Romney’s ‘takeback’ of ‘47 percent’ diatribe unconvincing

Before we move on, I think it’s important to focus directly on Mitt Romney’s statement on Fox News last night in which he belatedly tried to retract his comments about the “47 percent.”

This is what he told Fox:

“Clearly in a campaign with hundreds if not thousands of speeches and question and answer sessions, now and then you’re gonna say something that doesn’t come out right. In this case I said something that’s just completely wrong.”

Listening to Romney, you might be led to believe that his original “47 percent” comments were just a garbled misstatement taken out of context, like his own “I’m not concerned about the very poor” or Barack Obama’s “You didn’t build that.” But listen again to the original statement in the video above. Or, if you prefer, you can read it here:

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. And I mean, the president starts off with 48, 49, 48—he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. And he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people—I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

That is not a statement ripped out of context. It is not Romney saying one thing but meaning another. In those remarks, Romney makes a sustained, passionate and seemingly heartfelt argument about what he truly believes. He is damn clear about it

But don’t take my word for it. Take Romney’s word for it. On the night that video was released, Romney appeared at a hastily called press conference. He was asked explicitly whether he was backing away from the statements, and he made it quite clear that he was not. While his remarks were “not elegantly stated,” he said, he doubled down on the basic message.

“It’s a message which I’m going to carry and continue to carry which is, look, the president’s approach is attractive to people who are not paying taxes because frankly my discussion about lowering taxes isn’t as attractive to them so I’m not likely to atrract them into my campaign.”

(As an aside, note Romney’s mention about his support for lowering taxes, a position that he explicitly denied in Wednesday’s debate in Denver.)

In the days that followed, Romney continued to defend his remarks and continued to press that argument. So did Paul Ryan, his running mate. That is what they truly believe; the passionate, dismissive statements about the 47 percent that Romney made to a roomful of people contributing $50,000 each to his campaign reflect his true value system.

His attempt to come out more than two weeks later and try to claim that his statements were “just completely wrong” and “didn’t come out right” is ludicrous and devoid of credibility.

Believe him at your peril.

Obama is giving Romney the old rope-a-dope. Just let Mittens keep talking with a camera in his face. Then assemble a montage of all the contradictions and flip flops. End it it with a “Who is this guy, really?”. Only problem is it could not run as a 1 minute commercial, it would have to be a 30 minute infomercial.

came across this, which might explain why the unemployment rate moved so much supposedly in one month: http://www.bls.gov/ces/cesprelbmk.htm

386,000 new jobs went uncounted during the previous year. BLS just caught up with them in a separate benchmarking exercise. That is likely to account for why it looked like a move of 0.3% this month.

And, getting a jump on those marvelous unemployment numbers that Bozo is trucking on about……

About 18 mos ago, I submitted a post on this blog which stated that the unemployment numbers would stay about the same until just prior to the election whereas they would drop below 8%. Well, for the first time in 43 months we supposedly have an unemployment rate at 7.8%. However, just to keep the unemployment rate at a steady 8.2%, nearly 200K jobs/month must be created….. just to maintain the status quo. The BLS states that only 114K jobs were created in the month of Sept. How do you go from 8.2 to 7.8 with these numbers? Answer….. nearly 8M people in this country are employed part time or as temp workers. That number went up to 8.6M, partly due to the holiday hires and temporary employment. In other words, these jobs numbers that Bozo is crowing on about are only temporary and will probably go back to status quo in January, conveniently after the election. Our unemployment rate still is at a realistic rate of 11.5-15%, depending on the ethnic group that you poll and their locale. More smoke and mirrors….

I would be more convinced if Romney said why he was wrong, what was wrong about what he said, and why he knows it now not to be true.

Then I would want to know why he didn’t know all this in the first place — why he as someone who’s been running for president for, like, 10 years has not bothered to learn about the very real struggles of people who are trying to make it in our country. What are their real challenges? What real obstacles stand in their way of their self-sufficiency, if not success? But no, he just decided that the poor, the working poor and the lower middle class just simply don’t take “personal responsibility.” That’s reflects a complete lack of empathy and understanding, which he is just now bothering to cultivate?

