Liveblog: Biden, Ryan ready to rumble

UPDATE: 9:05 On a question about the Libyan attack, Biden does well, diverting it into the larger security question. Ryan handles his part ably as well, although this “weakness.”

Whoa… the malarkey card: “Everything he said is a bunch of malarkey,” says Biden. And then backs it up. A good, strong exchange, although Ryan comes across as a bit unseasoned.

UPDATE: 9:15 Ryan takes a hard, but unrealistic, line on Iran. He sounds like he’s repeating rehearsed lines, Biden sounds like he comprehends the issue.

Biden’s forcefulness working for him very well.

I wonder if President Obama is taking notes.

9:26: “We’re going in the wrong direction,” says Ryan. I don’t think that’s going to sell. “It’s late evening in America”?

Raddatz doing well as moderator, but I think the forum is easier. Sitting there at the table gives her more control. It’s a good exchange.

9:34 Medicare and Social Security. I think Joe just hit a home run on Medicare with seniors, which is his target audience on this topic.

Although Ryan is right about Biden interrupting.

9:50 Biden carrying the argument with a combination of passion and detail.

10:00 I don’t think Ryan/Romney’s argument for sticking in Afghanistan gets them anywhere. That time is past.

Ryan failed on Afghanistan, but it’s not necessarily his fault. The vague Romney position on Afghanistan, suggesting he’d stay longer, is just hard to defend after more than a decade of U.S. blood.

10:28 Ryan has held his own; he did a good job with what he was given. But this is a Biden victory. It’s not a slam dunk; it won’t alter the race much. But Biden’s conviction carried the day.

It may and should serve as a template for his boss. An interesting endnote: I don’t recall a veep debate in which the tops of the ticket, Romney and Obama in this case, were mentioned so seldom.

————————

Among other things, it’s going to be interesting to see how successful Joe Biden is in handcuffing Paul Ryan to the ardently conservative positions that he championed before joining the ticket, and how willing Ryan will be to slough off that identity in service of the newly moderate Mitt Romney.

Not to mention Biden’s proclivity for foot-chewing.

As a retired military officer, I was struck by VP Biden’s behavior. He was disrespectful of the debate process, he often appeared out of control with his gestures and expressions, he generally acted undignified and whacky, and he came across as a babbling buffoon mixing in facts, half-truths, and no-truth political spin.

That he’s today one step away from Commander in Chief is a chilling thought.

Looks like the liveblogging here was fun, maybe I should’ve been here to paaahty as well, but…

anyway, one thing I haven’t seen from the comments worth mentioning–

I get the impression, most of the time that I see Joe Biden out in public, either stumping, or debating, or whatever–is that he’s enjoying this a great deal. And I think that’s a central part of his appeal; people like to watch performers who are, themselves, having a good time doing what they’re doing.

Ryan did a reasonable job holding his own, but I think Biden helped his side more, last night.

After watching old Joe last night and the total disrespect he showed to Ryan, it’s pretty easy to see why there are no bipartisan deals getting done. If he will behave as he did on national tv, can you imagine working with him off camera? Me neither.

The Joe Biden Workout

October 12th, 2012
6:19 am

Biden’s performance was aimed at one thing: painting the Romney and Ryan agenda as a flim-flam operation. He did it with style as much as substance. Looking directly at the camera, he said, “folks, follow your instincts,” in the middle of an argument about whether Romney’s tax plan added up. Before the debate, a Romney staffer had said one of the things that had worked well for the GOP nominee a week ago was that while voters may not have understood his policy ideas, he sounded like he understood them, which gave viewers confidence in the candidate. Biden was trying to make the same kind of transference. If he could convey exasperation and frustration with Ryan’s lack of specificity, the plans that didn’t add up, and the broader claims from the Republican team, perhaps he’d be able to make people doubt the entire Republican enterprise.

Energized the Democrat Base

October 12th, 2012

Biden won the debate, but it was a qualified victory. He energized Democrats who had been down in the dumps since the president’s supine performance, but he also energized Republicans who found him rude and dishonest. Swing voters might have been turned off, too. But it probably doesn’t matter since they’re going to vote for the top of the ticket. It was close in the post-debate polls of undecided voters. In a CBS poll, 50 percent thought Biden had won; only 31 percent thought the same of Ryan. In the CNN poll, 48 percent thought Ryan won. Only 44 percent thought Biden came out on top.
There’s an old line attributed to Bill Clinton: It’s hard for the other guy to talk when your fist is in his mouth. Biden was up to his elbow. That thrilled Democrats. Speaking of himself, Barack Obama said that he was “too polite” in the first debate. No one will say that of Joe Biden.

