The polls remain tight, with several national pollsters giving Mitt Romney a small lead for the first time. Viewed strictly in terms of political science, rather than partisan politics, it’s a fascinating and rather sudden turn of events.
And what does it mean?
I think it’s fair to say that should Mitt Romney end up winning the presidential race, his victory will be a repudiation, rather than a validation, of modern American conservatism. I don’t know how else to interpret the fact that Romney was losing the race, badly, right up to the moment in the first debate that he ran fleeing from conservativism like a 12-year-old girl fleeing a Halloween haunted-house attraction.
Look where he stands today in terms of policy, compared to a few weeks ago, and the contrast is stunning:
He has pledged to the world that he won’t cut taxes, and most important of all he would never cut them for the rich. He also promises that he won’t do a thing about trying to outlaw or restrict abortion, and like Obama, he’s not going to kick out illegal immigrants brought here as children.
He won’t reinstate “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and his health-care plan is going to cover those with pre-existing conditions. His “47 percent” comments, he tells us now, were “just completely wrong,” and he won’t reduce spending on Medicare or Social Security and he won’t cut education either. He’s even in favor of government regulation because “you can’t have a free market work if you don’t have regulation.”
Every single one of those newly packaged positions contradicts or seriously compromises an important conservative position. He and his advisers — in this case reportedly his wife and eldest son — came to the wise conclusion that he could not win otherwise, and the market has confirmed their wisdom.
The question, of course, is how Romney would govern if actually elected. I don’t have a clue on that one.

I do.
He’ll be slightly less bombastic than GWB on foreign policy matters, but he’ll still screw things up and send Freedom Bombs to spread democracy, and we’ll be cleaning up that mess after he’s gone.
He’ll appoint Federalist Society-approved stooges to the judiciary, ensuring that landmark legislation passed by the next generation of progressives will be castrated, and the Republic’s inevitable slide into second-tier status by the 22nd century will be hastened.
Ok, I don’t actually know this with 100% certainty; I’d say I’m only about 90-95% certain of this type of outcome.
and the reason I feel so certain is that despite the flip flopping, and Mitt’s supposedly moderate past, this machine that’s elected him and got right wing legislators and judges in place is much bigger than he is.

JAY,
First, my suggestion that intelligence budget was cut by clinton is true however it was Congress (Bernie Sanders as leader) who pushed the cuts…he just went along for the ride…
Re Romney…who cares? What if he is moving more center? That may be a good thing despite typical cries from the other side that he will carry his “change of state” message if in WH…I think it would be ideal if whoever wins (this really crappy job) has to deal with a congress that is controlled by opposite party…if it is possible to get to compromise and get anything done and provide congress a modicum of respect…those dynamics at least have a chance…

“I think it’s fair to say that should Mitt Romney end up winning the presidential race, his victory will be a repudiation, rather than a validation, of modern American conservatism.”
Which was, a few short years ago, the radical right of the Republican Party. The social and foreign policy neocons. But what now constitutes, in the Party’s mind, ‘real’ conservatism.
Anyone to the left of that is a RINO, fake, a fraud, a sellout, not a ‘real’ Republican. But that is precisely where Romney goes to secure the vote of most of America.
And as Jm noted, they don’t care. They really don’t care. So long as they win, they’ll ignore a lack of adherence to philosophy, no moral political grounding, no consistency in thought. Just plain ignore it. Just so long as their guy wins, they don’t care.
That, to me, shows the utter depravity of the modern conservative Republican Party.

You can’t be that naive. Romney will have to raise taxes on the middle class to help pay for the tax cut for the rich. Mitt cares about two things. Taking care of his own kind and money…and not necessarily in that order.

Morning, Granny
I’m not so sure. So Romney doesn’t have a firm political core. I say ’so’ because he strikes me, deep down, as a pragmatic problem solver. So what I’m hoping is when he gets all the parties together Boehner will look at him and think “what’s he going to jettison now? What’s he going to give up?” and Reed will look at him and think “he’s going to reverse course on A, B and C and then ask me in front of all these people, if Republicans will compromise like that, why can’t I compromise on D?”