October 5th, 2012

What is convincing is how incompetent Obama appeared on Wednesday when confronted with a Romney who was not a caricature created by the Obama spin machine. With the Axelrod teleprompter filter removed, it has been fun to watch the lemmings in Obamaland freak out as the Prince of Fools elected by the Confederacy of Dunces is exposed for being the naked Emporer he truly is. In the next few weeks, Americans will be inundated with film clips, sound bites, dubious “fact checks”, character assasinations, and partisan propaganda from the Obama camp trying to salvage the Romney image they so carefully crafted over the past year. The goal is to create any distraction from a discussion of the Obama administration’s performance over the past four years. More importantly, what became obvious in the debate, is that Obama is not capable of defining what he would do in a second term. Obama wants to talk about Romney and Romney wants to talk about solving the problems of the world. There will be lots of nastiness coming out of the Obama spin machine to protect the Emporer from being confronted by direct questions about his failed policies and inability to deal with the critical problems facing the U.S. today.

Obama lied about cutting the deficit in half.

So many politicians cynically lie that we don’t have to go out of our way to make them worse than they already are. Merriam-Webster defines a lie as “making an untrue statement with intent to deceive.” Again, with intent to deceive.

When President Obama indicated that he planned to cut the deficit in half, he was already one month into his presidency (therefore, no longer campaigning for office), he had inherited a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit, the largest in the nations history, and he inherited the worst recession since the great depression.

At that time, he did pledge to the cut the deficit in half. Why would he lie? To do so after already winning the election and taking office makes no sense. Yes, he was overly optimistic, in part, because the modified GDP numbers and job numbers showed that the recession was much worse than indicated when he made that statement. In fact, the economy had contracted over twice as much in the months just before his inauguration than economists knew at the time. When making that statement, President Obama should have had the good sense to remember that initial data is imperfect and that he, single-handedly, cannot directly influence such minutia. (Mitt Romney is now making the same mistake by telling audiences that he can single-handedly create 12 million jobs.) Nevertheless, President Obama did not lie, and too much optimism based on imperfect information does not rise to the level of disdain that Republicans seem to think it does.

—————————-

“In the fourth quarter of 2008, which immediately followed the 2008 financial crisis, economic activity fell sharply. BEA’s initial, or “advance” estimate of GDP for the quarter, which was released on January 30, 2009, showed a decrease of 3.8 percent at an annual rate. In the second estimate, which was released on February 27, 2009, the revised estimate showed a decrease of 6.2 percent. Since then, the estimate has been revised several more times (in March 2009, July 2009, July 2010, and July 2011), and the latest estimate shows a decrease of 8.9 percent.”

You have a rather funny nasty streak, you know that?”

If you don’t have courage, you gotta have something.

We’ve already had plenty of Romney supporters who would not address the Romney topic, instead deflecting directly to the president.

Ben Shockley, I hope you are just on this board for your entertainment purposes because you aren’t going to be able to have a rational conversation with the gals on this board. You will never convince them that they are not entitled to what you’ve worked for.

We should be thanking our President for saving our economy with our votes and vote out the failed gop congress for their obstruction.

Keep moving forward not back to losing nine million jobs.

After all that you still lace our posts with “kammypoo.”

At least Romney tries to reinvent himself.

I’ve observed before. It appears it’s all about attention. Like the kid who acts out, others ignore, ups the ante and acts out again, until finally the teacher or other kids yell at him. Positive or negative doesn’t matter – it’s all attention, and that’s all that matters.

Liberals are a hoot. Kinda like puppies chasing a spot shone by a flashlight. The pounce wherever the mainstream media shines the light.

Ben – according to the cons – too laste, it already is.

BTW, Ben, why do YOU think Romney is flip-flopping about the 47%? I’m interested in hearing your take on this subject.

I know there have been many things in my life that I have said that we’re not correct.

Many of those times I argued my position that I was right and was misunderstood.
Only later to come to know I was wrong and then I would try to communicate that to hose with whom my comment(s) had wronged.

I ain’t perfect don’t think I should apply perfection to politicians either.

Apparently some do, and some only apply changes of heart or mind as a bad thing depending on political party.

Have none of you condemning Romney ever said something that you regretted not at the time but fully so after time had passed?

He mis-spoke. Many of hte 47% who pay no federal income tax are conservatives workign their way up the ladder. Don’t know if he actually didn’t know any better or just mis-spoke. And neither do you.

The debate only proved that Romney is an agressive liar who will say anything he needs to say to get elected. While I don’t have a clue as to what he really believes, I do know that the same jerks who advised GWBush on how to run things are now running Romney. Since, unlike kkkyaker, I know that we were losing 800,000 jobs per month by the time Bush’s terms were ending, I don’t want to go back to those times. Anybody who thinks the GOP will get it right this time hasn’t studied history very well.
