Romney’s ‘takeback’ of ‘47 percent’ diatribe unconvincing

Before we move on, I think it’s important to focus directly on Mitt Romney’s statement on Fox News last night in which he belatedly tried to retract his comments about the “47 percent.”

This is what he told Fox:

“Clearly in a campaign with hundreds if not thousands of speeches and question and answer sessions, now and then you’re gonna say something that doesn’t come out right. In this case I said something that’s just completely wrong.”

Listening to Romney, you might be led to believe that his original “47 percent” comments were just a garbled misstatement taken out of context, like his own “I’m not concerned about the very poor” or Barack Obama’s “You didn’t build that.” But listen again to the original statement in the video above. Or, if you prefer, you can read it here:

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. And I mean, the president starts off with 48, 49, 48—he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. And he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people—I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

That is not a statement ripped out of context. It is not Romney saying one thing but meaning another. In those remarks, Romney makes a sustained, passionate and seemingly heartfelt argument about what he truly believes. He is damn clear about it

But don’t take my word for it. Take Romney’s word for it. On the night that video was released, Romney appeared at a hastily called press conference. He was asked explicitly whether he was backing away from the statements, and he made it quite clear that he was not. While his remarks were “not elegantly stated,” he said, he doubled down on the basic message.

“It’s a message which I’m going to carry and continue to carry which is, look, the president’s approach is attractive to people who are not paying taxes because frankly my discussion about lowering taxes isn’t as attractive to them so I’m not likely to atrract them into my campaign.”

(As an aside, note Romney’s mention about his support for lowering taxes, a position that he explicitly denied in Wednesday’s debate in Denver.)

In the days that followed, Romney continued to defend his remarks and continued to press that argument. So did Paul Ryan, his running mate. That is what they truly believe; the passionate, dismissive statements about the 47 percent that Romney made to a roomful of people contributing $50,000 each to his campaign reflect his true value system.

His attempt to come out more than two weeks later and try to claim that his statements were “just completely wrong” and “didn’t come out right” is ludicrous and devoid of credibility.

Believe him at your peril.

Romney could not give a fig about uninsured Americans- anything he said in the debates was a pile of BS. He could care less about folks on the dole or social security or verans. Go research how Romneycare came about. Romneycare was a pure business decision because the state fund for unreimbursed hospital care due to Reagan’s unfunded mandate was insolvent and the state was going in the hole to fund it. Now Mass. has soaked the US taxpayers for over eight billion dollars of excess Medicaid which his boy Ryan wants to eliminate. Its all business with Mitt. Ayn Rand would love these guys.

INDEPENDENT THINKER

The current projections are that the number of uninsured under ACA after full implementation is that at least 20 million will remain uninsured…its just a differenct demographic..the folks who lost coverage due to employers dropping programs will replace the unnerving amount of new insureds that are 100% subsidized by taxpayers..

This is why Obama’s promise that the bill would be cost neutral is such BS…CBO now estimates the taxpayer cost to well exceed $1 trillion over 10 years…this number will likely grow once the losses mount for insurers via state markets…

Great column by George Will today…best excerpt:

“Barack Obama, knight of the peevish countenance, illustrated William F. Buckley’s axiom that liberals who celebrate tolerance of other views always seem amazed that there are other views. Obama, who is not known as a martyr to the work ethic and who might use a teleprompter when ordering lunch, seemed uncomfortable with a format that allowed fluidity of discourse”

It is the flip flop, saying stuff and taking it back, it is the real Romney. If you can tell where this guy is going you should be working for the CIA. And this country lets him get away with it. I think one of the problems Obama has is he keeps thinking someone besides himself is going to shut the dog up in the middle of the night. Not the press, or the moderator or the adults on duty find that their task. But watch as O lays into him, which he may be left no choice but to do, how many scream foul. Just like they were prepared to do if he had used executive privilege to overcome the constipation of the Congress, they will jump on him for being too aggressive. The pundits were saying all month O cannot respond to Romney’s lies in angry or let him get under his skin. O followed that script and now Romney has torn up his 100th script and is starting over with yet another new personality.

Mr. Bookman,

That is what they truly believe

Claiming what Romney truly believes or does not believe is a distraction. Until just this very week, what Obama believes or doesn’t believe has been entirely taken for granted by the “mainstream” media, and yes, I mean you too, Mr. Bookman. (As an aside, we’re told that whatever absurdity that Joe Biden offers to the mic should be dismissed as “Oh, that’s just Joe”). Whatever Obama says is redefined by Jay Carney almost immediately.