The Alinskyite left has so hobbled the conservatives in this country that the so called ‘conservative’ candidate is a pale shadow of the ‘liberal’ candidate. The have successfully defined and framed all political discourse so that true conservative positions on immigration, economics, entitlements, and other issues can’t even be discussed, much less acted upon. So you are happy that the society of gutless, mindless worms that the modern media and public schools have produced can’t possibly vote for anyone who has rational ideas about how to preserve the great republic that our forefathers sacrificed everything to build?
Now that’s a true accomplishment…congratulations!

About the only thing that leads me to that hope (more than a conclusion) is an article I read some time back that said Romney thinks that now is the time that it is finally possible for a Mormon (I’ll use that term now as it flows better than LDS) to become president and he wants, above all, to be the one that does it.
It’d take a whole slew of behaviorists, psychologists and theologians to sort thru the implications of subverting your core to attain a ‘good’ goal, but if we reduce it to Romney looking at winning the presidency, in and of itself, as a problem to be solved, then once he’s solved that problem he does not need to keep the strategies that got him there. It’s like acquiring an ailing company and turning it around. You make it profitable, you sell it off. Just like he may ’sell off’ what he needed to get to the presidency.
Just looking for any possible faint ray of hope in all this, Jay.

Perhaps you can document this long list of changed positions to get elected? And please, spare us things like closing Gitmo, which he attempted to do but was barred by Congress. List issues on which he has dramatically altered his position. I can think of one — gay marriage — and on that issue he can plausibly argue an evolution over time, which is how almost all Americans who support gay marriage arrived at that position. Twenty years ago, the notion was considered far-fetched.

He’ll farm out governing to right wing idealogues and repudiate what they do when it’s unpopular, yet let them run amok, destroying social programs and starting new wars which Romney will repudiate and yet stand beside them. It’s a good example, as Jack Welch put it, of “I don’t really have anything to back this up, but doesn’t it seem strange” musings developing into a conspiracy.
Here’s a good article that cuts thru the hype and gets down to the nitty-gritty of the process the government uses, as well as the reason for the seeming disparity between unemployment rates and job growth.

Gay marriage, it’s just a small thing, so, it’s ok for O to change his mind. I guess he “evolved” on cutting the deficit in half as well? Oh yeah, it’s those dang Republicans blocking him from doing so. I would venture to say that in order to cut the deficit, one should have a budget in place. Republicans again, you say? Funny he couldn’t get a single Dem to vote in favor of it either.
Was it a terrorist attack or was it a demonstration gone bad? But, I digress, that’s a small thing too?

It is as if this administration has absolutly no respect for the citizen and then they are protected by folks like JAY. Romney moving to the center is the new main street media output but who knows. I have said this many times before the debate, before the latest polls…The citizens have a clear choice..vote one way for big government and big brother telling you want kind of vehicle to drive, how warm to keep your house in winter and how cool in summer, how big a house you can live in, how many miles you can drive your vehicle in a given time period or vote for a “CHANCE” to regain personal responsibility and freedom and have a chance at what has been termed the American Dream. Strange beliefs
Whatever? That’s your answer, ‘whatever’? Then you move the goalposts?
Don’t really want to turn this into a religion discussion, but I’ve read the propaganda you’ve cited before and what you cite as ‘doctrine’ or ‘fact’ is not. It’s rather like listening to some fundamentalist or evangelical with their little tracts headlining “What Scientists WON”T Tell You THEY KNOW About the LIES about EVOLUTION!!!!”
Because they don’t understand it in the first place, they take all the anti-garbage as fact and they get a kick out of thinking they’re on a mission to save people from something.
BTW – the point of my first post was to illustrate when it comes to matters of faith, anyone can make anyone’s else faith sound stupid.
The second part of the post is to illustrate I’d done exactly what you did in your second post – take a belief system, misunderstand it then use that as a factual basis for an attack.
And before you come back with ‘well yeah, by they are lying and I’m right” I could just as easily say the same thing about my characterization of ‘mainstream’ Christianity.
As fa as you second link, you appear to not be familiar with some of the most basic teachings of mainstream Christianity. You might want to take a break and really read your New Testament where it says you will see G-d and be like him and use that as a jumping off point for reading what you should believe about theosis. So both your groups are using different words to describe the same concept, but the people who make those videos are too ignorant to see it.

