David Siegel and the billionaire’s sad lament

the-queen-of-versailles

The man above is David Siegel, owner of Westgate Resorts, allegedly the largest time-share company in the world, with his wife Jackie. After a financial setback during the recession, Siegel now brags that “we’re the most profitable we’ve ever been.” He and Jackie have resumed construction on a 90,000-square-foot home, called Versailles, that they are building in Florida. If and when it is completed, it will be the largest private home in the country.

According to the Wall Street Journal, when completed Versailles will boast “13 bedrooms, 23 full bathrooms, a 6,000-square-foot master suite (with plans in place for a bed on a rotating platform), a banquet kitchen plus 10 satellite kitchens, a 20-car garage, three pools, a two-story wine cellar and a grand hall with a 30-foot stained glass dome.”

With that background established, this is the email that Siegel sent to his employees yesterday:

Subject: Message from David Siegel
Date:Mon, 08 Oct 2012 13:58:05 -0400 (EDT)
From: [David Siegel]
To: [All employees]

To All My Valued Employees,

As most of you know our company, Westgate Resorts, has continued to succeed in spite of a very dismal economy. There is no question that the economy has changed for the worse and we have not seen any improvement over the past four years. In spite of all of the challenges we have faced, the good news is this: The economy doesn’t currently pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is another 4 years of the same presidential administration. Of course, as your employer, I can’t tell you whom to vote for, and I certainly wouldn’t interfere with your right to vote for whomever you choose. In fact, I encourage you to vote for whomever you think will serve your interests the best.

However, let me share a few facts that might help you decide what is in your best interest. The current administration and members of the press have perpetuated an environment that casts employers against employees. They want you to believe that we live in a class system where the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. They label us the “1%” and imply that we are somehow immune to the challenges that face our country. This could not be further from the truth. Sure, you may have heard about the big home that I’m building. I’m sure many people think that I live a privileged life. However, what you don’t see or hear is the true story behind any success that I have achieved.

I started this company over 42 years ago. At that time, I lived in a very modest home. I converted my garage into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into building a company, which by the way, would eventually employ you. We didn’t eat in fancy restaurants or take expensive vacations because every dollar I made went back into this company. I drove an old used car, and often times, I stayed home on weekends, while my friends went out drinking and partying. In fact, I was married to my business — hard work, discipline, and sacrifice. Meanwhile, many of my friends got regular jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and made a nice income, and they spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy cars and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes. My friends refinanced their mortgages and lived a life of luxury. I, however, did not. I put my time, my money, and my life into this business —-with a vision that eventually, some day, I too, will be able to afford to buy whatever I wanted. Even to this day, every dime I earn goes back into this company. Over the past four years I have had to stop building my dream house, cut back on all of my expenses, and take my kids out of private schools simply to keep this company strong and to keep you employed.

Just think about this – most of you arrive at work in the morning and leave that afternoon and the rest of your time is yours to do as you please. But not me- there is no “off” button for me. When you leave the office, you are done and you have a weekend all to yourself. I unfortunately do not have that freedom. I eat, live, and breathe this company every minute of the day, every day of the week. There is no rest. There is no weekend. There is no happy hour. I know many of you work hard and do a great job, but I’m the one who has to sign every check, pay every expense, and make sure that this company continues to succeed. Unfortunately, what most people see is the nice house and the lavish lifestyle. What the press certainly does not want you to see, is the true story of the hard work and sacrifices I’ve made.

Now, the economy is falling apart and people like me who made all the right decisions and invested in themselves are being forced to bail out all the people who didn’t. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed 42 years of my life for. Yes, business ownership has its benefits, but the price I’ve paid is steep and not without wounds. Unfortunately, the costs of running a business have gotten out of control, and let me tell you why: We are being taxed to death and the government thinks we don’t pay enough. We pay state taxes, federal taxes, property taxes, sales and use taxes, payroll taxes, workers compensation taxes and unemployment taxes. I even have to hire an entire department to manage all these taxes. The question I have is this: Who is really stimulating the economy? Is it the Government that wants to take money from those who have earned it and give it to those who have not, or is it people like me who built a company out of his garage and directly employs over 7000 people and hosts over 3 million people per year with a great vacation?

