To date, Mitt Romney’s critique of the Obama foreign policy has been a case study of bluster over content, without specifics, although the presence of men such as John Bolton, the shoot-first former U.N. ambassador, as influential members of his foreign policy team ought to give Americans serious pause.
In fact, if we are to judge him from the tone of his rhetoric and by those whose counsel he seeks — and that’s about all he has given us to go on — Romney proposes to pick up where Dick Cheney left off in 2004, when a chastened President Bush belatedly took back control of foreign policy from his over-adventurous vice president.
I note that in his speech today at the Virginia Military Institute (text available here), Romney blamed the Obama administration for differences of opinion that have erupted between the United States and Israel.
“The world must never see any daylight between our two nations,” Romney said.
However, I do not believe it is our responsibility alone to ensure that such daylight never occurs. Israeli leaders bear at least equal responsibility for keeping that important relationship on an even keel. We are certainly under no obligation to outsource our foreign policy in that region to Benjamin Netanyahu, as Romney seems to advocate.
(In fact, if forced to synthesize the Romney Doctrine to one sentence, I might offer this: The rest of the world will be required to abide by our wishes; we will be required to abide by Israel’s).
Romney also spoke, as he has in the past, of a foreign policy based on confidence, clarity and resolve. These are good and necessary things. Unfortunately, the man’s credibility in preaching these virtues is more than a little suspect. You may recall that earlier this year, as an uprising in Libya gained strength, Romney first supported U.S. intervention and then opposed intervention and then embraced it again once it had succeeded. At one point, he even fled reporters in Las Vegas rather than be forced to take a position on the crisis.
Likewise, he harshly criticized the goal of removing Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddhafi from power, then turned around celebrated once that goal was achieved.
That is not a policy based on resolve. Likewise, Romney’s outrageous claim that President Obama sympathized with those who attacked and killed our ambassador to Libya and three others — a statement issued on the very night of their deaths — communicated not mature confidence but hasty, amateurish desperation and an eagerness to inject partisan politics in foreign-policy decisions.
I am most curious about his policy toward Afghanistan. Here’s what Romney had to say:
“… in Afghanistan, I will pursue a real and successful transition to Afghan security forces by the end of 2014. President Obama would have you believe that anyone who disagrees with his decisions in Afghanistan is arguing for endless war. But the route to more war — and to potential attacks here at home — is a politically timed retreat that abandons the Afghan people to the same extremists who ravaged their country and used it to launch the attacks of 9/11. I will evaluate conditions on the ground and weigh the best advice of our military commanders. And I will affirm that my duty is not to my political prospects, but to the security of the nation.”
Now, I would suggest that those are odd words from a man who just preached the necessity of clarity in foreign policy. Take a look again — do those words tell us anything about Romney’s approach to Afghanistan, or how it might differ in concrete terms from that undertaken by Obama?
Finally, Romney not only suggested that he would oppose any cuts in defense spending, he advocated what would appear to be a new military buildup. That is consistent with his pledge to commit a minimum of 4 percent of GDP to defense spending. By 2014, that would mean a $200-billion-a-year increase in spending over currently projected levels.
Given our financial situation, a 33 percent increase in projected defense spending at a time when we already spend more than the next 10 biggest military powers combined would not seem to be a wise investment. And again — although Romney continues to be painfully averse to specifics — in general the GOP candidate would seem pretty eager to put that larger military to regular use overseas.

“Absolutely not! as the father of an U.S. Army Infantry man, I would much rather BIG bomb the hell out of our enemies and keep our boys at home.”
Well, if you’d just said that to start with…
So, short of the big bomb, what do you see as a successful military strategy going forward? Do we keep up the current round of ground troop wars in all the ME hotspots, or do we find a more focused, strategic response using the technology and precision we have available? Seems to me we accomplish a lot more and look more like a strong military power when we use that versus the embarrassment too often caused of late by large scale ground wars.

