Romney outlines “tough” foreign policy approach
To date, Mitt Romney’s critique of the Obama foreign policy has been a case study of bluster over content, without specifics, although the presence of men such as John Bolton, the shoot-first former U.N. ambassador, as influential members of his foreign policy team ought to give Americans serious pause.
In fact, if we are to judge him from the tone of his rhetoric and by those whose counsel he seeks — and that’s about all he has given us to go on — Romney proposes to pick up where Dick Cheney left off in 2004, when a chastened President Bush belatedly took back control of foreign policy from his over-adventurous vice president.
I note that in his speech today at the Virginia Military Institute (text available here), Romney blamed the Obama administration for differences of opinion that have erupted between the United States and Israel.
“The world must never see any daylight between our two nations,” Romney said.
However, I do not believe it is our responsibility alone to ensure that such daylight never occurs. Israeli leaders bear at least equal responsibility for keeping that important relationship on an even keel. We are certainly under no obligation to outsource our foreign policy in that region to Benjamin Netanyahu, as Romney seems to advocate.
(In fact, if forced to synthesize the Romney Doctrine to one sentence, I might offer this: The rest of the world will be required to abide by our wishes; we will be required to abide by Israel’s).
Romney also spoke, as he has in the past, of a foreign policy based on confidence, clarity and resolve. These are good and necessary things. Unfortunately, the man’s credibility in preaching these virtues is more than a little suspect. You may recall that earlier this year, as an uprising in Libya gained strength, Romney first supported U.S. intervention and then opposed intervention and then embraced it again once it had succeeded. At one point, he even fled reporters in Las Vegas rather than be forced to take a position on the crisis.
Likewise, he harshly criticized the goal of removing Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddhafi from power, then turned around celebrated once that goal was achieved.
That is not a policy based on resolve. Likewise, Romney’s outrageous claim that President Obama sympathized with those who attacked and killed our ambassador to Libya and three others — a statement issued on the very night of their deaths — communicated not mature confidence but hasty, amateurish desperation and an eagerness to inject partisan politics in foreign-policy decisions.
I am most curious about his policy toward Afghanistan. Here’s what Romney had to say:
“… in Afghanistan, I will pursue a real and successful transition to Afghan security forces by the end of 2014. President Obama would have you believe that anyone who disagrees with his decisions in Afghanistan is arguing for endless war. But the route to more war — and to potential attacks here at home — is a politically timed retreat that abandons the Afghan people to the same extremists who ravaged their country and used it to launch the attacks of 9/11. I will evaluate conditions on the ground and weigh the best advice of our military commanders. And I will affirm that my duty is not to my political prospects, but to the security of the nation.”
Now, I would suggest that those are odd words from a man who just preached the necessity of clarity in foreign policy. Take a look again — do those words tell us anything about Romney’s approach to Afghanistan, or how it might differ in concrete terms from that undertaken by Obama?
Finally, Romney not only suggested that he would oppose any cuts in defense spending, he advocated what would appear to be a new military buildup. That is consistent with his pledge to commit a minimum of 4 percent of GDP to defense spending. By 2014, that would mean a $200-billion-a-year increase in spending over currently projected levels.
Given our financial situation, a 33 percent increase in projected defense spending at a time when we already spend more than the next 10 biggest military powers combined would not seem to be a wise investment. And again — although Romney continues to be painfully averse to specifics — in general the GOP candidate would seem pretty eager to put that larger military to regular use overseas.

The Weather Channel is reporting a shift in the jet stream today.The winds blows from west to east in jet streams but the flow often shifts to the north and south. Jet streams follow the boundaries between hot and cold air and are most pronounced in winter, but do show up in early Oct, Nov. In its report it also mentions that republican hopeful Mitt Romney’s campaign is aware of the jet stream and the hot air that occurs with it throughout the U.S. and it’s shifting its thinking from last weeks conservative pattern to this weeks new fall, moderate patttern, depending of course on how the wind blows.