Obviously, our present government believes that taking my money is the right economic stimulus for this country. The fact is, if I deducted 50% of your paycheck you’d quit and you wouldn’t work here. I mean, why should you? Who wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, that’s what happens to me.

Here is what most people don’t understand and the press and our Government has chosen to ignore – to stimulate the economy you need to stimulate what runs the economy. Instead of raising my taxes and depositing that money into the Washington black-hole, let me spend it on growing the company, hire more employees, and generate substantial economic growth. My employees will enjoy the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and better salaries. But that is not what our current Government wants you to believe. They want you to believe that it somehow makes sense to take more from those who create wealth and give it to those who do not, and somehow our economy will improve. They don’t want you to know that the “1%”, as they like to label us, pay more than 31% of all the taxes in this country. Thomas Jefferson, the author of our great Constitution, once said, “democracy” will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”

Business is at the heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate business, not kill it. However, the power brokers in Washington believe redistributing wealth is the essential driver of the American economic engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of change they want.

So where am I going with all this? It’s quite simple. If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, as our current President plans, I will have no choice but to reduce the size of this company. Rather than grow this company I will be forced to cut back. This means fewer jobs, less benefits and certainly less opportunity for everyone.

So, when you make your decision to vote, ask yourself, which candidate understands the economics of business ownership and who doesn’t? Whose policies will endanger your job? Answer those questions and you should know who might be the one capable of protecting and saving your job. While the media wants to tell you to believe the “1 percenters” are bad, I’m telling you they are not. They create most of the jobs. If you lose your job, it won’t be at the hands of the “1%”; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country.

You see, I can no longer support a system that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be destroyed, and with it, so will your opportunities. If that happens, you can find me in the Caribbean sitting on the beach, under a palm tree, retired, and with no employees to worry about.

Signed, your boss,

David Siegel

The email does raise an interesting question or two, such as, if it’s true that “even to this day, every dime I earn goes back into this company,” where did all the money for that house come from? And if he made all the right decisions, why did he come so close to bankruptcy? Why does he blame government for the fact that he had to pull his eight kids out of private school? If he couldn’t support a family that large, why did he keep having children?

Under ordinary circumstances, I also wouldn’t think it necessary to pity poor Mr. Siegel. After all, he would seem to have more than enough pity for himself to fill all three swimming pools at Versailles, allowing him to wallow in that emotion to his heart’s content. But clearly, this is a man completely unfamiliar with the concept of “more than enough.” Judging from his email, the poor unappreciated soul wants and needs more pity still; he is a victim, you see, treated shabbily and unfairly, and he’s not going to take any more of it, by golly.

Attention, attention must finally be paid to such a person.

– Jay Bookman

getalife, so who is Joe the Plumber?

NiF? DrainTheSwamp? AJCwhateverhisfacewas?

His “I’m off to go eat my steak” style looks exceedingly familiar.

In a way though bro, I’m kinda bummed.

I loved b*tchslapping Filky. But Andy? I just don’t have the heart to torture him anymore. (He’s paid his dues to society!)

More recent evidence of the Obama campaign’s desperation is the “Big Bird” attack. Have they actually sunk to this level? Now even the producers of Sesame Street are telling Obama to lay off and not use them in his desperate attempt to use them as his campaign patsies. My God, how low can a candidate go and does the man have any pride at all? Apparently, Obama is willing to go very low since he has absolutely nothing else to run on. Then again, he could try and “Wag the Dog” and bomb Iran before the election. I wouldn’t doubt he would do this. With Obama and Axlerod, there is no threshold as to how low they are willing to go even if it means massive amounts of American taxpayer money and American lives. He is desperate and he should be. The American people are waking out of their stupor and are starting to realize what a real moron was elected in 2008.

Company stronger than it has been since 2008, now able to restart work on his “palace” Versailles. And yet, like so many others can’t bring himself to support Obama. Better than he have only 500 million and a welfare queen not get food stamps, than for him to have a billion and the welfare queen eat a steak. They believe the cheaters are all at the bottom when the truth is the bottom cheaters get chump change next to those at the top who bilk the system every day. Those really in need who get caught in his and Mitt’s notion that 47% of the country are moochers be damned.