Just for you, Stevie Ray, since your Google seems to be inoperative,
For the past two years, House Republicans have continued to deprioritize the security forces protecting State Department personnel around the world. In fiscal year 2011, lawmakers shaved $128 million off of the administration’s request for embassy security funding. House Republicans drained off even more funds in fiscal year 2012 — cutting back on the department’s request by $331 million.

1960’s……31%
1970’s……27%
1980’s……20%

2000’s……..0%

I throw these numbers out every few months. The question is how tax policy will reverse the trend.
Those two nasty words “globalization” and “technology” appear to be the reason for the trend. Neither Obama nor Romney address this trend. They both talk about jobs and both talk around the need to create jobs in new industries. But that has always meant government involvement and Congress appears to be reluctant to “invest” in anything requiring spending.

Nice spin, Jay. It seems that you would equate “modern conservatism” with far right radicalism, but I would expect cries of “extremism” from the media. In fact, politics is more like NASCAR. You have to oversteer toward a particular point in order to wind up where you have to be. Obama did the same in the compromise in extending the tax cuts in exchange for something he wanted. In truth, for an R to be elected in Mass, he could only be a moderate, as I imagine we’ll find Romney to be. I consider myself conservative, but to me that means primarily fiscal conservatism with a socially moderate lean. We all know that extremes to both the left and right serve to motivate the base, but in reality, neither party can govern that way, or you get the gridlock we now experience. Whether D or R, presidents get the edges sanded down when actually governing. It’s far more about leadership and vision and one or two big ideas than about policy details. Remember too that 60% to 80% of voters consider themselve “in the middle” politically, myself included. What we’ll see from Romney is a focus on fostering a growing business climate with regulation, small tweaks in the tax system with little effect, little interest in the social issues, fiery rhetoric on foreign affairs but without a “rush to war” mentality because of both the financial and personal cost, and hopefully, the ability to bring both sides to the table to discuss the needed reform of the big three–Social Security, Medicare and Defense. Romney’s proven he can turn around bad situations before, therefore I believe that America will give him a chance.
If we ignore the speeches and slogans, and concentrate on what people have actually done, which is the best predictor of future performance, I think this choice is obvious. I’m not drinking any Kool-aid, but in my mind, a resume of solid success trumps a life of political “service.”

The problem is the way that we only look at the “conservative” side of the political spectrum as being bankrupt and absolutely not up to the task.
We should also look at the other “side” of modern liberalism, which is utterly out of ideas and reduced to peddling conservative ideas with a ‘nicer’ face, conservative ideas with a ‘human face’. The problem is not one or the other party, it’s the bankrupt two-party fraud itself, which acts as a front for an ever rightward shift of governance by the ruling class and a ruthless attempt to roll back the social gains of the 20th C.

Because of a lack of political education (not just on your part, but many others too) you may THINK that what we’ve seen represents “extremes” by the left as well as the right. But in reality the main crisis we have is that there is no radical, militant left. There simply is none. We only have as I said above two faces of modern liberalism, though on the right we have a takeover by an increasingly nihilistic and frankly proto-fascist type of neoliberalism.
Neoliberalism reigns unchallenged in our day, and it’s destroying the world as we speak, with Europe teetering once again at the precipice of fascism.

I don’t believe conservatives are saying that we should cut taxes for the rich. Taxes for the rich are fine as they’ve been for a decade. Nor have conservatives clamored for no regulations. Find me the conservative Republican that believes in absolutely no regulations, and I’ll show you a strawman. As far as Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, that’s generational. Younger conservatives don’t care.
Those are great strawman arguments, but even if they weren’t, that doesn’t mean Romney isn’t still preferable to the other guy. That you rarely praise Obama, and spend most columns bashing Romney just shows how weak a candidate Obama is now. He can’t run on his record, he can only try to push false arguments about all the rights Romney has no interest in taking away.

