An unprepared, unfocused Obama pays the price

obama-romney-debate-AP648260177986_620x350

Remember the classic nightmare in which you show up unprepared for a test in a class that you completely forgot you had?

That’s what Barack Obama looked like last night. From the opening question, he came off as unprepared, unsteady and almost uninterested in the task at hand. He found himself on defense throughout the debate, and when opportunities arose, he failed to recognize them.

As I noted last night during the live blog, Obama seemed overconfident coming in, as if he had underestimated both his opponent and the occasion. By the end of the evening, overconfidence should no longer have been a problem. As CNN noted, 67 percent of those polled who had watched the debate declared Mitt Romney the victor.

“No presidential candidate has topped 60 percent in that question since it was first asked in 1984,” CNN polling director Keating Holland pointed out.

And a good part of that was caused by Mitt Romney. He came in hungry, needing a win, and it showed in his focus and preparation. He got the better of almost every exchange, in part because at some point in his debate prep he decided to finally make the transition from “severely conservative” GOP primary candidate to general-election candidate.

The new Romney endorsed regulation of business. He dismissed tax cuts as an economic policy. He embraced his own Massachusetts health-care plan. He talked of compromise and working together. A surprised Obama wasn’t ready to handle this latest Romney incarnation and repeatedly failed to tie the moderate, genial GOP candidate on that stage in Denver to the GOP candidate on the campaign trail.

Will the outcome of this debate, the first of three between Obama and Romney, create a ripple in the polls? It almost certainly will. I doubt it will cost Obama his lead, but it should shrink it and introduce doubt in many minds that had not previously doubted. Romney had the night that he needed to keep his funders happy and his base engaged.

The next debate, covering foreign and domestic policy in a townhall forum, will be Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in New York. I suspect that they’ll be scrambling at the White House this morning to clear more time from the president’s calendar for prep work between now and then. He can’t afford a repeat of what happened last night in Denver.

Your post of a quick no with no reasoning behind it was my first clue Watson.

No proof yet was more of a question, I think circumstancial evidence is all we gone be able to get anyway.

I am of that generation and would easily beg to differ as would a majority of my college classmates, friends, colleagues of my age all seem to kinda go the way I described.

But that’s a very small sample, and there are those still that house those racist sentiments and ideas but not anywhere near the majority. as opposed to a majority of the older people in the same groups mention. Well except for college weren’t too many older students at my institution.

But to simply say no Is evidence of not knowing many younger people or not willing to think deeply about the subject.

As a flight attendant “back in the day,” I can say from experience that the altitude can have an effect, especially when one arrives from Seattle, as I did. Seattle is at sea level & Denver is a mile high. I slept for almost my whole 30 hour layover, & I was only 20 years old. Not saying this was our president’s problem. Just saying it CAN have an effect. Guess I’m also saying, “please lay off Mr. Gore. He is not totally wrong on this.”

It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America ’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, “the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. I think ‘Cherokee’ has spent to much time listening to MSNBC.

Open your eyes to what is going on outside of your utopian liberal world.

Doom — “Not quite true Joe mama.”

Let’s see your evidence then. Link.

“I remember a couple of years ago when Obama was touting all kinds of new jobs being created as green jobs- jobs such as a busdriver on a hybrid bus. Seems like liberals wanted to play fast and loose with the definition of green jobs when it comes to inflating Obama’s jobs numbers but then you want to cry foul when Mitt uses the same criteria. Can’t have it both ways sir.”

Neither can you. Link your evidence. I don’t credit your memory and you saying “I remember.” Earlier this year, you tried to cite $5/gallon gas prices as evidence — yet the national average has never *gotten* to $5 a gallon.

“Yet again your argument must be dismissed.”

Rejected. (laughing) :D

You’re too clueless to even stay focused ON my argument, Doom, and you’re obviously having trouble distinguishing between what I’m saying (Romney’s claim of $90 million appears to have some holes in it and bears further examination) and what the linked article says Learn to tell the difference between the two, son. :D

“And if you’re going to come at me with your nonsense try making it from a neutral source instead of the liberal Washington post. From the guy who complains about heritage. jeez.”

Poor, incompetent Doomy. Poor Doomy forgets that Joe debunked Heritage by *proving* that they were cherrypicking numbers, which you yourself admitted. :D

When Doomy is capable of refuting the Post’s argument, then Doomy will do so. Until then, Doomy will face arguments from the WashPost source whether Doomy likes them or not. (laughing) :D

“I really wish you wouldn’t make it so easy to blow your shyte right outta the water.”

I really wish you’d learn to focus on what my argument actually *is.* This is the third time this week I’ve had to correct you. If this goes on much longer, I’m afraid I’m going to have to have a conference with your parents about your disappointing performance :D

“Dismissed.”

Denied. Doomfailure noted.

“ . . . thousands of other bogus “green jobs” were “created or saved” by President Zero’s “green initiative.” Spending billions of taxpayer stimulus dollars with little to show for it . . .”

Irrelevant, given that the issue we were discussing was *Romney’s* claim about expenditures on green items — not the President’s or anyone else’s. Once again, Doom, keep your eyes on the road. (giggling) :D
