To the rest of the country, this may come as a bit of a surprise. To those of us in Georgia, not so much.
From the AP:
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia Rep. Paul Broun said in videotaped remarks that evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are “lies straight from the pit of hell” meant to convince people that they do not need a savior.
The Republican lawmaker made those comments during a speech Sept. 27 at a sportsman’s banquet at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell. Broun, a medical doctor, is running for re-election in November unopposed by Democrats.
“God’s word is true,” Broun said, according to a video posted on the church’s website. “I’ve come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior.”
The quote comes at 34:50 in the video above, in which Broun first recounts his exploits as a big-game trophy hunter. Later, he witnesses for Christ and tells his own personal story of finding salvation at a moment of crisis. Personally, I think a more telling moment comes a little earlier, when he tells the audience that pastors of other, more mainstream Christian denominations “are going to send their people to hell” because in his opinion, they do not stress a personal relationship with their savior.
Broun, who is a physician by training, sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. I think it’s important to stress that the setting for his remarks is religious in character rather than political.

In landmark election, Venezuelan voters see two futures

Caracas, Venezuela
Venezuelans are casting ballots today in one of the most important elections of their lifetimes.
With their votes today, they will either keep their current president Hugo Chavez in power or elect the opposition candidate Henrique Capriles into office. Mr. Chavez has promised to forge forward with his “socialist revolution,” while Mr.Capriles has cast himself as a moderate who will maintain social safety nets for the poor but put Venezuela’s economy on more stable footing.
Surveys have varied wildly on who is poised to win today, but supporters of each side are convinced that they have the edge – and that their choice is the only viable option for Venezuela.

No problem what-so-ever with Senator Broun’s beliefs… big problem with his sitting on the science committee… Would you all want an Atheist on a religious advisory committee?
(hint… I don’t expect an honest answer from the resident wingnuts here, they’d come out against sliced bread if Obama or a democrat were for it…)

Is Broun a pathological liar? I don’t know, let’s ask his three ex-wives?
How frightening it is that both Paul Broun and Todd Akin sit on the House Committee on Science and Technology.

I just think that it’s very scary at how many people support the killing of innocent life for the sake of research. Because that is surely going to make this world a better place to live for our children. I say one second after death you’ll all change your minds..

The notion of omniscience is nonsense. Knowledge is obtained by a process, and any conscious being always has more they can learn.
Anyone who says “I don’t exist” is already contradicting themselves.

“A few hundred years ago, the world’s most notable scientists were convinced the earth was flat.”
Well, actually, no! It wasn’t a “few hundred years ago.” It was about 2600 years ago. Even fishermen’s wives from ancient times knew that the ocean didn’t swallow their husbands’ ships when the boats went over the horizon. Eratosthenes (276-194 B.C) proved the earth was round.
The concept that evolution, the Big Bang, etc are nothing more than unsupported hypotheses is just flat nonfactual. I know there are people on this site who consider themselves well-read, and intelligent who disagree with that statement. Because they believe they have a “right” to their opinion because they are educated. Sorry, you’re still wrong. You haven’t “paid the price” to hold a position in this field, just like Dr. Broun is not a “scientist.” This is not about your “rights” this is about your knowledge. Dr. Broun has had 2 introductory courses in chemistry, just like ANY B.A. decreed individual. He has 2 introductory courses in physics just like ANY geologist, History professor, or English graduate. He has a lot of courses in cutting up and stitching back the human body. I’ll defer to him on the anatomy of the human body. I WILL NOT defer to him in chemistry or physics. He doesn’t know diddly about “Science.” NEITHER HE, NOR 90% OF YOU, HAVE PAID THE PRICE TO HOLD A POSITION ON EVOLUTION.
Now I will agree that there are some “problem areas.” All theories undergo modification. when too many modifications have to be made, then new theories are proposed, but the newer theory overlies the old “disproved” theory. The new theory doesn’t displace the old theory. it merely refines it.
To quote a noted biochemist (Isaac Asimov) “…when people thought the earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the earth was spherical, they were wrong. But if you think that thinking the earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the earth is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together.” from THE RELATIVITY OF WRONG.
Whew… I feel better now. You can go back to your baiting each other on your different religions… uh politics.

Well, this is a taste as to why China will soon surpass the United States in technological advances.
Putting this moron on the in a leadership role and especially on the Science committee is just another example of how little interest many of these religious fundamentalists have for reason and evidence.

From his web site…”currently serves as Chairman of the Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee for the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee” This just scares the hell outta me! He says “Science is a lie straight from the pits of hell.” We are so in trouble America! Good bye logic and good common sense and the right to choose no matter WHAT your religious beliefs are.