["Clinton compared Romney's performance in Denver to a sales job at the Boston private equity firm where the Republican presidential nominee made his personal fortune.

"So he shows up, doesn't really know much about the deal and says, 'Tell me what I'm supposed to say to close.' The problem with this deal is the deal was made by severe conservative Mitt," alluding to Romney's description of himself in February as having been a "severely conservative" governor in Massachusetts. A few days before the debate, Clinton added, advisors had urged Romney to recast himself as a moderate."] — L.A. Times

I would imagine that Romney will go along with most legislation put forth by a Republican Congress. Funny and Depressing at the same time. Auto manufacturers are having to make lighter cars because Americans keep getting fatter. In part from driving cars. Ah, the irony…..
——
Starting with the statistic that Americans’ weight gain is burning more than one billion gallons of excess fuel each year, Allstate and Cars.com have created an infographic explaining the complex struggle between fuel efficiency and passenger weight (check it out below). The short version: as automakers explore their options to meet ambitious federal corporate average fuel economy standards of 54.5 mpg by 2025, obese passengers make the efforts more complex.
The infographic, called “The Seesaw Battle of Fuel Efficiency,” looks at what automakers are doing to meet the 54.5 mpg mandate during a time when more than one third of American adults are obese. For the automakers, cutting down weight is important because every 100 extra pounds can cut fuel efficiency by up to two percent. To improve efficiency, automakers are reducing vehicle weight by using more lightweight, high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum. They are also changing accessories inside the car, such as using MP3 players instead of CD players, flash drives instead of owner’s manuals and air pumps instead of spare tires. To paraphrase Jay Leno, take out all you want, we’ll eat more.

GM,
And how has President Trillions performed for the african americans? There is no measure available to suggest they are better off than in 2008…since 2007, both poverty rates and unemployment in the african american population are materially worse..
Obama used his speech to call for stronger African-American families, saying, “If we want to stop the cycle of poverty, we must start with our families.”
But the percentage of adult African-Americans in poverty rose from 19.8 percent in 2007 to 23 percent in 2010, according to the Census Bureau. The percentage of African-American children in poverty rose from 34.5 percent to 39.1 percent in 2010. African-Americans’ formal unemployment rate jumped from 9 percent in June 2007 to 14.5 percent this August.
And the reality is worse: The percentage of African-Americans in the workforce fell from 58.6 percent in June 2007, down to 52.8 percent in August 2012. Less than half of young African-American men have full-time jobs.

In fact, all the bigotry and racism-slavery charges that continue to get play as there star becomes harder to defend will only serve the purpose of potential violence if the american people don’t grace him with another 4 years…you better vote cuz many of the young and minorities who voted in 2008 aren’t coming out..

Sometimes I wonder how liberals think. Perhaps its being uninformed or maybe they are just plain stupid…
Completely wrong. It’s only unpopular to the extent that it did not go nearly far enough.
If this was the case then why wasn’t more far left loons elected in 2010 to go even farther. Bam! I just debunked you pretty good uh?
You’re probably right though in your predication of all the ways Romney will rubber stamp hard-right legislation.
You are correct on that assessment. But think about it. Its only the far left trying to paint Romney as a moderate. Why are Conservatives not spewing foam about it as the left are trying to do? Bookman is a prime example although he’s not taken seriously by most sane people…

From fox news:
Workers at the Compact Power manufacturing facilities in Holland, Mich., run by LG Chem, have been placed on rotating furloughs, working only three weeks per month based on lack of demand for lithium-ion cells.
Randy Boileau, a spokesperson for LG Chem in Holland, told FoxNews.com that battery production is expected to pick up once Volt assembly lines in Detroit resume production on Oct. 15. He said the facility has spent the past two years building infrastructure and conducting pre-production “test runs.”

DDR, dog whistles and codes are fantastic aren’t they? They allow those who use them and those who respond to continue plausible deniability. That is why we look for things that show the pattern. Disparate impacts, etc. Of course, they continue their denial despite multiple demonstrable showings of a large contigent of those who openly vent hatred, significant disparate impacts, less “intrusive” alternatives and repeated demonstration that this is not a “single” case. All that requires some hint of rationality, something that it is impossible for most of our cons to truly comprehend because they are so wrapped up in wild conspiracy claims without evidence or facts.

