To the rest of the country, this may come as a bit of a surprise. To those of us in Georgia, not so much.
From the AP:
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia Rep. Paul Broun said in videotaped remarks that evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are “lies straight from the pit of hell” meant to convince people that they do not need a savior.
The Republican lawmaker made those comments during a speech Sept. 27 at a sportsman’s banquet at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell. Broun, a medical doctor, is running for re-election in November unopposed by Democrats.
“God’s word is true,” Broun said, according to a video posted on the church’s website. “I’ve come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior.”
The quote comes at 34:50 in the video above, in which Broun first recounts his exploits as a big-game trophy hunter. Later, he witnesses for Christ and tells his own personal story of finding salvation at a moment of crisis. Personally, I think a more telling moment comes a little earlier, when he tells the audience that pastors of other, more mainstream Christian denominations “are going to send their people to hell” because in his opinion, they do not stress a personal relationship with their savior.
Broun, who is a physician by training, sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. I think it’s important to stress that the setting for his remarks is religious in character rather than political.

Yes, I did see that. I was disappointing to read about not arming them with bigger weapons but after Libya’s attack it is understandable. The raided a air base and got them anyway.
The rebels say the west abandoned them but they will never be our ally so I get why. The Turkey situation should be the focus on this situation to try to stop it so the war does not get out of control.
Also, Israel shot down their first drone so radar functions are capable of stopping drones.

josef,
“Not just Arab countries – all countries are in need of reform. Perhaps countries that think they are very advanced are the most in need of reform…
Iran too needs reform, but it’s the extent of reforms that is different. The same can be said for Syria. But my point is we need to talk about the method of these reforms.
There are two clear options [for Syria]: One is of war. Some feel that war will bring reform. They applaud conflict, they support conflict. The media climate might also support it. This might bring about a temporary end – a point might be reached where forces might come into the country to back the Syrian government. Or forces might come in to back the opposition, bringing things to an end in that way.
But I think that in the long term, this will harm Syria. Because you can’t rule with war. The Syrian military and people are of different tribes and they all have to get along. If tribal warfare breaks out, Syria will either break up – or it will continue, where one tribe takes control and the other will arm itself and keep fighting. So this is one method and it has supporters – on both sides.
But there’s a second way, that of a national dialogue for totally free elections. I think this second method is better and more beneficial for Syria…
Our relationship with Syria goes back a long time …. Some people want to use this to put pressure on Iran, to make accusations against Iran.
Do you really think that Syria doesn’t have friends who would arm it? Those who have been arming it for a long time? There are many in line before us. I’m not saying that people don’t make mistakes. There are those in every country that might make mistakes … I want to ask this question. Tomorrow this situation might happen in Jordan. Or it might happen in Saudi Arabia, or in Qatar and the UAE. Should there be war? I don’t agree with this. I think it’s very bad.
I think war is not a good method. Ultimately, Arab forces are more needed elsewhere – in places where people have been waiting 60 years for Arab forces…
Currently, we’re going towards a tribal war, and this is very dangerous. It’s not in the best interest of Syria. If tribal war breaks out, this will immediately spread to Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq. This isn’t a fire that can be contained. I’m more worried about the future.”

i used to get mad at black churches for having a pic of a white man as their saviour hanging in the church. but now i realize they were just victims of white supremacy. A white church would never have a pic of a black man as their saviour because whites were taught that they are superior to blacks while blacks were taught to bow down to whites which explains the reason why black churches have a pic of a white JESUS

In May 2009, Broun proposed failed legislation that would have proclaimed 2010 “The Year Of The Bible”. He also introduced a bill to ban the sale or rental of sexually explicit materials on U.S military installations. (Kisses from Eddie Meese.)
When Broun explained his reasons for voting against climate change legislation in June 2010, he called the entire concept of man-made global warming a conspiracy perpetuated by certain members of the scientific community.
On Fox News in May 2011, Broun said regarding political correctness, “Well, Shannon, what happened at the airport is, uh, an elderly lady walked — ah, followed me behind in the [TSA] screening process, and she was patted down. A little kid was patted down. And this guy in Arabian attire just walks right through.” He argued that lives and money could be saved by “intelligence” and less “political correctness”.

Billions and trillions of times over in this world we have seen this demonstrated. Life ALWAYS comes from life. That is all that has ever been observed, that is all that has ever been measured. Broun is right about evolution, but wrong about Big Bang. Big Bang, as argued by Jewish/agnostic Mortimer Adler is reasonable proof of the existence of YHWH or whatever appellation one wishes to use. Logical and internally sound argument in his pamphlet “How to Think About God.”
However, “evolution” remains a completely useless theory, with no potential application, other than those used by the Eugenicists (the earliest Darwinists), and their progeny, the abortionists and those who sought a permanent solution to the Jewish problem in the 1930s. (I understand some will argue, that Darwin’s theory can be dumbed down to a mere “things change.” Some are idiots.) Surely any sentient being of African descent will be profoundly embarrassed by Darwin’s analysis of that “inferior” race in the Descent of Man. (And surely the genius of a Thomas Sowell or Walter E Williams is a nearly-perfect disproof of Darwin’s internally-consistent but profoundly misguided ruminations?)
In any event, a thoughtful (i.e, “critical”) reading of Descent of Man should be sufficient for one to endorse Broun’s argument on the true source of the Darwin theory.