If I were Mr. Siegel, I would hope that those magnificent hooters on my trophy wife were real and not plastic. If, indeed, Mr. Siegel started his company out of his garage, as he says, he deserves a certain respect, even from Bookman. If Bookman doesn’t like 23 bedrooms, so be it. Maybe Mr. Siegel and that blond he is married to, does. Last time I looked, it was a free country, and everyone has a right to buy whatever they please,if they can afford it. I would venture that Mr. Siegel and that specimen he calls a wife, have put those 23 bedrooms to good use. Why, in your wildest dreams, does anyone think they have a “right” to one dime of Mr. Siegel’s money? After he pays his taxes legally, it is all his. This whole thread is from outer space……. insane.

To “You Libs”.

Conservatives get this “rich envy” completely wrong. Liberals love truly rich people like Warren Buffet, Steve Jobs and Billy Gates. Why? Because they EARNED their money by creating good products or providing services that help people.

Liberals dislike rich people like this guy Siegel because a) he is mean-spirited b) ostentatious and c) his company has dubious business practices.

Few people in America dislike rich people unless the rich people are lowlifes (like birther-baiter Donald Trump)

Oh, my! Am I reliving the Russian Revolution brought on by the stimulus of Obama circling the drain?

Do I dare say that Jay Bookman has finally exposed himself and peeled back the onion layers of suppressed Marxist doctrine?

Are lower level operatives in Team Obama beginning to explode?

Stay tuned. This downward slide of the Democratic Party is like the last days of the Hitler regime. The propaganda machine run by Josef Goebbels churned out more and more incredulous misinformation to keep the people dumbed-down.

Class warfare is always a convenient fall-back position when everything else fails. Marx did it. Stalin did it. Mao did it. Ho Chi Minh did,it. Castro did it. Kim II-sung did it. Hugo Chavez did it. Evo Morales did it. Daniel Ortega did it.

We saw the complete melt down of Air America principals after the first Bush victory. We saw the news of leftists seeking professional help in dealing with the second victory of GW. I say to you exploding heads to get a hold of yourselves. Take a deep breath and smell the sweet breeze of Romney revival. Help is on the way.

That guy is such a douche bag…I work 50 hours a week just to make ends sorta meet and that moron really believes that the poor should be taxed even more? He can retire now and live in the Bahamas on the beach and hes bitching about paying a little tax…that’s a perfect example of why most people hate rich people. Not because they have money or a beautiful gold digging wife or husband that is trying to off them at every chance but because they are so cheap and stingy that they wouldn’t spare a dollar to save hundreds of people lives. I can only hope he gets what he deserves or at least breaks a hip.

I agree with every word you said kayaker, those liberal wealth enviers never know when to stop. My problem, though, is with fat people getting more food than me. I have had to go to work for forty years now while they stay at home and draw welfare so they can eat little debbies and drink Mountain Dew all day. I keep working off all my fat doing physical labor just so I can pay the taxes that allow them to get their Baconators for free.

That should’ve been me having that heart attack at the Heart Attack Cafe in Vegas.

Meanwhile, Bill Gates, that staunch liberal patriarch from Washington State, has some digs that would probably rival Mr. Siegel’s house. Appraised value of this limousine liberal’s home is pegged at 150M and change and his yearly property tax bill is close to 1M dollars. Both of them started out of their garage but Siegel is a conservative. That makes all of the difference, does it not? All of the evil rich 1%ers who pay most of the taxes in this country are to be demonized…….. but only if they are Republicans.

josef – are you using the code-word version of uppity or the Merriam-Webster version? I can and have been accused of the MW version, and rightly so. I do, in fact, take a great deal of pride in my privileged upbringing and old heritage. At the same time, I don’t believe this makes me inherently superior to other human beings. And my international travels have only entrenched me further in that belief.

And, no, the plight of the gay Ugandan is not improved. It is, however, a gorgeous country with food that will certainly remind you of soul food, uncoincidentally.

