Romney family intervention altered campaign, polls

UPDATE: 9:07:

From The Hill:

Mitt Romney has overtaken President Obama in a Public Policy Polling survey released on Tuesday.

Romney won 49 percent support from likely voters in the poll, compared to 47 percent for Obama.

It’s the first time all year Romney has led in the poll, which was conducted on behalf of liberal Daily Kos website and the Service Employees International Union. Obama led 49-45 percent in the group’s previous poll, conducted before last week’s debate.

The PPP poll, like the Pew poll cited below, was taken in the immediate aftermath of last week’s debate.

—————————

10-8-12-1

Source: Pew Research Center

In a new nationwide Pew poll taken in the immediate wake of last week’s debate, Mitt Romney holds a four-point lead over Barack Obama. Until that’s confirmed by other polling, count me unconvinced. Yes, Obama did poorly in the debate, but there’s little to support the contention that a 12-point swing took place — Pew’s pre-debate numbers gave Obama an eight-point lead, a little on the high side — or that the debate completely erased Obama’s 18-point lead among women, as Pew reports.

There’s no question that Romney got a good bump out of the debate. The question is how large and whether it lasts. Gallup and Rasmussen provide evidence that it has begun to fade, perhaps because of the good jobs report, but time will tell.

And what inspired this apparent shift in Romney strategy and fortunes? In an interesting new story at Politico, the change is attributed to an intervention on Romney’s behalf by his eldest son, Tagg, and his wife, Ann, in which they demanded a more moderate approach.

As Politico reports:

“Even now, many Romney officials wonder whether the change can be sustained. In essence, Romney is trying to undergo a political metamorphosis — to shed an image of personal stiffness, and to emerge loose and willing to compromise. Romney, advisers concede, is at his worst when improvising — and this shift is the biggest improvisation of the campaign. Right now, Romney is described as going with the flow, trying to quickly grow into this new public persona, most notably with his decision to tell personal stories on the stump.

Campaign officials said any change will be confined by Romney’s own cautious nature. And they are candid that their electoral map still looks terrible: Romney is behind in nearly every vital state. Ohio still looks very tough to win and New Hampshire, once a possibility, looks very bleak, officials say.”

So we’ll see. Again, there’s no question the narrative arc of the campaign has been altered. As that great political strategist Yogi Berra once noted, it ain’t over ’til it’s over.

Republicans select their presidential candidate based on the eloquence with which he presents his lies. Mitt quickly recognized that his hidden camera lies lacked that eloquence. He let his guard down because he failed to account for the real possibility that someone could be secretly recording him. Mitt Gekko Romney compensated and adjusted his many faces quickly before his next public appearance–a feat in and of itself, no doubt.

Thulsa,
On your “football” comment to Fred…I will agree that Romney will probably win the white male vote…minus me, of course, but that will be all. America is not all while you know. The “minorities” will win this one for the President. That’s a good thing. In fact, if I had my way, there would be a law that you had to marry outside your race. Eventually, we would all be the same color and this race BS would finally be over. But the minority vote is why the GOP is so disparately trying to suppress their votes…they know.

Normal,

Anyway we look at it its a close race. I do believe that if Obama wins Ohio that Romney is toast. The irony of it all is that the 3 states that Romney needs- Ohio, VA, and Fla. I think are all doing better overall due to Republican governors. I will try and find it but I saw in the news about a month ago that of the 23 states that changed governorships last time around (15 went R 8 went D) that the states that went R have since seen their unemployment drop by by almost 50% more than the states that went D. Kinda interesting. It was a news clip on CNN or Cpan I think.

So in other words, Mitts “Royalty” is different than Prince Charles?

Prince Harry returns to Afghanistan

(CBS/AP) LONDON – Prince Harry is back in Afghanistan. The British royal – third in line for the throne behind his father Prince Charles and brother Prince William – arrived in Afghanistan Friday for his second stint on the front lines.
According to the British media, Harry will spend his four-month deployment aboard an Apache attack helicopter, one of which he inspected upon his arrival Britain’s Camp Bastion, in the Helmand province.
The British reporter tasked with covering Harry’s arrival for the U.K. media said he looked “relaxed, if slightly tired,” after his journey on a standard military flight from England.
Harry was to undergo about 10 days of acclimatization before being sent out on combat missions as a co-pilot gunner.