Apparently, the LG Chem battery factory benefited form 150M in taxpayer funds to built batteries for the Volt. The employees of this plant have been on rolling furloughs for months due to the poor sales of the Volt. Each Volt that GM produces costs Chevy 50K. GM has only sold 7600 of these cars this year…… sales were supposed to top 40K. GM has offered to cut the price of this car by 25% and still can’t find buyers. At the plant opening, Bozo stated in a speech that this plant would be on the “cutting edge” of bringing manufacturing jobs back to America. Seems it didn’t turn out as he predicted. If this – read Romney – is what you want running this country…and you succeed in getting him (and the men behind the cretin) in ‘official’ charge…then whatever positive example for the rest of the world we were supposed to represent will have been squandered – perhaps forever – and it’ll be on you…a fact that the rest of us won’t let you forget. And we also can say that the very same conservative Republicans who were recently complaining loudly when Mitt was losing with their ideas are now saying nothing at all.

Sadly, I think that it is more than Romney’s policies that has caused many to switch to Romney in the last weeks of this election cycle. I think what that switch basically shows is that many of the American people are impressed by aggression and that they will accept “surface reality” (the image Romney “projects” rather than what he believes (which continues to vary day to day, hour to hour) in order to accommodate someone leading the nation who they perceive as a dominating personality. (Romney showed definite traits of the bully in the debate with Obama.)
That glorification of aggression and dominance will effect American foreign policy in shaping a more hardline approach to world affairs, and election of Romney will say to the world that America expects to maintain its power and dominance of others in the world. Moreover, election of Romney will effect the brutality of sensibilities at home which can cut people, who do not earn much money in their working class jobs, from unemployment insurance, health insurance if they lose their jobs, Social Security unless it is a 401k, any remnants left of a real pension, and Medicare unless it is really Vouchercare.
Electing Romney will cause more CEOs to believe that they are superior human beings to their workers and, thus, treat those workers as Romney and the coal miners’ boss did when they mandated that those coal miners stand behind Romney when their hearts were not with Romney (and even mandate that they vote for Romney if they wish to keep their jobs as David Siegel implied to his lowly workers.)
If these traits of dominance, aggression and stratification of people by power and wealth are what the majority of American respect and what this nation will come to stand for, then America will lose the moral authority in the world. I will simply have to accept that newly created reality, and be saddened in witnessing it unfold. Lies will have defeated truth. However, I do not believe that the American people will elect Romney. We shall know, shortly.

Do you have examples of that? I am probably what you would characterize as “far left” and I’m certainly not painting him as a moderate. I frankly don’t know where he fits on the spectrum and I suspect we won’t know until we get a year or two into his administration.
Stevie Ray:
Those figures on ACA really don’t say much if you ask me. It’s clear that people are largely just guessing here; they don’t really know. No one really does. I do find it interesting that that last question about the extent that the uninsured will be reduced under ACA. I took from the survey choices that no one was contending that the number of uninsured would grow or stay the same, which is interesting don’t you think? Even if the number of uninsured only comes down modestly, that’s something, right? I think that says something that the people framing the questions don’t even deny that ACA will at least cut into the no. of uninsured at least some.
Also, the question about whether ACA can stand if the mandate falls gives away the game, too. Sounds to me like the responses confirm my point that people want the benefits of it to stand, even if they are squeamish about the mandate itself.

