Romney’s ‘takeback’ of ‘47 percent’ diatribe unconvincing

Before we move on, I think it’s important to focus directly on Mitt Romney’s statement on Fox News last night in which he belatedly tried to retract his comments about the “47 percent.”

This is what he told Fox:

“Clearly in a campaign with hundreds if not thousands of speeches and question and answer sessions, now and then you’re gonna say something that doesn’t come out right. In this case I said something that’s just completely wrong.”

Listening to Romney, you might be led to believe that his original “47 percent” comments were just a garbled misstatement taken out of context, like his own “I’m not concerned about the very poor” or Barack Obama’s “You didn’t build that.” But listen again to the original statement in the video above. Or, if you prefer, you can read it here:

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. And I mean, the president starts off with 48, 49, 48—he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. And he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people—I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

That is not a statement ripped out of context. It is not Romney saying one thing but meaning another. In those remarks, Romney makes a sustained, passionate and seemingly heartfelt argument about what he truly believes. He is damn clear about it

But don’t take my word for it. Take Romney’s word for it. On the night that video was released, Romney appeared at a hastily called press conference. He was asked explicitly whether he was backing away from the statements, and he made it quite clear that he was not. While his remarks were “not elegantly stated,” he said, he doubled down on the basic message.

“It’s a message which I’m going to carry and continue to carry which is, look, the president’s approach is attractive to people who are not paying taxes because frankly my discussion about lowering taxes isn’t as attractive to them so I’m not likely to atrract them into my campaign.”

(As an aside, note Romney’s mention about his support for lowering taxes, a position that he explicitly denied in Wednesday’s debate in Denver.)

In the days that followed, Romney continued to defend his remarks and continued to press that argument. So did Paul Ryan, his running mate. That is what they truly believe; the passionate, dismissive statements about the 47 percent that Romney made to a roomful of people contributing $50,000 each to his campaign reflect his true value system.

His attempt to come out more than two weeks later and try to claim that his statements were “just completely wrong” and “didn’t come out right” is ludicrous and devoid of credibility.

Believe him at your peril.

More specifically…

“Politicians exaggerate and simplify. They make more promises than can be kept. They take inconsistent positions. Romney is guilty of this, but so is Obama. Obama says he favors tax reform but would also raise the top income tax rate from 35 to 39.6 percent. That’s the opposite of what most economists consider reform: cutting rates and broadening the tax base. Similarly, Obama has said he would maintain a strong military while rapidly reducing defense spending.

The media are rightly hounding Romney about how he’d offset revenue losses from his proposed cuts in tax rates. But the hounding ought to be evenhanded. Obama needs to be pressed on the many inconsistencies of his promises and policies….”

But with what I take home maybe I only have 1 employee.

You are correct though I should have stated that was my opinion.

stevie,

i read the article.

“Some blame belongs to Romney. He has made many vague, inconsistent and contradictory promises. He would cut all individual income tax rates by 20 percent and then offset lost revenue by eliminating tax breaks — but he doesn’t say which ones. He would reduce government spending from today’s 23 percent of gross domestic product to 20 percent, a $450 billion annual cut — but he doesn’t say how. He would balance the budget and raise defense spending. And so on. ”

Wait until Romney proposes to close some loopholes or cut some of the more popular programs to pay for them. The lobbyists will see to it that never happens.

Only thing we’ll get are the cuts and more deficit.

The post that people stop looking for jobs being a myth is not remotely true…and one of your most flagrant fouls…

Why not investigate the difference between the different unemployment calculations and you will see that once people are off unemployment, they are no longer considered unemployed….the unemployed figure is based on unemployment claims…best measure includes underemployed and those no longer in the job market for whatever reason..

Find one lie on MM please.