Unquestionably Our Beloved Messiah’s Cairo speech in 2009 was the greatest and most significant speech since The Sermon on the Mount. It established peace for all time in the Middle East, East East, and West East. The fact that Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druids, Buddhists, Aztecs, and even atheists are working together to make a better world is more than enough reason to give this remarkable leader another 4 years as our god on earth. My dad was on an Infantry Landing Shop in the South Pacific in WWII. Can see his ship in the background in MacArthur’s coming ashore in the Philippines.
It’s been only the past few years he’s opened up about those times – not just events on his ship and others in the midst of kamikaze attacks, but also picking up the troops on some of those islands when they’d been fighting for a week or a month.
I can really see why he didn’t talk about it for years.
BTW – he was the acting chief of the ship – was in charge of the engine room – at 19 years old. The captain they called ‘the old man.’ He was mid-twenties.

Seems the old saying “righty tighty, lefty loosey” no longer hold true (at least in politics). The left with its incompetent and lazy candidate Obama have gotten so tight you couldn’t drive a straight pin up their butts with a sledgehammer. As is proven here (and every where else in the leftist media) on a daily basis, the more vitriolic and hostile the hosts such as Jay and Luckovich and their dens of suckling liberal puppies become, the more it becomes evident that the democrats are sweating bigtime. They should be. At this point is going to change their level of enthusiasm about this campaign and they are not going to change their minds on who to vote for. And that should be keeping you Dims up at night. What is really funny is that you Dims have “out liberaled” yourselves. You have made your entitlement base so lazy by giving them everything they need (courtesy of the working taxpayers) without having to do anything they aren’t even going to bother to vote this time. Watch and see what the numbers look like next month.

It varies state by state. There are only 3 states that automatically reinstitutes voting rights upon completion of the sentence, if I remember correctly. Most of the states require some legal hoops to jump through upon completion of the sentence and probation before rights can be restored.
I can’t understand why it isn’t automatic across the board. Regardless to whether you view prison as a punishment or rehab stint, once the sentence is done, that debt has been paid to society. You can’t expect someone to become a productive member of society when you purposefully limit their rights to becoming productive.

Skipper, I’ve been a leftie for a long time, and even I know that military action of some type happens often. One could argue that since 1950 or so we’ve been involved in too many conflicts not directly related to us, but one could also argue that we became the guardian of democracy in much of the world for a long time post-WWII. Considering the volatile state of the Middle East, especially since the Arab Spring, I think it’s a fair assumption we’ll see a good number of situations that could need a military response from the USA. Iraq and Afghanistan aside, we have reasons to be ready to respond to a threat. How we do that is the question for me, and I think the massive ground forces ideology hasn’t worked well since WWII. We can, and we’ve proved it, go after specific individuals successfully on a very small scale. But, we have to accept that those situations will exist, regardless of political affiliation. I’m all against the gluttony of the defense contractors who make way too much profit off of the ground force wars and I believe we can reign in defense spending and remain just as strong, if not stronger in the eyes of the world. But that will take a strategic shift in the military mindset in the Pentagon and WH. What we’ve become is a world leader, and that comes with some responsibility to respond…tactfully and only forcefully when absolutely no other option exists.

#1: 1.**************.
2.With the help of the Board, find a way to give the County employees some type of increase in their pay, raise and/or COLA.
3.Explore all options to provide the employees with a better health care plan.
#2: 1.Economic Development with Job Creation including small business growth, opportunities and resources.

I would achieve these priorities through Public Private Partnerships to increase Henry County’s Commercial Tax Digest being inclusive of various industries both domestic and international along with small business growth and expansion. Effective communications, leadership skills and government transparency pertaining to all aspects of how Henry County does business will be open to every citizen.
I purposefully left off one answer in each that would probably make it easy to determine which is which.

