New jobless claims plummet, now below long-term average

According to the Labor Department, initial jobless claims fell to 339,000 last week, a decline of 30,000 from the previous week.

That’s notable for several reasons. First, it’s the lowest weekly total since February 2008. It’s also a 16.3 percent decrease in initial jobless claims from the same week a year ago, and perhaps most importantly, it is lower than the long-term average of 363,460 jobless claims filed per week.

There are reasons to be cautious. One-week fluctuations are not long-term trends, and economists would be more reassured if numbers in the next few weeks continued this trend. But as the chart below clearly indicates, jobless filings peaked in March 2009 — two to three weeks after passage of the stimulus bill — and have been steadily declining ever since.

UPDATE: From CNN, another reason for caution:

Much of the drop last week was caused by an anomaly, a Labor Department analyst told CNNMoney. One state posted a large decline in claims, which is not typical during the last week in September.

The drop probably occurred because that state didn’t fully process end-of-quarter claims, the Labor Department analyst said. If that’s the case, it’s possible initial claims could shoot back up next week, once those claims are processed.

Wonder how many people are actually jobless but don’t qualify as a “new” jobless claim?

With $16T of debt and a trade agreement with Communist China in place that benefits their workers at the expense of ours, I suspect there will continue to be a lot of joblessness, regardless of what the cherry-picked statistics say.

Well, let’s see…the debate between Romney and Obozo didn’t turn out too well. The deflections to explain the debate were useless. The Benghazi cover-up is sinking Team Obama’s hope of reelection. And the 7.8% unemployment cooked books by the BLS turned out bad.

Now…Team Obama tells the Labor Department and liberal operatives to hit ‘em again with another set of cooked-up numbers. Unbelievable!

You know what? By keeping this game up every week, those nasty numbers that keep presidents from being elected will evaporate by the time Nov. 6 rolls around. Do you really thing that the American public is that dumb?

I saw an interview with Chaffetz in which he was directly asked that question. He admitted to voting to cut the budget for embassy security and then immediately complained that the Obama administration had made the wrong decision by not *expanding* consular security in Benghazi.

Let me get that straight, Congressman — you cut the budget, but you expected the President to *increase* security anyway?

“Also, if we had all those CIA folks in the area, it seems to me that they had failed miserably in intelligence gathering..just wondering..”

The President of The United States has many duties. Keeping the unemployment rate around 4 to 4 and one half percent is NOT one of them.

What would you have the president do? Assemble all the CEO’s in America and demand they start hiring?

The President is just that, President. He is not King and he does not have absolute power. And, he cannot govern effectively if members of the other Party have a majority in the House and block every move he makes to improve things.

yes, we need to cut spending – but sensibly, not with a 15% haircut across everything (except defense, natch)

I don’t think we’re that far apart.

(I’m not even a big fan of massive Defense cuts anytime soon; I think that needs to be plotted responsibly, that “peace dividend” shouldn’t be a joke, but meanwhile, a LOT of people depend on those industries.)

My line in the sand is around 4-5% unemployment. I think until we’re at that level, we shouldn’t even think about cutting programs, we should be finding new projects to fund. We ought to believe in this country fercryinoutloud, instead of pulling up the damn drawbridges and huddling. So to speak.

“My line in the sand is around 4-5% unemployment. I think until we’re at that level, we shouldn’t even think about cutting programs, we should be finding new projects to fund.”

My problem with the government budgeting is twofold:

1) use-it-or-lose-it rewards profligacy, not thrift. when I lived in DC, every August the radio stations were blanketed with ads for computer companies that could process invoices overnight, so that agencies who had money to spare could use up their budget buying laptops and such, whether they needed them or not. THAT needs to change.

2) I think that there are enough loser-a$$ programs that need to be cut, that we could redirect the funding (and even some of the personnel) to the programs that really work well and desperately need the funding and staffing. unfortuantely, it’s a matter of taking time to really look at what the programs do, assess if they’re successful and let people know that they can be honest with you because you will do what you can to ensure that they will have employment in one form or another.

