New jobless claims plummet, now below long-term average

According to the Labor Department, initial jobless claims fell to 339,000 last week, a decline of 30,000 from the previous week.

That’s notable for several reasons. First, it’s the lowest weekly total since February 2008. It’s also a 16.3 percent decrease in initial jobless claims from the same week a year ago, and perhaps most importantly, it is lower than the long-term average of 363,460 jobless claims filed per week.

There are reasons to be cautious. One-week fluctuations are not long-term trends, and economists would be more reassured if numbers in the next few weeks continued this trend. But as the chart below clearly indicates, jobless filings peaked in March 2009 — two to three weeks after passage of the stimulus bill — and have been steadily declining ever since.

UPDATE: From CNN, another reason for caution:

Much of the drop last week was caused by an anomaly, a Labor Department analyst told CNNMoney. One state posted a large decline in claims, which is not typical during the last week in September.

The drop probably occurred because that state didn’t fully process end-of-quarter claims, the Labor Department analyst said. If that’s the case, it’s possible initial claims could shoot back up next week, once those claims are processed.

Jay,

Good stuff…I’m an actuary and to be honest, have hard time reconciling weekly, monthly unemployment calculus as it lends itself too much to skewing by either BS party..on one hand we have U6, african american and other minorities increased unemployment rates, we have 800,000 new people employed despite 114K new jobs (I didn’t realize the inventory of current jobs was so high in terms of full time, non-seasonal jobs)…too many variables even for me.

But if unemployment claims are down and completely due to new employment..that is good news for BO and another challenge to GOP…

Romney being a financier, I’m sure he knows how significant it is when a stock’s price crosses either the 50-day or 200-day moving average.

So he should recognize and acknowledge the momentous significance of this. If he fails to, then he’s clearly a liar, but I think we already knew that about him.

JAY,

More confusion..

Unemployment fell from 8.1% to 7.8%, aided by an increase in part-time employment: “Some 582,000 Americans took part-time positions because of slack business conditions or those jobs were the only work they could find,”

Part time or seasonal is better than nothing to be certain but….I’m not sure exactly how good this trend is and whether it will buck economists prediction that it will take 8-10 years post recession end to get employment numbers back to beginning levels…

“This is just getting stupid. After expectations of a rebound in initial claims from 367K last week (naturally revised higher to 369K), to 370K (with the lowest of all sellside expectations at 355K), the past week mysteriously, yet so very unsurprisingly in the aftermath of the fudged BLS unemployment number, saw claims tumble to a number that is so ridiculous not even CNBC’s Steve Liesman bothered defending it, or 339K. Ironically, not even the Labor Department is defending it: it said that “one large state didn’t report some quarterly figures.” Great, but what was reported was a headline grabbing number that is just stunning for reelection purposes. This was the lowest number since 2008. The only point to have this print? For 2-3 bulletin talking points at the Vice Presidential debate tonight. Everything else is now noise.

It is also sad that the US “economy” has devolved to such trivial data fudging on a week by week basis, which makes even the Chinese Department of Truth appear amateurish by comparison. Needless to say, Not Seasonally Adjusted initial claims jumped by 26K to 327K in the past week but who’s counting. Finally, what is the reason for ongoing QEternity if the employment situation is now back to normal. Finally, in completely ignored news, because who needs global trade when you have toner cartridge, and generally ink, the US trade deficit in August rose by 4.1% to $44.2 billion, on expectations of a deterioration to $44.0 billion. Then again nobody talks about the US trade deficit during presidential debates so all good here. ”

urged his pregnant mistress to get an abortion

oh what the heck, since he brought it up, from:

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/10/10/todays-reminders-that-abortion-opponents-hate-women-more-than-love-embryos/

In other fun anti-choice news, Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.) is being accused of ordering his mistress to get an abortion, despite his claims to be “pro-life”. I’m a little surprised that anyone is surprised by this. I basically assume all these rich Republican dudes who oppose abortion rights aren’t actually against abortion itself. They just assume, correctly, that if abortion is banned, they will have enough money and connections to scare up a discreet abortion provider to cover up their own indiscretions. The point of banning abortion isn’t to end abortion, no matter how teary-eyed they get about “life” or how many disingenuous claims they make about ending abortion. They know—believe me, they’ve been told!—that abortion bans don’t end abortion. They’re counting on it! Keeping up the “family values” image without the ability of mistreses to abort inconvenient pregnancies is notoriously difficult to do.

If you assume that the belief that drives anti-choicers is the belief that women are the property of men, preferably conservative men, then DesJarlais’s alleged behavior in line with that belief. He believed that it was his right and not his mistress’s to decide what happened with her pregnancy. He certainly believed his right to hold on to his marriage trumped his mistress’s right to out their relationship with her pregnancy. According to the divorce documents, he really conducted himself like he was some old school patriarch, cheating whenever he wanted while trying to control his wife through violence.

[...]

