I don’t think that he has to do that. He simply has to do demonstrably better than he did last time, and I think it’s reasonable to imagine that he will. Obviously if he continues to look as off-his-game as he did last week, it’s going to continue to hurt him.

Did everyone somehow forget about 2004, how dreadful Bush looked in not just the first but really all three debates? Have we forgotten “want some wood?” and “I hear there’s rumors on the, uh, Internets?”

GWB’s approvals were bouncing around 50 as well (if you look at the historical chart you’ll see Obama’s actually bounced above GWB at this point in his term).

And for those who keep going “Obama’s the second coming of Jimmeh Carter” you might want to have a look at where that poor soul’s approvals were around this time, compared to Obama’s.

What license does a candidate have to suddenly become his opponent to win an election? The right literally does not care what Romney says, they are like the beauty queen who marries the rich old guy. Romney is a means to their end; prostitution is a side issue at this point.

The one thing I know is the Obama I vote for is the Obama I get. I am shocked at his lack of debating skills the other night, but I am not shocked at what he said, it was true to himself. Seems to me a man’s mental health would depend on his consistence of thought and position. The shock of what Romney was saying the other night was the smoothness of his lies. Richard Nixon comes to mind. There are still people today who defend Nixon. I for one don’t.

That’s a good question, and I was thinking about formulating a lengthy, unsolicited-advice-to-Team Obama kind of response, but really, the only thing you have to do is dust off the playbook you’d socked away for running against a Jon Huntsman-headed ticket (I’m sure they ran that scenario).

You know–point out the fiscal policy differences, play up the social/civil rights issues where the GOP is on the losing side, etc.

I agree. A 12 point swing did not take place. The original baseline Pew poll massivley oversampled Democrats. The latest Pew poll looks to slightly be oversampling Republicans. So I think the swing is more likely in the 5 or 6 point range. That said, none of the polls pick up the extent of the so-called Bradley Effect which my instincts tell me could be worth up to 2 points net to Romney. Also, I think the polls tend to underestimate Republican support by another point or 2 as Republicans are often suspicious of the media and don’t answer the pollsters. A while back, I said the election was trending towards a Romney victory of 3 – 5 points. Jay basically laughed it off, but I still think that’s the case. The corrupt liberal msm will not be able to save Obama.

or more and more state/government control. This election comes down to two paths: the US Constitution, individual freedom and liberty or the corrosive hand of the state collective. Socialism. Where individuals are grouped, pigeonholed, divided and subordinated to the collective will of the state.

(CBS/AP) LONDON – Prince Harry is back in Afghanistan. The British royal – third in line for the throne behind his father Prince Charles and brother Prince William – arrived in Afghanistan Friday for his second stint on the front lines.
According to the British media, Harry will spend his four-month deployment aboard an Apache attack helicopter, one of which he inspected upon his arrival Britain’s Camp Bastion, in the Helmand province.
The British reporter tasked with covering Harry’s arrival for the U.K. media said he looked “relaxed, if slightly tired,” after his journey on a standard military flight from England.
Harry was to undergo about 10 days of acclimatization before being sent out on combat missions as a co-pilot gunner.

That old Pew guy, Andy Kohut or something, has been around for years. He was on PBS last night with some fairly convincing figures–and Pew has been consistently center-left leaning. But I still think Mitt is not ruthless enough to beat the pro.

the point was that he cynically knew that if he timed things just right, if he allowed the morale of the right wing base to sink low enough, and then waited to stage his rally at just the right time, that he would be given a blank check by the right to morph any way he likes in order to upend the race and win

So Mitt is conceding the right extreme/tea party positions will fail to get him elected. Style vs. Substance. Many people, I suppose because they are young or at least younger than my generation, do not understand why the1960s “social revolution” was as fervent and intense as it was.
Many young people thought that too many of their elders were living out preordained, expected “images” of what they should be, instead of living out who they authentically were. That falseness resulted in unhappiness personally, and within families. The young people of the 60s questioned the values of the society in terms of perceptions related to race, sexual roles, unquestioning patriotism related to war and the killings in war. (”Look Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “The Graduate,” “Coming Home” with Jane Fonda, regarding the Vietnam War) The country became divided as witnessed in the horror of the Kent State University killings by policemen of college students who were protesting those superficial values, as they saw it, within American society. The country became divided on the Civil Rights Movement where little black school girls were murdered in Alabama. The nation has remains divided today. Evolution of consciousness takes time.