Well, they’re good for his “numbers”; even if what they’re saying sounds more like the braying of jackasses then real speech.
StevieR: African americans in terms of unemployment across the board, unemployment for youths and children born into poverty have all materially increased since BO has taken office..I’m sure there exists no shortage of exceptions but you can’t deny the facts..
How about the fact that BO doesn’t own a company, and can’t single handedly HIRE all the people who don’t have jobs? How about another fact that every time he’s tried to propose legislation to GENERATE jobs, Republicans have blocked it? How about one more fact — Republican congress ran on a platform in 2010 of JOBS, JOBS JOBS!!! And haven’t even TRIED to propose comprehensive legislation to enact on their promises?
And before you pull out that tired line about “The DEM SENATE!!!!!”; please be advised that I’ve actually SEEN some of those proposals, (SoCoBro hooked up to their website and showed it to us); and not one bill, let me repeat, NOT ONE BILL, that the repugs initiated had ANYTHING to do with jobs. The only JOBS listed in any of those bills was in the heading, NOT in the language of the bill.
I agree the deficit is nothing new and all in DC are accountable..however the fact that it has increased more in 3 years than in previous 8,
that has been disputed, on this blog, so many times that I won’t even deign to post YET AGAIN, the link that proves that statement a lie. It’s just a waste of time — I’ve come to the conclusion that you cons LIKE being conned. It must be something in the DNA.
StevieR: I have not idea what you are saying about BO I can hire you comment..
See statement above.
the fact is and regardless of who is at fault, african americans in the whole are not remotely better of in term of youth and general unemployment rate and kids born into poverty…
However they are STILL better off under Obama then they’d EVER be under another Dubya Clone.

He has a history of that and it also seems that the powers that be in the party have finally seen the demographic tsunami about to hit them if they don’t run like hell from the rightwing fruits and nuts. What is called “modern conservatism” more closely resembles something from the days of the inquisition and crusades. It is so obvious that the party needs women and Latinos a heck of a lot more than they need wingnuts.

It’s expected that you promise a bunch of stuff you know will never happen and then do whatever the lobbyists tell you to after you’re elected. See close Gitmo, reverse tax cuts on wealthy, keep unemployment below 8%, send 2 brigades to Afghanistan, etc., etc., etc.

Mary Elizabeth: “I think what that switch basically shows is that many of the American people are impressed by aggression and that they will accept “surface reality”
I think I would disagree with this assessment.
The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of people are nothing like us. They do not spend their days writing on blogs and thinking about the ins and outs of policy. To be blunt: the vast majority of people do not know what to think, don’t know what they really think about issues. Their heads are filled with vague contradictory scraps of more or less shallow pseudo-facts about things and they lack a larger reference point for bringing it all into focus. For this they look to politicians and parties to show some soft aspect that appeals to them, usually it’s some vague criterion like “tough guy” firmness, strength of character, etc.
So when they see a president come out after 4 years in office and get confronted by a guy who is obviously playing fast and loose with facts (people don’t know exactly how he’s being fast and loose, they just can sense that that’s what he’s doing) and all the president can do is bumble, shrug, and look constipated, it has a devastating effect on their confidence in him.
The depressing fact is (or encouraging depending on your standpoint) that people are attracted to even a shady character like Romney even if they disagree with him or distrust him, if he can show bravado and a certain brazen courage. That’s what Romney showed to brilliant effect. And frankly I’m not sure Obama will be able to recover from it, or more to the point, if I think he even should be able to.

Nine months ago, Jim Garlow, an evangelical pastor and leader of California’s anti-gay marriage initiative, called Mitt Romney “untrustworthy” and “not visceral on the issues that are cardinal to me.” It was a sentiment shared widely among religious conservatives. On Sunday, Garlow stood in his San Diego pulpit and told his flock he was voting for Romney.

Dirty Dawg, I cannot agree with you that the majority of Democrats in Congress will be just as much obstructionists as the Tea Partiers have shown themselves to be in obstructing Obama’s initiatives, if Romney is elected as our President.
And, I think the fact that the Democrats will not be of that brutal sensibility (at least not over the extended duration of time that Republicans have displayed those strong armed tactics while Obama has been President) is a good thing for the nation, especially in the long-run.

Meaningless. He governed in the “bluest” of blue states and wasn’t particularly popular at that. As president, he’ll be the head of the most radical right wing Republican party and a political establishment as a whole that is the furthest to the right that we’ve perhaps ever seen, so it’s hard to calculate the pressures that will be brought to bear on him, but the pressure to moderate cannot be counted on, to say the least.