You missed the whole “etch-a-sketch” moment. What everyone misunderstood about it was that it wasn’t so much that MItt Romney was going to change his tune overnight, the point was that he cynically knew that if he timed things just right, if he allowed the morale of the right wing base to sink low enough, and then waited to stage his rally at just the right time, that he would be given a blank check by the right to morph any way he likes in order to upend the race and win. I don’t believe in polls. They are too easily manipulated by the wording of the question. very few, if any, are free of bias anymore in my opinion.

It is also my opinion that this race here is WAY too close to call. (Which means it will probably be a total blow out one way or the other lol). I am looking forward to watching the returns on election night after I turn in the returns for my precinct. I have no doubt that in my precinct, Romney wins, I am in a strongly Republican area of Dekalb. While I’ve seen a ton of Romney/Ryan signs in yards, I have yet to see an Obama sign. “Right now, Romney is described as going with the flow, trying to quickly grow into this new public persona, most notably with his decision to tell personal stories on the stump.”
================================================

Style vs. Substance. Many people, I suppose because they are young or at least younger than my generation, do not understand why the1960s “social revolution” was as fervent and intense as it was.
Many young people thought that too many of their elders were living out preordained, expected “images” of what they should be, instead of living out who they authentically were. That falseness resulted in unhappiness personally, and within families. The young people of the 60s questioned the values of the society in terms of perceptions related to race, sexual roles, unquestioning patriotism related to war and the killings in war. (”Look Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “The Graduate,” “Coming Home” with Jane Fonda, regarding the Vietnam War) The country became divided as witnessed in the horror of the Kent State University killings by policemen of college students who were protesting those superficial values, as they saw it, within American society. The country became divided on the Civil Rights Movement where little black school girls were murdered in Alabama. The nation has remains divided today. Evolution of consciousness takes time.

In Romney, I see a man trying to live out an acceptable image without a core of depth, and in Obama I see a man who is living out who he is authentically is. Moreover, it is the policies of Romney that are important, not his style or whether he appears “stiff” of not. His policies reflect the mindset of the 1950s – an America that values “strength” through toughness in its foreign policy, where there is a definite class demarcation among people based on wealth and status, where men and women have defined roles, and where kindness comes from what one “shows” rather than who one “is.”

Obama’s policies not only lifted this nation economically from the pits of a near Depresssion, but they reflect the America that has confirmed that the social revolution of the 1960s has made America better and stronger in reality, not just in image. Obama’s values and policies also reflect belief that America has emerged the better for having been transformed by the 1960s into a nation that values authenticity, racial equality, sexual equality, leading the world through its moral authority – as George Washington had modeled for posterity – rather than through intimidation. Obama knows that real strength does not come through the projection of surface images, but of the authenticity of that internal strength that can say to his subordinates “Find Osama bin Laden bring him to justice” as his #1 foreign policy goal.

Image vs. authenticity. Style vs. Substance. Lies v. Truth.

I support Obama for many reasons and among those reasons are the ones I just described.

I know the president is only responsible for gas prices if they have an (R) after their name.

Let me explain, once and for all, what made people believe Bush had responsibility for gas prices and Obama does not.

It wasn’t media bias. It wasn’t gas prices rising at a particular rate or being over a certain amount. It wasn’t the fact that one is Republican and one is Democrat.

Instead, it was the fact that both Bush AND Cheney owned previously or had stake in or connections in the oil industry. It was the fact that many on the right loudly proclaimed oil from Iraq would pay for the Iraq War, and Halliburton getting preferential no-bid treatment in the aftermath of invasion. The people, and part of the media, believed that the control did not come from the office of the President, but from the two people at the head of the executive branch controlling things on the oil front outside of the office responsibilities.

By contrast, Obama has no such connection. The right wing media repeatedly portray Obama as having absolutely zero private sector experience. They portray him as they do all Democrats: tree hugging and against oil (I work for an oil company and can tell you absolutely that, just like the gun nut crazy sh*t, Obama does NOT have it out for oil companies in a “you-must-die!” kind of way as the right portrays). Because of this, the media and the public would have a really hard time believing Obama has any control here. Spinmeisters try to make up reasons why he MUST be responsible instead, but to most people that comes off as far less plausible than a President who was once an oil baron and still has buddies in the industry.

tl;dr: Obama has no connections or influence in the oil industry. Bush and Cheney both did. Bush and Cheney having some control over gas prices is a more plausible theory than putting Obama in the exact same position in the theory.

I think that the Democratic excuse machine is in full operation. It would be more intellectualy honest not to blame the debate moderator (and I know you didn’t blame Lehrer, Jay) or concoct goofy stories like this. What happened in my opinion is that a lot of Americans are not happy about where the economy sits today and Romney’s performance gave us confidence that he would make it a priority and has the background to do something about it. We have doubts that Obama has the ability to take this on and the debate showed us that those doubts might be real.

