New jobless claims plummet, now below long-term average

According to the Labor Department, initial jobless claims fell to 339,000 last week, a decline of 30,000 from the previous week.

That’s notable for several reasons. First, it’s the lowest weekly total since February 2008. It’s also a 16.3 percent decrease in initial jobless claims from the same week a year ago, and perhaps most importantly, it is lower than the long-term average of 363,460 jobless claims filed per week.

There are reasons to be cautious. One-week fluctuations are not long-term trends, and economists would be more reassured if numbers in the next few weeks continued this trend. But as the chart below clearly indicates, jobless filings peaked in March 2009 — two to three weeks after passage of the stimulus bill — and have been steadily declining ever since.

UPDATE: From CNN, another reason for caution:

Much of the drop last week was caused by an anomaly, a Labor Department analyst told CNNMoney. One state posted a large decline in claims, which is not typical during the last week in September.

The drop probably occurred because that state didn’t fully process end-of-quarter claims, the Labor Department analyst said. If that’s the case, it’s possible initial claims could shoot back up next week, once those claims are processed.

Yes, Steve, I do. Thanks for bringing that up. It’ a great example of how to lie using statistics.

The vote being cited is for final passage of the compromise budget bill. A lot of House Republicans voted against that compromise because in their minds, the cuts not just to State Department security but across the board weren’t deep enough. They voted against it because they wanted much bigger cuts.

The initial House-passed version contained those much-deeper cuts, and it was passed almost exclusively with Republican votes and almost no Democratic support.

So again, thanks for the opportunity to demonstrate just how desperate and deceptive some people can be.

“Huh? More reliable? Lets see, the August and July reports were revised upward by 50k from a similar number. So you think a 50% error is “reliable” ???”

And you think a sample of 2 as in 2 months is reliable?

The 114,000 number could very well be revised upwards. That would not surprise me in the least. I was referring to the more volatile household report as being inaccurate which according to analysts is how the labor dept arrived at the dramatically lower 7.8% new unemployment number.

For the sake of argument though lets say the 114,000 is revised upward to say 144,000. That would not be enough to drop unemployment all the way from 8.1 to 7.8%. In fact it the 144,000 number as has been noted many times is below the 150k threshold that we need just to keep pace with new entrants into the workforce. So how would unemployment really drop that far with one upward revised job number of say 30,000 when in reality the revised number wouldn’t even be enough to keep treading water? The overall unemployment number would probably be adjusted back upwards as I stated.

TD – That would not be enough to drop unemployment all the way from 8.1 to 7.8%.

Thulsa, you’re trying to connect the two numbers and that simply doesn’t work in the short term. The uproar is mainly based on the fact that the rate is below 8. This destroys a republican talking point, which is ironic since the 8% estimate by Obama was also based on very flawed data and the rate was at 8.3% one month after passage of the stimulus.

USMC — “IRS says ‘tax avoidance’ at heart of Solyndra bankruptcy plan”

As we have been reminded repeatedly in recent months, tax avoidance is legal.

Tax *evasion* is not.

“The uproar is mainly based on the fact that the rate is below 8.”

Don’t Forget,

No. That’s not at all what the uproar is about. The uproar is that it dropped that precipitously in one month and that this one month just happens to be 5 weeks before the election. I heard in the news that the last time unemployment dropped that much in one month was in 1983 when Reagan’s boom was underway and the economy was steamrolling along at something like a 7% growth rate. And as you well know the economy is growing at more like a 1 or 2% growth rate. This is why such a significant drop given the terrible economic climate is simply not realistic. The numbers don’t make any sense when looking at it in relation to economic history.

If anyone wants to check their home value and see the rise/fall just go to Zillow.com, you will get a graph of your home, your zip code and your cities average value. Is it 100% correct? No, but it is pretty darn close most of the time.

Disabled is the new unemployed. After 99 weeks of unemployment ran out for people who couldn’t find a job, disability was the only thing left to try. Also, score one (irony alert) for encouraging employers to hire 2 20-hour workers instead of 1 40-hour worker. That way more people are off the official unemployment rolls. I had always considered the U-3 unemployment rate as the most reliable. Now I wonder if U-5 or U-6 is more indicative of the true rate.

“So if I get you correct, the DEMS in house or senate had no power to negotiate this cut or otherwise maintain historic levels of security?

The Dems in the House did not have that power. The Dems in the Senate did, and they used that leverage to force House Republicans to accept smaller cuts than they wanted.

A lot of House Republicans didn’t like that compromise, and voted against it as a protest. To now cite that protest vote in favor of deeper cuts in this fashion is truly shameless.

Heard these today:

1) “The Secret Service spends a lot of time and effort ensuring that our currency is genuine and not counterfeit. Otherwise, public confidence in our currency would deteriorate. The ‘currency of the honest vote’ is just as important to our democracy.”

2) “Early voting is not good for the country. It would be similar to having a jury trial where half-way through a couple of jurors stood up and said, ‘We’ve heard enough. Let’s vote!’.

Voting day should be VOTING DAY!”

USMC,

Kamspam violation! The fine for that is $5000 and you are now ordered to pay restitution to the blog community of 6,000 posts of meaningless drivel such as fake Thomas Jefferson quotes or “the smoking gun in the mushroom cloud” gobbledeegook. Gonna be a long day and you may need a new keyboard. Get to work.

Yes, zillow is pretty good – and depressing in my case….however, a little patience and I do believe this real estate fiasco will shake out in another two to three years. I can wait, not going anywhere. (god willing)…