Welcome to the Occupation he’s going to need the votes of moderates, independents, Latinos, and women to get reelected a heck of a lot more than he will need the wingnuts. The rightwing will cease to exist as their 65+ aging old angry white guys go to the other side. In fact, if the republicans don’t embrace the changing demographic in this country they might as well disband the party, as Laura Ingraham has stated. And if they don’t beat Barack Obama they may never win another national election. There’s a reason they have great difficulty in senate and presidential elections. Republican state legislatures can’t gerrymander states and nations like they can congressional districts.

They all looked at me like I was a fool. Even his ex-wife, Brenda, was like, “He LOVES you. If you told him how you really feel, he’d do it for you”.
So, I told him I no longer wanted to be a single married lady. I wanted a husband to show off to all of my single girlfriends; and with all the turmoil in the middle east, I didn’t want him to go back — i’d rather be a divorcee than a widow.
So, like I said, we’re trying to find a middle ground. I don’t want him to resent me for giving him an ultimatum but I can’t live a half-life anymore.

=====================================
I agree with you on that statement, above, Welcome, in that our President did not perform well in the debate. But the debate was a low ebb for him and does not represent his values nor who he is. Also, I agree with you that most Americans are swayed, unfortunately, by projections of “bravado and brazen courage” – which Romney displayed – more than by policies.
Many analysts believe that Americans vote with their “guts,” or their gut reactions to candidates, more than with their minds. We both agree, I think, that that is what has happened in the change of polls which reflect such a dramatic change in the American public since the debate. If you notice, however, your words of choice of “bravado and brazen courage” are not far in connotation from mine of “aggression and dominance.” I simply go further in the negative connotations of all of those words which I described through the detail in my post.
The reason that I went further than you, in saying that many Americans value aggression and dominance, was because I believe that this nation has been fairly equally divided into two basic sensitbilities for the past 50 or 60 years. I also believe that one of those sensibilities will emerge as the prevailing sensibility (at least for the next few years) through this election. I have described previously on this blog those two sensibilities that face Americans – one is a more “muscular” sensibility that values dominance and control, power, wealth, hierarchial status among people. The other is a sensibility that values collaboration, service, egalitarian and intellectual/spiritual enlightenment. Of course, the real truth is that all of these values ebb and flow in all of us daily (both categories of values) but I believe that, in the course of human events and evolution, the less muscular and more enlightened values will ultimately prevail. Maybe not in my lifetime, but ultlimately. “The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice..” MLK
My brother told me, just a day or two ago, that our father had told him, “You cannot work for both money and servitude (service to others) at the same time; you must choose one or the other.” Ultimately, the world will have to choose; not just individuals. One fosters life and one fosters death, in my mind, in a metaphysical sense.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A freshman congressman running for re-election on a pro-life platform urged his pregnant mistress to get an abortion a decade ago, according to a transcript of the recorded conversation.
The undated phone recording appears to have been made before Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais’ divorce from his wife, Susan, was finalized in 2001. According to the transcript, DesJarlais tells the unidentified woman that he is concerned that she hadn’t taken steps toward terminating the pregnancy.
“You told me you’d have an abortion, and now we’re getting too far along without one,” DesJarlais is quoted as saying. “If we need to go to Atlanta, or whatever, to get this solved and get it over with so we can get on with our lives, then let’s do it.”
DesJarlais on his website espouses a platform that opposes abortion, saying: “All life should be cherished and protected. We are pro-life.”
Do as I say do…not as I do. My morals are situational when they personally effect me. Too much rhetoric not enough walking the talk.

How will Romney Govern, well, if he has the Republican Extremist majority that’s controlling the 112th congress now then his Governing will be Extreme. Romney just goes with the flow and that flow right now and most likely if he’s elected, would be Right Wing Extremism. Then look out, all the Social Programs will be on the chopping block. Those are Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Pell Grants, Planned Parenthood which he said he would end if he’s elected, Gone! Affordable Care Act, forget it, Gone. All those programs and more used by those 47% that Romney has already said he doesn’t care about. There are two programs that you can count on Romney installing and that is to give the Wealthy that 2% Tax Cut, the Tax Cut that will cost the American People Trillions of dollars! And to give Corporations a Tax Cut, a Tax cut they don’t need because most of them avoid paying Taxes now through loopholes.
