An unprepared, unfocused Obama pays the price

obama-romney-debate-AP648260177986_620x350

Remember the classic nightmare in which you show up unprepared for a test in a class that you completely forgot you had?

That’s what Barack Obama looked like last night. From the opening question, he came off as unprepared, unsteady and almost uninterested in the task at hand. He found himself on defense throughout the debate, and when opportunities arose, he failed to recognize them.

As I noted last night during the live blog, Obama seemed overconfident coming in, as if he had underestimated both his opponent and the occasion. By the end of the evening, overconfidence should no longer have been a problem. As CNN noted, 67 percent of those polled who had watched the debate declared Mitt Romney the victor.

“No presidential candidate has topped 60 percent in that question since it was first asked in 1984,” CNN polling director Keating Holland pointed out.

And a good part of that was caused by Mitt Romney. He came in hungry, needing a win, and it showed in his focus and preparation. He got the better of almost every exchange, in part because at some point in his debate prep he decided to finally make the transition from “severely conservative” GOP primary candidate to general-election candidate.

The new Romney endorsed regulation of business. He dismissed tax cuts as an economic policy. He embraced his own Massachusetts health-care plan. He talked of compromise and working together. A surprised Obama wasn’t ready to handle this latest Romney incarnation and repeatedly failed to tie the moderate, genial GOP candidate on that stage in Denver to the GOP candidate on the campaign trail.

Will the outcome of this debate, the first of three between Obama and Romney, create a ripple in the polls? It almost certainly will. I doubt it will cost Obama his lead, but it should shrink it and introduce doubt in many minds that had not previously doubted. Romney had the night that he needed to keep his funders happy and his base engaged.

The next debate, covering foreign and domestic policy in a townhall forum, will be Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in New York. I suspect that they’ll be scrambling at the White House this morning to clear more time from the president’s calendar for prep work between now and then. He can’t afford a repeat of what happened last night in Denver.

If he had been prepared and focused, it would have been the same result. That is about the best he can do. This is what you get when the state-controlled media abdicates its responsibility to vet candidates.

Marty Huggins’

“Which politician has ever claimed to want All regulations ended?”

Part of Gov Romney’s stump speech was that he would repeal all regulations enacted during the Obama Administration. Then he modified it and said he would review them all and repeal some. But the Right heard what they wanted to hear.

The general tenor of conservatives on this blog is regulations are unnecessary, the free market will provide all controls necessary. I know, you may think I’m making that last one up, but believe me, if you’ve been around this blog for a while, you will recognize it as correct. Even when clean air, water, drug safety is brought up, those items are disregarded and the mantras continue.

“He also didn’t say job creators would be fine I believe it was along the lines of the super rich will do fine. But if he said job creators are doing fine could you post that?”

I was using language the conservatives on this blog would recognize. They’ve used “Job Creators” and ’super wealthy” or ‘the top 1%” or “the top 2%” synonymously. Their justification for giving tax cuts to the (pick your noun) wealthy is because they create the jobs. They keep more of their money, they hire people, and that’s how Republicans will get the economy back on track.

“I thought I had read on here for months that posters wished the right would move more to the center and it appears that has happened. Why not be happy about it instead of trying to place guilt on them? Unless you don’t want the right to move more to the center.”

Actually, many conservative bloggers here regularly dismissed Romney as not a real Republican, a RINO. During the primaries Gingrich labeled him with the ultimate epithet. Romney is, he said, a ‘moderate.’ This was done to question his credentials and character and cause him to lose the nomination.

As far as placing guilt on them, I don’t think that’s possible for many. What I have tried to do is get them to speak to their past comments in light of the candidate’s new reincarnation. The only thing I’ve heard is “words don’t really matter because he’s a politician.” That is a pretty low standard, giving excuse to pandering, lack of commitment and honor.

But past that, it was an effort to discern if many here on the Right have any philosophical core at all. I have not had that addressed. So far I am led to conclude all they have is antipathy towards the President and they will excuse, ignore or disregard anything said by their candidate as long as he beats Obama.

Keep your eye on KRG President Masoud Barzani and the Syrian Kurds. There are oil contracts pending between Turkey and the KRG. Where there’s money, there’s incentive.

Also, there’s no love lost between the Iranian Kurds and Ahmadinejad’s theocratic rule.

Both Syria and Turkey have come too far to return to a theocracy.

And I’m not buying the Obama’s distracted with Syria excuse. If he was planning on doing ANYTHING he’d have done it long ago. The left won’t tolerate another engagement.

Perhaps with Tea Partiers on the inside and Tea Partiers on the outside, our hope is to bring about change within our nominee and the party.

A dramatic new study with implications for next month’s presidential election finds that offering women free birth control can reduce unplanned pregnancies — and send the abortion rate spiraling downward.

When more than 9,000 women ages 14 to 45 in the St. Louis area were given no-cost contraception for three years, abortion rates dropped from two-thirds to three-quarters lower than the national rate, according to a new report by Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis researchers.

Obama lost last nights debate because Obama lost last nights debate. It had nothing to do with Jim Lehrer. Will this loss in and of its self be a game changer? I doubt it but it could be a momentum changer. If Romney steam rolls Obama again like he did last night in Denver it very well could be the death knell for Obama’s second term bid. liberalism….mick……whatever, whenever, for however you need it……….mick and gore’s comment…..this illuminates obama’s failures as a leader by always blaming anything or everything except yourself….it’s amazing libs are blinded so much by the ideology that they can’t see it…..
