An unprepared, unfocused Obama pays the price
Remember the classic nightmare in which you show up unprepared for a test in a class that you completely forgot you had?
That’s what Barack Obama looked like last night. From the opening question, he came off as unprepared, unsteady and almost uninterested in the task at hand. He found himself on defense throughout the debate, and when opportunities arose, he failed to recognize them.
As I noted last night during the live blog, Obama seemed overconfident coming in, as if he had underestimated both his opponent and the occasion. By the end of the evening, overconfidence should no longer have been a problem. As CNN noted, 67 percent of those polled who had watched the debate declared Mitt Romney the victor.
“No presidential candidate has topped 60 percent in that question since it was first asked in 1984,” CNN polling director Keating Holland pointed out.
And a good part of that was caused by Mitt Romney. He came in hungry, needing a win, and it showed in his focus and preparation. He got the better of almost every exchange, in part because at some point in his debate prep he decided to finally make the transition from “severely conservative” GOP primary candidate to general-election candidate.
The new Romney endorsed regulation of business. He dismissed tax cuts as an economic policy. He embraced his own Massachusetts health-care plan. He talked of compromise and working together. A surprised Obama wasn’t ready to handle this latest Romney incarnation and repeatedly failed to tie the moderate, genial GOP candidate on that stage in Denver to the GOP candidate on the campaign trail.
Will the outcome of this debate, the first of three between Obama and Romney, create a ripple in the polls? It almost certainly will. I doubt it will cost Obama his lead, but it should shrink it and introduce doubt in many minds that had not previously doubted. Romney had the night that he needed to keep his funders happy and his base engaged.
The next debate, covering foreign and domestic policy in a townhall forum, will be Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in New York. I suspect that they’ll be scrambling at the White House this morning to clear more time from the president’s calendar for prep work between now and then. He can’t afford a repeat of what happened last night in Denver.

Jay, I have to disagree with you on this one. Obama was weak, and lackluster without a doubt and should have stood up to Romney’s bullying, lies, and time hogging. Obama had lots of weapons…and used none!. But Lehrer was weak and ineffective and he let Romney ride all over him. He might just as well not have been there.

Either have really played anyone. I figured GA’s D was not good as billed during the Buffalo game.
We will see how they play now that all starters will be in their 2nd game together. GA has some great play makers on D. Several will play on Sunday, but not sure how well they play as a unit. Sometimes you have win by 3 and outs, not just hope for turnovers. TOs are great but they have to come in conjunction with the 3 and outs.

Things have been good. I got a little carried away today but I still plan on being nice to everyone else. Keep and kam had their chance and I did try and make a serious effort at civility to those 2 but they chose to end that. And that’s cool with me. Was speaking with my doc today, he said his wife was watching the debates and thought Obama looked frustrated.
I’d say that’s likely spot-on. Here Romney’s gone thru the nomination and primary campaigning, they have a debate scheduled, Obama spends all his time preparing for what’s on the record and Romney walks in and says “All that? That wasn’t me, really! All that stuff you thought, why, I really think just the opposite! Regulations are good! No tax cuts for the Job Creators! Dept of Education and education? I’m not about to cut education, period!”
So yeah, I’d expect Obama’s facial expressions to be pretty much bordering on contempt.

Obama’s stump speech today is the equivalent of:
Two kids are on the playground playing dozens (cracking jokes on each other).
Kid 1 (Romney) is wearing out Kid 2 (Obama). Kid 2 can’t keep up and it shows.

If you think Mitt going more moderate during a general election debate was a shock you are the only one who never saw it coming.
Most pundits pointed out that he was being unusually conservative for the republican phase of this entire process. Most pundits knew he was not truly conservative. Remember the abortion issues when democrats ran around saying he was for it before he was against it.
Romney won because he was expected to go more centrist and that is what he is. In truth he is a moderate republican. The party crucified McCann for being moderate so it was a calculation that Romney had to make.
If you are shocked he was more moderate, which I don’t believe you really were, then you should expect him to win the next 2 debates by the same logic.
The Romney we saw last night is the real one, that’s why he was comfortable, factual and aggressive.

1) Mr. & Mrs. Middle America watched. All they knew about the Mittster was what they heard from the MSM and O’bozo campaign ads. They discovered they’d been lied to. The Mittster was presidential. O’bozo wasn’t and got schooled.
2) O’bozo airheads watched. They thought he was omnipotent, the one, the smartest man on earth. They saw reality. They may not change their votes to the Mittster, but they have become very much disillusioned. Those $3 donations dry up; they decide not to vote.
What’s next?

Obama will LOSE all the debates because he simply can’t communicate without a teleprompter, and has nothing to offer for his 4 years in office… It’s really very simple, Obama’s policies are a failure at every turn…. The only way he gets re elected is by the uneducated masses, the true american idol culture that got him elected in the first place.. Time will tell, but that american idol culture is fickle and has short term memory at best.. Good Job Mr. Romney!

I’ve seen that posted a few times today about regulations.
Which politician has ever claimed to want All regulations ended?
Any of the candidates say that on record that all regulations should end?
I took it as the example he gave that we don’t need banks opening up in people’s car garage.
He also didn’t say job creators would be fine I believe it was along the lines of the super rich will do fine. But if he said job creators are doing fine could you post that?
I thought I had read on here for months that posters wished the right would move more to the center and it appears that has happened.
Why not be happy about it instead of trying to place guilt on them?
Unless you don’t want the right to move more to the center.
Romney was who he was as a gov.
Always more important to look at politicians record than their words.