It’s not just in government; it happens in academia and business, too.

I’m talking overall spending. I want Obama, if nothing else, in his second term to get people weaned off this notion that, somehow, spending is baaaad. Maybe we should stop calling it an “investment,” stop trying to pretty it up; call it “free money” instead if we have to, as Atrios likes to say.

How is it that the gubmint puts out there the unemployment “survey” and says its 7.8% when using real numbers its 14.7%? Seems fishy to me and certainly would to the average voter if the media would report this information. And why has our workforce simply disappeared? Liberal Pariah – 12:06

It’s a lot easier to break something than to make it. Bush could not create jobs but he could and did get us into two useless and hugely expensive wars. He and his buddy Cheney also cozied up to Big Business while they shipped jobs overseas and laid off workers here with gusto and zeal. And, of course, gas prices and medical costs went up and up while Republican political war chests increasingly swelled with Big Business campaign bribes, er, contributions.

They BOTH suck

You are more than welcome to assume and assert what others say, but that doesn’t make it so. It might mean something to your little pea brain and your IP spoofer, however that isn’t saying much

Interesting thing is that Georgia’s unemployment rate went UP. Now of course this is all the evil black Muslim guy’s fault and has nothing to do with the fact that we have a Republican Governor, Legislature, Congressmen, Senators etc.

I would laugh to if our country wasn’t in such dire straights….

No Joseph, “dire straits” is what Obama inherited. Banking industry crashing, stock market crashing, auto industry devastated by the collapse, losing 600,000 jobs a month, bin laden living comfortably in Pakistan, trillion dollar deficit inherited from Bush. Except for the deficit, every one of those items has improved.

That’s what I was getting at but I’m sure you noticed Obama using the dead wife of a former steel worker to try and score cheap political points. At least Romney has the class to say he won’t use this story again…

Well, that’s awful news ’cause Obama and the libruls will get the credit for it and right before the election too any drop in unemployment is good news, I reckon. Good thing the Republicans got control of the House and set things up so the decline in unemployment could happen. I don’t know where we’d be without a Republican House—in a bread line, I reckon.

Have a good Thursday everybody.

Yes you guys give me the giggles when you don’t inform yourselves and dig deeper into the numbers. The difference between the U-3 and U-6 is 6.9%. Lets go back to to Sept 07′ when the difference was 5%. One would wonder why there’s such a difference. How is it that the gubmint puts out there the unemployment “survey” and says its 7.8% when using real numbers its 14.7%? Seems fishy to me and certainly would to the average voter if the media would report this information. And why has our workforce simply disappeared? If workforce participation were the same today as it was when Obama took office the unemployment would be around 11%. Makes you wonder… And cherry picking numbers as Bookman does quite often makes him even more irrelevant in the conversation…

as I said, the shift from U6 happened decades ago because of the change in the structure of the workforce. the country is no longer one in which people either own a business or are employees. Now, people consult, work flex-time, etc, so just because they are not “employed” in a traditional sense, doesn’t mean that they are unemployed, so measurement should reflect accordingly.

“The difference between the U-3 and U-6 is 6.9%. Lets go back to to Sept 07′ when the difference was 5%”

yes. the difference isn’t a constant – sometimes people are looking, sometimes they are discouraged.

“And why has our workforce simply disappeared? If workforce participation were the same today as it was when Obama took office the unemployment would be around 11%. ”

the reason the unemployment rate fluctuates is the number of people who are looking vs. those who aren’t. when hiring starts to pick up, the number of people who may have previously not been counted because they were discouraged, start to be included again as they say that they are actively looking.

“Makes you wonder…”

not really – if you educated yourself on how it works, it all makes sense.

Yes its great news for American families that home values are at an all-time low and middle class income has fallen almost $5000 since Oblama has assumed office.
