The polls remain tight, with several national pollsters giving Mitt Romney a small lead for the first time. Viewed strictly in terms of political science, rather than partisan politics, it’s a fascinating and rather sudden turn of events.
And what does it mean?
I think it’s fair to say that should Mitt Romney end up winning the presidential race, his victory will be a repudiation, rather than a validation, of modern American conservatism. I don’t know how else to interpret the fact that Romney was losing the race, badly, right up to the moment in the first debate that he ran fleeing from conservativism like a 12-year-old girl fleeing a Halloween haunted-house attraction.
Look where he stands today in terms of policy, compared to a few weeks ago, and the contrast is stunning:
He has pledged to the world that he won’t cut taxes, and most important of all he would never cut them for the rich. He also promises that he won’t do a thing about trying to outlaw or restrict abortion, and like Obama, he’s not going to kick out illegal immigrants brought here as children.
He won’t reinstate “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and his health-care plan is going to cover those with pre-existing conditions. His “47 percent” comments, he tells us now, were “just completely wrong,” and he won’t reduce spending on Medicare or Social Security and he won’t cut education either. He’s even in favor of government regulation because “you can’t have a free market work if you don’t have regulation.”
Every single one of those newly packaged positions contradicts or seriously compromises an important conservative position. He and his advisers — in this case reportedly his wife and eldest son — came to the wise conclusion that he could not win otherwise, and the market has confirmed their wisdom.
The question, of course, is how Romney would govern if actually elected. I don’t have a clue on that one.

Jay here is what is at play–the candidate Mitt Romney was able to actually speak directly to the American people, and his policies make sense to millions. Up to now not the only interpretation of Mitt has been thru the tainted lenses of the American bias press. The more exposure he gets the better it is for his chances to win this election. That is hard to realize when you are a idiolog pundit but not veryone agrees with the media and their defination of leadership. Mitt with two more debates will continue to surge and will win this election.

Funny and Depressing at the same time. Auto manufacturers are having to make lighter cars because Americans keep getting fatter. In part from driving cars. Ah, the irony…..
——
Starting with the statistic that Americans’ weight gain is burning more than one billion gallons of excess fuel each year, Allstate and Cars.com have created an infographic explaining the complex struggle between fuel efficiency and passenger weight (check it out below). The short version: as automakers explore their options to meet ambitious federal corporate average fuel economy standards of 54.5 mpg by 2025, obese passengers make the efforts more complex.
The infographic, called “The Seesaw Battle of Fuel Efficiency,” looks at what automakers are doing to meet the 54.5 mpg mandate during a time when more than one third of American adults are obese. For the automakers, cutting down weight is important because every 100 extra pounds can cut fuel efficiency by up to two percent. To improve efficiency, automakers are reducing vehicle weight by using more lightweight, high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum. They are also changing accessories inside the car, such as using MP3 players instead of CD players, flash drives instead of owner’s manuals and air pumps instead of spare tires. To paraphrase Jay Leno, take out all you want, we’ll eat more.

Compared to Obama Romney is about as far right as you can get.
Are you serious? Obama himself is pretty center right, and the problem is that we just don’t know about where Romney really stands, but it is probably somewhat to the right of Obama though not too far, on most issues.

If you want to know who the “real” Romney is, examine what his dad, George did. Mitt was raises with his father’s ideals. Also, take a look at how Mitt governed Massachusetts. He is a moderate pragmatist. Always was. Still is. His positions are not very different from Obama’s. The biggest difference is that Mitt is an effective administrator and chief executive.

Let me put to rest the fears those of you on the left have regarding race and president Obama. Obama’s dismal failure as president will not be blamed on the color of his skin. Unlike the lefties who’s vote is predicated on race, we on the right base our vote on the content of one’s character and their ability to do the job we are hiring them for. Obama’s failure has nothing to do with his race, He demonstrated dishonesty has nothing to do with his race. He will be replaced simply because he is a dishonest human being and a Marxist. His failure will not harm the chances of future minorities to become president, but the blind following of his ideals and dishonest charachter will.

