Romney’s ‘takeback’ of ‘47 percent’ diatribe unconvincing

Before we move on, I think it’s important to focus directly on Mitt Romney’s statement on Fox News last night in which he belatedly tried to retract his comments about the “47 percent.”

This is what he told Fox:

“Clearly in a campaign with hundreds if not thousands of speeches and question and answer sessions, now and then you’re gonna say something that doesn’t come out right. In this case I said something that’s just completely wrong.”

Listening to Romney, you might be led to believe that his original “47 percent” comments were just a garbled misstatement taken out of context, like his own “I’m not concerned about the very poor” or Barack Obama’s “You didn’t build that.” But listen again to the original statement in the video above. Or, if you prefer, you can read it here:

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. And I mean, the president starts off with 48, 49, 48—he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. And he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people—I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

That is not a statement ripped out of context. It is not Romney saying one thing but meaning another. In those remarks, Romney makes a sustained, passionate and seemingly heartfelt argument about what he truly believes. He is damn clear about it

But don’t take my word for it. Take Romney’s word for it. On the night that video was released, Romney appeared at a hastily called press conference. He was asked explicitly whether he was backing away from the statements, and he made it quite clear that he was not. While his remarks were “not elegantly stated,” he said, he doubled down on the basic message.

“It’s a message which I’m going to carry and continue to carry which is, look, the president’s approach is attractive to people who are not paying taxes because frankly my discussion about lowering taxes isn’t as attractive to them so I’m not likely to atrract them into my campaign.”

(As an aside, note Romney’s mention about his support for lowering taxes, a position that he explicitly denied in Wednesday’s debate in Denver.)

In the days that followed, Romney continued to defend his remarks and continued to press that argument. So did Paul Ryan, his running mate. That is what they truly believe; the passionate, dismissive statements about the 47 percent that Romney made to a roomful of people contributing $50,000 each to his campaign reflect his true value system.

His attempt to come out more than two weeks later and try to claim that his statements were “just completely wrong” and “didn’t come out right” is ludicrous and devoid of credibility.

Believe him at your peril.

Frankly, this speech or question and answer session or whatever it was, it what put a face on Romney for me. He was at his most comfortable, his most articulate, his most spontaneous self in front of people. This, for me, was the real Romney. He just did not know he was being recorded.
No handlers. No script. No teleprompter..just him rapping about what he believes. Hi gut exposed!

This was not a mistake. This was not an inarticulate blubber for the pressures of too many campaign stops. This was not some talking points gone bad.

This was Romney in his element, and for him to now be crawling back to talk about he was wrong is actually the salamander coming back to retrieve his slime. Romney is a fraud!

[...]

Limbaugh added that in the event of such violence, “obviously, it’d be the pollsters. We’d have to blame the pollsters. They would be the ones responsible for this. I wonder how they would feel about that, to have that happen. We don’t want to contemplate such things.”

October 5th, 2012
12:39 pm

Jay,

For anyone who supports Obama, to call Romney or any other person a liar is almost comical. You remained silent when and as Obama himself proved that he would say anything to get elected. You have remained silent on the fact GITMO is still open, wire taps are still being used, that he increased the war effort in Afganistan, that he has now endorsed the use of military tribunals, he increased the deficit, that he has reached across the isle and that he would stop indiscriminate killing inflicted by drone attacks.

He said this stuff prior to The election which he won largely based on his promises to reverse the course Bush was taking on all of these issues. He has not done any of them.

Your selective outrage is being seen as just that, selective.

I will even give you guys your old and tired excuse that its Bush’s fault. You excuse Obama by simply saying that. You ignored and continue to ignore Obama telling his supporters in San Francisco his thoughts on prying the guns from the rednecks hands. The fact is Obama has told some huge lies and your party has stood by in silence as he has done so.

Obama is allowed to continue his lies unchecked because you are more loyal to yor party platform than you are the truth. It’s admirable that your party wanted to stop the killing, close GITMO and, oh yeah- cut the deficit in half, but the fact is Obama did none of that. The question I have is why do you support a man who you absolutely know lied to YOU ?

If you wish to say Obama didn’t know what he was going to face then finish the thought with the fact that he should have kept his promises to himself if he didn’t know what he was talking about.

As for Romney, you are right. I think he meant what he originally said. You cannot dispute the vast majority of what he said either, rather you can act like he is morally wrong and ignore the facts as you fane insult. There is 46% of us who don’t pay taxes. The extreme majority of those folks will never support Romney. It is a waste of time to target those who will never support you ( I doubt very seriously you will see Obama supporters trying to plan how to win the vote of the southern white male ) There are political facts at play, facts that are true regardless of how much your party try’s to ignore them.