The Republican party is the party of the religious zealots in this nation. In the name of “religious freedom” the zealots of the majority Christian religion have been seeking to have its dogma enacted into law, even though doing so is seriously detrimental to our freedom and, therefore, determental to nothing less than the very founding purpose of our nation.
The moneyed investor employer class, which is the actual ownership of the GOP brand, have made the proverbial “deal with the devil” in pursuit of votes: Betting their future power that religious zealotry is within all other demographics, they have abandoned any pretense of libertarian social policy in favor of a policy of pseudo-theocracy to curry favor and gain votes — to get the one-issue “values voters” to go to the polls in a religious stupor and vote Republican, usually contrary to their own economic best interest.
Republicans aggressively seek to deny women individual liberty with regard to their personal medical and reproductive choices.
Republicans aggressively seek to deny equal right under law to any person that chooses a lifestyle of which they disapprove.
Republicans aggressively seek to divert funds from public schools into private religious schools via voucher programs, seek to teach children religion at taxpayer expense to reinforce the brainwashing of children with religion and to indoctrinate future generations of the “follower class” to be “meek” and passive as the wealthy thrive under Republican* rule, while the employee class live lives of sharecroppers and indentured servants — awaiting their reward in some hereafter. (* “How the GOP Became the Party of the Rich”, Rolling Stone, NOV 2011)
Putting religion back in schools will result in teaching children, as Georgia’s member of the US Congress Paul Brown has “learned” and recently public announced, that the earth is, supposedly, only thousands of years old rather than millions of years old along with other myths.
With religion in our schools, there is the risk that our children will taught that women are somehow less equal to men and less able to make their own decisions — that they should be subserviant helpmates to men, as most religions teach.
Religion will also be a disaster for science and, therefore, our nation’s ability to compete in the global marketplace in the future, a serious threat to our future economic well being.
Republican religious zealots in control of the Administrative branch of our government also puts them in control of our military. This is also, potentially, a disaster for foreign policy as it will polarize powerful Islamic extremists against powerful Christian extremists (and vice versa) at a time when mid-east tension has already given rise to speculation among the zealots that we are at the beginning of their anticipated “end times” — when the zealots of each flavor actually believe all others not sharing their beliefs will be vanquished.
The right-wing religious zealots of every flavor, whether consciously / deliberately or not, seem to be pursuing their self-fulfilling prophecy of Armageddon with the expectation that their “god” will arrive to destroy all the “nonbelievers” — all people that do not believe as they believe.
We do NOT need more neo-con wars in the mideast to win “hearts and minds” of zealots. Zealots cannot, by force, alter the beliefs of other zealots. Afganistan and Iraq are proof it is costly folly to try. “Just” wars are to defend the nation by killing the enemy or enough of them to prompt surrender and/or end of hostility. Wars based on lies and/or fearmongering and wars of the Republican neo-con self-rightous “Bush” ilk — wars attempting to “liberate” others from their own chosen primitive mindset and “nationbuilding” — have proven to be and would again be costly failures. (The current Republican candidate for president has those same neocon advisors.)
Religion “informing” — guiding — foreign policy is costly and dangerous.
As domestic policy, Religion is the current Republican flavor for social, medical, science and domestic social policy and it represents nothing less than tyranny for those of the female half of the population who believe in individual liberty and equal right under law.
If the Republican party will not accept science but insists children should be taught the ancient myths of religion in education, if they will not accept that women have the right of individual liberty — will not yield to women the right to exercise their own “free will” HERE, in our own homeland — because of religious zealotry; and if Republicans will not accept that then in a nation where freedom actually exists each person must be able to make their own most personal decisions about their own lifestyles without being penalized by denying them equal right under law, then how can we NOT expect them to guide foreign policy in accord with their religious zealotry and, therefore, in active pursuit of that “self-fulfilling prophecy of Armageddon” — in pursuit of the “second coming” in which they so wholeheartedly believe?