Looking at all this fluff about Biden is funny. I watched part of the last section of the debate. I find it hilarious that Ryan tried to paint this administration for a lack of leadership, but when he was asked specifically about what deductions he’d eliminate, his answer is that he would defer to Congress. Dude couldn’t answer the question even though he was asked for specifics several times.

It must really suck to have to back an empty ticket just to justify your hatred for Obama/Democrats.

Biden went for what seemed like an improvised, off-the-cuff, let’s sum all this up approach. It may have meandered a bit, so it wasn’t 100% effective, but it got the job done.

Ryan looked as though he were reading off a teleprompter. Obviously he wasn’t, but just as obviously, it was an incredibly canned response. It *was* a good one, mind you; it also got the job done.

So here’s my sporting-analogy take on the race so far.

Two weeks ago, Team Obama was going into the fourth quarter up by seven. (that’s not my personal take, that’s what the experts said, odds-wize.)

After the first Presidential debate, Obama had clearly thrown an interception, and I’d say at this point Biden succeeded in holding them to a field goal. Obama’s just up by four now, but still in the lead, and another field goal isn’t going to win it for the other side (but it won’t hurt, and they’ll still have time left to win.)

Obama’s got the ball back; we’ll see how this next possession goes next week, I guess.

I was about the farthest thing from a Biden fan prior to the 2008 primary races. He had a rep for being in the pockets of sleazy credit card companies.

But he won me over (particularly with his “noun, verb & 9/11″ gag[1]), and I’m glad he’s on Obama’s team. Furthermore, if the unthinkable were to happen, I have every confidence that he’d be a competent caretaker as President (although I’m not sure he’d want to run in 2016).

1. what was great about his swipe at Rudy, was that it made it socially acceptable, finally, after far too many years, to mock people who were continuing to exploit 9/11 for their own political gain. Better six years too late than never, I always say.

BORK! Or Borg.

The Secretary of Labor had decided that the Act’s requirement that employers must provide workers “employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards” meant that American Cynamid had to “fix the workplace” through industrial clean-up rather than “fix the employees” by sterilizing or removing all women workers of child-bearing age. Bork strongly disagreed. He wrote an opinion for his colleagues apparently endorsing the view that other clean-up measures were not necessary or possible and that the sterilization policy was, in any event, a “realistic and clearly lawful” way to prevent harm to the women’s fetuses.

That sounds like the sort of scum Romney would want on his side.

It’s very sad when a Vice-President who acknowledges that his administration has “crushed” the middle class over the last four years can only smile and laugh at the resulting carnage.

@Im a liberal

There are not many rational thinkers on this blog. Good luck explaining what Ryan meant to these morons. The point about the withdrawal was crystal clear to anybody with a brain…

‘and in case you have been stoned lately, Our Men and Women are being murdered almost daily BY AFGANS in uniform.’

So, more of them over there will lead to less of our soldiers getting killed? Have you enlisted?

The Fox News cons came across as a bunch of cranky old men, as usual.

The cons blogging here think they’re independents.

Taxpayer, the one that really cracks me up is that rube with that word in his name who is such an embarrassment to the US Air Force.

The guy is about as moderate/independent as your average North Korean head of state!

Well then perhaps you’ll enlighten all of us with your wisdom. Keeping in mind that Ryan said several times that both he and Romney support the 2014 exit date. Go on, I’m sure everyone is waiting to be dazzeled with your brilliance.

I’m sure you will be informed of the length of your tour and what duty station you will be assigned to by your commanding officer. Why would you think that a blogger would have such authority?

And American women loved hearing little Paul state how “elected officials” should be the ones who decide whether abortion should be safe and legal — wow.

I guess I should point out the obvious, that Martha Raddatz is continuing a shameful tradition of subjecting candidates to exactly the sort of “religious test” deemed a no-no by our Constitution.

(and yes, I know that asking pointed questions on national TV about the candidates’ respective religious views isn’t quite in violation of the Firstie, but it certainly violates its spirit.)
