To date, Mitt Romney’s critique of the Obama foreign policy has been a case study of bluster over content, without specifics, although the presence of men such as John Bolton, the shoot-first former U.N. ambassador, as influential members of his foreign policy team ought to give Americans serious pause.
In fact, if we are to judge him from the tone of his rhetoric and by those whose counsel he seeks — and that’s about all he has given us to go on — Romney proposes to pick up where Dick Cheney left off in 2004, when a chastened President Bush belatedly took back control of foreign policy from his over-adventurous vice president.
I note that in his speech today at the Virginia Military Institute (text available here), Romney blamed the Obama administration for differences of opinion that have erupted between the United States and Israel.
“The world must never see any daylight between our two nations,” Romney said.
However, I do not believe it is our responsibility alone to ensure that such daylight never occurs. Israeli leaders bear at least equal responsibility for keeping that important relationship on an even keel. We are certainly under no obligation to outsource our foreign policy in that region to Benjamin Netanyahu, as Romney seems to advocate.
(In fact, if forced to synthesize the Romney Doctrine to one sentence, I might offer this: The rest of the world will be required to abide by our wishes; we will be required to abide by Israel’s).
Romney also spoke, as he has in the past, of a foreign policy based on confidence, clarity and resolve. These are good and necessary things. Unfortunately, the man’s credibility in preaching these virtues is more than a little suspect. You may recall that earlier this year, as an uprising in Libya gained strength, Romney first supported U.S. intervention and then opposed intervention and then embraced it again once it had succeeded. At one point, he even fled reporters in Las Vegas rather than be forced to take a position on the crisis.
Likewise, he harshly criticized the goal of removing Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddhafi from power, then turned around celebrated once that goal was achieved.
That is not a policy based on resolve. Likewise, Romney’s outrageous claim that President Obama sympathized with those who attacked and killed our ambassador to Libya and three others — a statement issued on the very night of their deaths — communicated not mature confidence but hasty, amateurish desperation and an eagerness to inject partisan politics in foreign-policy decisions.
I am most curious about his policy toward Afghanistan. Here’s what Romney had to say:
“… in Afghanistan, I will pursue a real and successful transition to Afghan security forces by the end of 2014. President Obama would have you believe that anyone who disagrees with his decisions in Afghanistan is arguing for endless war. But the route to more war — and to potential attacks here at home — is a politically timed retreat that abandons the Afghan people to the same extremists who ravaged their country and used it to launch the attacks of 9/11. I will evaluate conditions on the ground and weigh the best advice of our military commanders. And I will affirm that my duty is not to my political prospects, but to the security of the nation.”
Now, I would suggest that those are odd words from a man who just preached the necessity of clarity in foreign policy. Take a look again — do those words tell us anything about Romney’s approach to Afghanistan, or how it might differ in concrete terms from that undertaken by Obama?
Finally, Romney not only suggested that he would oppose any cuts in defense spending, he advocated what would appear to be a new military buildup. That is consistent with his pledge to commit a minimum of 4 percent of GDP to defense spending. By 2014, that would mean a $200-billion-a-year increase in spending over currently projected levels.
Given our financial situation, a 33 percent increase in projected defense spending at a time when we already spend more than the next 10 biggest military powers combined would not seem to be a wise investment. And again — although Romney continues to be painfully averse to specifics — in general the GOP candidate would seem pretty eager to put that larger military to regular use overseas.

Interesting to note re; Romney and his progeny’s miiltary participation:
Joe Kennedy Sr, among the 20 richest Americans at the time, lost 2 children during the war and his two oldest sons served in front line positions (Bomber pilot and PT Boat skipper).
Ole Joe may have been an asshat on many levels and his fortune of a somewhat questionable source, but when it came to war, his kids sure knew how to put up.

He’s a nutbasket for sure, but I don’t think he’s going to do much more than bark a lot and they’ll get tired of it. The result might be worse than what we have now, and that’s what worries me. What they’d do in the interim could create a real mess. That’s why I don’t like hearing either Israel or anyone here talk about attacking Iran right now. That would make Afghanistan look like nothing, in my opinion.

M. Huggins — “Why are Bush and Romney chickenhawks but Obama is not?”
FWIW, I don’t believe Mr. Bush was a chickenhawk, but had a lot of staffers and advisors who were.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chickenhawk_(politics)
Chickenhawk (also chicken hawk and chicken-hawk) is a political term used in the United States to describe a person who strongly supports war or other military action (i.e., a War Hawk), yet who actively avoided military service when of age.
The term indicates that the person in question is hypocritical for personally dodging a draft or otherwise shirking their duty to their country during a time of armed conflict while advocating that others do so. Generally, the implication is that chickenhawks lack the moral character to ask others to support, fight and perhaps die in an armed conflict. Those who avoid military service and continue to oppose armed aggression are not chickenhawks.

There is a possibility that Romney will get us in another war for two reasons:
1. Another war will keep the money flowing to the Military-Industrial-Complex and ensure a continuation of generous campaign contributions from them to the Republicans.
2. Another war might give Romney a chance to carry out some strange Mormon prophicies. After all, it’s been strongly rumored that G.W. Bush was carrying out Bible prophicies when he started the Iraq war.

His best friend and roommate Gino was shot in the throat this past June and killed by a sniper. Gino was buried at Arlington cemetery and my son went to the funeral. Gino, my son and many of their fellow Marines joined almost 100% because of what happened on 911. In two weeks time my son returns to Afghanistan this time as a “grizzled” 22 year old Sargent. He leads a squad of Marines he himself trained. He tells me they are “ready” to fight. All I ask is before troops are committed to combat that it be absolutely necessary. Are you asking me my opinion? If so, then yes, he certainly could have volunteered. Yet it seems to me that service alone isn’t the sole deciding factor in chickenhawkism — there also is an apparent desire or intention on chickenhawks’ part to start wars and conflicts. I’m not seeing that with President Obama.
“Especially since much of the criticism I have seen here today is about Romney’s sons. There is not a draft now.”