In Romney, I see a man trying to live out an acceptable image without a core of depth, and in Obama I see a man who is living out who he is authentically is. Moreover, it is the policies of Romney that are important, not his style or whether he appears “stiff” of not. His policies reflect the mindset of the 1950s – an America that values “strength” through toughness in its foreign policy, where there is a definite class demarcation among people based on wealth and status, where men and women have defined roles, and where kindness comes from what one “shows” rather than who one “is.”

Obama’s policies not only lifted this nation economically from the pits of a near Depresssion, but they reflect the America that has confirmed that the social revolution of the 1960s has made America better and stronger in reality, not just in image. Obama’s values and policies also reflect belief that America has emerged the better for having been transformed by the 1960s into a nation that values authenticity, racial equality, sexual equality, leading the world through its moral authority – as George Washington had modeled for posterity – rather than through intimidation. Obama knows that real strength does not come through the projection of surface images, but of the authenticity of that internal strength that can say to his subordinates “Find Osama bin Laden bring him to justice” as his #1 foreign policy goal.

Image vs. authenticity. Style vs. Substance. Lies v. Truth.

I support Obama for many reasons and among those reasons are the ones I just described.

This is why I just chuckle when I think about what these blogs will look like a year or two into a Romney presidency should he win, and the realities of Washington have set in and Mitt has found himself unable to pretend being something he is not. I think that the Democratic excuse machine is in full operation. It would be more intellectualy honest not to blame the debate moderator (and I know you didn’t blame Lehrer, Jay) or concoct goofy stories like this. What happened in my opinion is that a lot of Americans are not happy about where the economy sits today and Romney’s performance gave us confidence that he would make it a priority and has the background to do something about it. We have doubts that Obama has the ability to take this on and the debate showed us that those doubts might be real.

You don’t get it, and neither does SHUT UP. It’s not about Romney’s family and it never was.

It’s the fact that when asked about his sons and whether or not they served in the military, he made it clear that to his family, ‘national service’ also means ‘volunteering in a political campaign.’ I’m sorry, but it’s not. There’s no way on earth that political volunteering is equivalent to actual military service — and Mitt clearly equated to two.

It just underlines how disconnected he is from average Americans (you know, the kind of people who would actually serve in the military) and how disdainful he is of rank-and-file military servicemembers and veterans.

The posters that like to paste/paste/paste ad nauseum what they feel are broken promises from ‘08 when Obama was stumping need to remember that mindset should Romney win. All politicians clamor for their base when politicking, but when governing they must be more centered because they are no longer appealing to just their voters, but representing everyone.
Am I surprised that Romney switched to center moderate? Not at all. I didn’t expect it to be a full scale switch all at once in that first debate (and apparently neither did Obama). However, in doing so, he essentially abandoned most of his core principles that he’s been accepting donations in support of. I’m not so sure how his original Base is going to justify voting for him since he’s 180′d them again (or it is 540′d, or 900′d, or 1,260′d?). Obama’s message has not wavered in 4 years. Romneys has in the past 4 days.

The cocktail circuit in Atlanta last week was telling me how skewed the polls were. It was a comment, then the yep reflection, and the continued observation of how the polls are a conspiracy. It was as factual in the mind of the speaker as death and taxes. He sounded like the car salesman in Fargo trying to explain the 300,000 dollars missing from the loan department.

Jack Welsh looked like a shop lifter caught last Friday in interviews trying to explain his tweeted comments. He practically put Watergate in the lap of the labor department, but had empty pockets when asked for facts. It just doesn’t feel like a 7.8% unemployed economy, it was too convenient to have good news now.

Is this the view of the Republican Party, everything is a lie from the other side or in the labor department our side. Is there McCarthyism in this thinking? I don’t think this way, but now that they do, it makes me wonder if the conclusion is not part of their reality. We know Fox is a homer for the right on steroids, this bias news gathering was their idea, though they, on that too, try to rub it off on us. Have to disagree on this. If GM and Chrysler had gone under, the parts suppliers would also have gone under. Ford would not have suppliers to furnish them parts for their cars and also would have gone under. Could not have made the cars.