Hypocrisy is considered a juicy news hook, and so DesJarlais telling his mistress to abort and then getting all sappy about embryonic life for political reasons will no doubt be the narrative of this story. But I’m more compelled by this consistency. DesJarlais is part of a larger movement of conservative men who are furious about feminism, and who believe that women should be returned to a subservient role. You know, like the idealized 50s, where you could cheat on your wife and she couldn’t leave you, and threaten your mistresses with social ruin to make sure they took you up on your offer to get them to doctor who would chart that abortion as relief for your menstrual issues. Hypocrisy is entertaining, but the real story here is the deeply held conviction that women exist to serve men and shouldn’t really have rights of their own.

STANDS,

I read this article with great interest when you originally posted it….IMO it is completely irresponsible to suggest we can simply continue on our merry fiscal way…consider our 70 trillion dollar actual debt..

Heres a little diddy that our children and Medicare recipients in the next 10 or so years will get excited about:

Given current policies, each of the 78 million boomers can expect, on average, to receive $50,000, in today’s dollars, from these programs in each and every year of retirement. Multiply 78 million boomers by a $50,000 annual payment and you get close to $4 trillion per year. This helps you see why our nation’s true indebtedness is so extraordinarily high.

why thank you for the flowery language!! :-)

you know how I feel about the comparison to Greece – it’s not even apples and oranges, it’s apples and screwdrivers to compare our economies

as far as gov’t spending in a crisis goes, I’m a total Keynesian … and I think that the austerity-driven double-dip recession that Europe is experiencing totally supports the fact that government spending when the economy is taking a downturn is what primes the pump for a recovery. hell, Reagan never said that he believed it, but LOOK at his deficit spending when he was in office – he walked the walk of a true Keynes believer.

you know how I feel about rating agencies – and what drove the downgrade to AA.

As far as China goes, the US is the largest purchaser of treasuries, not China. And we are China’s biggest customer, making us “too big to fail”. You know the saying – if you owe the bank $1000, the bank owns you. If you owe the bank $1,000,000,000, you own the bank.

Even CNN tempered this news with the whole story:

Claims for unemployment benefits fell sharply last week to their lowest level in more than four years, but the drop was due mostly to a technical issue.

…Much of the drop last week was caused by an anomaly, a Labor Department analyst told CNNMoney. One state posted a large decline in claims, which is not typical during the last week in September.

The drop probably occurred because that state didn’t fully process end-of-quarter claims, the Labor Department analyst said. If that’s the case, it’s possible initial claims could shoot back up next week, once those claims are processed.

Usually, most states report a rise in initial claims at the end of the quarter. The Labor Department seasonally adjusts its figures to account for those trends, but this year the rise was smaller than expected because of that state.

Many economists speculated that the state is California, but the Labor Department will not confirm that until it publishes its state breakdown next week.

” jobless filings peaked in March 2009 — two to three weeks after passage of the stimulus bill — and have been steadily declining ever since.”

Great news. That’s a trend.

So yeah, things ARE getting better.

Unless Republicans want to argue declining jobless claims is a bad thing.

“The drop probably occurred because that state didn’t fully process end-of-quarter claims, the Labor Department analyst said. If that’s the case, it’s possible initial claims could shoot back up next week, once those claims are processed. ”

aw, diddums … did you miss the very first part of Jay’s post??? “One-week fluctuations are not long-term trends, and economists would be more reassured if numbers in the next few weeks continued this trend.”

the bigger story is the nearly continuous downward trend … THAT is the good news here. not the anomaly

Adam – My pointing out the facts of the price of gas over time and now does not “endorse” a correlation.

then what was the point of the post?
You basically said, the sky wasn’t as blue under W…whether you “endorsed” it or not …you did certainly suggest a correlation was in play….or you are just posting random facts that serve no purpose

Here’s to “Part Time AND Burger Flipping” jobs…

People that work in the fast food industry are generally on their feet all day in a hot work environment and do honest work.

Vilifying them is a reflection on you, not them.

DONTFORGET,

Love to see any evidence that confirms an additional 2 million jobs excepting for GOP…where were all these jobs gonna originate from?

For instance, Mark Zandi, chief economist with Moody’s Analytics and former economic adviser to Sen. John McCain, called it a “laudable effort” that would “go a long way toward stabilizing confidence, forestalling another recession, and jump-starting a self-sustaining economic expansion.”

He estimates that Obama’s plan would add nearly 2 million jobs to the workforce, reduce the unemployment rate by a percentage point, and boost economic growth by 2 percentage points next year.

An estimate by another firm called Macroeconomic Advisers was similarly optimistic, saying the plan would boost GDP by total of 1.3 percent and create roughly 1.3 million jobs by the end of 2012.

How did lack of funds prevent Obama from saying go protect the Ambassador? Or was he not personally involved like when he killed BinLaden?

Thank you President Obama for Investing in America, for not letting the auto companies go bankrupt like Romney wanted to do. For The Stimulus that stabilized the economy from the free-fall that Republicans bailed out of. They wanted it to crash so they could try to blame you for the mess that they made.

Never trust Republicans with foreign policy or economic policy!

“Would they please just report the REAL rate of unemployment! That includes those who are actually looking, those who have quit looking, and, those who never have and have no intention of looking!”

Are you saying this is how the REAL rate of unemployment was reported during the Bush Administration? The Clinton Administration? The GHW Administration?

Or it was somehow changed? Do you happen to know when and why and by whom?
