New jobless claims plummet, now below long-term average

According to the Labor Department, initial jobless claims fell to 339,000 last week, a decline of 30,000 from the previous week.

That’s notable for several reasons. First, it’s the lowest weekly total since February 2008. It’s also a 16.3 percent decrease in initial jobless claims from the same week a year ago, and perhaps most importantly, it is lower than the long-term average of 363,460 jobless claims filed per week.

There are reasons to be cautious. One-week fluctuations are not long-term trends, and economists would be more reassured if numbers in the next few weeks continued this trend. But as the chart below clearly indicates, jobless filings peaked in March 2009 — two to three weeks after passage of the stimulus bill — and have been steadily declining ever since.

UPDATE: From CNN, another reason for caution:

Much of the drop last week was caused by an anomaly, a Labor Department analyst told CNNMoney. One state posted a large decline in claims, which is not typical during the last week in September.

The drop probably occurred because that state didn’t fully process end-of-quarter claims, the Labor Department analyst said. If that’s the case, it’s possible initial claims could shoot back up next week, once those claims are processed.

Thanks Jay- when you grow up and write an informative (it can still be biased) blog then skimming is the desired path of the blog. Let’s see:

Jobless claims plunged to 339,000 this week, putting them at a four-and-a-half-year low and drastically lower than the 370,000 economists expected, the Labor Department announced today. But there was a fly in the ointment. A department spokesperson said that one large state accounted for a large portion of the decline, the AP reports. A Wall Street Journal report indicated that the state “didn’t report additional quarterly figures as expected.”

A CNBC correspondent later tweeted that the mystery state appears to have failed to process “its typical seasonal workload,” Business Insider reports. Weekly job numbers are prone to volatility anyway, the department noted. “Throw out the number and we’ll try again next week,” one trader tells CNBC.

hmmm- what is it like to be your age and pretend to be a girl on the sideline cheering her home team?

Maybe share with your facebook followers that Rs are not the only tax schemers?

The Internal Revenue Service urged a bankruptcy judge to reject solar panel maker Solyndra LLC’s bankruptcy plan Wednesday, saying it amounts to little more than an avenue for owners of an empty corporate shell to avoid paying taxes.

“The undeniable conclusion is that tax benefits drive this plan,” attorneys for the IRS wrote in a bankruptcy pleading.

Arguing that the bankruptcy court ought not confirm a plan “whose principal purpose is tax avoidance,” attorneys said in filings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware that the tax breaks would be worth more money than funds set aside for creditors.

Taxpayers are on the hook for more than a half-billion dollars after the company filed for bankruptcy last year, just two years after winning a loan guarantee from the Department of Energy.

What’s more, government attorneys said that as far back as 2010, Solyndra owners had “planned meticulously” to be able to use Solyndra’s net operating losses to offset future tax liabilities.

Zillow.com, you will get a graph of your home, your zip code and your cities average value. Is it 100% correct? No, but it is pretty darn close most of the time.

My own experience and that of many in the real estate markets are that zillow is often dramatically wrong.

The numbers don’t make any sense when looking at it in relation to economic history.

As we have been reminded repeatedly in recent months, tax avoidance is legal.

Tax *evasion* is not.

Well said. Can’t argue with the legality, but is tax avoidance also the right thing to do? Hint: for another example of tax avoidance, as opposed to tax evasion, see an almost endless number of posts about Mitt Romney’s tax returns.

SOMEONE needs to be held accountable for the lives lost in Libya.

I spent a career planning raids, search warrant executions, “buy/busts”, arrests, etc., etc.

Had “anyone” been hurt or killed during one of those endeavors my every action as a supervisor before and during would have been scrutinized and I WOULD HAVE BEEN HELD ACCOUNTABLE if I had failed to follow policy or exercise due caution.

I expect no less from our State Department.

JAY,

I concede that aspect of our discussion but did come across this little diddy from your queen Pelosi..

PELOSI: It’s also important to note that the Republican appropriation in Congress gave the administration $300 million less than it asked for for the State Department, including funding for security.

BLITZER: Are you suggesting that there was a financial aspect to what happened in Benghazi, Libya. That the U.S. was not enough money to protect American diplomats?

PELOSI: No what I’m saying is Congress has the right of oversight but it also has the power of the purse. … We also have to look to ourselves for that funding question. $300 million less than what the administration asked for.

I guess the State Departments lack of response to requests for additional security didn’t go upon deaf ears due to a lack of available funds..Seems successful although talking point for DEMS but irrelevant to the tragedy at hand..

The DEMs are trying to provide talking point to a GOP talking point…I think DEMS laying blame back on the GOP for poor actions taking on DEM watch is tough sell…Given the fires burning in the ME, the GOP talking point will trump DEMS deflection of blame..

For fiscal 2013, the GOP-controlled House proposed spending $1.934 billion for theState Department’s Worldwide Security Protection program — well below the $2.15 billion requested by the Obama administration. House Republicans cut the administration’s request for embassy security funding by $128 million in fiscal 2011 and $331 million in fiscal 2012. Romney uses a line, I find interesting. He tells the crowd how bad things are and then he trails off with “and that is the only reason I am running for President, to help you”. I think back at his run four years ago when he indicates that he is riding this horse because he is the only one that can ride it. If he was so uniquely made for this day this moment, of near depression, with plans he thinks are too delicious to share, what bug got up him four years ago, before all these perfect conditions of misery came face to face with the perfect man. The only reason he was running then had to be another only reason, this one had not developed yet or had it. As Bush ran the government, maybe this white knight saw the pain Bush was going to lay on us and said “Ma these people need me, I think I am going to run a couple of times for president and in six or ten years from now I am going to fix these people’s problems, whatever they may be.” The only reason he is running…

Now lets hope the economy doesn’t fix itself before this poor man can take the credit or even get elected.