Obviously, Mr. Romney should get a bounce from his strong (although dishonest) debate performance. However, this poll is quite flawed because it takes results right after the debate and compares them to some random point in September and then tries to recast the election picture as a whole. This election has had many events that have taken place since mid-september. Plus, who was polled was key. Thus, I do not understand why folks are focusing so much on this flawed poll. Again, more shiny objects. Is anyone really looking at these issues? Is anyone really delving into the substance. I will admit the President should be laying out a stonger defense of what he has done and should point us toward his vision of the future. However, Mr. Romney’s lack of specifics and flat out lying is the worst I have ever seen. He is a businessman trying to close the deal. This means he will say anything to get the sale. People, please look at these issues, this election is too important. Plus, it’s not just about the top of the ticket. The down ballot elections will say a lot more about where we are headed.

Other pollsters are now saying Pennsylvania is now up for grabs with Husseins lead which was double digit now within the margin of error.

The full Swing State tracking update offers Rasmussen Reader subscribers a combined view of the results from 11 key states won by President Obama in 2008 and thought to be competitive in 2012. The states collectively hold 146 Electoral College votes and include Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

In the 11 swing states, Mitt Romney earns 49% support to Obama’s 47%. One percent (1%) likes another candidate, and three percent (3%) are undecided.

In an interesting new story at Politico, the change is attributed to an intervention on Romney’s behalf by his eldest son, Tagg, and his wife, Ann, in which they demanded a more moderate approach.

And it’s what candidates do. In order to win the primary, he had to appear more ideology driven, now in the general election he has to appear more moderate.

It’s telling that republicans are less concerned about purity and more concerned about beating Obama at any cost.

But why didn’t you nominate a true moderate in the first place?

The telling action will be if Romney loses. They are going to veer that GOP tank so hard to the right that the left tracks are going to disintegrate.

I don’t get it.

In order to win the nomination, the candidate must adhere to a certain purity test. But in order to win the general election, that same candidate must now alter or even reverse an archived position opening him/herself up to accusations of flip-flopping.

If defeating Obama is the prime objective, why not just nominate a moderate in the first place?

Romney wants support the insurgents in Syria. That means borrowing money from the Chinese,which is his test. Since many of the insurgents are supported by the Saudis that funded Al Qaeda, I don’t think that makes a lot of sense.
His robust foreign policy is the New American Century revisited. It didn’t work too well on its first iteration and won’t in a repeat.
The vice president debate could be interesting in that Biden can call out the lies and incosistencies. Also Biden is the only one of the four candidates to have a son that served in the middle east. But, that will not mean much to the chicken hawks advising Romney.

Ahem: Romney was recorded saying that a “blind trust” is nothing but a front. The trustee, in this case a close associate of his, does nothing that isn’t in line with what is wanted by the investor. Read the article- it’s pretty clear Romney knew what he was investing in and that investment was sold once it threatened his campaign. Anything else?

The previous president invested his capital after winning a second term by going after social security, how did that work out? Nobobdy really asked him to do it anyway but he insisted, so every president makes promises and few are attainable…

The problem is Obama stated if he did not cut the debt in half then he would not be re elected. This is like the no new taxes pledge GHWB made. We made Bush pay for that promise just like we should make Obama pay for his.

@Micheal. Interesting you pointed that out, and I wondered how many people caught it when Romney said it in his VMI speech – “We want this century to be an AMERICAN century…”

Talk about voter fraud. There is a lot more fraud in absentee balloting.

But Republicans dont care about that because absentee ballots tend to break their way.

You may want to send that along to David Letterman, Bill Maher, and others. Making jokes about Palin’s younger daughter(12 years old I think) getting knocked up by a pro athlete falls in this category. But I don’t remember seeing your outrage on here about that.

Not even remotley similar…I think obama can be excused for not cutting the deficit in half because of a world teetering on the brink his first year in office. One could argue that he was remarkable in stabilizing the world economy but you don’t want to see that…

Difference is Republicans always put themselves up as the wholesome family values types who are pure as driven snow. For political gain.

Bristol herself signed an abstinence pledge. Something most conservatives support instead of sex ed and condoms.

Well how did that work out ?