So basically here’s how it goes today in America. If someone believes differently than you, they are an idiot. If someone believes differently than you don’t try to understand why or the actual facts behind what they believe but instead blindly criticize them and their belief. Definitely makes sense.
In America people say to be “open minded” and “accepting” yet they turn around and hate people who are different from them. If people have an opinion you don’t like then instead of saying okay that’s your opinion we say “You dumbass, you’re crazy.”
So a man believes that something scientific is wrong… who cares? Science has been wrong before and it is simply his opinion that it could be wrong again. There are people believe that God does not exist, so let them believe it right or wrong as they may be. Why does this even matter in the long run? The man may believe something that other people cannot comprehend but he said this in a church, what the heck does that have to do with politics… who knows. All I’m saying is we have Freedom of Speech in this country and the freedom to have our own damn opinions. People have the right to criticize him and whoever else they please, but they make themselves look like the “idiots” in the long run.

BWAHAHAHAHA!
The theory of evolution is one of the great intellectual revolutions of human history, drastically changing our perception of the world and of our place in it. Charles Darwin put forth a coherent theory of evolution and amassed a great body of evidence in support of this theory. In Darwin’s time, most scientists fully believed that each organism and each adaptation was the work of the creator.

And remember, both Kepler and Newton calculated the earth to be only a few thousand years old. Kepler calculated a creation date of 3,992 B.C. Newton stated that, “For an educated man…any suggestion that the human past extended back further than 6,000 years was a vain and foolish speculation.”

Majestic murals, great masterpieces brimming with pulsating colors and details, provide a backdrop for many of the settings.

I wonder how Jesus avoided T-Rex?
Silly, they didn’t have turntables back then…

If I ever run into Broun, i’ll make sure and “point and laugh
Reminds me of what a friend once said of a dastardly fellow: “If I ever see him in a soup line, I’ll steal his spoon.”

See, even if Hank spoke beyond-inelegantly, there’s some basis for him using a “tip over” analogy, as he did. (and I might add, I’ve heard plenty of not-especially-conservative folks who continue to razz the guy–who is no dummy, actually–for what he’d said.)
There’s *no* basis for the kind of crap some of these righties are spouting about a young earth, about evolution being some weird conspiracy cooked up by “godless libruls” to make kiddies go to aitch-E-double-hockey-stix.
Jesus, save me from the dopes who just don’t get You.

Tell us ONE use for D.E. in operational science. And how is it than people of science (ANY field), such as Dr. Broun, can go all through their education and operate perfectly well in their field all the while completely denying D.E.?
Have you ever watched scientists track and fight viruses and bacteria that mutate over time? Have you not watched the HIV virus, for example, mutate over it’s known existence into different variations where some are more resistant to drugs than others? How do you think we will ever deal with MRSA, if not by using what we know about natural selection, evolution, and mutation?
Just because Darwin’s basic theory doesn’t agree with creationism doesn’t mean there are no scientific applications. Can you show where creationism has ONE applicable use in today’s sciences? Since you want to challenge others, why not challenge yourself?

jm,
So what happens if they prove how we got here with that billion dollar big bang theory machine?
Is it going to create millions of good paying jobs?
That is what we should be focusing on.

Anyway, in conclusion, so long as Paul Broun continues to draw breath as an elected official we’re all probably more or less f-cked.
Have a blessed rest-of-yer-Sunday! I’m outa here…

Thomas, if by nothing you mean that you would get laughed out of ANY post third grade science class in ANY public school in this entire country, yep, I got nuthin.
Hell, those morons in Cobb County had to take those idiotic and embarrassing stickers out of those science text books a few years ago. I’m sure you were not happy about that one, huh?
Your religion has messed up your mind.

The right has made politics all about religion, and then they want to walk away from it when they are caught, kind of like Romney and the 47%. Political posturing by the church only harms the church, it is put into a debate it has no business being in. The right uses it because it churns up votes, self servicing not God serving, they bring their lies into a church and make them part of the church. The lines blur between biblical and political, leadership and church and country do the same. If Wall Street has taught us anything it is not to mix government with opportunist, government will be used for the profit of others. Church is worse than Wall Street. The power of God as spoken and interpreted by people who seek power on earth, is one of the major obstacles to freedom and religion. If you don’t want your religion openly debated by non religious people keep it out of your campaigns or expect the trouble you have invited and then claim to be violated because of.

broun is a loyal bushie that helped w destroy our country.
If they held office and voted with w, they should go unless you want them to do it again.
It does not take a scientist for common sense.

It seems to me that Broun is pandering to his audience. He wants to be reelected so he doesn’t have to get a real job. And when I hear things like this from so called scientific minds in Georgia, I am so glad that I can say I live in the state of Atlanta which is different from the State of Georgia. 1 1/2 hrs in any direction from Metro Atlanta and you are in bubbaville who elect people like this to represent them. Really scary. I wonder if he ever prescribes antibiotics?