Since naive secular progressives and Librul Jay do not support the common sense Romney Doctrine, then they are all anti-Semites, pure and simple. “What? You’re crazy, Bill!” you fools are thinking. I say, yes, I am crazy. I’m crazy for the United States’ support of the Jewish state, the only democracy in the region. When anyone speaks out against the good policies that strengthen and protect Israel, then “he” is an anti-Semite, pure and simple. There is no room for argument here. You are either with Israel’s policies of staring down jihadists or you are not. No argument.
The United States NEEDS TO recapture its firm standing int he region that was well-known through the rightful Bush Doctrine. Since January 2009, King Hussein Obama has purposely soiled the sacred documents that comprises the rightful Bush Doctrine. It is well-known that this once-free nation is a joke in the Middle East. We need to get back to the strong policies contained in the Bush Doctrine which is now properly titled, The Romney Doctrine–which adheres to the strict constructs of The Constitution which clearly states that we have the right to protect our interests throughout the world. It is well known that the Hebrews are surrounded by jihadists who wish to push the only democracy into the sea. We need to stand with P.M. Binyomin Netanhayu to train American and Israeli Hebrews to fight the jihadism wherever it may exist.

You think Malia will be signing up in 2016?
It’s great that she has that ability if that is the course she choses. But lets be clear, there are many ways to serve this country. As we have seen, ambassadors and others may be killed in the line of duty. And of course, the military cannot function without the things built by all of us: roads, housing, equipment.

I didn’t miss the link. Already knew about it too.
I saw it as a stupid statement, but one by a parent defending their sons or making excuses for them.
I know I have said stupid things doing the same for my boys.
Obama has not vocally championed war. But his actions have.
How many sons and daughters have died in Afghanistan under his watch?

Ooops it looks like Obama is lying now:
“Last night, the Obama campaign blasted out another email claiming that Mitt Romney’s tax plan would either require raising taxes on the middle class or blowing a hole in the deficit. “Even the studies that Romney has cited to claim his plan adds up still show he would need to raise middle-class taxes,” said the Obama campaign press release. “In fact, Harvard economist Martin Feldstein and Princeton economist Harvey Rosen both concede that paying for Romney’s tax cuts would require large tax increases on families making between $100,000 and $200,000.”
But that’s not true. Princeton professor Harvey Rosen tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD in an email that the Obama campaign is misrepresenting his paper on Romney’s tax plan:
I can’t tell exactly how the Obama campaign reached that characterization of my work. It might be that they assume that Governor Romney wants to keep the taxes from the Affordable Care Act in place, despite the fact that the Governor has called for its complete repeal. The main conclusion of my study is that under plausible assumptions, a proposal along the lines suggested by Governor Romney can both be revenue neutral and keep the net tax burden on taxpayers with incomes above $200,000 about the same. That is, an increase in the tax burden on lower and middle income individuals is not required in order to make the overall plan revenue neutral.
You can check the math that shows Romney’s plan is mathematically possible here.”

“Since naive secular progressives and Librul Jay do not support the common sense Romney Doctrine, then they are all anti-Semites, pure and simple.”
Well that might explain why the pastor looks at me funny on Sundays. Who knew you had to be a right-wing nutjob if you were Christian? Better tell the Methodists about that- they encourage a little more thinking in their midst.

Nobody is attacking her.
She will be 18 in 2016.
Many here have criticized Romney and his sons because they didn’t join.
Maybe you feel it is an attack to ask if someone is going to join the military in 4 years.
If so I was attacked a lot during my teen years.

Calling you on your lies is ‘hostility?” Really? I don’t see it that way, but then I’m not a serial liar………

M. Huggins — “I didn’t miss the link. Already knew about it too. I saw it as a stupid statement, but one by a parent defending their sons or making excuses for them. I know I have said stupid things doing the same for my boys.”
IMO, it’s not just stupid. I think that it trivializes military service by equating it with political volunteerism and personal self-aggrandizement. I think it further highlights and underlines the disconnect between Romney and average Americans.
Frankly, I’m glad he said it. It just foreshadowed the sorts of things that would eventually come out about him in the current election cycle.
“Obama has not vocally championed war. But his actions have.”
How so? What makes you think that?
“How many sons and daughters have died in Afghanistan under his watch?”
I’m sure you’re aware that he didn’t *start* the conflict in Afghanistan, and that he’s wound down our involvement in Iraq, as well as tried to disengage in Afghanistan — for which he’s been roundly criticized by Republicans.
What, exactly, would you have him do with respect to Afghanistan?

Yes, little girls are MUCH different to me. They are to be protected and nurtured not attacked by message board asshats.
Unless something has changed, women aren’t allowed in Combat Arms so I’m not the only one who thinks so.

No, td, I have it correct:
http://www.gallup.com/home.aspx
That’s the latest number: Obama 50, Romney 45.
The numbers that you reference — which I too referenced this morning — did not include the latest numbers.
Gallup uses a seven-day rolling average, so the numbers cited this morning compared the three days before the debate to the three days after the debate. In the three days after the debate, the polling was tied.
The new, latest numbers suggest that the race is reverting back to its previous state, but they are based only on a day or two’s worth of data, so we’ll have to see if that trend holds.