By the way I watched every second of the debate so your own lies, which are attempts at guiding the uninformed, is wasted on me. Romney said several times that he wanted to lower the rates, meaning taxes. He said he also wants to lower deductions. Matter of fact it was explained tomObama during Romneys response to him when he tried to say what you are trying to say. Remember when he looked at Obama and said what he wishes to do has never been tried ? he continued by saying that lowering the rates while taking some deductions would increase or at the minimum be revenue neutral ? remember when he told Obama that subsidies to big oil could be put on the table if the rates were lowered ? remember it was during that discussion that Romney pointed out Obama had given 5 times the deductions to the green energy companies than big oil has ? You must have been in the frig when he said it, you know since you are saying that he denied wanting to lower taxes. Hit rewind on the TiVo and you will see it for yourself, but wait you knew this already didn’t you ?

Combine the above with….. “This Health Care Plan will only cost the American taxpayer 940B dollars”…… “I saved General Motors”……. “No one who makes under 250K/yr will see their tax bill go up by a single dime”…… “We will cut the deficit in half during my first term”….. “This will be the most transparent administration in history”….. “My administration will have no lobbyists”…… And on and on and on…… How can anyone believe this clown?

Ramzad, my sentiments exactly. This was the real Romney, unfiltered. It was like hearing a top car salesman talk in the break room about how stupid the customers are.

Obama lied period.

GITMO is open he said it would be closed.

His own party passed the law to keep it open, yes conservatives want it open but that has nothing to do with Obama lying about closing it.

Lets see Obama can force through the largest most controversial medical bill in the history of the country, by paying off senators with exemptions and abortion language and he can bomb the hell out of any country he wishes but, as commander in chief he can’t close a military prison.

Charming. If you libs were fish you would be on the dinner table, hook still in your mouths.

Why Ben…. sure! Weren’t you suppose to give a book report on those $100k jobs at MARTA?

Here’s an idea. Look at the time frame Obama discussed cutting the deficit and then tell me when the economy crashed.

Here’s the concept that you might just try. Before you post, think…think again…..use your brain….think…. then, maybe just then, post.

Speaking of intellectually dishonest, Ben, which Romney are you voting for?

The Romney A who uttered the now infamous “47% of Americans are victims”?

Or the Romney B who said that Romney A was”completely wrong”?

Don’t be a blogging victim and don’t be your usual timid self – just answer the question.

Or don’t…

Hey fair and balanced

I have no idea where the limits will be. Romney has ran a campaign exactly like you should. Promising actual numbers when you don’t know them is an Obama thing.

Wonder why you did ask Obama for details ?

I know one thing you have double standards. Tell me what Obama will do to reduce the debt. He has told us for 4, actually 6 years he would do it. Tell me how he will.

He talks about using war money yet he ants to hire more teachers, cops and scientist. He wants to invest hat money into the infrastructure. If he does that then how does he use it to pay off debt ?

Your funny

“This is not what a real recovery looks like,” the former Massachusetts governor said in a statement shortly after the jobless figures were released.

Yep. If we’re to have a real recovery, we have to get rid of tightwad a-holish conservative legislators who don’t want to spend an extra dime on a) stuff people actually need right now, and b) infrastructure people will need going forward.

And there’s an app for that, so to speak.

(Later we can work on getting genuine progressives into more/bigger positions of power, and purging the courts of Federalist Society stooges. But, nation’s gotta learn to walk before it can run.)

I’m voting for the one who doesn’t have a four-year record of miserable failure, both domestically and in foreign affairs. The one who’s not a socialist. The one who doesn’t hang out with Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright. The one who can think and speak without a teleprompter. The one who has significant experience as a successful businessman. The one who doesn’t have to pretend to be a Christian. The one who’s not a community organizer. The one who doesn’t consider going on The View to be presidential. The one who hasn’t expanded food stamps by 16 million people.

You know, that one.

It would be interesting to go back and see if any of those defending Mitt’s “takeback” today were cheering him on in total agreement with his “47 percent” attack in the initial blogposts on the subject.

If you would put it in the context in which the statement was originally meant (the entitlement society are democratic voters and will not vote for me) then I will defend his original statement. I would then say that this take back is no worse then Obama disavowing himself from Rev Wright (when we all know that he believes everything Wright said and is proven in the video release from his Hampton speech).

It is all about politics.

He said the economy was the worst since th Great Depression befoer he took office, and said he would cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term.

I think maybe “think befoer you speak” doesn’t mean what you think it means. But then, if you were smart you wouldn’t be a liberal.

My best friend’s a Northern EuropeanScandinavian ‘mutt,’ and when we were kids, I once heard his dad extol the family’s Norwegian heritage with this little bit of doggerel (misspellings intentional to indicate pronunciation):

Through the ‘veeds’
Run a thousand ‘Svedes’
Pursued by ‘vone Norvegian’

Nice post yourself. Now dispute it please.

Did he promise to close it ?

Did he close it ?

Did his own party vote to keep it open ?

Did he organize any opposition to his own party on the issue ?

Didn’t think you would actually address the subject, but that’s your issue not mine.

By the way maybe I should ask, it is still open right ? You know how talk shows are lies lies lies.

Next they will be saying Obama wants to make churches hand out condoms
