A well-earned tribute to the man at the hot corner

As you may have noticed, I’m not a particular fan of heavy metal. Once I hit 17 or 18 and started to explore more thoroughly all the various types of music available, my Black Sabbath and Judas Priest albums went more or less unplayed.

Tonight, though, let’s make an exception. With the Braves playing a one-game playoff at the Ted for entry into the full playoffs, this could be Atlanta’s final sendoff for the great Chipper Jones. We went to the game Sunday to watch his final regularly scheduled home appearance — we bought the tickets back in July, and weren’t certain then whether the Braves would make the post-season — and the 40-year-old made three sterling plays in the field that any 25-year-old would have been proud to make.

When you start talking Chipper, a lot of memories come back. I remember going to my first Braves game back in 1990, against the Cubs, and there were maybe 5,000 people in the place, with 4,950 of them rooting for the Cubs. That doesn’t happen anymore, and Chipper Jones, along with Bobby Cox and a certain trio of pitchers, helped make that transformation possible.

Essentially growing up in the Atlanta spotlight, Jones has had his occasional stumbles, but overall he has conducted himself with dignity and class, doing great credit to himself and the Braves. He’s also played some clutch, Hall of Fame-caliber baseball along the way.

So to mark the occasion and as a well-deserved tribute, here’s Chipper’s walkup song, “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne, a veteran himself who is even more grizzled than Chipper.

I don’t know if he took my request seriously or not, but I did get a bit of satisfaction from this year’s team. I had a run-in with Schuerholz back in May right after the Braves lost 8 in a row. I asked him to not bring back the powder blue looking pullovers no matter what happened for the rest of the season. He got a good laugh from that, and told me that we wouldn’t see them. :)

Go Cards. If it ain’t the Braves, I always pull for the Cardinals due to some family and old friend connections.

I’d like to dedicate a tune to my long lost friend, Robert. Many years ago we worked together in the SE Missouri Ozarks and talked ourselves into free lodging at a state park that was closed for the winter. Baseball season started before the kicked us out for the paying customers, and my friend, from Cape Girardeau, Mo (the only inland Cape in the world, according to him) was a great Cards fan. We had an AM radio that we listened to the Cards games on and a cassette player that we listened to CSN on.

This is such a disgrace

http://www.ajc.com/news/news/transportation/marta-readies-for-financial-overhaul/nSWPy/

Especially if you think about it in this context: the amount wasted by MARTA over a decade could’ve paid for two new rail lines, one to Emory, CDC, and the other to someplace else like the galleria (or a ton of light rail). Or it could’ve paid to build the Beltline single handedly.

The MARTA waste has cost the city of Atlanta dearly. Very dearly.

Whoa Bookman—-how in the world are you applauding someone for individual achievement?!?! Your god and our Pres-tard Obama would say about Chipper: “He didn’t have that career, he didn’t hit those home runs…..SOMEBODY ELSE did that, somebody else made that happen.” Which is much like giving credit the stadium ground crew—the pretext being that the government has an ethical right to take Chipper’s salary and redistribute it to all the “little people” along the way that Obama thinks are more deserving of Chipper’s pay. So basically, like all selectively Libbies….success and accomplishing a dream is only okay if you’re an actor, or athlete, or musician, or artist, etc. (a galley of certain chosen careers that progressives grant a pass from class hatreds)—-BUT, if one worked hard, made sacrifices, took the risks and paid the personal prices to succeed in business, THEN the Leftist gloves come off and you guys scream “rape!”—and in so doing, YOU SLANDER REALLY GOOD PEOPLE by a childish, adolescent broad brush of irrational HATE. If you praise Chipper, yet dennouce the businessman—then you are a hypocrite! Then again, I’ve yet to meet a liberal who isn’t.

In Obama’s case, anything he didn’t get done before 2010 was blocked by a Congress who found it more important to so no to ANYTHING the President proposed than to do what was best for the Country.