“Severely Conservative” Mittens will have dems against him and his agenda, unabashedly Moderate Mittens will have to deal with tea tardz and “fergit hell…” types..

Little girls being attacked…. a perfect example of gender/victim warfare. Hypocrites for Obama don’t tolerate the other side pointing out that Obama never served in the military. This is about Obama and Romney so why do you leftist’s continue to throw B.S. on the wall about Romney’s family if you don’t want the same done to Obama?

No president, R or D, can control gas prices. They are driven up by a middle eastern cartel which monopolizes crude oil production and artificially sets the market price. And we, in turn, willingly pay whatever the market charges because we are addicted to petroleum. Easy to blame some faceless company like Halliburton of fret over insidious inside political connections. Unfortunately, the answer lies in the middeast. And we, both Republican and Democrat, have been willing to send our young men to fight wars that are ultimately over oil and defend crazy regimes like the Saudis because they rule the cartel.

Right. Jay believed it because of *the polls.* Plural.

But *the polls* haven’t shifted. *A* poll has. And that one poll is supposed to override all the others? Have you ever heard of something called an “outlier?”

The degree to which statistical innumeracy seems to pervade the ranks of the con faithful never ceases to amaze me.

Well, things is looking up. Soon we’ll have somebody with lots of Business experience in the White House. I always wanted my personal life to be just like my work life. You know, have somebody say, If you don’t like it don’t let the door hit you in the back side. And if I get in a jam I can have somebody say, your personal life ain’t no concern of mine. Start taking Personal Responsibility and stop making Bad Decisions. And if the air gets filthy and the water stops being fit to drink, be told, Stop breathing and drinking. We got a business to run around here, get out of the way.

Yup, it sure is going to be different when we have a Business man in the White House.

Have a good Tuesday everybody.

Romney was more energetic and antimated during the debate. But that does not say much about how he will do as President.
Our economy is recovering and the war is winding down. We are on the right track.
Romeny does not have a plan. Just a lot of noise.

Disclaimer: This guy here thinks Obama lost the debate. But I also think the liberals overreacted to him not being as “strong” and many had to be talked off a ledge.

The polls will probably settle more into a tightened race because the over-emotional liberal reaction will calm down.

You don’t get it, and neither does SHUT UP. It’s not about Romney’s family and it never was.

It’s the fact that when asked about his sons and whether or not they served in the military, he made it clear that to his family, ‘national service’ also means ‘volunteering in a political campaign.’ I’m sorry, but it’s not. There’s no way on earth that political volunteering is equivalent to actual military service — and Mitt clearly equated to two.

It just underlines how disconnected he is from average Americans (you know, the kind of people who would actually serve in the military) and how disdainful he is of rank-and-file military servicemembers and veterans.

Anyone who thinks Obama has it out for the oil industry has no f***ing clue what they’re talking about. He only didn’t approve the pipeline because the Republicans forced him on a timetable that was impossible to meet if you know how to be a good project manager. He will approve it. He also lifted the moratorium in the gulf after essentially no useful changes had been made to regulation.

I give him some credit….a Stanford prof sez he demonstrated *against* the anti-war demonstrators.
He snagged a Religious Minister deferment. He served 2 years in the jungles of France, enduring endless wine & cheese tastings.
In between, he’s credited with 2 kills (converts), probably the wine steward and the room service babe at the Mormon palace in Paris.

The posters that like to paste/paste/paste ad nauseum what they feel are broken promises from ‘08 when Obama was stumping need to remember that mindset should Romney win. All politicians clamor for their base when politicking, but when governing they must be more centered because they are no longer appealing to just their voters, but representing everyone.
Am I surprised that Romney switched to center moderate? Not at all. I didn’t expect it to be a full scale switch all at once in that first debate (and apparently neither did Obama). However, in doing so, he essentially abandoned most of his core principles that he’s been accepting donations in support of. I’m not so sure how his original Base is going to justify voting for him since he’s 180′d them again (or it is 540′d, or 900′d, or 1,260′d?). Obama’s message has not wavered in 4 years. Romneys has in the past 4 days.

Romney was like a Jack-in-the-Box who popped up and exclaimed, “I can fix that!” No matter how absurd the assertion, no matter how impossible the connect-the-dots, and no matter how sound Obama’s reply was, Romney became this ridiculously-animated musical punctuation.

The moderator was a problem. He actually argued policy with Obama, and stepped on the subtle nuances of Obama’s delivery. He may as well have been stuffing ballots.