I can find examples of Brent Bozell lying easily. Here’s a freebie:

BRENT BOZELL, MEDIA RESEARCH CENTER: This president will say that he’s allowing drilling, but he just won’t give permits. Get this. Consider that oil production in this country was 10 million barrels a day when he took office. It’s down to 7 million barrels a day, and here the president is giving a speech today blaming Republicans for this. I mean, this should be an issue. He needs to be called out on this. [Fox News, Hannity, 2/23/12]

The Truth:
Here are the annual totals, in barrels produced, going back to 2003:

2003: 2,073,453,000
2004: 1,983,302,000
2005: 1,890,106,000
2006: 1,862,259,000
2007: 1,848,450,000
2008: 1,811,817,000
2009: 1,956,596,000
2010: 1,998,137,000

The full-year data is available only through 2010, but 10 months of data from 2011 have been made public. Through the end of October 2011, production totaled 1,713,038,000 barrels. If that pace continues, the year-end total should be around 2,055,646,000 barrels — higher than any year since 2003. That’s eight years ago, just as Obama said. [PolitiFact.com, 1/24/12]

East Lake Ira,

The difference is that the “cottage industry” as you say, is entirely honest in that it is subjective. What CNN and MSNBC do is employ ostensibly objective news anchors as attack dogs.

Just look at the bogus October surprise Dan Rather tried to sneak on George W, eventually giving in and saying that his forged document was true, because it revealed the truth about what really happened.

It is really the mainstream media that is entirely DISHONEST in portraying itself as “news” rather than selectively editted and biased opinion.

Another case in point: the killings in Libya and the Obama coverup would be a news firestorm if a Republican had been so derelict in his administration’s duties.

The upside for us is that once again, Obama will be exposed to the truth for the first time in an environment he can not totally control, the foreign affairs debate with Mitt Romney. Obama will be as helpless, feckless and bumbling as he was this week–because truth is the genuine article, and he can’t run from it, especially not when he’s dealing with someone as intelligent and as prepared as Romney to kick his skinny butt again.

I was asking because your previous remarks were otherwise incoherent.”

Before I go…

“…to ween my once very heavy TN accent…”

The question is, to me, why would you want to do that? Didn’t you speak grammatically, syntactically, and lexically correct English as befitting a person of your education and class standing? :-)

I know that I am swimming in a cesspool here, but consider the reasons why it is a cesspool.

Romney beats the crap out of your liar-in-chief and you people still give him bad grades and ridiculous excuses like the high altitude of Denver. Obama says in his true Marxist speech that “you didn’t build that bridge” and you defend his slip.

Now we find out that the unemployment numbers conveniently drop just before the election from 8.1% to 7.8% and the Bookman/Wasserman/Myrmidons team goes into overdrive. Not so fast liberals. No sale.

Are we living in Venezuela or Russia? Those numbers are cooked and embarrassingly bogus. Is it any coincidence that the BLS is comprised of large Obama campaign donors? Is it any coincidence that no president has ever been elected with unemployment over 8%? There is a credible ground swell of rejection to what the BLS has perpetrated on the American public.

This new blog post by the Bookman propaganda wing of the Democrat Party is irrelevant about Romney’s explanation of the 47% miscue, based on the track record so far by the Obama reelection team. Bookman’s response to anything that Romney says is coming from the mouth of a hypocrite and low class party minion. Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot to include his little peanut gallery that chimes into anything that he carps about.

Shortish answer…I did not like it. It didn’t fit in with the image of who I saw myself. Similar to people who have plastic surgery. To me things like that are a personal choice and if others judge that choice they can suck it.

At least media said the our President won on substance but it is hard to debate a liar running away from his previous positions.

Mitt Romney should take a big gulp — 7-Eleven shoppers have already decided on President Obama.

According to 7-Eleven’s “7-Election” poll, which allows coffee drinkers to pick a blue cup for Obama or a red one for Romney, Obama is leading with 60 percent of “votes.” Romney currently has 40 percent.

Please, Donovan, you’re discrediting yourself here.

You’re making a joke of yourself if you seriously think a “you didn’t build that”, which is totally ripped out of context and misleading, a lie, then you have no business expressing a political opinion on anything really.

Hey, thanks for keeping the Imperial Japanese Army warm for us for six months on Guadalcanal.

You know, so the Army could come in and knock them off that rock six weeks later. ;)

And how’d you like how he wrapped his lies in boldfaced lies and the combined them with a racist dogwhistle gutpunch with “boy” and delivered it all in a speedball to send him reeling?

Jay Bookman, any interest in keeping a log of all those posters here claiming the BLS is a partisan pawn, you know, for future reference?

That could be quite entertaining to pull that out again in the not-too-distant future, I’d think.
