As you may have noticed, I’m not a particular fan of heavy metal. Once I hit 17 or 18 and started to explore more thoroughly all the various types of music available, my Black Sabbath and Judas Priest albums went more or less unplayed.
Tonight, though, let’s make an exception. With the Braves playing a one-game playoff at the Ted for entry into the full playoffs, this could be Atlanta’s final sendoff for the great Chipper Jones. We went to the game Sunday to watch his final regularly scheduled home appearance — we bought the tickets back in July, and weren’t certain then whether the Braves would make the post-season — and the 40-year-old made three sterling plays in the field that any 25-year-old would have been proud to make.
When you start talking Chipper, a lot of memories come back. I remember going to my first Braves game back in 1990, against the Cubs, and there were maybe 5,000 people in the place, with 4,950 of them rooting for the Cubs. That doesn’t happen anymore, and Chipper Jones, along with Bobby Cox and a certain trio of pitchers, helped make that transformation possible.
Essentially growing up in the Atlanta spotlight, Jones has had his occasional stumbles, but overall he has conducted himself with dignity and class, doing great credit to himself and the Braves. He’s also played some clutch, Hall of Fame-caliber baseball along the way.
So to mark the occasion and as a well-deserved tribute, here’s Chipper’s walkup song, “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne, a veteran himself who is even more grizzled than Chipper.

Well, I’m not much of a fan of Ozzy Osborne, tho his wife is a fine looking woman. But I’m a big fan of the Braves and Chipper. One of these days the Braves are going to go all the way and not disappoint the way they’ve done so many years. And there’s another fine-looking woman, one that I can’t get shed of. She’s on my radio. She’s on my tape player. Like Chipper and the Braves, she don’t give up. When a fancy-smancy record exec told her they might think about recording her way back when if she went and got a hot band, she went right to work. She got one of the best guitar players in the world, a guy named Albert Lee that had played for the Everly Brothers and other big stars. She got a up and coming singer-songwriter named Rodney Crowell. She got a fine pedal steel-guitar player and a great drummer and a world class bass player. And there was only one name you could give a band like that, the Hot Band. The rest is history. So, like I say, one of these days the Braves are going all the way. And here’s Emmylou singing One of These Days on the original recording:

I loved the way Chipper tortured the Mets. On the field and off.
“Now all the Mets fans can go home and put their Yankee stuff on.”
Still the greatest insult in all of baseball history.

I got to my first one in ‘88, and the joke was you’d call up the stadium asking what time the game was and they’d ask “What time can you get here?” You and 3000 of your closest friends (ok, that was the “announced attendance”) at the old ballpark. The best part was you could buy the cheapest ticket and still walk down after the first inning to sit anywhere you wanted. Still remember moving to the right field foul pole about 20 rows up in Justice’s first season, because nearly every ball he hit somehow ended up there.
I’m sure someone will post Fogarty’s “Centerfield” before long. Go Braves!

bet, the killer thing about that Santana song is that it is so damn good! And for me, it just never gets old.
Don’t want to get too political here, but seeing him last summer at the Civil Rights Game was an enormous thrill. That my only son was with me and that Devadip put such a smack down on a certain segment of our society was just icing on the cake, brother and sisters!

Here’s one that pretty much sums up all of us now. “All day long I think of things but nothing seems to satisfy. Can you help me, satisfy my brain?”.
http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=paranoid+by+black+sabbath&mid=ED6B98243F362141A66BED6B98243F362141A66B&view=detail&FORM=VIRE2
This pretty much sums up the result of the little act played out daily bothg here and every where else by the media. Nowadays pretty much everyone is expected by the media and the press to be on edge and hanging on the next story which may or may not be to their own ideological liking. The result is pretty much everybody that gives a damn is miserable and they worry about things they have absolutely no control over. Why? Because there is money to be made by those puppet masters in the media/press pitting one side against the other. Jay is pretty good at it but he pales in comparison to the “big leaguer’s in the press who all have agendas of their own. They know that their “followers” are nothing more than puppets whose strings are begging to be pulled to their advantage. And the ultimate result? We turn on each other. Sad days we live in now. Instead of trying to unify, Jay and the rest try to seperate and after reading this blog for quite a while, Jay and the rest are very successful at it. There is no common ground with these people. It is “believe as we do or be thrown into the trash”. What liberals should remember is, all of the politicians in Washington and on every liberal media/press outlet in this nation are far better off financially than you are yourself will ever be. They are speaking on a hill down to you and expecting you to follow them. They are making money off of you.

In 1979 I had the chance to transfer to Atlanta with the company I worked for.
I came down here to check the people here out and vice versa. They loved me and I loved it here.
One night we were all in a hotel bar and the Braves were playing the St. Louis Cardinals. I believe the Bravos were up 12 – 1 in the fifth. They lost that game 13 – 12.
And I thought, oh my god, I’m moving here and this is gonna be my team???
Even so, my loyalties are fierce and I never gave up on them, and never will!