GM,
And how has President Trillions performed for the african americans? There is no measure available to suggest they are better off than in 2008…since 2007, both poverty rates and unemployment in the african american population are materially worse..
Obama used his speech to call for stronger African-American families, saying, “If we want to stop the cycle of poverty, we must start with our families.”
But the percentage of adult African-Americans in poverty rose from 19.8 percent in 2007 to 23 percent in 2010, according to the Census Bureau. The percentage of African-American children in poverty rose from 34.5 percent to 39.1 percent in 2010. African-Americans’ formal unemployment rate jumped from 9 percent in June 2007 to 14.5 percent this August.
And the reality is worse: The percentage of African-Americans in the workforce fell from 58.6 percent in June 2007, down to 52.8 percent in August 2012. Less than half of young African-American men have full-time jobs.

Randy Boileau, a spokesperson for LG Chem in Holland, told FoxNews.com that battery production is expected to pick up once Volt assembly lines in Detroit resume production on Oct. 15. Disparate impacts, etc. Of course, they continue their denial despite multiple demonstrable showings of a large contigent of those who openly vent hatred, significant disparate impacts, less “intrusive” alternatives and repeated demonstration that this is not a “single” case. All that requires some hint of rationality, something that it is impossible for most of our cons to truly comprehend because they are so wrapped up in wild conspiracy claims without evidence or facts.

Apparently, the LG Chem battery factory benefited form 150M in taxpayer funds to built batteries for the Volt. The employees of this plant have been on rolling furloughs for months due to the poor sales of the Volt. Each Volt that GM produces costs Chevy 50K. GM has only sold 7600 of these cars this year…… sales were supposed to top 40K. GM has offered to cut the price of this car by 25% and still can’t find buyers. At the plant opening, Bozo stated in a speech that this plant would be on the “cutting edge” of bringing manufacturing jobs back to America. Seems it didn’t turn out as he predicted. I’ve got to say, reading all the right wing swill here has pretty much convinced me that an ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ has taken over. ‘You people’, to borrow a description from ‘the first rich lady’, have devolved into the worst example of the worst of America…driven only by greed and prejudice and nurtured by ignorance and cognitive dissonance. If this – read Romney – is what you want running this country…and you succeed in getting him (and the men behind the cretin) in ‘official’ charge…then whatever positive example for the rest of the world we were supposed to represent will have been squandered – perhaps forever – and it’ll be on you…a fact that the rest of us won’t let you forget. By the way, you’ll find that whatever’s left of the Democrats in Congress can be just as obstructionist as your tea-partiers…can’t wait to hear how Romney will re-etch-a-sketch that.

I guess the thousands of Africans Americans who worked in the auto industry from parts to supplies are not grateful for Obama saving their jobs, oh lets not forget about the thousands of African Americans taking advantage of job training in colleges that Obama has implemented.
Minorites were leading in groups without health care I guess they are not grateful for Obama?
Lets not forget about the mintories veterans who are getting assistant from the Obama adiministration after comming back from Iraq, yes minorities look at things and are more grateful then angery whites who hate the President because he is black.

K71 — “Why are all you liberals so critical of the Mormon faith whereas Islam can do no wrong?”
Who says that’s what we think? I, for one have never said or thought any such thing.
In case you’ve forgotten, I’m an atheist, and from my perspective, christianity, judaism, wicca, islam, shinto, animism and buddhism are all cut from the same cloth. That said, it’s people’s RIGHT to believe whatever damnfool creation myths and Enchanted Man In The Sky tales they want.
From where I’m standing, K71, a christian like you talking smack about islam is as ridiculous to me as a Star Trek fan holding forth on why Captain Kirk is superior to Captain Picard. It’s just pointless bickering about fiction as far as I can see.
If you want to see me diss some muslims here on the board, then get some over here to post. Maybe you can get into a pizzing match with them and I can nibble on Cheetos and laugh at you AND them.