Read the article and the numbers again Jay. The debate was last Wednesday night and today is Monday (4 days of polling). The poll you referenced was the Gallop daily tracking poll that encompasses the past 7 days (three days of pre debate included).
Look at the history of the Daily tracking poll and you will not find any bounce for Romney because it will not show until the daily tracking poll is released on Thursday.

As far as Afghanistan if history has shown us anything is that a lot of foot soldiers on the ground is not he way to go in that Country.
Only have my limited service to call upon but maybe more special ops and intel teams instead of fresh faced 18 year olds.
Certainly not double down with a surge approach.
But again I was just a weekend warrior and played a soldier for a month each year, to hear my friends at the time describe it.
Absolutely no combat experience though.

We thought Obama would send in 5,000 troops because that’s what he said. But in reality troop count in Afghanistan increased from 37,000 to a high of 100,000 while he was CinC.

And I don’t think that’s the source for the criticism at all. Romney’s being criticized for *saying* some stoopid things, not for not serving. The lack of service *aggravates* the matter, to be sure, but he and he sons lacked service before Romney said the stoopid stuff and we weren’t criticizing them then.
IMO, people who didn’t serve yet who try to talk tough are not good bets to be CINC. I think that people like that are more likely to make an unnecessary show of force and get us into military situations that were otherwise avoidable.
And IMO people who trivialize military service by equating it to political volunteerism are people who don’t have a proper appreciation of our military and the people who serve in it.
If someone doesn’t want to serve, fine. But I’m troubled by people who didn’t serve, yet who are in (or potentially in) leadership positions in our country and who could make life-or-death decisions for our troops AND who shoot their mouths off. That’s not ’speaking softly and carrying a big stick.’

Hey USMC: Look at the bright side. Florida is the only ranked team we have left to lose to in the regular season. We can beat the rest of the weak sisters and then get our asses kicked in the motor City Music Bowl by some Division 3 school and “have a 10 win season.”

Not really no. I don’t believe in playing the “blame game” usually. I thought that after Vietnam, no American president would ever be foolish enough to get us in a prolonged war, thousands of miles from home. Bush committed America to these fights and its difficult to disengage apparently. We do what we always do and at some point will declare victory and go home. My heart just breaks for the waste of it all.

I should have pointed out because of his stance on forgetting policy. Was thinking it just didn’t type it.
Thought it would be an understood. But i forgot we have some sticklers for detail around here.
Hence the chickenhawk post followed by something about his sons not being in the military.
To me this is another issue that is a draw to me because I cannot fully support either candidates approach.
I am happy with some of the results of Obama’s policy but also disturbed by some of the side effects as well.
Romney sounds like any outsider looking in, which means he can only speak about things based upon store front.
Seems they all change after that first classified meeting.

@Get Real: therein lies my problem with defense spending. Noone, evdiently not even the WH has any idea what reasonable spending is. As citizens, we rode the wave of “get ‘em back” ideology for a decade and supported HUGE expenditures on two wars, one of which has no end and no substantive victory in sight… EVER. There has to be a way to determine that reasonable level of spending. God knows we’ve spent enough time and resources analyzing and splitting hairs on every social program. I’d love to see the same scrutiny of military spending.

To be fair, I see this as two separate things. One, Romney’s lack of service, compounded by his tough talk.
Two, Romney likening his sons’ political volunteer work to military service. That just irritates the living daylights out of me.
I don’t particularly see the Romney boys’ lack of military service as reflecting on their dad, but I do think that his dumbazz comment is indicative of a degree of cluelessness about the military on his part.

Joe: And don’t forget about the time spent tracting- riding around dressed like that on the bicycles…OIY the abuse those guys take for that! No matter how Romney tries, he just doesn’t have the experience in real life, military or not, to relate to anyone genuinely who’s actually part of the infamous “47%”. His only genuine understanding is of those of similar lifestyles, and being a foot soldier in the American military doesn’t get you into Mittens’ financial bracket.

What I said was that the military situation changed and more troops were needed. I then gave you an example of another time a military situation changed and more troops were needed. To conclude that a changed response to a changed situation is a lie has only to possible reasons. One the person is stupid or two the person is lying. I gave you the benefit of the doubt about not being stupid. Was I wrong?
