’s late evening in America”?

Raddatz doing well as moderator, but I think the forum is easier. Sitting there at the table gives her more control. It’s a good exchange.

9:34 Medicare and Social Security. I think Joe just hit a home run on Medicare with seniors, which is his target audience on this topic.

Although Ryan is right about Biden interrupting.

9:50 Biden carrying the argument with a combination of passion and detail.

10:00 I don’t think Ryan/Romney’s argument for sticking in Afghanistan gets them anywhere. That time is past.

Ryan failed on Afghanistan, but it’s not necessarily his fault. The vague Romney position on Afghanistan, suggesting he’d stay longer, is just hard to defend after more than a decade of U.S. blood.

10:28 Ryan has held his own; he did a good job with what he was given. But this is a Biden victory. It’s not a slam dunk; it won’t alter the race much. But Biden’s conviction carried the day.

It may and should serve as a template for his boss. An interesting endnote: I don’t recall a veep debate in which the tops of the ticket, Romney and Obama in this case, were mentioned so seldom.

————————

Among other things, it’s going to be interesting to see how successful Joe Biden is in handcuffing Paul Ryan to the ardently conservative positions that he championed before joining the ticket, and how willing Ryan will be to slough off that identity in service of the newly moderate Mitt Romney.

Not to mention Biden’s proclivity for foot-chewing.

Biden told the country last night that “they” didn’t know that extra security had been requested by our Ambassador ….guess not,,,,,He was probably home in “time out” and his boss was on his talk show tour. We know he doesn’t attend NSA meetings.

Any man, politician or otherwise, who claims to care about women and their rights, and who refuses to acknowledge that a woman should have the right to decisions effecting her own body, and therefore, her destiny, is only being paternalistic toward women and that is unacceptable, and that means that he neither understands women’s rights nor does he genuinely care about women.

Ryan lost most of the pro choice crowd, no doubt. One of the most telling points brought up was the possible selection of two Supreme Court justices, something that has not been mentioned much. The court will certainly take on a decided liberal feel if Bozo is re-elected.

[Ryan] neither understands women’s rights nor does he genuinely care about women.

…but we knew that already.

And I did enjoy how he essentially ceded the “How can a good Catholic support abortion rights” argument to Biden when he acknowledged that while he personally thinks rape victims should be forced to bear their attackers’ babies, he supports the legal right of such women to terminate.

I’m sure he didn’t *want* to do that, but he had to.

Heh heh.

For all you liberal ARSES on here. Biden is a bumbling, stumbling fool. Anyonw who thinks otherwise is also a fool. Who in his right mind would want this guy as a heartbeat away from being president. WhOOAA….what a mess we would be in. He is rude, crude, and his laughing and interrupting proved it. As we all know when someone laughs, they know they have been caught either in a lie of know they are just do not know how to answer or rebut on the subject. This debate went about as expected. Biden probably did a better job to those who only listened to the debate. The split screen, however, was not kind to Biden. If Ryan conducted himself as Biden did, I would think he came across as an immature jackass. I might not want to admit to it but I would certainly be thinking it.

We INDEPENDENTS were definitely turned off by Joe “Uncle Festor” Biden’s unbalanced and seemingly drug induced “performance. And while he might have provided a little “red meat” for the USEFUL IDIOTS in the Peanut Gallery, Joe Biden looked unfit for Office; ANGRY and Confused. What a meltdown.

Ryan on the other hand presented us, we INDEPENDENTS, with an example of SOBER and RESPONSIBLE Leadership well qualified to pull our country out of the dismal that OBAMA has put us in. :-)

Looked to me like Eddie Munster versus a soon to be retired used car salesman. I had to turn it off after an hour or so…horrific television. At least Ryan acted more “presidential” that the childish smiling (how long do you suppose he soaks those pearly whites every night?) demeanor of Biden. Both had softballs tossed there way and left them alone..Biden suggesting we leave Afghanistan before job is done is idiotic…specially considering the country is already being taken over by Taliban again…maybe we should let them have it. Ryan looked like an actuary…not good on that stage..