Oops! My bad!
his gloating is an affront to all those still suffering who are not remotely better off..
You know that’s really funny coming from you Stevie R. When the jobs report came out four weeks ago and they were HIGH, you were so gleeful about those numbers I thought at one time you were stroking your……..keys…..and typing at the same time.
of the 15% of those out of work, underemployed or stopped looking, how many of those would say they are better off?
Better off than the alternative? The same stupid policies that got us in this mess int the first place? I’d say ALL of them.
Of course most of those who blog here are not suffering..what difference does that make?
Unlike our Conned counterparts, the majority of the people who do blog here CARE for their fellow man. They’re not trying to take away what little they do have, like UI Benefits, Food Vouchers, School lunches, etc; or calling them moochers and loosers.
We actually UNDERSTAND that they’re in pain — and not just mouthing inannities like a puppet with Rush LimpBalls hand up their azz.

But we can say that if Romney had tried to win the primary on this new moderate stuff, he would have failed miserably.
And we also can say that the very same conservative Republicans who were recently complaining loudly when Mitt was losing with their ideas are now saying nothing at all.
So does this tell us that they’re just waiting to see if he will be elected, after which he’ll belong to them again like during the primary?
I don’t see any other way to read it, Jay, do you?

Sadly, I think that it is more than Romney’s policies that has caused many to switch to Romney in the last weeks of this election cycle. I think what that switch basically shows is that many of the American people are impressed by aggression and that they will accept “surface reality” (the image Romney “projects” rather than what he believes (which continues to vary day to day, hour to hour) in order to accommodate someone leading the nation who they perceive as a dominating personality. (Romney showed definite traits of the bully in the debate with Obama.)
That glorification of aggression and dominance will effect American foreign policy in shaping a more hardline approach to world affairs, and election of Romney will say to the world that America expects to maintain its power and dominance of others in the world. Moreover, election of Romney will effect the brutality of sensibilities at home which can cut people, who do not earn much money in their working class jobs, from unemployment insurance, health insurance if they lose their jobs, Social Security unless it is a 401k, any remnants left of a real pension, and Medicare unless it is really Vouchercare.
Electing Romney will cause more CEOs to believe that they are superior human beings to their workers and, thus, treat those workers as Romney and the coal miners’ boss did when they mandated that those coal miners stand behind Romney when their hearts were not with Romney (and even mandate that they vote for Romney if they wish to keep their jobs as David Siegel implied to his lowly workers.)
If these traits of dominance, aggression and stratification of people by power and wealth are what the majority of American respect and what this nation will come to stand for, then America will lose the moral authority in the world. I will simply have to accept that newly created reality, and be saddened in witnessing it unfold. Lies will have defeated truth. However, I do not believe that the American people will elect Romney. We shall know, shortly.

I don’t recall gloating over a negative job report other than suggesting that it wasn’t a good development for BO…just as this new jobs report, however controversial as alledged by deflecting blind CONS, is not a good development for GOP.

meh, if the Dems fail to hold a Senate majority, you can bet your bottom dollar that, with Mitt in the White House, those venerated Senate rules would change mighty fast.
(and even if they didn’t, any GOP shyness about significant bills being “rammed down our throats” through budget reconciliation, would magically disappear.)

Joseph: “Its only the far left trying to paint Romney as a moderate”
Do you have examples of that? I am probably what you would characterize as “far left” and I’m certainly not painting him as a moderate. I frankly don’t know where he fits on the spectrum and I suspect we won’t know until we get a year or two into his administration.
Stevie Ray:
Those figures on ACA really don’t say much if you ask me. It’s clear that people are largely just guessing here; they don’t really know. No one really does. I do find it interesting that that last question about the extent that the uninsured will be reduced under ACA. I took from the survey choices that no one was contending that the number of uninsured would grow or stay the same, which is interesting don’t you think? Even if the number of uninsured only comes down modestly, that’s something, right? I think that says something that the people framing the questions don’t even deny that ACA will at least cut into the no. of uninsured at least some.
Also, the question about whether ACA can stand if the mandate falls gives away the game, too. Sounds to me like the responses confirm my point that people want the benefits of it to stand, even if they are squeamish about the mandate itself.