@kayaker – I am sure your response regarding the different in Mr Seigel and Mr Gates is predicated upon the likely fact you’re not aware of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is controlled by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett. It is the single largest private beneficiary in the world, and certainly an important contributor to The Global Fund, HIV and TB research, amongst other endeavors to increase the quality of life of people across the globe.

I say this with much admiration despite the fact I am in disagreement with many of the Foundation’s positions.

It is not admirable for a man with such a house to poor mouth to his employees. At the understated least it’s in poor taste.

You are dead wrong in your characterization of liberal envy of this self-congratulating one-dimensional SOB. I happen to vote liberal and I work my fool A off and have since I was 15. Over the years, I have acquired some wealth and aspired to work for more of it. I have employed as many as 20 in my organization and have always recognized them as the cornerstone of my success. Without them, I’m a one man shop and my wealth acquisition is limited accordingly. This miserable excuse for a capitalist believes that he, and he alone, has worked the hours and put in the time to become the Great David Siegel. Poppycock. It would do him right if every single one of his employees left their jobs simultaneously, and no one moved in to fill in the vacuum it created. Goodbye Mr. Siegel. Goodbye success.

Mr. Siegel owes his standing to his employees, to his country, and to his own incredible work ethic. Problem is, he only views one of those three contributors as the source of his success. That’s what pizzes me off. I don’t envy him. I despise him.

Frog, I am sure he would never hold lavish parties there and claim they are business expenses. :D

It is interesting to note that he does not claim that he needs a great tax break to “create jobs”, he just threatens that if taxed more, he just might take his ball and go home.

No Kayaker, the central point is about his using his power as an employer to politically intimidate his employees. The parts about his wealth and success merely serve to disprove the notion that Obama has been harmful to him or his business and they do so quite convincingly.

Kamchak, 7:35,

How can this non-caring right wing idiot even think about marrying someone at least 20 yrs his junior and still have the audacity to state that he wants to keep what he made and not share it with anyone? Gates has chosen go give most of his money away, just as has Bernie Marcus who founded Home Depot but these are decisions that each individual has to make for themselves. It is absolutely no one’s business what Mr. Siegel does with his money. It he wants to start a fire in one of his living rooms and burn the whole lot, it is no one’s business but his. It’s that way in a free society.

Jay wants your money. He needs you to pay for his saviors mistakes. Jay is full of the anger, hatred and envy that fills so much of the left. The fact that you have dared to publicly call out the Chosen One will makes you in his twisted mind a legitimate target of hatred and scorn.
Jay, like his Savior, has no idea of where jobs come from. Poor man thought that Obama’s policies would bring us utopia instead of unending jobless misery. Envy, hatred and greed are hardly virtues but seem to be all the left has to offer.

Strawman. I made none of those assertions.

Gates has chosen go give most of his money away, just as has Bernie Marcus who founded Home Depot but these are decisions that each individual has to make for themselves.

More strawmen, I made no point about Messrs Marcus and gates.

It is absolutely no one’s business what Mr. Siegel does with his money. It he wants to start a fire in one of his living rooms and burn the whole lot, it is no one’s business but his. It’s that way in a free society.

Fortunate to have a good job with a firm who values their employees and their desire for balance in their life. Wouldn’t trade palce with this asshat for one of the 23 bedrooms.

Don’t Forget, 7:42,

You ignore the fact that most of the SEIU has intimidated, cajoled and involuntarily taken contributions from union employees to vote for their candidate. I don’t criticize them for it. I think that it is wrong, but under the present laws, they have every right to express themselves to any of their employees that they please. Please save us the diatribe about how employers and unions manage their employees to do exactly as they wish. They are just not Republicans.

Jm is correct, I would not classify Mr Gates as a liberal. However, his father certainly is.

And, to point, Jay’s point is this man, who is engaging in excess conspicuous consumption, which is his right no matter how tasteless, is issuing a thinly veiled threat to his subordinates.

He’s morally bankrupt for doing so, not to mention potentially illegal. And he’s gone beyond distasteful into full-blown disgusting for his narcissism.

You are just another Republican who is immune to said facts, truths and realities.

Or don’t.

Either way, it is great comedy reading your stuff…

For the non-batsh*t crazies here, a quote from the arch-conservative (LOL!).