(Hard to argue that one, actually.)

My best guess: perhaps Mr. Biden can be credited with what in baseball statistics would be termed a “hold”: something a bit shy of either a win or a save and which will probably seem perfunctory with the passage of time, but which might have done his team a bit of good.

This debate was about leadership. Who would you want to lead the USA if something happen to the President? Vice President Biden clearly showed he had more experience in politics and showed better judgement. As I watched this debate I focused my attention on Mr. Ryan. What is he? He is a young man (40’s) , who has no friends who are different from him (minorities, etc.), and has extreme points of views (tea party, etc.). Mr. Ryan showed he lacked communication skills (listening, talking, writing, body language, etc.) required for leadship. Mr. Ryan is too young to think and act like a racist bigot. If Mr. Ryan was your child or mine’s he would be labeled as “spoiled” to death and will do anything to prove his points of views regardless of the consequences of his actions. He is not fit for leadership.

I think the GOP found a way to get rid of all the right wing extremist who helped hold the American People hostage over the past 4 years when Mr. Romney choose Mr. Ryan as his running mate. The GOP can know create a winning strategy to keep as many seats as they can in both the House and Senate as well as recruit moderate GOP candidates and try to re-capture the White House in 2016. Hopefully the GOP can restore civility to our political process. We are one nation not divided by race and income status.

Ryan did not dispute the 5 trillion dollar cut and the huge increase in defense spending the way Romney did.WhenRyan was repeatedly asked to name the tax deductions that would offset that decrease in revenue Ryan just came up with the usual nonsense about “trust me” even if the math does not work. I do not remember Sara Palin talking herself into a corner that bad on substantive issues and plans of her team.
Sorry about Joe’s mannerism but when you are dealing with bold face liars and hypocrites it is exasperrating.Loved the look on Ryan’s face when he was confronted on letters he wrote for the stimulus money.
Yeah lyin Ryan is full of a bunch of stuff but sure is smooth and slick when spewing it out.If you are one of the sheep I’m sure you loved his demeanor even if there was no substance.

“when did people become such wooses and bullying became the new buzz word?”
=======================================

If you think that persons who deliberately try to demean others is not bullying and that speaking against that inherent injustice is being “wooses,” then you need to examine your own sensibilites with more depth.

Welcome to more Voodoo Economics via Romney and Ryan……… 14% is fine with Romney ….gosh I would love to have that tax rate.

The plan is to grow the economy….. via talk I guess….. ” working together “……Gee when has that happened in the last 4 years ?

Once Obama got his heath care package in place…… our “Hero” last president’s election loser vowed to not work with the Democrat’s again !

Yup Republican’s want the power, but don’t care about American’s.it is all about getting the black guy out of the White House.not the American people !

Voodoo Economics………. what is the Plan……. there is No plan….. just “we will work with the other side”…… kind of like Deficits don’t matter, and Mission Accomplished. ALL TALK !

Still there? Before going further, given you believe life begins at conception and that constitutes a ‘child,’ do you view that ‘child’ as having the same legal status as a ten-year-old?

When you listen to romney/ryan, they come across like if they are elected snap your fingers cuz the economy is going to boom – untruth! or that snap your fingers and the world will fear and respect us more – another untruth. It takes hard work and the economy is definately trending positive. We cannot control every event and are not the masters of the world; as soon as this mindset is buried, the better…

I think Jay had NIGHTMARES of Uncle Festor… err… I mean Joe Biden!

Or maybe Jay needed time off after realizing that the “Good Ship Obama” has hit a massive Ice Berg and is taking on water… :-)

@Mary Elizabeth

Woman’s rights as they pertain to innocent unborn babies, is just a little more complicated. To label anybody against women’s rights just because they are trying to protect innocent unborn babies is just ABSURD. You are smarter, I hope.