But the problem isn’t what Obama believes anymore. The problem is what Obama has done, what he is doing now and what he plans to do.

The solution to it is what Mitt Romney is going to do.

It saddens me that almost one half of the country (at least rhetorically speaking) can be hoodwinked by such a thin argument as “what Romney believes.” Going by that logic, it makes sense then that you aren’t just talking out of both sides of your mouth, you liberals, but that you believe in two mutually exclusive things at the same time.

This isn’t good reasoning which would make for good government in a republic such as ours. Sadly, for liberals That is what they truly believe, period, and there is no sense to it.

At least the fruits of your belief (or lack of fruit, more appropriately) will be stymied this election; it appears. With any luck and good turnout, the nation can uproot what you have done.

Conservative efforts to do much the same thing that may be likened to Media Matters are Breitbart and the Media Research Center are much older. (the MRC has existed since at least the 1980’s, so far as I am aware).

LIBS,

You guys really need to loosen up…a real fact is this:

The candidate (including congressional and presidential) that spends more that opponent wins 94% of elections..

I think your guy may win the spending title…

Its not an election…its an auction!!!! :-)

While all these hand-wringing Freedom Forum types talk about objectivity, the conservative media likes to rap the liberal media on the knuckles for not being objective. We’ve created this cottage industry in which it pays to be un-objective. It pays to be subjective as much as possible. It’s a great way to have your cake and eat it too. Criticize other people for not being objective. Be as subjective as you want. It’s a great little racket. I’m glad we found it actually.

Obambarrassment: I accept that as a legitimate criticism. I guess I am asking if there’s any reason to believe they aren’t telling the truth or that they are corrupt.

http://business.salary.com/why-how-your-employees-are-wasting-time-at-work/

“Of the people we surveyed, 64 percent said they visit non-work related websites every day during work hours. However, that number is down nearly 10 percent from the last time we conducted this survey in 2008. With so many jobs lost in the last four years, it’s likely employees have less time to waste because they’re spending more time on their added job responsibilities.”

To be fair, both suggested cuts and most of others are complete small ball, moreso by BO that his competitor…at least PBS is also supported by private funding…I watch a ton of PBS so I hope it stays in tact..

That being said, if anything, romney is a prospective liar since it is unlikely that any presidential plan delivered in the heat of battle will bear anything to what will actually get done…Look at BO macro promise failures….end lobbyist control of DC, cut deficit, immigration policy, HC bill will be revenue neutral blah blah blah…

Lighten up, Bucky,

You never heard of Steven Wright?

“One day I got on the bus, and when I stepped in, I saw the most gorgeous blond Chinese girl. I sat beside her.

I said, ‘Hi’, And she said, ‘Hi’, and then I said, ‘Nice day, isn’t it?’.

And she said, ‘I saw my analyst today and he says I have a problem.’

So I asked, ‘What’s the problem?’ She replied, ‘I can’t tell you. I don’t even know you.’

I said, ‘Well, sometimes it’s good to tell your problems to a perfect stranger on a bus.’

So she said, ‘Well, my analyst said I’m a nymphomaniac and I only like Jewish cowboys… By the way, my name is Denise.’

I said, ‘Hello, Denise. My name is Bucky Goldstein.’.

Look at this thread in the past few hours. Then again, it’s a special case. You can diagram the progression of the posts and style – it’s quite predictable.

But as Doggone/GA pointed out, it’s mild entertainment in small doses -

Soros does not fund Media Matters.

Cons hate MM because they publish the truth backed up by facts, links, video, transcripts, and research.

GUess I believe Romney taking back this comment just like I believe today’s jobs report. Then again, the unemployment figures only reflect individuals looking for work. If they give up – viola! Not counted as unemployed. Still, can’t wait to see the Obama administration start putting the spin on jobs….

Ok. Those are your opinions.

How has the way presidential plans have been presented worked out lately?

Usually when two parties have a fight or disagreement without doubt one side is usually more at fault than the other. However it is also quite rare when either side is innocent.

So based on your name I’m guessing you think there’s an alternative available to your hated Obama? What big huge differences really exist between him and the guy who’s running against him, do tell oh enlightened one ..
