Liveblog: Biden, Ryan ready to rumble

UPDATE: 9:05 On a question about the Libyan attack, Biden does well, diverting it into the larger security question. Ryan handles his part ably as well, although this “weakness.”

Whoa… the malarkey card: “Everything he said is a bunch of malarkey,” says Biden. And then backs it up. A good, strong exchange, although Ryan comes across as a bit unseasoned.

UPDATE: 9:15 Ryan takes a hard, but unrealistic, line on Iran. He sounds like he’s repeating rehearsed lines, Biden sounds like he comprehends the issue.

Biden’s forcefulness working for him very well.

I wonder if President Obama is taking notes.

9:26: “We’re going in the wrong direction,” says Ryan. I don’t think that’s going to sell. “It’s late evening in America”?

Raddatz doing well as moderator, but I think the forum is easier. Sitting there at the table gives her more control. It’s a good exchange.

9:34 Medicare and Social Security. I think Joe just hit a home run on Medicare with seniors, which is his target audience on this topic.

Although Ryan is right about Biden interrupting.

9:50 Biden carrying the argument with a combination of passion and detail.

10:00 I don’t think Ryan/Romney’s argument for sticking in Afghanistan gets them anywhere. That time is past.

Ryan failed on Afghanistan, but it’s not necessarily his fault. The vague Romney position on Afghanistan, suggesting he’d stay longer, is just hard to defend after more than a decade of U.S. blood.

10:28 Ryan has held his own; he did a good job with what he was given. But this is a Biden victory. It’s not a slam dunk; it won’t alter the race much. But Biden’s conviction carried the day.

It may and should serve as a template for his boss. An interesting endnote: I don’t recall a veep debate in which the tops of the ticket, Romney and Obama in this case, were mentioned so seldom.

————————

Among other things, it’s going to be interesting to see how successful Joe Biden is in handcuffing Paul Ryan to the ardently conservative positions that he championed before joining the ticket, and how willing Ryan will be to slough off that identity in service of the newly moderate Mitt Romney.

Not to mention Biden’s proclivity for foot-chewing.

Memo to Vice President Joe Biden

Mr. Vice President,

Owing to reasons which are sufficient to myself, I have never disrespected you or attempted to make you the object of ridicule, save the use of the colloquial version of your first name…”Joey”, which was always done with good humor.

HOWEVER, tonight you have OFFENDED me.

In you final response to a question by the moderator, you have asserted that the “only” “SACRED” duty of government was to take care of our TROOPS!

NOW, DON’T MISUNDERSTAND ME, WE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF OUR TROOPS AND “VETERANS.” That is a “sacred duty”, but
there is a greater “sacred duty.”

It is to DEFEND AND PROTECT THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES FROM ALL ENEMIES “FOREIGN” AND “DOMESTIC”!!!!

Mr. Vice President, you might want to remember that!

nobodyyouknow,

I appreciate your frustration. Things are not what you’d hoped. The current climate is not what you need. But look at it this way: shrinkage vs. growth. The economy was shrinking fast. Shrinkage stopped. (Whew!) Growth began. Yes, it’s slow, but it’s growth. If you can’t fly back up the mountain, you have to climb it one step at a time. There’s no magic jet pack, Hon. No quick fix. But that does not mean we can’t get back up it. It just means it’s going to take longer and be harder than we thought. Growth is good, so keep pushing, and don’t let it keep you down, okay? A return to the policies that shoved us off the cliff… probably not the best solution. Hang in there!

There was no slam dunk, defining moment from Biden. Ryan held his own, stumbled a few times, however, he did counter punch Biden.

Biden laughs, behaves like an idiot, but that is typical Joe. Ryan was cool, reserved, as is typical Ryan.

Would be a tie at best, however, since Biden couldnt derail Ryan. Ryan held his own against Biden, hence, win by default for Ryan.

In the long run though it probably wont matter much other than Ryan didnt blow it for Romney and Biden didnt blow it for Obama.

Would seem a tie

Nice to see a Democrat be aggressive this time. I do wish Vice President Biden hadn’t been so quick to interrupt or to laugh or to seem condescending. I’m afraid that might hurt us with the independent voters. They tend not to like “smug”, and they’re going to be terribly important in a lot of key states this time.

Jm,

I could see people thinking Joe won the debate by a slight edge if he hadn’t been so rude and out of control. If you go by the transcript its even or Biden wins very slightly. But if you saw it and saw Biden who was completely without composure then you have to give it to Ryan. Joe Biden’s demeanor was horrific and certainly not presidential for a man one heartbeat away from the presidency. That’s going to go very poorly with independents. Very poorly. And that’s all that matters.

(1) Ryan’s lack of depth of understanding regarding foreign affairs is troublesome.

(2) Biden is correct that middle class people having to pay more than $2000. more a year in the Romney/Ryan tax plan when they are just getting by is too much for them to have to absorb – especially when they must exist on lower incomes in the financial framework of the nation.

(3) Biden was wise to point out that if Romney/Ryan win this election, then 2 more Supreme Court Justices would probably be selected which would probably undo Roe vs. Wade. A woman must have the right to make her own decisions regarding abortion and birth control – which will effect her life in profound ways – with doctor, her partner, and her God/conscience. Those highly personal decisions must not be decided by politicians for her, as long as the embryo has not developed to a viable child in uterus.
