Here’s what Mitt Romney had to say yesterday in an interview with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register:
“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda.”
———–
Here’s what Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul told Katrina Trinko of the right-wing National Review after the above interview:
When I asked Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul to clarify what Romney had meant there (since the Huffington Post at least is taking it as a position that “could put [Romney] at odds with congressional Republicans who have made limiting abortion central to their messages”), she e-mailed, “Governor Romney would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life.”
—————–
Here’s what Mitt Romney himself had to say in an interview almost exactly a year ago with Mike Huckabee on Fox News:
—————-
Here’s Mitt Romney in 2007, saying that as president he would be delighted to sign legislation outlawing abortion nationwide:
————–
And of course, here’s Mitt Romney in 2002 discussing his stern pro-choice views, in which he says “I’ve been very clear on that: I will preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose and am devoted and dedicated to honoring my word in that regard.”
A lot of smart, honest, well-informed Americans feel that human life begins at the moment of conception. While I disagree, I very much respect the passion and sincerity of their argument. What I cannot respect is someone who, like Romney, claims to share that passion and sincerity yet also tries to tell everyone else that don’t worry, he won’t do anything about it, that it’s pretty much just a debating point for him.

I think Romney’s suggestion that each state should come up with its own health care reform is patently absurd — unless there are overarching federal guidelines, in which case we might as well have a national program. We live in a highly industrialized, highly mobile, intricately interwoven society and we are supposed to be the “United” States. So what happens to someone with a pre-existing condition who lives in a state that requires insurance companies to take them who is offered a better opportunity in a state that doesn’t? That person should not be stuck.

RF,
Yes Medicaid is another Government sponsored program that is upside down and is not a plan that will state the test of time either. I feel that the Fed government should cede the HC issue to the states with financial sharing of fortunes…the MA program is a great example of a successful model on a state level…this ACA is a dog in its current form…single payor much better but will also exceed any current cost estimates geometrically.

The anti abortionists have a hearing problem. Mitt’s got them confused along with the entire country. I repeat: Why all this useless discussion? It’s typical Romney! Romney was for abortion rights before he was against them and now is for them but by tomorrow will be against them. Get it! It’s so simple even a flip flopper would understand. Ann Romney will visit the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida today, which has received millions from the stimulus (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act). Her husband and his running mate Paul Ryan both opposed the measure, which President Obama signed into law in February of 2009.
Romney and Ryan have criticized the president’s stimulus and its results. Romney has said the president’s vision has failed and released a statement saying “the only thing President Obama’s stimulus has produced is a series of broken promises” on the three-year anniversary of the stimulus. These comments haven’t stopped the candidates from campaigning at sites that have benefited from the funding, however.
It’d be nice if they said “I’m sorry your husband opposed the stimulus bill. We received money from it, and we benefited TREMENDOUSLY”. (but, we know they won’t. It would be nice though)

“I don’t trust Romney. He shouldn’t make my son’s death part of his political agenda. It’s wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama,” said Barbara Doherty, Glen’s mother.

Agreed except I’m thinking best outcome for all is that whoever is elected pres faces a majority of the opposite party in both houses…he will be force to compromise…maybe something will get done…we do need more moderation and less radical BS..

Mick, if you have a solution to the fraud problem, I’m sure somebody in Washington has a job for you.
Denying the 47% number is part of the problem. When a tax increase means nothing to half the people, our future is pretty bleak. See Greece.

Parkway: running Newt would have been even worse. At least Romney sounds sane as he changes his stance. Newt’s stances are all just plumb crazy!
My apologies in advance for this comment to td: we all know how proud he is of the A in Newt’s class in college…

Romney may very well also have mixed feelings. And he probably also feels that currently the economy is way more important than abortion issues. As do I.
Then y’all need to be keenly aware that most GOP-controlled state legislatures — including and especially Georgia’s — do not share your priorities.

S. Ray — “JOE, I have no idea what the link is between this likely cover up for political gain and some dinner some guy had with a sitting SCOTUS…What am I missing?”
The “some guy” was Vice President Cheney, who had a case pending before the SCOTUS *at the time he had dinner and went on hunting trips* with Justice Scalia. A hue and cry was raised, but Scalia refused to recuse himself from the case involving Cheney and that was that.
So, now that we know that dinner and hunting trips together do not create a conflict of interest — per Justice Scalia — then we can easily infer that attending a wedding and reception don’t create one either.
QED.

SR @ 1.22, I really don’t have time to dilly dally over which issues Obama happened to come up short over weighed most heavily in a majority of voters’ minds, although the notion that a significant number considered deficit reduction a major reason is pretty laughable.
I think I’ll just leave you with this linkee and say it makes as good a case from the left as any.