Krystal: Jay’s a good man. I would block them. They really do pollute his blog.
Well, they’re good for his “numbers”; even if what they’re saying sounds more like the braying of jackasses then real speech.
StevieR: African americans in terms of unemployment across the board, unemployment for youths and children born into poverty have all materially increased since BO has taken office..I’m sure there exists no shortage of exceptions but you can’t deny the facts..
How about the fact that BO doesn’t own a company, and can’t single handedly HIRE all the people who don’t have jobs? How about another fact that every time he’s tried to propose legislation to GENERATE jobs, Republicans have blocked it? How about one more fact — Republican congress ran on a platform in 2010 of JOBS, JOBS JOBS!!! And haven’t even TRIED to propose comprehensive legislation to enact on their promises?
And before you pull out that tired line about “The DEM SENATE!!!!!”; please be advised that I’ve actually SEEN some of those proposals, (SoCoBro hooked up to their website and showed it to us); and not one bill, let me repeat, NOT ONE BILL, that the repugs initiated had ANYTHING to do with jobs. The only JOBS listed in any of those bills was in the heading, NOT in the language of the bill.
I agree the deficit is nothing new and all in DC are accountable..however the fact that it has increased more in 3 years than in previous 8,
that has been disputed, on this blog, so many times that I won’t even deign to post YET AGAIN, the link that proves that statement a lie. It’s just a waste of time — I’ve come to the conclusion that you cons LIKE being conned. It must be something in the DNA.
StevieR: I have not idea what you are saying about BO I can hire you comment..
See statement above.
the fact is and regardless of who is at fault, african americans in the whole are not remotely better of in term of youth and general unemployment rate and kids born into poverty…
However they are STILL better off under Obama then they’d EVER be under another Dubya Clone.

He’ll govern from the center Jay. He has a history of that and it also seems that the powers that be in the party have finally seen the demographic tsunami about to hit them if they don’t run like hell from the rightwing fruits and nuts. What is called “modern conservatism” more closely resembles something from the days of the inquisition and crusades. It is so obvious that the party needs women and Latinos a heck of a lot more than they need wingnuts.

It’s expected that you promise a bunch of stuff you know will never happen and then do whatever the lobbyists tell you to after you’re elected. See close Gitmo, reverse tax cuts on wealthy, keep unemployment below 8%, send 2 brigades to Afghanistan, etc., etc., etc.

Mary Elizabeth: “I think what that switch basically shows is that many of the American people are impressed by aggression and that they will accept “surface reality”
I think I would disagree with this assessment.
The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of people are nothing like us. They do not spend their days writing on blogs and thinking about the ins and outs of policy. To be blunt: the vast majority of people do not know what to think, don’t know what they really think about issues. Their heads are filled with vague contradictory scraps of more or less shallow pseudo-facts about things and they lack a larger reference point for bringing it all into focus. For this they look to politicians and parties to show some soft aspect that appeals to them, usually it’s some vague criterion like “tough guy” firmness, strength of character, etc.
So when they see a president come out after 4 years in office and get confronted by a guy who is obviously playing fast and loose with facts (people don’t know exactly how he’s being fast and loose, they just can sense that that’s what he’s doing) and all the president can do is bumble, shrug, and look constipated, it has a devastating effect on their confidence in him.
The depressing fact is (or encouraging depending on your standpoint) that people are attracted to even a shady character like Romney even if they disagree with him or distrust him, if he can show bravado and a certain brazen courage. That’s what Romney showed to brilliant effect. And frankly I’m not sure Obama will be able to recover from it, or more to the point, if I think he even should be able to.

Nine months ago, Jim Garlow, an evangelical pastor and leader of California’s anti-gay marriage initiative, called Mitt Romney “untrustworthy” and “not visceral on the issues that are cardinal to me.” It was a sentiment shared widely among religious conservatives. On Sunday, Garlow stood in his San Diego pulpit and told his flock he was voting for Romney.
I’m proud to say I don’t vote the same way as these people. Skeeeery.