Housing prices have been improving on a national basis which is good news. The bad news is that access to home mortgages is much more difficult for most consumers since Dodd-Frank. New mortgage origination is at a 16 year low. The legislation has yet to clarify how banks are supposed to book home mortgages on their balance sheets. Thus the mortgage industry is dominated by 4 “too big to fail” firms with the largest balance sheets which completely undermines Dodd-Frank’s purpose of controlling systematic risk. Because the banks don’t know how the regulators are going to view home mortgages on their balance sheets, the vast majority of home loans are government guaranteed through the GSE’s. FNMA/FREDDIE have lost in excess of $180B since 2008 and FHA announced last week that they are going to go to Congress to request a $1 B loss bailout after the November election. The Obama administration offers no solutions to the housing crisis. As a desperate measure to show some progress, Obama sued J P Morgan for $29B last week for poor underwriting done by Bear Stearns. Of course, J P Morgan was forced to buy Bear Stearns in 2008 by the Federal government. Taxpayers financed that deal with a Geitner $23 B loan. Only in Obamaland would the government sue a division of a company that the government forced the company to buy in the first place- all at taxpayer expense.

The Chevy Volt is one of the worst business decisions ever made in corporate history. Encouraged by a president who had no business running a car company but had an endless amount of money to make a point, a group of sycophants blue smoke up his ass to convince him that the Volt had a future. That’s all it took. Initial projections were 40k cars/yr. To make these 40K cars, GM had to spend close to 50K each to produce them. That’s about 20M and change to put them on the market. The initial MSRP was a bit over 39K. That put the car out of reach for the market it was intended to appeal to. That meant that they lost 11K for every one they produced. Then the plan went to hell when no one wanted to buy one. That started the rolling furloughs which went on for months on the assembly line, costing more money in union wages when they were not even working. They are just going to power up the assembly line starting 15 Oct. Then the real whammy hit when they only sold 7600 of these glorified golf carts because no one wanted to buy them. That put the battery plant that made the batteries for these sorry excuses for a car out of business at a cost to the American taxpayer of an additional 150M.
GM stock is at mid twenties now and will need to double in value for them to pay off their debt to the taxpayer. Don’t hold your breath. Meanwhile over 50% of this joke is owned outright by the unions as a payback for their political support for Bozo’s election efforts.

“…his victory will be a repudiation, rather than a validation, of modern American conservatism.”

Wake up and smell the hanging chads, Jay. Most of us are not conservatives, or liberals, but independent moderate types hovering around the middle. THAT is where the critcal mass of votes are and Mitt knows it.

Any candidate unwise enough to get into bed with either extreme of the lunatic fringe – think George McGovern and Newt Gingrich – will just be a historical footnote.

Regnad. Do the math. Bailout cost at least $25 Billion as of now and could go much higher. There are about 100 million taxpaying filers in the US.

That amounts to $250 per taxpaying filer at current cost estimate, which is probably too low.

2) “Early voting is not good for the country. It would be similar to having a jury trial where half-way through a couple of jurors stood up and said, ‘We’ve heard enough. Let’s vote!’.

huh? complaining about early voting? wonder why…

There are signs that this strategy has paid dividends, too. Almost 1-in-5 respondents in the Thursday NBC News-Wall Street Journal-Marist poll of Ohio said they had voted early; 63 percent of those who had already cast ballots said they had voted for Obama.

oh. that ’splains it.

Joe, 2:26,

Then, pray tell, what other reason would they have to close? Hell, Bozo even offered a tax credit of 8K to buy one on these cars and lowered the price by 25% and they still can’t sell them. Why have a battery plant when you have nothing to put it into?

Drudge — “Joe Hussein – I actually know a lot about it and Pew, Gallup and even Rasmussen have been overly skewing Dem based on 2008 trends and reciprocal data from the census.”

“Overly skewing?” (laughing) :D

Tell me, what would be an *appropriate* distribution and how you’d determine it. Go ahead. I can hardly wait to hear this. :D

“Even so, in national polls O is down an average of 2 across the board.”

In the “skewed” polls you deride. :D

“How did I do? Tell me how you conduct poll research when you get a second.”

I don’t make up demographic distributions and use them as fudge factors in my results the way outfits like Rasmussen do. There’s no way to look into the future to determine what Election Day 2012 turnout will be, so there’s absolutely no basis whatsoever — 2008 census data or historical turnout models included — to gauge what *this* election’s turnout will be. Anyone who tells you differently is simply looking for a way to justify plugging their own biases into their results.

If Rasmussen or any other polling outfit thinks it can look into the future and accurately determine the 2012 voter turnout across the country, then they should simply look an *extra* day into the future and tell us the election results instead. :D

You Republican fascists never mention Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, AIG, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, PNC Financial Services Group, US Bancorp, Capital One, Regions Financial Corporation, American Express, Bank of New York Mellon Corp, State Street Corporation, Discover Financial.

Strange, huh?

NEVER.

NOT ONCE.

EVER.

Even though the amount of money that YOU gave them was MAGNITUDES OF DEGREE larger that forked over to GM.

Why do you so adore these white collar criminals?

If libs were like pubs, you’d see a lot of spam about “Mitt thinks he can balance the budget by cutting PBS – it’s only .00000012346 of the budget.” You’d see it over and over – hear it on radio an TV, and see it on every blog.

I wonder what the difference is?

Love the latest. I know you boys don’t see the good stuff glued to commie TV, but confirmed by a Duke professor, the wedding ring on Obama, the writing on it is Arabic….. Now, that’s not news to me, but some might like to know. I guess IF true Michelle might have gotten in a pawn shop in Dearborn, who knows.