And the Obama Whitehouse congratulates Chavez on his victory. Why shouldn’t they? Obama would like America to be just like Venezuela and Cuba as long as he and Michelle can live in their mansions and live like kings. Obama would never be able live under the socialist policies he is so enamoured of and he won’t have to because he is rich. What he loves about socialism is the power that is to gained by his and the government’s ability to mandate how the the poor and the middle class are going to live. He loves the power. He and Michelle can eat filet mignon with truffles as often as they want while telling the rest of us we should be willing to “cut down”. That is the way with tin-pot ideoligical leaders and that is exactly what Obama is. No substance.

Ah, I predicted at 2:28 you or your other sock puppet persona would attack my mom. I see you have this thing about attacking women. But alas, she’s been dead now for 25 years now son. It was only a matter of time before you went there.
See, you don’t read much and the more you drink the less coherent you become lol. It’s blatantly obvious.
Come on now, “call me out.” Talk trash about my dad. You are so predictable.
Time to go fire up the green egg, the girls will be home soon. Sorry, you can’t beat these women, I know you want to, but you can’t. You’ll have to stick with the ones in your trailer park.

The nice thing about the first debate was that for the first time in his presidency, Obama couldn’t run nor hide from an appraisal of his first term, from Romney.
And Romney treated him like an employee who had failed, and failed dramatically.
Obama knew that all could see him, in his moment of shame.
No matter how he tries to spin it, we all saw what happened when he had to stand alone and account for his time as manager of the executive branch.
He was publicly shamed, and there was nothing he could do but stand there, eyes down, and take it.

pogo, do you have any clue at all?
Do you really think that Obama would be caught dead congratulating Chavez without this piddling little expression of “differences” with Chavez they put out?
Obama wants nothing to do with Chavez because he, like the entire US ruling establishment, has nothing but contempt for him. Believe me, the people in the Obama team welcomed the news of the Chavez victory like news of a death. They needed it like a hole in their head.
You might want to try crawling out of your little FOX News dirt hole sometime. The world’s actually a little bit more surprising a place than you seem to think.

From what I’m reading there’s not a whole lot of daylight between Romney’s approach to Afghanistan and Obama’s.
‘We’re Not Going Anyplace’
Obama says that while the U.S. combat mission will end in December 2014, not all American troops will be coming home. The president signed a 10-year strategic partnership agreement with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in May, which says the U.S. will help target al-Qaida and train Afghan troops.
In his speech in Afghanistan in May, Obama described that agreement.
“We’ll work with the Afghans to determine what support they need to accomplish two narrow security missions beyond 2014: counterterrorism and continued training,” he said.
Right after the agreement was signed, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said, “The most important point is that we’re not going anyplace.”
“We have an enduring presence that will be in Afghanistan. We’ll continue to work with them on counterterrorism,” Panetta said. “We’ll continue to provide training assistance and guidance, we’ll continue to provide support.”
Romney advisers say the governor also wants an “enduring presence” in Afghanistan, but he hasn’t been as specific about what that presence will look like. Military commanders, for their part, are considering 10,000 or more troops.

Look — “Not a good weapon to have jam on you (and your platoon) either.”
During one field exercise I was on in the Army, my team was attached to a mortar platoon that was conducting a live-fire. The mortarmen didn’t want the stoopid signal guys (us) handling their weapons or ammo, so we just crouched or knelt down in the tall grass and watched them hang round after round onto their target. Most of us signalmen had never seen a mortar fired up close before, so we just kept quiet and watched.
We didn’t know it, but apparently if a mortar round doesn’t fire when dropped, there’s a trigger mechanism or something on the weapon that can be employed to kick the round out and downrange. So the mortarmen decided to pull a fast one on us Signal guys. They dropped one round in the tube and instead of the hollow THOOP noise of the round being fired, there was a loud, metallic CLANK, immediately followed by about three or four mortarmen saying OHS**T.
You never saw three signalmen run faster or heard a mortar team laugh more loudly. Then they pulled the trigger mechanism and fired the round downrange.
